Hammer and Sparks
Ryan Patterson pulled his truck up to the old Victorian on Maple Street and killed the engine. The house looked like it had been waiting for this kind of attention for decades, paint peeling in long strips, porch sagging under its own weight. Summer break stretched out ahead of him like a blank page, and helping Meredith Cardine fix the place felt like the perfect way to fill it. He grabbed his tool belt from the passenger seat, slung it over his shoulder, and headed up the walkway.
The front door stood open. Dust motes floated in the shaft of sunlight that cut across the foyer. Ryan stepped inside and called out, "Meredith? It's Ryan. Ben said you could use an extra pair of hands."
"Back here in the kitchen," came her voice, warm and steady with that hint of command he remembered from every summer barbecue at the Cardine house. He followed the sound, boots thudding on bare floorboards.
Meredith stood in the middle of what used to be the kitchen, a sledgehammer resting against one hip. She wore a faded gray tank top that clung to her full breasts and left her toned arms bare. The fabric dipped low enough to show the swell of cleavage already dusted with plaster. Below that, cutoff denim shorts hugged her wide hips and ended high on her thighs, revealing smooth skin that looked soft despite the work she clearly put in. Her long auburn hair was pulled back in a ponytail, a few strands stuck to the side of her neck with sweat. She looked every bit the capable contractor and every bit the woman who could make a twenty-two-year-old forget how to speak.
"Hey there, Ry," she said, flashing that confident smile. "Glad you made it. Ben mentioned you'd be free all summer. I could really use the muscle on this demo phase."
Ryan swallowed and set his tool belt on the counter. "Yeah, no problem. Whatever you need. Where do we start?"
She gestured to the wall of old cabinets and the lath-and-plaster behind them. "These have to come down before we can rewire. I've already pulled the appliances. Today we swing hammers and make a mess."
She picked up a second sledgehammer and held it out to him. Their fingers brushed when he took it, her skin warm and callused in a way that surprised him. He felt the contact linger a second too long before she let go.
"Watch how I do it first," Meredith said. She stepped close to the wall, planted her feet, and swung. The hammer connected with a satisfying crack, sending a spray of plaster dust into the air. Her body moved with the motion, hips shifting, breasts shifting under the thin tank. Ryan tried not to stare, but the way the fabric pulled tight across her chest made it difficult. Sweat already glistened along her collarbone.
"See? Angle it like that so you don't bury the head. Your turn."
Ryan stepped up beside her. The space between them felt smaller than it should. He raised the hammer, copied her stance, and swung. The impact jarred up his arms, but the cabinet gave way in a satisfying shower of debris.
"Good," she said. "Now again, but put your shoulder into it more."
She moved behind him to adjust his grip. Her hands settled over his on the handle, guiding the angle. Her chest pressed lightly against his back as she leaned in, the heat of her body seeping through his T-shirt. He caught the scent of her, sawdust and something floral under the sweat. His pulse kicked harder.
"Like that," she murmured near his ear. "Nail it just like I showed you, good boy."
The praise landed somewhere low in his stomach. He swung again, harder this time, and the wall opened up. Plaster dust billowed around them both. Meredith stepped back, coughing a laugh, and brushed at her tank top. The motion pulled the fabric tighter across her breasts, and Ryan's eyes followed before he could stop himself. He noticed the way her nipples pressed against the cotton, the curve of her waist where the shirt rode up, the strong line of her thighs flexing as she shifted her weight.
They worked side by side for the next hour. Every swing brought them closer. Shoulders brushed. Hips bumped when they reached for the same chunk of debris. Once, Meredith leaned across him to point out a stubborn nail, her breast grazing his arm. The contact was brief, accidental, but it left his skin tingling. Heat built in the room, thick with dust and the smell of old wood and new sweat. Ryan's shirt clung to his back. He caught Meredith wiping her forehead with the hem of her tank, flashing a strip of toned stomach.
"You're stronger than you look," she said after a particularly solid hit. "Ben never mentioned you had this kind of stamina."
Ryan wiped his face on his sleeve. "Just trying to keep up with you. This place is a beast."
She laughed, low and throaty. "It is. But I like a project that fights back. Keeps things interesting." Her eyes flicked over him, quick but deliberate. "You're handling the dust better than most. Not afraid to get dirty."
The words hung there a moment. Ryan felt heat rise in his cheeks that had nothing to do with the work. He glanced at her again, the way her ponytail swung when she moved, the way her shorts rode up when she bent to collect fallen plaster. Guilt flickered at the edge of his thoughts. This was Ben's mom. His best friend's mother. He shoved the thought down and focused on the next swing.
They kept going until the wall was mostly gone and the afternoon light slanted long through the empty studs. Meredith set her hammer down and stretched, arms overhead, back arching. Ryan looked away quickly, but not before noticing the way her body moved, full and confident.
"I think that's enough demo for today," she said. "You did good, Ryan. Really good. If you're still up for it, we can pick up tomorrow morning. Same time?"
He nodded, already knowing he would be here. The decision settled into his chest like another swing of the hammer. "Yeah. I'll be here. Wouldn't mind learning more from you."
She smiled, something knowing in the curve of it. "Good. I like an eager student." She wiped her hands on her shorts, leaving faint white streaks on the denim. "Go on home and clean up. You've earned it."
Ryan gathered his tools, the weight of the belt familiar against his hip. As he walked back to his truck, dust still clinging to his skin and the memory of her body brushing his still warm in his mind, he knew the real work had only just begun. The house wasn't the only thing that felt like it was coming apart at the seams.
