The leather of the chair was cold against her palms. Tanya sat forward, elbows on her knees, unable to keep still. Every nerve in her body felt like it was firing at once. She hadn't slept in three days. Hadn't eaten properly in a week. And now she was here, in her uncle's office, because there was nowhere else left to go.
Dr. Roman Carraway watched her from across the desk. His gray eyes were steady, unreadable. He wore a crisp white button-down with the sleeves rolled to his forearms. His posture was relaxed but alert. He looked like a man who had all the time in the world.
"Start from the beginning," he said. His voice was low and even. It cut through the noise in her head.
Tanya pressed her palms against her thighs. "I don't even know where to start."
"Start with what happened at the restaurant."
She closed her eyes. The memory made her stomach turn. "I was at dinner with friends. My boss was there. Important people. I was supposed to be fine. I'd been fine for weeks. And then suddenly I couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. I started shaking and I couldn't stop. I knocked over my glass. I think I said something. I don't remember. All I remember is running to the bathroom and locking the door and sitting on the floor for an hour."
"What were you feeling?"
"Panic. Shame. I wanted to disappear. I wanted to stop existing because everyone saw me fall apart."
Roman nodded slowly. He picked up a pen and made a note. "And that's when you called me."
"Yes. I called you from the bathroom floor." Her voice cracked. "I didn't know who else to call. Mom would've panicked. My friends don't get it. But you... you've always been the calm one. The one who knows what to do."
"I'm glad you called." He set the pen down and folded his hands on the desk. "But I need to be very clear about what I can and can't offer you. Are you able to listen right now?"
She nodded, gripping her own hands.
"I'm a clinical hypnotist. My practice is based on evidence-based therapeutic techniques. If you come to me as a patient, you come to me for treatment. That means sessions will be recorded. You'll sign consent forms. We'll follow strict professional protocols. I'm your uncle, but in this room I'm your doctor. Do you understand the difference?"
"Yes." She swallowed. "I want that. I need that."
"I need you to say it out loud. What are you asking for?"
Tanya met his eyes. "I'm asking you to help me. I'm asking you to fix me. I don't care how you do it. I just need it to stop."
Roman held her gaze for a long moment. Then he opened a drawer and pulled out a clipboard with several forms attached. He slid them across the desk toward her along with a pen.
"Read every word before you sign. These are standard intake forms. Patient consent, recording authorization, treatment agreement. Take your time."
Tanya took the pen. Her hand was still shaking. She read the first page and signed. The second page. The third. She didn't read as carefully as she should have. The words blurred together. She just wanted to get to the part where he helped her.
"Done." She pushed the clipboard back.
Roman examined the signatures. He nodded once and set the forms aside. "Good. Now I'm going to conduct an intake interview. I'll ask you questions about your history, your symptoms, your current state. I need you to answer as honestly as you can."
"Okay."
He asked about her anxiety first, then her panic attacks. He wanted to know about her sleep patterns and eating habits. He asked about work stress, her relationships, whether she had any history of self-harm. Each question was precise and clinical. She answered them all, even the ones that made her want to curl into a ball.
"Have you ever been hypnotized before?"
"No."
"Do you know what it feels like?"
"I've read about it. I've seen videos. But I don't know what it will feel like for me."
"That's normal." He stood and moved around the desk. He pulled a second chair closer to hers and sat down facing her. Their knees were almost touching. "I'm going to explain what I'm going to do first. Then I'll do it. You'll remain in control at all times. You can open your eyes at any moment. You can speak at any moment. Nothing happens that you don't agree to. Understood?"
"Yes."
"I'm going to use my voice to guide you into a state of deep relaxation. That's all. Just relaxation. I won't ask you to do anything else during this first session. I just want you to experience what it feels like to let go completely. Do you want that?"
She nodded. "Yes. Please."
"Sit back. Get comfortable. Uncross your legs and place your hands on your thighs."
She did. The leather creaked. She settled into the chair and looked at him with wide, expectant eyes.
"Good. Now close your eyes."
She obeyed.
His voice dropped slightly. "I want you to take a deep breath in through your nose. Hold it for a moment. Now let it out slowly through your mouth."
She followed. Her shoulders dropped a fraction of an inch.
"Good. Again. Breathe in. Hold. Breathe out. This time as you exhale, imagine you're letting go of the tension in your shoulders. Let them drop. Let them soften."
She did. She felt the tightness in her neck begin to loosen.
"Focus on the sound of my voice. Let it be the only thing in your mind. Every other thought can drift away like leaves on water. You don't need to hold on to them. You don't need to follow them. Just let them go."
Her breathing deepened. She was already starting to feel heavy. Her limbs were becoming warm.
"I'm going to count backward from ten. With each number, you'll find yourself sinking deeper and deeper into relaxation. By the time I reach one, you'll be in a state of profound calm. You'll still be aware. You'll still be in control. But you'll be deeply relaxed. Do you understand?"
Her lips parted. "Yes."
"Ten. Feeling the weight of your body against the chair. Your legs are heavy. Your arms are heavy. Your head is supported. You can let go now."
She was already far gone. He could see it in the slackness of her jaw, the stillness of her chest. She was responding faster than most patients did after ten minutes of work. They were barely a minute in.
"Nine. Every breath takes you deeper. The air is warm. You feel safe. You feel protected. You can let go of everything here."
Her hands twitched on her thighs. A small sound escaped her throat.
"Eight. You're falling into a soft, warm darkness. There's nothing to fear. Nothing to fight. Just my voice and the darkness and the peace."
Her head tilted slightly. Her breathing was slow and even. She was completely under. He had never seen anyone drop so fast.
"Seven. Sinking deeper now. The warmth is spreading through your chest. Through your belly. Through your hips. You're becoming part of the chair. Part of the stillness."
A flush crept up her neck. Her lips parted further, and her tongue darted out to wet them. Her thighs pressed together almost imperceptibly.
"Six. Deeper. The warmth is pooling now. You can feel it in places you haven't let yourself feel anything in a long time. That's okay. You're safe here. You can feel whatever you need to feel."
Her breath hitched. A soft, involuntary sound rose from her throat. Not distress. Something else entirely. Her fingers curled slightly against her thighs, and her back arched the barest fraction, pressing her chest forward as if reaching for something she couldn't name.
He noted it. Filed it away.
"Five. You're so deep now. So open. Every word I speak is a touch. Every breath you take is a release. You're letting go of everything. Every wall. Every defense. Every knot of tension you've been carrying for months. It's all dissolving."
Her eyelids fluttered. A soft moan came from her throat, louder this time. Her hips shifted in the chair. The flush had spread to her cheeks now, and her breathing had taken on a different rhythm, slower but deeper, each exhale carrying a faint tremor that moved through her whole body. She was aroused. He could see it in the way her thighs pressed together, the way her nipples had hardened against the thin fabric of her blouse, the way her head tipped back to expose the long line of her throat.
"Four. Deeper still. The warmth is between your legs now. You can feel it building. That's okay. You don't need to fight it. You don't need to be embarrassed. This is what happens when you finally let go. When you finally stop holding everything together so tightly. Your body knows what it needs."
She whimpered. Her hips rolled forward subtly, seeking pressure that wasn't there. Her hands slid up her thighs, fingers pressing into the soft flesh, and her mouth fell open. A bead of sweat traced a path down her temple.
"Three. You're so deep. So open. So receptive. Every nerve in your body is awake and alive. The pleasure of letting go is spreading through you. It feels so good to surrender. So good to stop fighting. So good to just... be."
Her chest heaved with a deep, shuddering breath. The peaceful smile that had been forming on her lips was replaced by something more urgent. Her tongue wet her lips again. Her thighs squeezed together rhythmically, involuntarily, and a flush of pink spread down her neck and across the visible swell of her chest above the neckline of her blouse.
"Two. Almost there. You're at the very bottom now. The deepest place. The safest place. Nothing exists except my voice and the warmth and the pleasure of surrender."
A tear slipped from beneath her closed eyelid. Not from sadness. From the overwhelming intensity of release. Her whole body trembled with it, a fine vibration that made the leather of the chair creak softly beneath her.
"One. You're here now. Fully relaxed. Fully present. You can hear me clearly, and you can respond to my voice without coming out of trance. If you understand me, lift the index finger of your right hand."
Her finger lifted. Slow. Deliberate. She was there.
"Good. Now I'm going to install something called a relaxation anchor. This is a tool you can use on your own. I'm going to pair a physical trigger with the state you're in right now. When I touch your shoulder and say the word calm, you'll feel this same deep relaxation wash over you. It'll happen instantly. Do you want this?"
Her finger lifted again.
"I'm going to touch your shoulder now." He reached out and placed his hand on her shoulder. His palm was warm against her bare skin where her blouse had slipped slightly to the side. He applied gentle pressure, feeling the heat radiating from her body. "Calm."
Her breath caught. Her body softened further, melting into the chair. A small sigh escaped her lips, but beneath it was something else, a tremor of pleasure that rippled through her torso. Her shoulder was hot beneath his palm, and he could feel her pulse hammering through the delicate skin above her collarbone.
"Again." He squeezed gently, letting his fingers press into the muscle and curve of her shoulder. "Calm."
This time her entire body seemed to melt. Her head lolled slightly to one side, exposing more of her throat. Her hands opened wider on her thighs, fingers uncurling in a gesture of complete surrender. A soft moan escaped her, breathy and unguarded, and her back arched gently, pressing her shoulder harder into his grip. She was completely receptive. Completely open.
"One more time." He pressed his palm fully against the curve of her shoulder, letting his fingers spread to cover more of her skin. He could feel the warmth of her, the vulnerability, the way her body was responding to his touch as if starved for it. "Calm."
She shuddered. A visible ripple of relaxation traveled through her, starting where his hand touched and spreading downward through her chest, her belly, her hips. Her lips curved into a small, peaceful smile, but her breath was ragged, and her thighs pressed together once more. A flush of warmth colored her skin from her cheeks to the visible swell of her breasts. She looked younger. Softer. Vulnerable in a way that made something tighten in his chest.
He removed his hand slowly, letting his fingertips trail across her skin for just a moment longer than necessary. He sat back. "I'm going to count up from one to three and bring you back to full alertness. When I say three, you'll open your eyes. You'll feel refreshed. Rested. And you'll remember everything that happened here. One. Starting to come back now. Gentle. Easy. Two. Feeling your body again. Your hands and feet, the rhythm of your breath. Three. Open your eyes."
She blinked. The world swam back into focus. She looked at him and a wide, genuine smile spread across her face. "Oh my God."
"How do you feel?"
"I feel..." She laughed. Actually laughed. "I feel good. I feel calm. I haven't felt calm in months."
"That's the anchor working. You can use it anytime you need. Just touch your shoulder and say the word."
She touched her shoulder. "Calm." She took a deep breath. Her eyes went soft for a moment, and a faint flush crept across her cheeks. "It's still working. I can feel it."
Roman watched her. She was radiant. The anxiety that had been written all over her face was gone. She looked like a different person. But there was something else in her eyes now too, something new. A warmth. A need. She was looking at him differently than she had when she walked in.
"I need more," she said suddenly. "Can we do another session tomorrow? Please."
"That's aggressive. Standard protocol is once per week for the first month."
"I don't care about standard protocol. I care about this." She gestured at herself. "I haven't felt this good in years. I need more. Please, Uncle Roman. I'm begging you."
The word uncle in this context was strange. It reminded him of what she was to him. He pushed the thought aside.
"I'll consider it. But you need to rest tonight. Eat something. Sleep."
"Okay. I will. I promise." She stood. She was steadier on her feet. She looked at him with gratitude so pure it almost hurt. "Thank you. Thank you for not turning me away."
"I'm glad you came."
She walked to the door and paused. "Can I... can I use the anchor now? Just to test it?"
"Go ahead."
She touched her shoulder. "Calm." Her eyes went soft and unfocused. She swayed slightly, and her lips parted on a quiet exhale. A delicate flush rose on her cheeks. "Wow. That's amazing."
She left.
Roman sat in his office for a long time after the door closed. He reviewed the recordings in his mind. Her rapid drop. The moans. The way her body had responded to the induction with unmistakable arousal. The way she opened under his touch. The way she looked at him afterward, full of trust and need.
He pulled out her consent forms and read them again. She had signed everything without complaint. She hadn't even read the last page carefully.
He opened his drawer and placed the forms inside. Then he pulled out a notebook and wrote a single line.
Session one complete. Subject shows exceptional susceptibility. Begin protocol.
He closed the notebook and looked at the empty chair where she had sat. He could still feel the warmth of her skin under his palm. Still see the way her body had trembled when he touched her. Still hear the soft, helpless sounds she had made when she finally let go.
Tomorrow, he decided. He would see her tomorrow.
