The Promotion
Ryan sat at his desk, staring at the same spreadsheet he had opened three hours ago. The numbers blurred together, a reminder of how little had changed in the two years since he had taken this mid-level manager role. He adjusted his tie, the fabric suddenly tight around his neck, and glanced at the clock. Five minutes until the all-hands meeting. His stomach tightened with the familiar mix of hope and dread that always came before these announcements.
Elena had left for her HR department earlier that morning with her usual brisk kiss on the cheek. "Don't overthink it," she had said, her sharp features softening just enough to show she meant it. Their marriage ran on routines like that now. Ambitious in her own career, she understood his frustration but rarely lingered on it. They both chased promotions in their separate corners of the company, and lately it felt like they were running in place together.
The conference room filled quickly. Ryan took his usual seat near the back, notebook open, pen ready. He scanned the faces, noting the usual mix of tired eyes and forced smiles. Then Brock walked in, tall and broad-shouldered in a crisp charcoal suit that made everyone else look underdressed. The man carried himself like he already owned the room, and today he probably did.
"Thanks for coming," Brock said, his voice carrying without effort. "Big news today. Effective immediately, I'm stepping up to Senior Director of Operations. The board decided the department needed fresh leadership, and here we are."
Ryan's pen slipped from his fingers. The promotion he had quietly applied for, the one he had spent months preparing for with extra reports and late nights, had gone to Brock. The same Brock who had spent the last year undermining him in meetings, assigning him the worst projects, and laughing it off later like it was all in good fun.
"Ryan," Brock called out, locking eyes with him across the table. A slow smile spread across his face. "You'll be reporting directly to me now. We have a lot of cleanup work ahead. I'll need you to handle the quarterly filing and the vendor audits starting this afternoon. Get those off my desk by end of week."
The words landed like a slap. Filing and audits were entry-level tasks, the kind Ryan had delegated to juniors when he first arrived. Around the table, a few colleagues shifted uncomfortably, but no one spoke up. Brock clapped his hands once, ending the meeting, and the room emptied quickly.
Ryan stayed behind, gathering his notebook with slow movements. Brock lingered near the door, already scrolling through his phone.
"Don't look so surprised," Brock said without looking up. "You know how these things go. Play the game better next time."
Ryan swallowed the reply that rose in his throat. "Understood," he managed. His voice came out quieter than he intended.
By mid-afternoon the first stack of files landed on Ryan's desk. Brock dropped them without ceremony, the papers sliding across the surface in a messy heap.
"Start with these. Cross-check every invoice. I want them perfect before they hit my inbox."
Ryan nodded, already flipping through the top folder. The work was tedious, the kind that would keep him at his desk long after everyone else left. He could feel Brock's presence still hovering, watching.
"And Ryan," Brock added, leaning one hand on the cubicle wall. "Elena mentioned the company mixer tonight. Make sure she knows it's mandatory for the new leadership team. Wouldn't want her missing out on introductions."
The mention of Elena sent a small flare of irritation through Ryan's chest. Brock had never shown interest in their personal lives before. Ryan forced a neutral expression. "She'll be there."
The mixer started at seven in the main conference room, transformed with cheap catering and dimmed lights. Ryan arrived with Elena at his side, her dark hair pulled back in a sleek ponytail that highlighted the line of her jaw. She wore a fitted navy dress that stopped just above the knee, professional but with enough shape to draw a second glance. Ryan placed a hand at the small of her back as they entered, a habit more than a claim.
Brock stood near the bar, drink in hand, surrounded by a cluster of senior staff. His eyes tracked them the moment they stepped inside. Ryan felt the weight of that gaze immediately, heavier than it had been in the office.
"Elena," Brock said, breaking away from the group to approach them. He extended a hand, and she took it with her usual polite smile. "Good to see you outside the HR reports. Ryan tells me you're handling the new compliance training rollout."
"That's right," Elena answered. Her tone stayed professional, but Ryan noticed the slight tilt of her head as she met Brock's eyes. "It's been a busy quarter for everyone."
Brock held the handshake a beat longer than necessary. His thumb brushed once across her knuckles before he released it. Ryan watched the small motion and felt something shift in his gut, a low, uneasy twist he couldn't name yet.
"You should join the leadership offsite next month," Brock continued, his attention fixed on Elena. "We could use someone with your eye for policy in those sessions. Ryan can cover the home front while you're gone."
Elena glanced at Ryan, a quick check-in. He managed a small nod, though the suggestion sat wrong. Brock's smile widened, and he stepped closer to refill his drink, his shoulder brushing Ryan's as he passed.
The evening stretched on with forced small talk and refilled glasses. Ryan stayed near Elena, but Brock circled back twice more, each time directing his questions at her, his posture angled to block Ryan from the conversation. The possessive weight in Brock's stare grew more obvious with each pass. It lingered on the curve of Elena's hip when she turned to grab a napkin, on the line of her collarbone when she laughed at something polite.
Ryan sipped his drink and tried to focus on the chatter around him. His mind kept returning to the files waiting on his desk and the way Brock had looked at his wife like she was already part of some private plan. The promotion had changed more than titles. Ryan could feel the ground tilting beneath his feet, slow and inevitable, and he wasn't sure yet whether to push back or brace for the fall.
By the time they left, Elena's hand found his again in the parking lot. "He seems intense," she said quietly. "But ambitious men usually are."
Ryan didn't answer. He drove them home in silence, the image of Brock's eyes following Elena through the crowd still sharp behind his own. The stagnant days ahead suddenly felt anything but routine.
