First Session
Lana Berlose stood outside the industrial loft, her fingers tightening around the strap of her guitar case as she stared up at the converted warehouse. The address matched the one Darryl had texted her three days ago, but nothing could have prepared her for the sheer size of the place or the way her pulse kicked up at the thought of walking inside. She had spent the last year grinding out solo gigs and bedroom recordings, guarding her independence like it was the only thing keeping her afloat. Now she was about to step into a shared studio with three men whose reputations alone made her mouth go dry.
She pressed the buzzer. The door clicked open almost immediately, and a tall figure filled the frame. Darryl. He was exactly as his photos suggested and somehow more, dark hair falling across his forehead, piercing blue eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her stomach flip. Stubble shadowed his jaw, and his dark button-down clung to broad shoulders that spoke of hours spent hauling gear rather than just sitting behind a console.
“Lana Berlose,” he said, voice low and commanding. “Right on time. Come on in.”
She stepped past him, the faint scent of cedar and something warmer, like clean sweat and late nights, brushing her skin. His hand settled briefly at the small of her back to guide her, the touch light yet deliberate, and a spark raced up her spine. She glanced back, catching the way his gaze lingered on the curve of her waist before he looked away.
“Darryl Hale,” he introduced himself properly once the door closed. “Lead producer on this project. The others are already here. We’ve been setting up the live room.”
She followed him through a wide hallway lined with framed album art and into the heart of the loft. Exposed brick walls met polished concrete floors, and the space opened into a massive open-plan studio. Natural light poured through tall windows, catching on vintage microphones and racks of gleaming equipment.
A lean man with glasses looked up from behind the mixing board. Seth. His short brown hair was neatly combed, warm brown eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled. He wore a fitted henley and dark jeans, practical but somehow effortlessly attractive. He wiped his hands on a cloth and crossed the room.
“Seth Rivera,” he said, extending a hand. His grip was precise, steady, and when their fingers touched she felt a quiet current of awareness. “I handle the tech side. If you need anything adjusted mid-take, just say the word.”
His thumb brushed the inside of her wrist before he released her, so subtle she almost convinced herself she imagined it. Yet the warmth stayed with her as Darryl led her deeper into the space.
A burst of energy announced the third man before she even saw him. Theo strode out from the live room, guitar slung across his muscular torso, tattoos visible beneath the sleeves of his worn black tee. Tousled blond hair fell into green eyes that lit up the moment they landed on her. He grinned, all playful warmth and athletic grace.
“Theo Kane,” he said, pulling her into a quick, friendly hug that still managed to press her curves against the solid wall of his chest. “Drums, bass, whatever you need. Damn, your voice on those demos? I’ve had that hook stuck in my head for days.”
His hand lingered at her elbow as he stepped back, thumb tracing a small circle before dropping away. Lana felt heat rise in her cheeks. Three men, three very different energies, and already the air between them hummed with something electric.
They gathered in the live room. Darryl handed her a microphone while Seth adjusted levels on the board visible through the glass. Theo settled behind the kit, twirling a stick with casual flair. Lana tuned her guitar, aware of the way all three pairs of eyes tracked her movements.
“Let’s start loose,” Darryl said, voice carrying through the monitors. “Play us something you’ve been working on. We’ll jump in when it feels right.”
Lana closed her eyes, found the opening chord, and began to sing. Her voice filled the room, sultry and raw, and within seconds Theo’s drums locked into her rhythm. Seth added a low synth line from the board, and Darryl’s guitar wove through the spaces she left open. The chemistry was instant. Every glance across the room carried weight, every shared beat pulled them closer.
During a breakdown, Darryl’s fingers brushed hers on the fretboard as he leaned in to demonstrate a harmony. The contact sent a jolt straight through her. She looked up, catching the flicker of heat in his blue eyes before he nodded for her to continue. Across the room, Theo caught her gaze and winked, his grin promising more than just music. Seth’s voice came through the headphones, low and approving.
“That was perfect, Lana. The way you held that note, felt like you were singing just for us.”
They played for nearly an hour, the music growing tighter, more intimate with each pass. Lingering touches multiplied. Theo’s hand at her lower back as he adjusted her stance at the mic. Seth’s fingers grazing her shoulder when he passed her water. Darryl’s palm resting on her hip for a brief, grounding moment while they listened back to a take. Every glance lasted a second too long. Every smile carried an undercurrent that made her pulse race.
By the time they wrapped the session, Lana’s skin felt flushed and alive. She set her guitar down, breathing harder than the playing alone warranted.
“Dinner?” Darryl suggested, already moving toward the open kitchen at the far end of the loft. “We ordered Thai. Figured we’d keep it simple tonight.”
Theo whooped and began clearing space at the long wooden table. Seth dimmed the studio lights, leaving only warm lamps glowing over the dining area. They ate family-style, passing containers and trading stories about past sessions and nightmare gigs. Conversation flowed easily, yet beneath it tension simmered.
Lana caught Darryl watching her mouth as she licked sauce from her thumb. Seth’s knee brushed hers under the table and stayed there, solid and warm. Theo reached across to refill her glass, his fingers trailing along her wrist in a way that felt anything but accidental. Every touch was small, deniable, yet they stacked until the air grew thick with possibility.
She laughed at one of Theo’s outrageous tour stories, and the sound drew all three men’s attention like a magnet. In that moment, surrounded by their combined heat and talent, Lana felt the first real crack in the walls she had built around her heart. The music had already bound them. The rest, she suspected, was only a matter of time.
