Policy Unveiled
Lyla Halprin stood before the full-length mirror in her office, smoothing the fabric of her navy pencil skirt with both hands. The hem sat a full two inches higher than her usual corporate standard, brushing mid-thigh instead of just above the knee. She had chosen it that morning after rereading the wellness policy draft one last time, telling herself it projected approachability and modern energy. Still, the decision left a flutter low in her stomach that she refused to name.
She checked her watch. Ten minutes until the all-hands meeting. The open-plan floor outside her glass door already hummed with arriving staff. Lyla gathered the printed handouts, her tablet, and the clicker for the presentation slides. Everything was organized, every bullet point rehearsed. As HR manager she had written the entire wellness initiative herself, framing it as a forward-thinking program to boost morale, reduce stress, and encourage authentic self-expression in the workplace.
The skirt felt lighter than she remembered when she stepped into the corridor. Heads turned. Not dramatically, just small shifts in posture, eyes flicking downward before returning to conversations. Lyla kept her chin lifted and her stride purposeful, the click of her heels steady against the polished concrete.
The conference room was already half full when she entered. Rows of chairs faced the large screen at the front. She set her materials on the podium, adjusted the microphone, and took a slow breath. The skirt rode up another fraction when she sat on the edge of the table to connect her tablet. She tugged it down once, then forced her hands to still.
Colleagues filed in. Bryan from marketing offered a quick nod as he took a seat in the second row. His gaze lingered a beat longer than usual on her crossed legs before he opened his laptop. Lyla felt the warmth of that look settle between her thighs and immediately scolded herself for noticing. She was here to present policy, nothing more.
At exactly nine o'clock Ryan Sterling entered through the side door. The CEO moved with the unhurried confidence of a man who knew every eye would follow him. Salt-and-pepper hair perfectly in place, charcoal suit tailored to his tall frame, he gave Lyla a brief, approving smile before taking the seat reserved for him at the front.
She began the presentation. Her voice stayed level as she walked the room through the new wellness framework: flexible hours, mental health resources, and the more innovative clause about attire and personal comfort. "We want every team member to feel free to express their individuality," she said, clicking to the next slide. "Within professional boundaries, of course."
While she spoke, awareness prickled along her skin. Several pairs of eyes kept drifting to her legs. The skirt had ridden slightly when she shifted her weight, revealing an extra inch of olive skin. She resisted the urge to pull it lower. Instead she focused on the next point, describing how relaxed dress codes could improve afternoon energy levels. Each time she moved to gesture at the screen, she felt the fabric tug higher. The sensation sent an unexpected pulse of heat through her core.
Anxiety tightened her chest even as that warmth spread. She was the head of HR. She could not afford to look unprofessional. Yet the weight of those stares made her nipples tighten against the thin silk of her blouse. She cleared her throat and continued, voice steady despite the conflicting signals racing through her body.
Halfway through the Q&A portion, Ryan stood. The room quieted at once.
"Lyla," he said, his tone warm and carrying. "I want to publicly thank you for the thoroughness and courage behind this initiative. Most HR leaders would have played it safe. You chose to push us toward something genuinely progressive. Your commitment sets the tone for the entire company."
Applause rippled through the room. Lyla felt her cheeks warm. Ryan held her gaze a moment longer than necessary, the corner of his mouth lifting in a private smile that no one else seemed to catch. The praise landed like a hand at the small of her back, guiding her forward even as it made her pulse race.
When the meeting ended, staff lingered to shake her hand and ask follow-up questions. Bryan waited until the crowd thinned.
"Interesting direction," he said, his eyes flicking down once more before returning to her face. "I think people are going to respond well."
Lyla managed a professional smile. "That's the goal."
Back at her desk she closed the door and sank into her chair. The skirt had ridden all the way to the tops of her thighs. She left it there, staring at the pale strip of skin above her stockings. The memory of every lingering glance replayed behind her eyes. Her heart still hammered, but the anxiety had begun to shift into something hotter, something that made her press her knees together beneath the desk.
She opened a new document and typed a single line: "Wellness program successfully introduced. Next steps to be determined." Her fingers hovered over the keys. The thrill that had accompanied the stares refused to fade. It sat low in her belly, insistent and unfamiliar.
Lyla exhaled slowly and minimized the window. Outside her office the normal rhythm of the day continued, yet nothing felt quite the same. She reached down and adjusted the hem of her skirt half an inch higher before opening her email to begin the next round of implementation tasks.
