Rumors and Discovery

Veda Wise clipped the leash onto Marceline's collar and stepped out into the late afternoon sun. The golden retriever mix tugged eagerly at the end of the line, tail whipping back and forth as they turned down the familiar sidewalk. It was the same route they took every day after work, the one that looped past the quiet cul-de-sacs and eventually skirted the edge of the old abandoned lot two blocks over. Veda liked the rhythm of it. The walk gave her time to think, and Marceline never complained about the pace.

She was halfway down Maple when she caught the sound of voices drifting from Mrs. Wetherby's front porch. Two women stood there with iced tea glasses in hand, voices low but not low enough. Veda slowed Marceline without meaning to.

"I'm telling you, it's been there for weeks now," one of them said. "My husband saw a couple of guys from the construction crew hanging around that porta-potty after dark. Said they were acting strange, like they didn't want to be seen."

The other woman laughed, a short sharp sound. "Probably just some bored idiots playing a prank. What kind of setup could possibly be in a portable restroom?"

Veda kept walking, but the words stuck. Portable restroom. Abandoned lot. Strange. She told herself it was nothing, just neighborhood noise, the kind of gossip that always floated around when something sat unused too long. Still, her steps felt a little lighter as she and Marceline continued on.

By the time they reached the far side of the lot, the sun had dipped lower, casting long shadows across the cracked pavement and overgrown weeds. The portable restroom stood alone near the back fence, its blue plastic sides faded and streaked with dirt. Veda had passed it a hundred times and never given it a second glance. Today she paused.

Marceline sniffed at a patch of grass, giving Veda an excuse to linger. She glanced around. No one else was nearby. The rumors tugged at her again. What kind of setup? She told herself she was only curious in the way any responsible neighbor would be. If something odd was happening out here, she should know. For safety. For Ambrose, even though he was sixteen now and hardly needed her hovering.

She looped Marceline's leash around a low fence post and walked the rest of the way alone. The door to the portable restroom creaked when she pulled it open. The smell hit her first, that sharp chemical tang mixed with something earthier. She wrinkled her nose and stepped inside anyway, letting the door swing shut behind her.

The space was dim, lit only by a small vent near the ceiling. It looked ordinary at first glance. A toilet, a sink that probably didn't work, scuffed plastic walls. Then her eyes caught on the far side. A perfectly circular hole had been cut into the partition, about waist height, the edges smoothed but still raw. Below it, someone had taped a small handwritten sign: "Knock twice. No talking."

Veda stared. Her stomach turned. Revulsion rolled through her in a hot wave. Who would do this? Who would come out here and turn a filthy portable toilet into... whatever this was? She took a step back, hand already reaching for the door handle. This was disgusting. Dangerous, even. She needed to leave right now and forget she had ever seen it.

But her feet didn't move. Not right away. Her gaze kept drifting back to the hole. It was clean, she realized. Not like the rest of the place. Someone had wiped the edges. Maybe even polished the plastic around it. The thought made her throat tighten. She imagined men standing on the other side, waiting. Anonymous. Silent. Her cheeks flushed hot, and she hated the reaction instantly.

She was lonely. That was all. Six years since the divorce, and the closest thing to touch she got these days was Marceline leaning against her leg. Still, the idea of something like this existing so close to home felt obscene. She should report it. Call the city. Tell someone. Instead she stood there, pulse quickening, a strange curiosity threading through the disgust.

What would it feel like? The question rose unbidden. She pushed it down hard. No. This wasn't for her. She was a mother. A responsible woman. She had no business entertaining thoughts like that. Yet her eyes lingered on the hole one more second before she forced herself to turn away.

Outside, Marceline barked once, impatient. Veda untied the leash with hands that felt unsteady. She walked home faster than usual, the image of that smooth circle burned behind her eyelids. Every few steps she told herself it was revulsion. Nothing more. The curiosity was just shock, the mind's way of processing something ugly.

By the time she reached her front door, the sun had set. Ambrose's bike leaned against the garage. She could hear the television through the open window. Normal sounds. Safe sounds. She unclipped Marceline and stepped inside, trying to shake the feeling that something had shifted, even if only a little.

She made dinner on autopilot, answered Ambrose's questions about his day with half her attention, and went to bed early. Sleep didn't come easily. Every time she closed her eyes she saw the hole again. The sign. The quiet instruction. Her body reacted before her mind could stop it, a low, unwelcome thrum between her legs that she refused to acknowledge.

She told herself she would never go back. That was final. The rumors were true, and that was enough. Curiosity satisfied. End of story.

But deep down, in the quiet dark of her bedroom, she already knew that wasn't quite right.
