Inseam

The shop breathed. Steam from the iron curled toward the pressed-tin ceiling, carrying the scent of wool and the faintest trace of chalk. Hester Lusk moved her palm across the bolt of charcoal worsted, feeling for imperfections she already knew weren't there. Behind her, the triple mirror stood angled like a triptych, its glass dark and waiting.

She heard Kellan shift on the platform. The boards creaked beneath his weight.

"Still," she said without turning.

He stopped moving. He always did.

She let the silence stretch, enjoying the way it settled into the corners of the room. Late evening meant no customers. No interruptions. Just the two of them and the work she had planned.

When she finally turned, he stood exactly where she had left him. Barefoot on the polished wood. Arms slightly away from his sides. He wore the charcoal trousers she had cut last week and a simple white undershirt that showed the lean lines of his frame.

Her dummy. Her husband.

She picked up the measuring tape.

"Arms up."

He raised them. She stepped close enough to smell the soap on his skin, the warmth of him. The tape went around his chest, and she noted the slight flutter of his breath.

"You know who called today," she said, not looking at his face.

"Who?" His voice came quiet.

"Vaughn Trent. He wants a full reconstruction. Three suits, maybe more." She let the tape loosen, then tighten again. "He watched you last time. Did you notice?"

Kellan's throat moved. "I didn't."

"You never do." She drew the tape down to his waist, marking the measurement with her thumb. "He watched you stand here. Watched me pin the waist. He didn't look at the fabric once."

She felt the change in his posture. A fractional tightening.

"He has a gaze like a press," she continued, keeping her voice low and even. "Heavy. Hot. The kind that leaves marks even when nothing touches you."

The tape slid down to his hips. She let her knuckles graze the bone there.

"I've been thinking about that gaze," she said. "About what it would do to you if he kept looking. If I let him."

Kellan's eyes stayed fixed on the wall ahead of him. "Hester."

"Don't move."

She released the tape and walked to the counter where her chalk and pins waited. She picked up a piece of blue tailor's chalk and turned back to him.

"Hand."

He extended his right hand. She took it, turned it palm up, and drew a line from his wrist to the base of his thumb. A measurement line. A mark.

"I told him to come Thursday," she said. "For the first fitting."

"Okay."

"Okay?" She looked up at him. "You don't want to know what I told him about you?"

"I trust you."

She smiled. It was not a gentle smile. "I told him you were the best form I've ever had. That you hold still better than any mannequin. That you take pins without flinching."

She released his hand and stepped back.

"And I told him you were learning."

"Learning what?"

She picked up a pin from the cushion. She pressed its tip against her thumb, testing the sharpness.

"Learning to stay still while I talk about you. While I describe what he sees. While I measure you for the suit he'll wear when he takes what I give him."

Kellan's chest rose and fell. Once. Twice.

She walked around him slowly, her fingers trailing across his shoulders, his back, the curve of his spine. She stopped behind him and pressed her palm flat between his shoulder blades.

"Turn."

He turned to face the triple mirror. She stood behind him, her reflection split into three versions of herself.

"Look."

He looked. The mirrors multiplied them. Kellan stared back at himself, at her standing behind him, at the dark shop reflected in endless recession.

"This is where it will happen," she said. "On this platform. In these mirrors. He'll stand here, and you'll stand there." She pointed to the smaller box in the corner. The kneeling box. "And you'll watch."

She came around to his front again. She placed her hand on his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart.

"He'll put his hands on me," she said. "Here." She guided his hand to her throat. "Here."

His fingers spread across her neck. Warm. Trembling slightly.

"And you'll hold still."

She held his gaze in the mirror. The reflections watched from every angle, witnesses to what was being built between them.

"Because you're the form," she said. "The dummy. You're what makes the suit perfect for him."

His hand stayed on her throat. She felt his pulse in his fingers, faster now.

"And you're going to like it."

She saw the question in his eyes. The doubt.

"You're going to like it," she repeated, "because I'm going to make sure you do. I'm going to talk you through it. I'm going to pin notes to your chest that describe exactly what I want. And you're going to read them. You're going to say them back to me."

She stepped closer, pressing her body against his. The pins in his waistband pressed into her hip.

"And when he comes, you're going to stand on that box and watch him take what I offer, and you're going to stay still until I tell you to move."

His hand tightened on her throat. Not enough to hurt. Enough to hold.

"Say you understand," she said.

"I understand."

"Say you want this."

His jaw worked. She watched him struggle with it. Watched him decide.

"I want this."

She smiled again. Softer this time.

"Good boy."

She took his hand from her throat and led him to the counter. She picked up a small square of paper and a pencil. She wrote slowly, letting him watch.

You are the form. You hold still. You hold everything.

She folded the note and picked up a long pin.

"Turn."

He turned. She lifted his undershirt and pinned the note to the inside of his collar, where it would rest against his skin.

"A reminder," she said. "For when you doubt."

He laughed. A short, surprised sound that turned into something else. Something tighter.

"Did that feel good?" she asked.

"I don't know."

"You laughed. Then you got hard. I felt it."

He looked away. She caught his chin and turned him back.

"Don't hide from me. Not in here."

"I'm sorry."

"Don't apologize." She ran her hand down his chest, over his stomach, stopping at the waistband of the trousers. "This is what's supposed to happen. The pins, the notes, the talk. It's all part of the fitting."

She pressed her palm flat against him, feeling the heat of him through the wool. He was fully hard now, the length of him straining against the fabric, and she traced the outline with her fingers. Slow. Deliberate. The way she would trace a seam before cutting.

"And this," she said, "is the measurement I care about most."

His breath caught. She kept her hand there, feeling him twitch beneath her touch.

"Because it tells me you're still with me." She curled her fingers around him through the wool, squeezing gently. "Still here. Still mine."

A sound escaped him. Low. Barely there.

She held him there, her hand steady, her gaze locked on his. She could feel his pulse beating through the fabric, could feel the dampness gathering where the wool met his skin.

"Does that feel good?" she asked.

"You know it does."

"Tell me."

"It feels..." He swallowed. "It feels like you're claiming me."

"I am." She stroked him through the trousers, a slow drag of her palm from base to tip. "Every inch of you is mine. The fit is mine. The form is mine. What he gets is mine to give."

His hips pushed forward, just slightly. She pressed her other hand to his hip, holding him still.

"Did I say you could move?"

"No."

"No," she agreed. She kept stroking, slow and maddening, watching his face in the mirror. Watching his composure crack. "But you can feel. I want you to feel everything."

She worked him through the wool until the fabric was damp and his breathing came ragged. Then she stopped. Pulled her hand away.

"Thursday," she said. "He comes Thursday."

"I know."

"You'll stand on the box. You'll watch. You'll hold still."

"Yes."

"And when it's over, I'll pin another note to you. And you'll read it. And you'll say it back to me."

She released him and stepped back. He stood there, trembling, still hard, the outline of him visible through the damp wool.

"Now take off the trousers. I need to adjust the inseam."

He reached for the button. His fingers fumbled.

"Carefully," she said. "Don't pull the pins."

He worked the button free, then slid the trousers down his legs. He stepped out of them, standing in his undershirt and briefs, the note pinned to his collar. His arousal pressed against the thin cotton, the head of him dark and visible through the fabric.

She picked up the trousers and examined the seams. She found the place where the fit needed correction and marked it with chalk.

"Come here."

He stepped closer. She knelt before him.

"The inseam is too long," she said. "I need to measure you again."

She ran her tape from his ankle up the inside of his calf. Up his thigh. She watched him watch her. When she reached the top of his thigh, she let her fingers brush against him through the briefs. He shuddered.

"You're going to remember this," she said. She pressed the tape against his inner thigh, high, where the seam would sit. "Every time he comes in. Every time I kneel." She looked up at him from below, her face level with his hips. "You're going to remember that I measured you for him."

She set the tape aside but didn't stand. Instead, she hooked her fingers into the waistband of his briefs and pulled them down, freeing him. He sprang out, flushed and rigid, the tip already wet.

"Hester."

"Still," she said.

She picked up the tape again. She wrapped it around the base of him, noting the measurement with her thumb. Then she drew it along his length, slow, letting the cool fabric of the tape contrast with the heat of him.

"This is the measurement I care about most," she said. "I told you that already."

She wrapped her hand around him, bare skin now, no wool between them. He groaned.

"Feel that?" she asked. "That's mine. He doesn't get this. He gets what I make. He gets the suit. But this..." She stroked him once, twice, watching his face. "This stays with me."

She leaned forward and breathed against him. Warm air. Close. Not touching.

"Tell me what you want."

"I want..." His voice broke. "I want you."

"You have me." She stroked him again, slower. "You've always had me. But Thursday, you're going to watch someone else have me too. And you're going to stay still. And you're going to be hard. Just like this."

She took him in her mouth.

He made a sound that wasn't a word. His hands came to her shoulders, gripping, and she pulled back.

"Hands at your sides."

He obeyed. His fingers twitched against his thighs.

She took him again, deeper this time. She tasted salt and wool and skin. She worked him slowly, her tongue tracing the underside of him, her hand wrapped around the base. The mirrors caught them from every angle. She could see his reflection, the way his jaw clenched, the way his chest heaved.

She pulled back again, letting him feel the cool air.

"Look at us," she said. "Look at what we look like."

He looked. His reflection stared back, wild-eyed, desperate. Hers knelt before him, composed, in control.

"This is what he's going to see," she said. "This is what he's going to want. And I'm going to let him want it. But I'm not going to let him have it."

She took him back into her mouth and worked him until his breathing turned to gasps, until his thighs trembled, until his fingers dug into his own flesh to keep from reaching for her.

Then she stopped.

She stood. She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand.

"Thursday," she said.

"Thursday."

She pinned the trousers to the form and turned off the iron. The shop settled around them, dark and quiet and full of what was coming.

"Let's go home," she said.

He followed her to the door. She locked it behind them.

In the street, under the yellow glow of the streetlamp, he took her hand.

She let him hold it.

But she was already thinking about the note she would pin to him tomorrow. And the day after that. And the day after that.

Until Thursday.
