Sunlit Introductions
Brandi Earlywine lay stretched across the padded lounge chair in her backyard, the late afternoon sun warming her skin like a lover who actually knew what he was doing. She wore her favorite red bikini, the one that barely contained her full breasts and hugged the soft curve of her hips. At thirty two she still looked good. Damn good. Long auburn hair spilled across the cushion beneath her head. Her naturally bubbly face remained hidden behind oversized sunglasses while her mind drifted.
Seven years of marriage to Keith had settled into something comfortable. Too comfortable. The kind of comfortable that left her staring at the ceiling most nights wondering if this was really it. Their sex life had slowed to a predictable rhythm that left her unsatisfied. Keith would climb on top, last maybe four minutes if she was lucky, then roll over and fall asleep. No teasing. No commands. No feeling of being taken. Just polite, quiet thrusting that ended with a grunt and a pat on her shoulder like she had done a good job.
She shifted on the chair, pressing her thighs together. The thought made her restless. She had tried talking to him about it once. Suggested they try something new. Maybe he could be a little rougher. Hold her down. Tell her what to do. Keith had turned red and mumbled something about how that kind of thing only happened in porn. Then he had changed the subject to their retirement savings.
Brandi sighed and reached for the glass of iced tea beside her. Condensation dripped down the side and landed on her stomach, making her shiver. The backyard felt too quiet today. Their neighborhood in this quiet suburban cul de sac rarely saw excitement. Same houses. Same routines. Same boring husbands who treated their wives like business partners instead of women with needs.
She closed her eyes and tried to push the thoughts away. This was her life. She had chosen it. Keith was stable. Kind. He never raised his voice. Never forgot her birthday. But god, sometimes she wished he would forget everything else and just fuck her like he meant it.
A deep voice cut through her thoughts.
"Looks like I picked the right day to introduce myself."
Brandi sat up quickly, nearly spilling her tea. The voice came from the other side of the wooden privacy fence that separated their yard from the neighboring house. The property had sat empty for months after the previous owners moved south. She shaded her eyes and looked toward the fence.
A man stood there, easily visible over the six foot barrier. He was tall. At least six four. His dark skin gleamed under the sun. Broad shoulders tapered down to a narrow waist, every inch of his torso carved with muscle that spoke of serious athletic history. He wore a simple white tank top that clung to his powerful chest and arms like it had been painted on. A confident smile spread across his face, showing perfect white teeth.
"Sorry if I startled you," he said, voice smooth and rich like warm honey. "Name's Jamal Rivan. Just moved in this morning. Saw you out here catching some rays and figured I'd be neighborly."
Brandi felt her pulse quicken. She stood up from the lounge chair and walked toward the fence, suddenly aware of how little fabric covered her body. The way his eyes tracked her movement sent an unfamiliar flutter through her stomach. Not fear. Something warmer.
"Brandi Earlywine," she replied, extending her hand over the fence. "Welcome to the neighborhood. I didn't realize someone had bought the place."
His hand engulfed hers completely. Strong. Dry. The brief contact sent a spark racing up her arm. He held it a second longer than necessary, his dark eyes locking onto hers with easy confidence. Up close she could see the definition in his biceps, the way his shoulders stretched the tank top. A light sheen of sweat made his skin glow.
"Figured a house this size needed a man's touch," Jamal said, his smile turning slightly playful. "Been doing some contractor work lately. Fixing up the place. If you or your husband ever need help with anything, I'm right here. Fences, decks, leaky pipes. You name it."
The way he said "anything" made her cheeks flush. She told herself it was the sun. Nothing more.
"That's really kind of you," Brandi answered, trying to keep her voice light and polite. "My husband Keith works a lot. Office job. He's not exactly handy around the house. We have a dripping faucet in the guest bathroom that's been driving me crazy for months."
Jamal leaned against the fence, muscles flexing naturally with the movement. "Dripping faucets are my specialty. I could come take a look tomorrow if you're free. While your husband's at work, of course. Wouldn't want to interrupt his important office business."
There it was again. That teasing edge in his voice. Like he already knew Keith was the kind of man who avoided getting his hands dirty. Brandi found herself smiling before she could stop it. She adjusted her bikini top self consciously, aware of how his gaze dipped briefly to her cleavage then returned to her face without shame.
"I'd like that," she said. "The faucet, I mean. It would be nice to have someone who knows what he's doing."
The double meaning hung between them. Jamal's grin widened, showing he caught it too. He didn't call her on it. Just let it sit there, warming the air like the sun on her skin.
"You look like you know how to enjoy your afternoons," he continued, nodding toward her lounge chair. "Most women around here seem glued to their phones or their kids. Nice to see someone who still appreciates the simple pleasures. That bikini looks incredible on you, by the way. The red brings out the fire in your hair."
Brandi felt heat bloom across her chest and neck. No one had complimented her body so directly in years. Keith's compliments were always safe. "You look nice, honey." Jamal's words landed differently. They felt intentional. Possessive somehow.
"Thank you," she managed, tucking a strand of auburn hair behind her ear. "I don't usually sunbathe like this but the yard is private. Or at least it was until five minutes ago."
Jamal chuckled, a low rumbling sound that seemed to vibrate through the fence boards. "Private enough. Though if I had a neighbor who looked like you, I'd be tempted to build the fence shorter. Give myself a better view."
She laughed despite herself. The sound surprised her. It sounded lighter than it had in months. "Are you always this forward with women you've just met?"
"Only the ones worth being forward with." His eyes held hers. "And something tells me you're worth it, Brandi."
The way he said her name made her thighs press together again. She could feel her nipples tightening against the thin bikini fabric. This was ridiculous. She had known this man for all of three minutes. Yet her body responded to him like a flower turning toward sunlight after a long winter.
She glanced down at his hands resting on top of the fence. Large hands. Strong fingers. The kind of hands that could grip hard enough to leave marks. The thought sent another rush of warmth between her legs. She quickly looked back up, hoping he hadn't noticed where her attention had gone.
He had. The knowing glint in his dark eyes told her everything.
"So tell me about yourself, Brandi. What does a beautiful woman like you do with her days while her husband is off at the office?"
She leaned against the fence too, closer now. Close enough to catch the faint scent of his cologne mixed with clean sweat. "Not much exciting. I work part time at a design firm. Mostly from home. Keep the house running. Cook. Clean. The usual suburban wife stuff."
"And does the usual suburban wife stuff make you happy?" Jamal asked. The question cut deeper than it should have. His tone remained light but his eyes were serious, studying her reaction.
Brandi hesitated. "It did. For a while. Keith is a good man. Stable. We have a nice life."
"But?" he prompted, reading between her words effortlessly.
She smiled faintly. "But sometimes a woman wants more than stable. Sometimes she wants to feel... wanted. Really wanted. Not just convenient."
The confession slipped out before she could stop it. Jamal's expression didn't change to shock or judgment. Instead his smile grew more confident, like she had just handed him the keys to something precious.
"A woman who looks like you deserves to feel wanted every single day," he said quietly. "Deserves to be appreciated properly. Touched properly. I bet your husband doesn't tell you often enough how fucking sexy you are when the sun hits your skin like this."
Brandi's breath caught. The crude word sounded so natural coming from him. Not vulgar. Just honest. Her pulse hammered in her throat. She knew she should step back. Change the subject. But her feet remained planted, her body leaning slightly toward him across the fence.
"You shouldn't say things like that," she whispered, though her voice lacked conviction.
"Why not? It's true." Jamal's gaze dropped slowly down her body then back up. "Those curves. That hair. The way you're looking at me right now. Like you're wondering what these hands would feel like on you. Don't worry. I won't tell if you won't."
Before she could respond, the sound of a car pulling into the driveway reached them. Keith's silver sedan. Right on time. Five thirty exactly. The garage door began to rumble open.
Jamal didn't pull away. "Sounds like the stable husband returns. I'll let you go entertain him. But Brandi?"
She met his eyes again.
"I'll be seeing you tomorrow about that faucet. And maybe we can continue this conversation. I have a feeling we have a lot to talk about."
He gave her one last lingering look, his eyes tracing the swell of her breasts, before stepping back from the fence with that same easy confidence. Brandi watched him walk away, unable to stop herself from noticing how his shorts hugged his powerful thighs and the tight curve of his ass.
She hurried back to her lounge chair and grabbed her cover up, slipping it on just as Keith stepped through the sliding glass doors into the backyard. He looked exactly as he always did. Slightly rumpled button down shirt. Khakis that didn't quite hide the softening around his middle. Pleasant, unremarkable face behind wire rimmed glasses.
"Hey honey," he called, waving. "Nice day for sunbathing. Did you get a chance to start dinner yet?"
Brandi forced a smile. "Not yet. I was just... meeting the new neighbor."
Keith glanced toward the fence with mild interest. "Oh yeah? What's he like?"
She thought of Jamal's broad shoulders. His deep voice. The way he had looked at her like she was something to be devoured rather than simply tolerated.
"He's... tall," she said carefully. "Black guy. Used to be an athlete. Does contractor work now. Offered to fix that dripping faucet in the guest bath."
Keith nodded absently, already scrolling through his phone. "That's nice. Save us some money. These repair guys charge an arm and a leg these days. Good looking guy?"
The question was so casual. So oblivious. Brandi felt a strange mix of guilt and excitement twist in her belly.
"I suppose," she answered, keeping her tone neutral. "Hard to tell with the fence between us."
Keith shrugged. "Well, as long as he can fix the faucet. I'm starving. Should we order pizza?"
Brandi watched her husband turn and walk back inside without waiting for her answer. No kiss. No real curiosity about her day. No acknowledgment that his wife had been standing in the yard in a tiny bikini talking to a muscular stranger who had just made her feel more desired in five minutes than Keith had in the past year.
She stood there in the fading sunlight, the warmth on her skin now matched by something hotter building inside her. An unfamiliar spark. Dangerous. Thrilling. Her nipples still ached against her bikini top. A subtle wetness had gathered between her thighs during that conversation with Jamal. She pressed her legs together again, savoring the sensation.
For the first time in years, Brandi Earlywine felt truly seen. And the man who had seen her lived right next door.
She picked up her iced tea with slightly trembling fingers and followed her husband inside. But her mind remained in the backyard, replaying every word Jamal had said. Every lingering glance. Every flex of those powerful muscles.
Tonight when Keith climbed on top of her for their usual three minutes of adequate sex, Brandi knew she would close her eyes and picture someone else. Someone who wouldn't ask if she was ready. Someone who would simply take what he wanted.
Someone who had already begun to claim a small piece of her with nothing more than a smile over the fence and a few perfectly chosen words.
The spark had been lit. And Brandi had no idea how quickly it would grow into an inferno that would consume her entire marriage.
