Insecurities and New Beginnings

Beth Coldridge stood naked in front of the full length mirror in the master bedroom, the late morning light slicing across her body without mercy. The twins were finally down for their nap, giving her these few stolen minutes of silence that she immediately regretted using this way. Her hands moved slowly over the changes that still shocked her, even eight months after delivery. The soft swell of her belly refused to flatten no matter how many tentative crunches she attempted on the living room rug. Silver stretch marks branched across her hips and lower abdomen like delicate fractures in porcelain. Her breasts, once high and firm, now hung heavier, the nipples darker from nursing two hungry babies at once.

She turned sideways and sucked in her stomach, then let it go with a defeated exhale. Nothing helped. At thirty six she felt like a stranger had taken over her reflection. The woman who used to catch Nate staring at her ass in yoga pants had been replaced by this softer, rounder version who avoided her own gaze. Sex had become a memory she barely touched. The last time Nate had reached for her in the dark, she had frozen, making an excuse about being too tired. The truth was simpler and more painful. She did not want him to feel the new texture of her, the places that jiggled when she moved, the way her confidence had drained out with the last contractions.

Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes. She wiped them away quickly, angry at herself for the weakness. Nate deserved a wife who felt sexy again, who could look in the mirror without cataloging every flaw. Instead he had a woman who hid under oversized sweatshirts and avoided the scale like it might bite her. The worst part was how much she still loved him. His quiet devotion only made her feel more inadequate. He never complained, never pushed, but she could see the questions in his kind eyes when she rolled away from his touch.

Downstairs, Nate sat at the kitchen island with his laptop open, but the spreadsheet on screen had gone untouched for ten minutes. He kept glancing toward the stairs, knowing Beth was up there alone with her thoughts again. He had watched her disappear into herself for months, and the knowledge that his own secret desires might actually help her had finally pushed him over the edge.

Three weeks ago he had found John Kerner's website while deep in a late night spiral of videos and forums he would never admit to visiting. The trainer's profile showed a twenty eight year old with the kind of carved physique that belonged on magazine covers. Broad shoulders, veiny forearms, abs that looked airbrushed even in candid shots. More importantly, John had a reputation for transforming postpartum clients with patience and results. Nate had read every testimonial twice. What the other husbands did not mention, what Nate could not stop imagining, was how those strong hands would look on Beth's body during stretches. How her cheeks might flush the first time John corrected her form with a firm touch to the lower back or hip.

The fantasy had lived in Nate for years, carefully locked away. Watching his wife blossom under another man's attention, seeing her rediscover her power and pleasure while he stayed on the sidelines, supporting, aching, aroused beyond reason. It should have made him feel guilty. Instead it made him hard right there at the kitchen table. He had booked the first session before he could talk himself out of it. Now the time had come to tell her.

He heard her footsteps on the stairs and closed the laptop. Beth appeared in the kitchen wearing loose black sweatpants and an oversized university hoodie that hid every curve. Her dark hair was pulled into a messy bun, and her eyes looked red. Nate's heart squeezed with love and something sharper.

"Hey you," he said softly, standing to pull her into a hug. She let him, but her body stayed tense against his. "Twins go down okay?"

"Finally. They fought it today." She pulled back and moved to the coffee maker, avoiding his eyes. "I look like I got dragged through a tornado. Don't even pretend I don't."

Nate watched her pour a fresh cup. This was the moment. He had rehearsed it a dozen times in his head but the words still felt dangerous. "I have a surprise for you. I wanted to wait until everything was confirmed, but he's coming this afternoon."

Beth turned, one eyebrow raised. "He? Are we getting a new lawn guy or something?"

"Not exactly." Nate rubbed the back of his neck, a nervous habit she knew too well. "I hired a personal trainer for you. His name is John Kerner. He specializes in postpartum recovery and strength building. He comes highly recommended and he's willing to do home sessions in our basement gym three times a week."

The silence stretched between them. Beth set her coffee down so hard the liquid sloshed over the rim. "You did what?"

"I should have talked to you first. I know that. But you've been so hard on yourself lately, and I hate seeing it. This guy is the best. He can help you feel strong again, help you get your energy back. For you. Not for me. For you."

Beth stared at him like he had suggested she run for president. "Nate, I am nowhere near ready for some stranger to come in here and look at this." She gestured at her hidden body with both hands. "I still can't do a single push up. My core is mush. The idea of some ripped trainer judging every jiggle is my actual nightmare."

"He's a professional. He works with women in exactly your situation every day." Nate stepped closer, taking her hands. Her fingers were cold. "And I think it might be good for you to have someone who only sees potential. Not the woman who's been beating herself up for months. Just say you'll meet him. One session. If you hate it, I'll cancel everything and we never speak of it again."

She looked down at their joined hands. He could see the war happening behind her eyes, the part of her that desperately wanted to feel desirable again fighting the part that wanted to hide forever. Finally she let out a shaky breath.

"One session. And if I want to stop, we stop. No guilt trips."

"No guilt trips," he agreed, relief and excitement flooding his veins in equal measure. "Thank you. I really think this could be the start of something good."

Beth pulled her hands back and picked up her coffee again, mostly to have something to do. The idea of a young, fit trainer seeing her in workout clothes made her stomach twist. But beneath the panic was the smallest flicker of curiosity. Nate had never pushed her on anything before. The fact that he had gone behind her back and actually hired someone suggested how worried he truly was.

"What time is he coming?" she asked.

"Three o'clock. That gives us a couple hours. Maybe we could pick out some new clothes for you to wear? Nothing crazy. Just stuff that actually fits instead of hiding inside my old college hoodies."

Beth glanced down at herself and felt a fresh wave of embarrassment. She knew she looked like she had given up. The suggestion stung, but she could not deny the truth in it.

"I don't have anything that fits right anymore," she admitted quietly.

Nate's voice grew gentler. "Then let's order some things that do. Leggings. Sports bras. The kind real athletes wear. Something that makes you feel serious about this instead of like you're hiding. You have an incredible body, Beth. It grew two perfect humans. It deserves to be seen."

She snorted, but the words landed somewhere soft inside her chest. "Flattery isn't going to make my stretch marks disappear."

"No. But maybe feeling strong again will make them matter less." He pulled his phone out and opened a shopping site he had already bookmarked. "Here. I may have looked at a few things already."

They spent the next hour at the kitchen table while the twins slept. Nate encouraged her to choose fitted leggings in deep charcoal and a supportive sports bra in emerald green that would show more of her cleavage than she had allowed in months. She argued at first, insisting on looser tops, but he kept gently pushing.

"Try the tighter ones for me. Just once. If you feel ridiculous, we'll send them back. But I think you'll be surprised how much better you move when you're not fighting fabric all the time."

In the end she relented. The clothes arrived via same day delivery, and when she tried them on upstairs, the sensation was shocking. The leggings hugged every curve, outlining the shape of her ass and thighs in a way that felt almost obscene after so many months of hiding. The sports bra lifted and separated her breasts, creating cleavage she had forgotten she could have. She turned in the mirror and felt a confusing mix of shame and something electric. She did not look like her old self. She looked like a woman who had been through war and was still standing.

When she came back down, Nate's eyes widened. He swallowed hard before speaking.

"Jesus, Beth. You look incredible."

"I look like I'm trying too hard," she muttered, but she did not retreat upstairs to change. The appreciation in his gaze felt like warm water on frozen skin. She had not seen that particular heat in his eyes in a long time.

At ten minutes to three the doorbell rang. Beth's stomach flipped violently. She looked at Nate with wide eyes.

"I can't do this. Tell him I died."

"Too late for that." He kissed her forehead, then headed for the door. "You've got this. And I'll be right here the whole time."

Beth hung back in the kitchen as Nate opened the front door. She heard deep male voices exchanging pleasantries, then footsteps. When they entered the kitchen together, the air seemed to change density.

John Kerner was even more imposing in person than his pictures suggested. Six foot two at least, with shoulders that strained against a tight black compression shirt. His dark hair was cropped short on the sides and slightly longer on top, and his jaw looked sharp enough to cut glass. Veins stood out along his forearms as he carried a sleek black training bag. But it was his eyes that pinned her in place, piercing blue and far too observant. He smiled, and the expression transformed his face from intimidating to almost boyish.

"You must be Beth. I'm John. Really nice to meet you." He extended a large hand.

She took it, conscious of how small hers felt in his grip. His palm was warm and dry, calluses evident against her skin. "Hi. I'm sorry in advance for how out of shape I am."

His laugh was low and easy. "First rule of training with me. No apologizing for where you are today. We're only focused on where you're going. From what your husband told me, you've been through a lot carrying twins. That's serious strength already."

The words should have felt like empty trainer speak. Instead they landed with surprising weight. Beth felt some of the tension leave her shoulders.

Nate watched the exchange with careful attention, noting how John's eyes had flicked down once, quickly, taking in the way the new leggings clung to Beth's thighs and ass. The trainer was professional enough to keep his gaze mostly on her face, but that single glance was enough to send a dark thrill through Nate's bloodstream.

"Should we head down to the gym space?" Nate suggested. "I cleared out the area like you asked."

They moved to the finished basement where Nate had set up basic equipment months ago, mostly unused. John took his time looking around, then turned to Beth with that same easy confidence.

"Let's start with some basics so I can see where you're at. Mind if I watch you do a few bodyweight movements? Squats, some planks, whatever feels comfortable. I need to check mobility and any imbalances from carrying the twins."

Beth nodded, suddenly hyper aware of every inch of fabric stretched across her body. The leggings felt like a second skin. When she moved into position, she could feel John's eyes on her with professional focus. He corrected her stance gently, tapping the outside of her thigh to widen her feet.

"There. Keep your weight in your heels. Perfect. You feel that?"

His fingers lingered a fraction longer than strictly necessary. Beth told herself it was nothing. But when she glanced up, Nate was watching from the doorway with an expression she could not quite read. Something hungry lived in his eyes.

They moved through a basic assessment. John was encouraging without being condescending, pointing out the places where she already had surprising strength, particularly in her legs. By the end of thirty minutes Beth was sweating lightly and breathing harder, but she also felt strangely awake. John stood close as he demonstrated a stretch, his broad chest filling her peripheral vision.

"For next time, wear whatever makes you feel powerful," he said casually as they wrapped up. His eyes met hers directly. "Some women prefer tighter gear because it helps them feel their muscles working. No shame in that. Whatever gets you in the right headspace."

Beth felt heat rise in her cheeks. She was already wearing the tightest clothes she had owned in nearly a year. The subtle approval in his tone made her stomach flutter in a way she had not expected.

"I'll keep that in mind," she managed.

Nate walked John out while Beth stayed downstairs, looking at herself in the large mirror Nate had mounted on the gym wall. Her face was flushed. The sports bra had done its job well, pushing her breasts up and together. For the first time in months she did not immediately look away. She looked like someone who might actually be capable of change.

When Nate returned, he found her still standing there. He came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder. In the mirror their eyes met.

"Thank you for doing that," he murmured. "You looked amazing. Seriously."

Beth leaned back against him, feeling the solid warmth of his body. "He's intense. In a good way, I think. But I'm still not sure about all of this."

"You don't have to be sure yet." Nate's hands smoothed over the fitted fabric at her hips, a touch more possessive than usual. "Just keep showing up. For yourself."

Neither of them said what they were both thinking. Something had shifted in the house today. The sight of another man studying Beth's body, even professionally, had woken up parts of Nate he usually kept buried. And Beth, despite all her protests, had felt the spark of being truly seen by someone who did not carry the baggage of her old insecurities.

She turned in his arms and kissed him, slower and deeper than she had in months. When they broke apart, her voice was barely above a whisper.

"These clothes are ridiculous. I feel like I'm wearing paint."

"You look like a woman who's ready to start over," Nate answered, his hands still exploring the new terrain of her covered curves. "And I cannot wait to watch what happens next."

Upstairs one of the twins began to cry, breaking the moment. But as Beth went to answer the call, she caught her reflection once more in the gym mirror. The woman looking back at her seemed different. Not fixed. Not yet. But maybe, just maybe, no longer broken.

Nate stayed downstairs a few minutes longer, breathing in the faint trace of John's cologne that still lingered in the air. His cock pressed hard against his pants as he replayed the trainer's hand on his wife's thigh. This was only the beginning. He had set something in motion that could either save them or change them forever.

He was counting on both.
