The Demonstration
The neighborhood party hummed with the usual summer energy, string lights draped across backyards and the smell of grilled burgers drifting through the air. Theo stood near the edge of the crowd, nursing a beer as he watched Claire laugh with a group of wives near the dessert table. Her auburn hair caught the light, and her green eyes sparkled with that warm, easy charm that always pulled people in. At thirty-four, she still turned heads without trying, her curvy frame wrapped in a simple sundress that hugged her hips just right.
Miguel, their neighbor from two doors down, moved through the party like he owned the space. Tall, broad-shouldered, and built with the kind of muscle that came from actual work rather than gym posing, he drew eyes wherever he went. His dark skin gleamed under the lights, close-cropped hair giving him a sharp, confident look. Theo had always liked the guy. Miguel was easy to talk to, patient, and quick with a joke that didn't feel forced.
"Hey, Theo," Miguel called out, waving him over to a folding table set up near the garage. "Got something I want to show you and Claire if you've got a minute. Something I've been tinkering with in the workshop."
Theo nodded and caught Claire's eye across the yard. She excused herself and joined them, cheeks flushed from the conversation and the evening warmth. "What's this about, Miguel?" she asked, her voice soft but curious.
Miguel grinned, that commanding presence tempered by genuine enthusiasm. "I've been working on a little prototype. Call it the pleasure ray for now. It's a neural device, subtle stuff. Heightens suggestibility and desire without anyone realizing it's happening. Nothing crazy, just amplifies what's already there. Thought you two might get a kick out of seeing it in action."
Claire exchanged a quick glance with Theo. They had talked about fantasies before, late at night when the lights were low and inhibitions slipped. Her secret pull toward Black men, specifically the kind of intense, dominant energy Miguel carried, had come up more than once in whispered confessions. Theo had listened, aroused and conflicted, never quite sure how to respond beyond holding her closer.
"Sounds interesting," Theo said, keeping his tone light. "But how does it work exactly?"
Miguel pulled a small, sleek device from his pocket, no bigger than a remote. "Low frequency pulses. Targets the brain's reward centers. Makes people more open to suggestions, heightens physical awareness. Consent's key, though. I only demo it with people who want to play along."
They stepped into the quieter corner of the garage, away from the main party noise. Miguel held the device up, explaining the basics while Claire leaned in, her curiosity piqued. Theo felt a strange flutter in his chest, a mix of nerves and something warmer he couldn't name yet.
After the quick rundown, Miguel looked at them both. "If you're intrigued, come by my place tomorrow evening for a private demo. No pressure. Just the three of us. I think it could be... enlightening."
Claire's breath caught, and she nodded before Theo could respond. "We'd like that," she said, her voice carrying a hint of hesitation that Theo knew masked deeper interest.
Back at home later that night, the couple sat on the edge of their bed, the party sounds fading into memory. Theo turned to her, his blue eyes searching. "You really want to try this? The device thing with Miguel?"
Claire bit her lip, fingers twisting in her lap. "I don't know. It sounds harmless enough, but... you know how I feel about certain things. Those fantasies I've told you about. The ones with... well, men like him."
Theo swallowed, feeling that familiar stir of jealousy laced with heat. "I remember. It turns you on, thinking about it. I get that."
She looked up, green eyes vulnerable. "It does. More than I admit most days. But I love you, Theo. This doesn't change that."
The next evening arrived faster than expected. They walked the short distance to Miguel's house, the air thick with anticipation. Miguel greeted them at the door, dressed casually in a fitted shirt that showed off his build. "Come on in. I've got the setup ready in the living room."
The device sat on the coffee table, innocuous at first glance. Miguel explained the controls again, his voice smooth and reassuring. "We'll start small. Just a low setting to see how it feels. Focus on something you'd like to explore, and let it do the rest."
Claire sat on the couch between them, her posture tense but eager. Theo watched as Miguel activated it with a soft hum. The air seemed to shift, a subtle warmth spreading through the room. Claire's shoulders relaxed almost immediately, her expression softening into something dreamy.
"Tell me what you're thinking about right now," Miguel said, his tone instructional, patient.
Claire's cheeks flushed deeper. "I... I've always wondered what it would be like with someone like you. Strong. Confident. The way you carry yourself." Her words came easier than usual, the mild influence loosening her usual shyness. "Those fantasies about big Black men. They've been in my head for years. Theo knows, but saying it out loud like this feels different. Hotter."
Theo felt a jolt low in his gut, arousal stirring despite the odd mix of emotions. He shifted in his seat, watching his wife open up in ways she rarely did sober. Miguel nodded, guiding the moment without pushing. "That's good, Claire. Honest. How does it make you feel, admitting that?"
"Excited," she whispered, eyes flicking to Theo. "And a little guilty, but mostly excited. Like I want to see where it goes."
Theo cleared his throat, his own thoughts racing. The device wasn't hitting him directly, but the atmosphere pulled at him too, curiosity blooming into something more insistent. He couldn't deny the way Claire's admission sparked a fire in him, a strange, submissive thrill mixed with protectiveness.
Miguel deactivated the device after a few minutes, the hum fading. "That's enough for tonight. Think about it. If you want to explore further, my door's open. No rush."
They left soon after, walking home in charged silence. Theo reached for Claire's hand, squeezing it. "You okay?"
She smiled, a new confidence edging into her expression. "More than okay. That was... intense. In a good way. What about you?"
Theo nodded, the stirrings inside him refusing to settle. "Curious. Definitely curious."
The night air wrapped around them as they approached their house, the first step into something unknown already taken.
