The Company Event

The ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton glittered under crystal chandeliers, casting warm light across a sea of cocktail dresses and tailored suits. Derek adjusted his tie for the third time, feeling the fabric constrict around his neck like a noose. These corporate events always made him feel small, a middle manager lost in a crowd of executives who spoke in billion-dollar figures and closed deals while he processed spreadsheets.

Bethany touched his arm, her fingers cool and confident. "Relax, Derek. You look fine."

She looked more than fine. Her black dress hugged every curve, the neckline plunging just enough to draw attention without crossing into inappropriate territory. Her dark hair fell in loose waves instead of its usual severe updo, and her lips were painted a deep red that made him want to kiss her right there in front of everyone. But she was already scanning the room, her eyes locking onto targets with the precision of a predator tracking prey.

"Jamal is here," she said, her voice carrying a note of excitement that made Derek's stomach tighten. "I saw him by the bar."

Jamal Thompson. The firm's top closer. The man who brought in more revenue than the next three executives combined. Derek had seen him in meetings, had observed the way he commanded every room he entered with that towering frame and that deep, rumbling voice. He was the kind of man who made Derek feel like a ghost in his own life, invisible and insubstantial.

"Let's go say hello," Bethany said, already pulling him toward the bar.

Derek followed, because that was what he did. He followed Bethany's lead at these events, let her network while he stood beside her like a decorative prop. It had worked for their marriage so far. She was the rising star, and he was the steady foundation. But standing foundation didn't feel steady as they approached the bar.

Jamal turned before they reached him, as if he sensed their approach. His suit was charcoal gray, perfectly tailored to massive shoulders that filled the fabric impressively. He had to be six foot four at least, and every inch of him radiated power. His skin was deep ebony, and his smile revealed perfect white teeth that seemed to gleam in the dim light.

"Bethany," he said, his voice a low rumble that cut through the ambient noise. "I was hoping you'd make it."

He extended his hand, and Bethany took it. He held it a beat longer than necessary, his thumb stroking across her knuckles in a gesture that seemed intimate despite its brevity. Derek watched the exchange, his mind cataloging it as professional warmth. That was what he told himself.

"Wouldn't miss it," Bethany said, her smile bright and polished. "This is my husband, Derek. Derek, this is Jamal Thompson."

Jamal's gaze shifted to Derek, and for a moment, Derek felt himself being measured and found wanting. The handshake was brief, Jamal's grip crushing his fingers before releasing them with what seemed like deliberate carelessness.

"Derek," Jamal said, the name sounding almost dismissive on his tongue. "Bethany's told me a lot about you."

"All good things, I hope," Derek said, forcing a laugh that sounded hollow even to his own ears.

"All professional things," Jamal corrected, his eyes already drifting back to Bethany with an intensity that felt almost physical. "Your wife is one of the sharpest minds in our department. I've been meaning to sit down with her, go over some strategies for the upcoming quarter."

"I'd love that," Bethany said, leaning slightly closer to Jamal in a way that seemed unconscious, drawn toward him like a flower toward sunlight. "I've been studying your closing techniques. The way you handled the Patterson account was masterful."

Jamal laughed, a deep sound that seemed to vibrate through the floor. "You've been doing your homework. That's exactly the kind of initiative I look for in rising talent."

The conversation flowed around Derek like water around a stone. He stood there, sipping his drink, watching his wife light up under another man's attention. Jamal leaned closer to her, his hand occasionally touching her arm, her shoulder, the small of her back. Each touch was brief, professional on the surface, but they accumulated like kindling building toward a flame.

"Can I get you another drink?" Jamal asked Bethany, nodding at her empty glass.

"Actually, I should probably pace myself," Bethany said, but her eyes lingered on Jamal's face with undisguised admiration. "We have that early meeting tomorrow."

"Ah, the nine o'clock with the Henderson group. I'll be there too." Jamal's smile widened, revealing a flash of those perfect teeth. "Maybe we can grab coffee beforehand, go over some talking points."

"I'd like that," Bethany said, and Derek heard something in her voice he hadn't heard in months. Maybe years. It was a warmth, an openness, a breathless quality that she used to reserve for him alone.

Derek cleared his throat. "We should probably mingle a bit more. Bethany, I saw Mark from accounting over by the stage."

Bethany's expression flickered, a brief shadow of irritation crossing her features before she smoothed it away like a professional masking a tell. "Of course. It was great meeting you properly, Jamal."

"The pleasure was all mine," Jamal said, and his eyes swept over Bethany's body with a directness that made Derek's blood run cold. He didn't bother hiding it. He didn't bother pretending. His gaze traced the curve of her hips, the swell of her breasts above that plunging neckline, lingering on details that had no place in a professional assessment.

As they walked away, Derek felt Bethany's hand on his arm, but her touch felt different now. Lighter. More distracted. As if part of her had stayed behind at that bar.

"Did you see how he looked at you?" Derek asked, keeping his voice low.

"Jamal looks at everyone like that," Bethany said, but her cheeks were flushed pink, and she wasn't meeting his eyes. "It's just his style. He's very intense."

"He was flirting with you."

Bethany laughed, but it sounded forced, a deflection rather than genuine amusement. "Don't be ridiculous, Derek. He's my mentor. Well, he's going to be my mentor. This is how networking works."

"You don't have to network by letting him touch you."

She stopped walking and turned to face him, her eyes sharp as glass. "What exactly are you implying?"

"I'm not implying anything. I'm just saying what I saw."

"And what I saw was a senior executive showing interest in my career development. Something I've been working toward for years." Her voice was cold now, the warmth she'd shown Jamal completely absent, reserved only for him apparently. "If you can't support that, then maybe you should just get another drink and let me do the networking."

Derek felt the words hit him like a slap. He opened his mouth to respond, but she was already walking away, her hips swaying with a confidence that seemed amplified, as if she were performing for an audience that still watched from across the room.

The rest of the evening passed in a blur of hollow conversations and empty pleasantries. Derek observed Bethany from across the room, tracked her gradual drift back toward Jamal, noted the way she laughed at his jokes and leaned into his space as if drawn by gravity. Each time Jamal touched her, his large hand finding the curve of her waist or the bare skin of her shoulder, Derek felt something shift inside him, something he couldn't name but that burned like acid.

By the time they left, the tension between them was thick enough to cut with a knife. The car ride home was silent, Bethany staring out the window while Derek gripped the steering wheel until his knuckles went white.

"Are you going to be like this all night?" Bethany asked finally, her voice tired and impatient.

"Like what?"

"Jealous. Possessive. Insecure."

"I'm not jealous. I'm just trying to understand what's happening here."

"Nothing is happening, Derek. I'm networking. That's what ambitious people do." She turned to face him, her expression softening slightly in the dim light of the car. "Jamal can open doors for me. Doors that would take me years to open on my own. Is that so wrong?"

"No, it's not wrong. But the way he looks at you..."

"The way he looks at me is the way a powerful man looks at someone he sees potential in. You're projecting your own insecurities onto him."

Derek wanted to argue, but the words died in his throat. Maybe she was right. Maybe he was being paranoid. Maybe Jamal was just a charismatic executive who saw talent in his wife and nothing more.

But he remembered the way Jamal's hand had lingered on Bethany's lower back, the way his eyes had traced her curves with unmistakable hunger, the way his voice had dropped to an intimate register when he spoke to her. That wasn't professional interest. That was something else entirely. That was a man staking a claim.

They arrived home, and Bethany went straight to the bedroom, claiming exhaustion. Derek stayed in the living room, staring at the dark television screen, replaying the evening in his mind like footage he could pause and examine for clues he'd missed.

He thought about Bethany's flushed cheeks when Jamal spoke to her. The way she had dismissed his concerns so quickly, so defensively. The distance that had grown between them over the course of a single evening, a chasm that seemed to widen with every passing minute.

Something had changed tonight. He could feel it in his bones, a shift in the foundation of his marriage that he couldn't stop or control. He thought about confronting her again, about demanding she stay away from Jamal, but he knew how that would end. She would accuse him of being controlling, of holding her back, of not trusting her.

And maybe she would be right.

But maybe she would be wrong too.

Derek sat in the dark, listening to the silence of his home, and wondered if he had already lost his wife to a man who had barely spoken to her for an hour. The thought made him sick to his stomach, but it also stirred something else. Something dark and curious that he didn't want to acknowledge, a sick fascination with the way Jamal had looked at her, the way she had responded.

He pushed it down, buried it deep where it couldn't breathe, and went to join his wife in bed. She was already asleep, her back turned to him, the space between them feeling wider than it had ever been. An ocean of cool sheets and unspoken words.

Derek lay awake, staring at the ceiling, and waited for morning to come while his mind replayed every touch, every glance, every loaded word from the evening. When sleep finally claimed him, it was fitful and full of dreams he would not remember clearly, though they left him sweating and disturbed when the alarm finally broke through the darkness.
