Initial Session

Josephine Harvey adjusted the collar of her blouse and glanced at the clock on her office wall. The afternoon light filtered through the blinds in thin stripes across her desk, catching on the stack of student papers she had yet to grade. She had not expected the request that landed in her inbox that morning, but here she was, clearing space for a meeting that felt heavier than it should.

Rafael Decker had been one of her sharper students three years ago. Now he was a teaching assistant in the department, and he wanted private tutoring sessions with her. The email had been polite enough on the surface, but the phrasing lingered in her mind. "I think we both know I could use your guidance again, Professor Harvey." She had read it twice before replying with a time.

The knock came exactly on the hour. Josephine straightened her shoulders and called out, "Come in."

Rafael stepped through the door and filled the small office with his presence. He was taller than she remembered, broad through the shoulders, his dark hair slightly tousled as if he had run his hand through it on the way over. His blue eyes met hers directly, and a small smile curved his mouth. "Professor Harvey. Thanks for making time."

"Of course, Rafael. Have a seat." She gestured to the chair across from her desk, keeping her tone measured. "You mentioned wanting to work on your dissertation chapter. What specifically are you struggling with?"

He sat without hesitation, leaning back so the chair creaked under his weight. His gaze drifted over her face for a moment longer than necessary before settling on the papers between them. "The theoretical framework. I keep circling the same arguments. I figured the person who taught me how to dismantle those arguments in the first place might be the best person to help rebuild them."

Josephine felt a small flicker of satisfaction at the compliment, followed immediately by something warmer and less comfortable. She opened her notebook. "We can start with the sources you have. Walk me through your current outline."

As he spoke, she listened for the gaps in his reasoning. His voice carried the same confident cadence it had in her seminar, but now there was an added layer of authority. He was no longer the student raising his hand. He was a colleague who expected her input and intended to use it. When he paused to let her respond, she noticed the way his eyes tracked the movement of her pen across the page.

"Your main claim is solid," she said after a moment. "But you are still treating the secondary sources as obstacles rather than tools. Let me show you how to turn that around."

She leaned forward to point at a line in his notes. The motion brought her closer to him, and she caught the faint scent of his cologne, something clean and understated. Rafael did not move back. Instead he shifted his chair slightly so their knees nearly touched under the desk.

"You always made it look easy," he said quietly. "Standing up there, breaking everything down until the class had no choice but to follow. I wondered back then what it would take to get that kind of focus from you one on one."

Josephine's pen stilled. The words were casual, almost academic, yet they carried an undercurrent that made her pulse quicken. She forced a small laugh. "You were one of the students who did not need extra attention. You always kept up."

"I kept up because I wanted to see how far you would push." His smile returned, slower this time. "Now I am the one asking for the push."

She met his eyes and held them. The power hint was there, subtle but unmistakable. He was not asking for tutoring the way a student asked. He was stating a preference and waiting to see if she would accept the framing. Josephine felt the old professional boundary shift under her feet.

"All right," she said, keeping her voice steady. "We can meet twice a week for the next month. Office hours first, then we will see how the work progresses. I expect you to come prepared with specific questions each time."

Rafael nodded once, as if the agreement had already been decided in his mind. "I will. And Professor Harvey?" He stood, gathering his papers with deliberate care. "I appreciate you taking me on again. I think this arrangement is going to suit us both."

He left the door open when he walked out. Josephine remained at her desk, listening to his footsteps fade down the hall. The room felt warmer than it had ten minutes earlier. She closed her notebook and pressed her fingers to the edge of the desk, steadying herself against the quiet thrill that had begun to unfurl beneath her professional composure.

She told herself it was only academic interest. Nothing more. Yet when she reached for her phone to text Robson that she would be home late, her hand hesitated over the screen. The first session had barely begun, and already the dynamic felt different from anything she had planned.
