Sealed Box

Blake Donovan adjusted the magnifying loupe over his right eye and leaned closer to the seam he was restitching. The 1920s beaded shift dress lay spread across his worktable, its delicate seed pearls catching the warm glow of the overhead lamp. He worked late most nights. The solitude suited him, allowed him to focus entirely on the precise work that had built his reputation in the small but demanding world of vintage garment restoration.

The shop around him was a museum of half finished projects. Silk kimonos hung from padded hangers along the far wall. A rack of Victorian blouses waited for new buttons. Hat boxes stacked nearly to the ceiling held treasures he had not yet catalogued. Every surface bore evidence of his craft: spools of thread in every shade, packets of antique lace, jars of glass beads sorted by color and size. The air carried the scent of old fabric, lavender sachets, and the faint chemical tang of cleaning solutions.

He finished the seam and sat back, rolling his shoulders. The clock on his wall read late, later than he had realized. He should pack up, head home to his quiet apartment, sleep. But his eyes drifted to the corner of the shop where a new acquisition sat untouched.

The box was unremarkable from the outside. Brown cardboard, taped at all seams with yellowed packing tape that had begun to curl at the edges. But the label was what had caught his attention when it arrived that afternoon. "Contents: One (1) Evening Gown, circa 1925. DO NOT OPEN. Deliver to recipient only." Below that, the name of a private collector he had worked with before. Dominic Santos. Wealthy, discerning, particular about provenance.

He had set the box aside, intending to process it in the morning. But now, in the quiet of the empty shop, his curiosity gnawed at him like a physical thing. He finished coiling the thread he had been using and set the spool in its place. The shift dress was done. He had no more work tonight.

Except for that box.

Blake stood and walked to the corner. The box sat on a low table, waiting with the patience of something that had already waited decades. He ran his fingers over the tape, feeling the age of it. The label was typed, not printed, which suggested it had been sealed for at least fifty years. Who sealed a garment like this? And why the instruction not to open it?

His professional instincts told him to respect the request. His curiosity told him something else entirely.

He picked up the box. It was lighter than he expected, as if it held nothing more than air and silk. He carried it to his worktable and set it down beside the finished shift dress. The lamp light fell across the brown surface, revealing faint water stains and the ghost of an old shipping label beneath the current one.

He should stop. He should wait for morning.

But his hands were already working at the tape.

The seal broke with a soft tearing sound that seemed too loud in the quiet shop. He peeled the flaps open and found layers of acid free tissue paper inside, yellowed with age but still intact. Carefully, reverently, he parted the paper.

And stopped breathing.

The gown inside was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.

The fabric was a deep emerald silk charmeuse that seemed to glow even in the dim lamplight. Thousands of tiny crystal beads caught the light and scattered it like stars, like scattered emeralds, like the eyes of something watching him from the dark. The cut was daring for the era: a deep V neckline that would plunge nearly to the waist, a back that would bare almost everything down to the tailbone. The skirt was bias cut, designed to skim and cling to every curve with an intimacy that bordered on indecent.

Blake's hands trembled as he lifted it from the box. The silk slipped through his fingers like water, impossibly soft, cool and then warm as if it had absorbed his body heat before he even touched it. He held it up, letting it fall to its full length, and the beads caught the light again, sparkling, beckoning. The gown seemed to move of its own accord, swaying gently as if stirred by a breeze that did not exist in his closed shop.

He had to check it. That was his professional justification. He needed to assess its condition before delivering it to the client. He needed to see how the fabric moved, how it hung. He needed to ensure there were no hidden damages, no weak seams, no stains that required treatment.

But the real reason, the one he pushed down and refused to acknowledge, was simpler. He wanted to feel it against his skin.

He glanced at the door. Locked. The blinds were drawn. The street outside was quiet. No one would see.

The rational part of his mind raised objections. He ignored them.

He undressed quickly, efficiently, hanging his shirt and pants on the back of his chair. In his undershirt and boxers, he felt exposed, foolish. The shop lights seemed too bright, the mirrors too many. But the gown waited, and his hands moved of their own accord.

He stepped into the skirt first, pulling the silk up over his legs. The fabric was cool against his skin, then warm, as if it had absorbed his body heat instantly. It was like stepping into a bath, into an embrace. He worked it up over his hips, and the bias cut conformed to his body in ways that felt wrong and right simultaneously. The silk clung to the shape of his thighs, his waist, the curve of his ass.

The bodice was next. He slipped his arms into the narrow straps and pulled the rest of the gown up. The deep V of the neckline fell against his chest, the silk molding to his torso. He reached behind himself, fumbling with the small hooks and eyes that closed the back. His fingers were clumsy, but eventually he managed.

The gown settled against him like a second skin.

And everything changed.

A wave of heat washed through him, starting at his chest and radiating outward. His skin tingled, prickled, as if a thousand tiny needles were dancing across his flesh. The sensation was not painful. It was electric, alive, almost pleasurable. It was as if his nerve endings had been asleep his entire life and were only now waking.

He looked down at himself and saw nothing different. The gown hung on his lean frame, the deep V gaping against his flat chest, the skirt pooling around his narrow hips. He looked like a man in a dress. Nothing more.

But the heat continued to build. It pooled low in his belly, spread down into his groin. He felt himself hardening against the silk, and the sensation was sharp, intense, more acute than any arousal he had experienced before. It was as if the fabric itself was touching him, caressing him, learning the shape of him.

Then he heard the voice.

"Finally."

It was a woman's voice, low and rich and honeyed, like warm brandy poured over velvet. It came from inside his own mind, from somewhere deep and dark that he had never known existed.

Blake's hands flew to his ears. "Who's there?"

No answer. But he felt her. A presence coiling through his thoughts like smoke, warm and possessive and patient. She was not a sound. She was a pressure behind his eyes, a flutter in his chest, a warmth between his legs.

"You're beautiful in my dress," the voice whispered, and this time he felt it as much as heard it, a vibration in his bones, a stroke along his spine. "I knew you would be. I knew you'd come."

He stumbled backward, his hip catching the edge of the worktable. Pain flared, but the voice soothed it away with a wave of warmth that spread through the impact like honey dissolving in tea.

"Don't be afraid," she murmured. "I've waited so long for someone to put me on again. To feel the silk against skin. To remember what it's like to be alive."

"I'm not..." Blake's voice cracked. He cleared his throat. "I'm not who you think I am."

"Oh, but you are." The voice was closer now, more intimate. It was inside him, behind his eyes, in the hollow of his throat. "You're exactly who I need. I can feel it. The way your hands trembled when you touched my gown. The way your breath caught when you saw it. You've been waiting for something, haven't you? Something you couldn't name."

Blake shook his head, but the motion made the beads catch the light, and for a moment he saw something in the mirror across the room. A flash of auburn hair. The curve of a breast. The shadow of a woman standing behind him with her hands on his shoulders. Then it was gone, and he was just a man in a dress again.

"I don't understand," he whispered.

"You will." The voice was a promise, a threat, a caress. "You will."

The heat intensified. It focused on his chest, his groin, the delicate skin of his inner thighs. His nipples, normally flat and unremarkable, had tightened into hard peaks that pressed against the silk. The sensation was distracting, arousing, wrong. He could feel each bead against his skin like a tiny point of contact, each seam a line of fire.

He wanted to tear the gown off. He wanted to never take it off again.

"I can give you pleasure like you've never known," the voice said, and images flooded his mind: a woman's body arching under his hands, the taste of salt on skin, the sound of moans in the dark. But the woman in the images was him. The body being touched was his own, transformed, feminine, eager. He saw himself with full breasts and rounded hips and long auburn hair spilling over pale shoulders. He saw himself spread open, waiting.

"No." He said it aloud, but the word was weak.

"Yes." The voice was triumphant. "Yes."

The tingling in his chest became something more. A pressure, a swelling, as if his pectoral muscles were shifting, softening, reshaping. He looked down and saw nothing, but he felt everything. The silk growing tighter across his chest. The weight that was not there but was beginning to be.

His hands moved without his permission. They rose to his chest, palms pressing against the silk, and the touch sent a jolt of pleasure through him that made his knees buckle. He caught himself on the worktable, gasping. The edge of the table pressed into his palms, grounding him, but the pleasure did not stop.

"Feel that," the voice purred. "Feel what you could become."

Blake's fingers traced the outline of his own body through the gown, and he imagined he could feel the curves that were not yet there, the softness that was beginning to bloom under his skin. His touch traveled lower, over his belly, down to where the silk pooled at his hips.

He was hard. Painfully hard. The fabric of his boxers was damp with precome, a dark stain spreading against the pale cotton. The silk of the gown was wet against his erection, and the friction when he moved was maddening.

"Touch yourself," the voice whispered. "I want to feel you."

His hand drifted lower. His fingers brushed against himself through the silk, and the sensation was so intense that he gasped. His hips bucked involuntarily, pressing into his own touch.

"That's it," the voice crooned. "Let me feel you. Let me taste you through the silk."

Blake's fingers curled around his length, squeezing through the layers of fabric. The silk was slick against his skin, and the beads pressed into his palm like tiny stones. He stroked himself once, twice, and the pleasure was blinding. It was too much. It was not enough.

"No." He forced his hand away from his body, pressing his palm flat against the worktable. His knuckles were white. "I don't know what you are, but I won't. I can't."

"You can." The voice was patient, amused. "And you will. But not tonight. You've had enough for one night. Go home. Rest. The gown will be waiting."

Blake's hands moved to the back of the gown, fumbling with the hooks. They seemed tighter than before, harder to reach. He twisted and turned, struggling, and finally managed to free himself. The silk slid from his body like a sigh, pooling at his feet.

He stood in his undershirt and boxers, breathing hard. The voice was silent. The heat was fading.

But the tingling in his chest remained. And when he looked in the mirror, he could have sworn his jaw was softer, his shoulders less broad. The line of his neck seemed longer, more graceful. His skin looked smoother, almost luminous in the dim light.

He dressed quickly, his hands shaking. He folded the gown with more care than it deserved, placed it back in the box, sealed it with fresh tape. He would deliver it tomorrow. He would forget this ever happened.

But even as he thought it, he knew it was a lie.

The gown called to him from the corner of the shop. He could feel it like a presence in the room, a warmth at his back, a whisper at the edge of hearing. And somewhere deep in his mind, the voice laughed.

"Until tomorrow, my darling."

Blake turned off the lights and locked the door behind him. The night air was cool against his flushed skin. He walked to his car, got in, sat behind the wheel without starting the engine.

His hands were still trembling.

And in the quiet of his own mind, he could still feel her. Waiting. Patient. Hungry.

The gown would be waiting when he returned. And he knew, with a certainty that terrified him, that he would not be able to stay away.
