The Ambush
Leeka Nova soared above the city skyline, her blue-and-gold suit gleaming under the neon haze. The wind whipped through her long auburn hair as she scanned the streets below with piercing blue eyes. Nothing escaped her notice tonight. She felt invincible, the city's top defender, untouchable in her power.
Her energy manipulation crackled at her fingertips, ready to unleash at the first sign of trouble. She had stopped three robberies this week alone, each one ending with criminals begging for mercy. Pride swelled in her chest. No one challenged Nova and won.
She landed softly on a rooftop overlooking the high-tech lab on the east side. Lights flickered inside, and shadows moved where they shouldn't. A smirk tugged at her lips. Another easy night.
Leeka dropped down through an open skylight, her boots hitting the floor with a confident thud. Three henchmen in black gear turned, weapons raised. She didn't give them time to react. Energy blasts erupted from her palms, slamming into the first two and sending them sprawling against the walls. The third charged, but she met him with super strength, grabbing his arm and flipping him effortlessly onto his back.
"Stay down," she said, her voice commanding. The men groaned but didn't move.
A low chuckle echoed from the far end of the lab. Leeka spun, her eyes locking on the tall figure in sleek black armor. Eclipse stood there, shadow projectors humming softly on his shoulders. His sharp gray eyes gleamed with amusement, dark hair framing a face that looked far too calm.
"Nova," he said smoothly. "Right on schedule. I wondered how long it would take you to crash my little party."
Leeka straightened, energy swirling around her hands. "Party's over, Eclipse. Your men are finished. You're next if you don't surrender now."
He stepped closer, his lean six-foot-two frame moving with deliberate grace. "Surrender? That's cute. I've watched you for months, hero. Breaking into labs, blasting through my operations. Always so proud. So sure of that unmatched power."
She snorted, advancing on him. "Save the monologue. I've heard it all before. You're just another tech thief with delusions of grandeur."
Eclipse tilted his head, a cruel smile playing on his lips. "Not quite. You see, proud heroines like you are my specialty. The ones who think they can't be touched. The ones who fly around preaching justice while their egos beg to be shattered. I've been planning this for a long time, Leeka. Your fall will be exquisite."
Leeka's eyes narrowed at the use of her first name, but she pushed the flicker of unease aside. "Big talk from someone about to get cuffed. Last chance."
She lunged forward, energy blast ready. Eclipse dodged with surprising speed, shadows coiling from his armor like living tendrils. They lashed out, but she countered with blasts of her own, the impacts lighting up the lab in bursts of blue and black. Her strength carried her through, landing a solid hit that staggered him against a console.
"Impressive," he said, catching his breath with that same teasing tone. "But predictable. All that arrogance makes you sloppy."
Leeka pressed the advantage, grabbing his collar and slamming him back. "Shut up and fight properly."
His laugh was low and mocking. "Oh, I will. But first, a little reminder of your place."
The dart came from nowhere, a hidden mechanism in the shadows firing with a soft hiss. It struck her shoulder before she could react, the needle sinking deep. A sharp sting spread instantly, followed by a cold wave that drained the heat from her limbs.
Leeka stumbled back, her energy flickering and dying in her hands. "What the hell?"
Eclipse straightened, brushing himself off as if nothing had happened. "Power-dampening tech. Custom made for someone like you. It won't kill your abilities outright. That would be too quick. It just weakens them. Slowly. Painfully."
She tried to summon another blast, but nothing came. Her knees buckled as the effect hit harder, her super strength fading to nothing. The three henchmen she had downed earlier stirred, but Eclipse waved them off with a casual gesture.
"Leave us," he ordered. "This part is mine."
Leeka's vision blurred at the edges. She swung a fist anyway, but it lacked force. Eclipse caught her wrist easily, his grip firm and unyielding.
"First taste of helplessness," he murmured, pulling her close. "Feels different, doesn't it? All that pride cracking already."
She spat a curse, but her voice wavered. Shadows wrapped around her wrists and ankles, binding her tight despite her struggles. The restraints hummed with the same dampening tech, draining what little energy she had left.
Eclipse activated a hidden panel on the wall. A section of the floor slid open, revealing a descent into his hidden lair below the lab. He guided her down the ramp with casual control, her body too weak to resist properly.
The lair opened into a dimly lit chamber lined with tech and shadow projectors. Restraints hung from the ceiling, reinforced with the same dampening fields. Eclipse secured her there, arms stretched above her head, legs spread just enough to keep her off balance. The suit that had once made her feel powerful now clung uselessly, accentuating every curve without the strength to back it up.
Leeka tested the bonds, but they held firm. A cold realization settled in her gut. She had never felt this exposed. This powerless.
"Welcome to the beginning," Eclipse said, circling her slowly. His fingers traced the edge of her suit without touching skin, the contact light but deliberate. "Your city won't miss you for a while. And by the time they do, you'll be something else entirely."
She glared at him, but the fire in her eyes had dimmed. "You're dead when I get free."
He leaned in, his breath warm against her ear. "We'll see about that, Nova. We'll see."
The shadows tightened around her, and for the first time, Leeka Nova tasted true helplessness. Her body betrayed no strength. Her powers stayed silent. And Eclipse watched with patient hunger, already planning the next step in her undoing.
