The New Boss Arrives

Fiona stepped into the hotel ballroom and immediately wished she had stayed home. The room pulsed with the low hum of expensive conversation and clinking glasses. Men in tailored suits and women in sharp dresses clustered in tight groups, their laughter sharp and confident. She tugged at the hem of her modest navy blouse, the fabric suddenly feeling too soft, too ordinary against her skin.

Nolan had insisted she come. “It’s just a welcome party for the new VP,” he had said that morning, kissing her cheek while knotting his tie. “You’ll be fine.” Now, standing alone near the entrance, she felt anything but fine. Every other woman seemed to belong here, their power suits and red lips broadcasting ambition she had never learned how to wear.

She spotted Nolan across the room, already deep in conversation with two senior managers. He looked good, tall and relaxed in his charcoal suit, one hand in his pocket as he smiled at something someone said. Fiona started toward him, weaving between servers carrying trays of champagne.

“Fiona Jennings?” A smooth voice cut through the noise. Fiona turned and found herself facing a woman who seemed to command the space around her without effort. Hazel Harris stood at least five inches taller, her blonde hair pulled into a sleek ponytail that exposed the sharp line of her jaw. The black dress she wore hugged an athletic frame and stopped just above the knee, professional yet unmistakably sensual. Her blue eyes flicked over Fiona once, quick and assessing.

“I’m Hazel,” she said, extending a hand. Her grip was firm, warm. “Nolan’s new boss. I’ve heard so much about the woman who keeps that handsome husband of his fed and happy at home.”

Fiona managed a smile. “It’s nice to meet you. Congratulations on the position.”

Hazel’s lips curved, but the expression didn’t reach her eyes. “Thank you. I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot of each other. Nolan has already proven himself indispensable after only two weeks.” She glanced past Fiona toward the bar. “There he is. Shall we?”

Before Fiona could answer, Hazel placed a light hand at the small of her back and guided her forward. The touch felt proprietary, as though Hazel were steering a piece of office furniture rather than another person.

Nolan turned as they approached, his face lighting up at the sight of his wife. “Fiona, you made it. Hazel, I see you’ve already found her.”

“I did,” Hazel replied, stepping closer to Nolan than was strictly necessary. “She’s exactly as you described. So domestic. It must be nice having someone who actually enjoys staying home while the rest of us claw our way up the ladder.”

Fiona felt heat rise in her cheeks. Nolan chuckled, but the sound came out slightly strained. “Fiona keeps things running smoothly. I couldn’t do half of what I do without her.”

Hazel’s gaze lingered on Nolan’s face, then dropped to his mouth for a fraction of a second. “I’m sure. Still, I imagine it gets lonely for her sometimes, waiting by the door with dinner while her husband stays late at the office.” She reached out and brushed an imaginary speck from Nolan’s lapel, her fingers trailing down his arm before settling just above his elbow. The contact lasted longer than polite. “You’ll have to let me borrow him more often, Fiona. He’s far too talented to waste on early nights.”

Fiona opened her mouth, but no words came. She watched Hazel’s manicured fingers rest against the dark fabric of Nolan’s sleeve, the thumb moving in a slow, almost absent stroke. Nolan didn’t pull away. If anything, he leaned slightly into the touch, his posture shifting into something more attentive.

A strange sensation unfurled low in Fiona’s stomach. Jealousy, sharp and familiar, twisted first. Then something hotter followed, something that made her pulse jump between her legs. She hated the feeling immediately, yet it refused to fade. Hazel’s hand remained, and Nolan’s eyes stayed fixed on the taller woman’s face with an intensity Fiona had not seen directed at her in months.

“I’m sure we can work something out,” Nolan said, his voice lower than usual. “Fiona understands how important these opportunities are.”

Hazel smiled fully then, a slow, satisfied expression. “Good. I like a woman who knows her place.” She finally withdrew her hand, but the absence left a visible charge in the air between them. “Fiona, you must come to the next team dinner. I insist. It’ll be good for you to see what your husband actually does all those late nights.”

Fiona nodded, throat dry. “Of course.”

Hazel turned her full attention back to Nolan, launching into a discussion about quarterly projections. Fiona stood beside them, forgotten, listening to the easy rhythm of their conversation. Every few moments Hazel would touch Nolan again, a brief press of fingers to his forearm, a light laugh that brought her shoulder against his. Each contact sent another confusing spark through Fiona’s body. She told herself it was anger, protectiveness, anything but the slow, liquid heat gathering between her thighs.

When Hazel finally excused herself to greet another group, Nolan looked at Fiona with an apologetic half-smile. “She’s intense, isn’t she?”

“She seems very sure of herself,” Fiona managed. Her voice sounded thin even to her own ears.

Nolan squeezed her hand once, then released it. “I should probably circulate. You okay here?”

Fiona nodded. She watched him walk away, watched the way Hazel’s eyes tracked him across the room. The spark inside her refused to die. It pulsed instead, a secret, shameful rhythm she did not yet have a name for. She pressed her thighs together beneath her skirt and wondered, with a mixture of dread and unwilling curiosity, what else the new boss intended to take from her.
