The Faulty Install
The Lapwell estate sat on a hill overlooking the city, all glass and steel and geometric angles jutting over manicured gardens. Owen Callahan pulled his beat-up van up the winding driveway and killed the engine, letting out a low whistle. Three stories of tech-billionaire castle. Must be nice.
He grabbed his toolkit from the passenger seat and headed for the front door. The job was simple enough. Install a neural feedback device for some experimental sensory system. Christoph Lapwell had paid half upfront, which meant either the guy was loaded or the job was a nightmare. Probably both.
A tall man with silver-streaked hair answered the door before Owen could knock. Tailored suit, sharp eyes, the kind of posture that said he owned everything within sight.
"Owen Callahan?" The man's voice was smooth, professional.
"That's me. You're Lapwell?"
"Christoph Lapwell. Please come in."
Owen stepped inside and tried not to stare at the marble floors stretching toward floor-to-ceiling windows. Abstract art hung on the walls that probably cost more than his entire life. A woman with dark wavy hair and olive skin walked past carrying a tablet, glancing at him with polite curiosity before disappearing down a hallway.
"My assistant, Lila," Christoph said, not bothering to introduce them properly. "The device is in my study. Follow me."
Owen followed, taking in the space with a technician's eye. Clean lines. Expensive materials. Everything in its place. The study was a massive room with a desk that looked like it belonged in a museum. On the desk sat a sleek black case.
"This is the unit," Christoph said, opening the case to reveal a metallic device about the size of a smartphone. Wires and sensors coiled inside like silver snakes.
Owen set his toolkit down and examined it. "Neural feedback interface. I've worked with these before. Basic models, anyway. This one looks custom."
"Highly custom. It's designed to read and echo neural pleasure signals. The user wears the sensors, the device processes the signals, and it can reproduce those sensations in another connected unit."
"Like a pleasure mirror."
Christoph's lips twitched. "An apt description. I'm interested in the potential for shared sensory experiences. Therapeutic applications, of course."
Owen snorted. "Sure. Therapeutic."
He got to work. The installation was straightforward enough. Connect the sensors to the neural interface, sync the device with the main unit, run diagnostics. Standard tech work. His hands moved with practiced efficiency, calloused fingers finding their rhythm.
Christoph watched from a leather chair, silent and observant.
"You've done this kind of work before," Christoph said. It wasn't a question.
"Fifteen years. Started with home audio systems, moved into neural tech about five years back. The money's better."
"And the work is more interesting."
Owen shrugged. "It pays the bills."
He connected the final wire and powered up the device. The screen flickered to life, displaying neural mapping patterns in cool blue and green. Everything looked normal. He ran the diagnostic, watching the numbers tick up.
"Almost done," Owen said. "Just need to do a final activation check."
He pressed the sequence of buttons that would bring the device online. The screen flashed green. Success.
And then everything went wrong.
A surge of energy shot through the device, up through the wires, into the sensors. Owen felt it hit his chest first, a wave of warmth that spread outward like liquid heat. His breath caught. His hands gripped the edge of the desk.
The sensation was unlike anything he'd ever felt. It started in his chest, a soft swelling pressure that made his nipples tingle and tighten against his shirt. Then it spread downward, a deep pulsing warmth that settled low in his belly. His skin felt alive, hypersensitive, every inch of him suddenly awake and aware.
And then the pleasure hit.
It was soft at first, like the beginning of a good dream. A gentle rolling wave that built and built, washing through him with a sweetness he couldn't name. It was feminine. He knew that somehow, deep in his bones. This was not male desire, sharp and urgent and demanding. This was something else. Something that opened and spread and begged to be touched.
The wave built, cresting higher than should have been possible. Owen gasped, his mouth falling open, a sound escaping him that he didn't recognize. It was soft, breathy, almost a moan. The pleasure concentrated in his chest, in the tightened peaks of his nipples, and then radiated downward through his stomach, pooling between his hips with a deep, aching throb that had nothing to do with his cock. It was deeper than that. Internal. Like his very core was clenching and releasing around nothing, desperate to be filled.
His knees buckled. He caught himself on the desk, knuckles white.
"Mr. Callahan?" Christoph's voice sounded distant, like it was coming through water.
Owen tried to speak. Couldn't. The wave crested and broke, leaving him gasping, trembling, his body humming with residual sensation. Another pulse followed the first, then another, each one rolling through him in rhythms he didn't understand. His hips shifted involuntarily, pressing forward against nothing, seeking friction that wasn't there. The pleasure spiraled tighter, concentrated in places he didn't have, nerve pathways that shouldn't have existed lighting up like a map to somewhere his body had never been.
A final, shuddering wave crashed through him and he bit his lip hard enough to taste copper. His thighs were shaking. His breath came in ragged gasps. For a moment, just a moment, he could have sworn he felt the ghost of wetness between his legs, slick and warm, the echo of an arousal that belonged to a body entirely unlike his own.
And then it was gone.
He straightened up, shaking, and stared at the device. The screen showed normal readings. No errors. No glitches. Nothing.
"What happened?" Christoph asked, leaning forward.
"Nothing. Just a feedback spike. Happens sometimes with new installations." Owen's voice sounded rough, even to his own ears. He cleared his throat. "It's fine. The device is working."
Christoph studied him for a long moment. "You're certain."
"Yeah. I'm certain."
Owen packed up his tools, his hands moving automatically while his mind raced. What the hell was that? He'd never felt anything like it. The pleasure had been so sharp, so specific, so utterly foreign. It didn't belong in his body. It felt like someone else's desire, someone else's arousal, flooding through him like a ghost wearing his skin.
He finished packing and stood up. "The device is fully operational. I'll send you the user manual and warranty information."
"Very good." Christoph stood and walked him to the door. "I'll be in touch if there are any issues."
"Sure. Anytime."
Owen stepped outside and the cool air hit his skin like a shock. His shirt felt rough against his chest, abrasive in a way it never had before. He looked down and saw his nipples were hard, pressing against the fabric, visible even through his work shirt.
What the fuck.
He walked to his van, each step making his clothes brush against his body in ways that felt electric. His thighs, his arms, his back. Everywhere the fabric touched, his skin lit up with sensation. It was distracting. It was overwhelming.
He got in the van and sat there for a minute, hands on the wheel, trying to process what had just happened.
It was just a glitch. A feedback spike. That's all. The device malfunctioned for a second and his brain interpreted the scrambled signals as pleasure. That made sense. That was logical.
But the quality of that pleasure. The way it had felt so soft, so open, so distinctly female. That didn't make sense. That couldn't be explained away.
He started the van and pulled out of the driveway, his body still humming with residual sensitivity. His nipples kept brushing against his shirt with every movement, sending little sparks of sensation through his chest. He shifted in his seat and felt his jeans rub against his thighs, the denim rough and stimulating. The seam pressed against him as he adjusted, and he felt a pulse of warmth answer it from somewhere deep inside, a place that had no business responding.
This was going to be a long drive home.
Every red light was torture. Every vibration from the road traveled up through the seat and into his body, settling in places that still ached with phantom sensation. He gripped the steering wheel tighter, trying to focus on the road, but his body kept betraying him. A bump in the road sent a jolt through him that made him catch his breath. The fabric of his shirt shifted across his chest and he felt his nipples harden again, tight and aching, sending threads of sensation spiraling down through his belly.
By the time he pulled into his apartment complex, Owen felt like he'd been touched by a thousand invisible fingers. His skin was on fire, every nerve ending raw and receptive. He walked up the stairs to his second-floor unit, each step making his thighs brush together, his arms swing against his sides, his chest shift under his shirt.
He locked the door behind him and leaned against it, breathing hard.
The sensitivity was fading now, settling into a dull hum beneath his skin. But it wasn't gone. Not completely. He could still feel the ghost of that pleasure, the echo of that feminine arousal, lingering in his body like a half-remembered dream.
He pressed a hand to his chest, felt the rapid beat of his heart, the tenderness of his nipples. They were still hard, still sensitive, still aching for something he couldn't name.
"Just a glitch," he muttered to himself. "Just a goddamn glitch."
But as he walked to the bathroom and caught his reflection in the mirror, he couldn't shake the feeling that something had changed. Something fundamental. Something he couldn't put back.
His eyes looked different. Softer. More open. And the way his body felt, the way his skin remembered that pleasure, it made him wonder what else the device had done.
He undressed slowly, his clothes catching on his hypersensitive skin, making him gasp and shiver. The work shirt came first, and peeling it over his head sent the fabric dragging across his chest. He had to bite back a moan as the cotton scraped over his peaked nipples, the sensation so intense it bordered on pain. His hands trembled as he reached for his belt, the metal buckle cold against his fingers.
He pushed his jeans down, letting them pool at his ankles, and stepped out of them. The air hit his bare legs and he shivered. His skin was covered in goosebumps, every hair standing on end, as if his body was reaching for something that wasn't there.
When he finally stood naked in front of the mirror, he looked the same. Same brown hair, same average build, same calloused hands.
But he felt different. His body felt like it was waiting for something. Listening for something.
He ran a hand down his chest, just to see, and the touch sent a jolt through him that made his knees weak. His nipples were so sensitive that even the lightest brush of his fingertips made him gasp. He traced around one of them, not quite touching the peak, and felt the sensation echo somewhere lower, somewhere deeper, somewhere that shouldn't have existed.
He let his hand drift lower, over his stomach, feeling the muscles twitch beneath his touch. His skin was so alive, so receptive, that even the brush of his own fingers was almost too much. When his hand reached the crease of his thigh, he paused. His breath was coming faster now. His heart was pounding.
He should stop. He should shower, go to bed, forget this ever happened.
Instead, he let his fingers trail across his inner thigh, and the sensation that rippled through him made him whimper. It was the same soft, open, aching pleasure from before. The same feminine longing. His body was responding in ways he didn't understand, pathways lighting up that had never been there, or maybe had always been there, dormant, waiting for the right signal to wake them.
And somewhere deep in his chest, a small voice whispered that he wanted to feel that pleasure again.
He shook his head and turned away from the mirror. No. He was a repairman. A practical man. He didn't have time for this kind of nonsense.
But as he climbed into bed, the sheets settling against his bare skin, he felt his nipples harden again against the cotton. Every shift of fabric sent fresh waves of sensation through his chest, down through his belly, pooling in that impossible place deep inside him. He pressed his thighs together and felt a pulse of warmth answer the pressure, a slow, aching throb that made him catch his breath.
Something had started tonight. Something he couldn't stop.
And part of him, a part he didn't want to acknowledge, was already hungry for more.
