The Antique Find

Beth Calder stepped into the retreat gift shop with the kind of purposeful stride that usually carried her through conference rooms and client pitches. The team-building weekend had already dragged on too long, all forced smiles and icebreaker games that made her jaw ache from clenching it. She needed a distraction, something to ground her before the afternoon exercise where she would have to smile at Laura Vicks again.

The shop smelled of cedar and faint lavender, the kind of curated rustic charm that corporate retreats loved. Shelves held overpriced mugs and branded notebooks, but one glass case near the back caught her eye. Inside lay an antique pocket watch, its silver case etched with delicate vines and a faint inscription she could not quite read from a distance. The chain coiled like a sleeping serpent.

She leaned closer. The watch looked heavy, substantial, the kind of object that belonged in a grandfather's vest rather than a gift shop. Something about it tugged at her. Beth had always appreciated precision instruments, and this one felt different from the mass-produced junk around it.

"That one has history," the shopkeeper said, appearing at her elbow with a polite smile. "Found it at an estate sale upstate. Supposedly belonged to a stage hypnotist back in the twenties. Works just fine if you wind it."

Beth's fingers hovered over the glass. "May I see it?"

The man unlocked the case and placed the watch in her palm. The metal was cool, the weight surprising. She thumbed the crown and heard the soft, steady tick begin. Something about the rhythm settled into her chest, matching her pulse for a moment before she pulled her hand away.

"I'll take it," she said before she could second-guess the impulse. The price was absurd, but ambition had always made her decisive. She paid in cash and slipped the watch into her blazer pocket, the chain brushing her wrist like a secret.

Outside, the mountain air was crisp. Beth checked her watch, the real one, and headed toward the main lodge where the team exercise was already assembling. Laura would be there, bright and competitive, ready to outshine everyone as usual. The thought of her rival's smug little smile made Beth's fingers tighten around the pocket watch through the fabric of her jacket.

The exercise was simple on paper: pairs had to navigate a trust-building obstacle course while carrying cups of coffee without spilling. Beth paired with a quiet analyst from accounting and watched Laura take her place across the lawn with another coworker. Laura looked impeccable in a pale blue blouse and slim trousers, her blonde hair catching the sun as she laughed at something her partner said.

Beth's hand slipped into her pocket again. The watch was warm now. She traced the edge of the case with her thumb and felt an odd certainty settle over her. It was ridiculous, of course. Stage props did not grant real power. Still, the idea of testing it, just once, on Laura, sent a small thrill up her spine.

She waited until the pairs began moving. When Laura reached the midpoint of her section, Beth drew the watch halfway out of her pocket, angling the polished surface so it caught a flash of sunlight. She kept her voice low, conversational, as if speaking to herself.

"Laura, your hands feel unsteady. You cannot hold that cup steady no matter how hard you try."

The words left her mouth and seemed to hang in the air for a fraction of a second. Beth felt foolish immediately. She tucked the watch away and focused on her own task, guiding her partner through the next marker.

Then she heard the gasp.

Laura's cup tilted violently. Hot coffee arced through the air and splashed across the front of her blouse and down her trousers in a dark, spreading stain. Laura froze, staring down at herself, cheeks flushing crimson as the entire group turned to look. Her partner reached out to steady her, but the damage was done. Coffee dripped from Laura's fingers onto the grass. A few people laughed, the sound quick and surprised, while others offered napkins and murmured concern.

Beth's breath caught. She watched Laura's face cycle through embarrassment, irritation, and forced laughter as she tried to play it off. The rival who always had the perfect quip now stood there visibly rattled, blotting at her ruined clothes while the exercise leader called for a short break.

A rush of heat flooded Beth's chest, sharp and sweet. Her pulse hammered in her throat. She had not expected anything to happen. The suggestion had been mild, almost playful, yet Laura had reacted exactly as commanded. The power of it, the sudden shift in control, made her fingers tremble around the watch in her pocket.

She forced herself to stay composed, offering a sympathetic smile when Laura glanced her way. Inside, though, the sensation lingered like the aftertaste of good wine. She had done that. She had reached across the lawn with nothing but words and an old watch and made her rival stumble.

The rest of the afternoon passed in a blur. Beth completed her own exercise with mechanical efficiency, her mind replaying the spill again and again. Each time the memory surfaced, the same electric thrill followed. She caught herself touching the watch through her blazer more than once, tracing its outline like a talisman.

When the session finally ended, Beth excused herself early. She walked back to her room along the quiet path lined with pine trees, the late afternoon light slanting through the branches. The key card clicked, the door opened, and she stepped into the cool dimness of her suite.

She did not turn on the lights right away. Instead she sank onto the edge of the bed and pulled the pocket watch from her pocket. The silver caught the last of the daylight from the window. She wound it again, listening to the steady tick fill the silence.

Her mind kept returning to Laura's face, the way the confident expression had cracked, the flush that had spread across her throat. Beth could still hear the laughter, the way it had made something inside her tighten with satisfaction. She had never felt anything quite like it. Revenge had always been a private fantasy, something she indulged in thoughts during long meetings. This was different. This was real, and it had worked.

She lay back against the pillows, the watch resting on her stomach. Her breathing had not quite settled. The rush was fading, but the memory of it lingered, warm and insistent. She wondered what else the watch could do, how much further a suggestion could reach if she layered it carefully. The thought sent another small pulse of heat through her.

Beth closed her eyes and let the scene replay once more. Laura spilling the coffee. The sudden loss of control. The intoxicating certainty that she, Beth Calder, had caused it. She smiled in the growing dark, fingers curling loosely around the chain.

Tomorrow she would test it again. Just a little more. Nothing drastic. The watch ticked on, steady and patient, as if it already knew what she was becoming.
