Lila Harrington stepped out of the sleek black car and onto the marble steps of the mountain resort, her heels clicking against the stone with a crisp finality. The air smelled of pine and crisp evening chill, and the sprawling lodge glowed with warm golden lights against the darkening sky. She adjusted the silk wrap of her emerald dress, the fabric clinging to her toned curves in all the right ways, and felt the familiar mix of poise and hesitation settle in her chest. Elegant, yes. Tentative, absolutely. This was Nolan's idea, after all, a chance for her to network among the tech elite while he stayed behind to handle a last-minute client call back home.
Inside, the evening mixer hummed with low laughter and the clink of crystal. Lila accepted a glass of champagne from a passing tray and moved through the crowd, her long auburn hair swept over one shoulder. Heads turned, as they often did, but she kept her smile polite and her posture straight. She was here to make connections, nothing more. Yet the weight of her husband's earlier text lingered in her mind. "Go shine, baby. You deserve every eye in the room."
She had just found a quiet corner near the tall windows when a presence shifted the air beside her. Ronan Steele. She recognized the name from the attendee list, the billionaire developer whose projects dominated skylines across the country. He stood tall at six-three, his powerful frame filling out a tailored charcoal suit, salt-and-pepper hair catching the light. His piercing blue eyes met hers without hesitation.
"Mrs. Harrington," he said, voice smooth and commanding, like velvet over steel. "Ronan Steele. I've been hoping to meet the woman whose reputation for strategic insight precedes her."
Lila offered her hand, and his fingers closed around it with a firm, lingering warmth. "Mr. Steele. I'm flattered you know my name."
"Ronan, please. And flattery has nothing to do with it." His gaze held hers, magnetic and unhurried. "Your work on the Harrington portfolio caught my attention. Mind if I join you for a drink?"
She nodded, pulse quickening despite herself. They moved to the bar together, where he ordered two old fashioneds without asking her preference. The gesture should have rankled. Instead, it sent a small, unexpected thrill through her.
Conversation flowed easily at first, light and professional. He asked about her latest projects, listened with genuine focus, then steered the topic toward her. "You carry yourself like someone who knows exactly what she wants," Ronan said, leaning in just enough that his cologne, something dark and expensive, wrapped around her. "But there's a spark underneath. Something waiting to be coaxed out."
Lila laughed softly, the sound breathier than intended. "You read people quickly."
"Only the interesting ones." His eyes flicked over her face, then lower, appreciating the neckline of her dress without crossing into crudeness. "I'd like to connect more while you're here. Private conversation, perhaps. No pressure, just opportunity."
Her phone vibrated in her clutch. She glanced down to see Nolan's name on the screen. "Saw the way he looked at you from across the room. He's into you. Play along if you want. I'm right here."
Heat rose in her cheeks. Nolan was watching remotely through the event app he'd set up for security, she realized, and the knowledge that he approved sent a confusing rush through her. She typed back quickly. "He's bold. Attractive. You sure?"
His reply came fast. "Absolutely. Tell me how it feels."
She slipped the phone away and met Ronan's gaze again. "I might be open to that," she said, voice steady even as her stomach fluttered. The attraction was mutual and undeniable, a low hum beneath every word. Ronan smiled, slow and knowing, and handed her his card. "My penthouse is on the top floor. Text when you're ready."
The rest of the mixer passed in a blur. Lila circulated, smiled, shook hands, but her thoughts kept drifting back to Ronan's invitation and the way his presence had made the room feel smaller, more charged. By the time she excused herself and rode the elevator to her suite, her skin felt alive, sensitive to every brush of fabric.
Alone in the plush room, she kicked off her heels and sank onto the edge of the bed. Her phone lit up again with Nolan's message. "You looked stunning tonight. The chemistry was obvious even from here. How are you feeling?"
Lila stared at the screen, fingers hovering. The first stirrings of something new moved through her, a sensual awakening she hadn't expected. She typed slowly, honestly. "Excited. A little nervous. He invited me up. I told him I'd think about it."
Nolan's response came almost immediately. "Good. Take your time. I'm hard just imagining it. This is what we talked about. You deserve to feel wanted like that."
She exhaled, a smile tugging at her lips. The loyalty to her husband remained, steady and warm, but threaded through it was the first flicker of curiosity, of possibility. Ronan Steele had opened a door, and Nolan had given her permission to step through. For the first time in years, Lila Harrington felt the edges of her world shifting, elegant and tentative no longer.
