The Deal Kitchen
The smell of smoked paprika hit Ariana Delgado before she even opened her apartment door. It seeped through the walls, through the floorboards, through every crack in the building like some kind of culinary gas attack. She had been mid-sentence filming a GRWM video, talking about her favorite summer lip tints, and now her entire apartment smelled like a Spanish tapas bar.
She hit pause on her ring light remote and dropped her phone on the kitchen counter.
It was always like this with him. Lucas Herrera, the chef next door, treated their shared wall like it was a suggestion rather than a boundary. His cooking smells invaded her space at all hours. His music played late into the night. His delivery drivers blocked her door with boxes of produce.
And she was done being polite about it.
Ariana yanked open her front door and marched two steps to the left. She knocked hard, three sharp raps that echoed in the hallway.
The door swung open and there he was. Tall, broad shouldered, wearing a white t-shirt that had definitely seen better days. Flour dusted his forearm and a smear of something red stained his collar. His dark hair was messy, like he had been running his hands through it while working. His hazel eyes narrowed when he saw her.
"Delgado." His voice was rough, a little amused. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"
"You know exactly what this is about." She crossed her arms. "It smells like a restaurant in my apartment. Again."
"I run a restaurant, Ari. That's what kitchens smell like."
"This isn't your restaurant. This is a residential building. With other people living in it."
Lucas leaned against his doorframe, crossing his own arms. The movement stretched his shirt across his chest and Ariana absolutely did not notice. She was here to argue, not to appreciate.
"I was testing a new recipe for the weekend special," he said. "Smoked paprika braised short ribs. You'd like them. They're sweet and spicy, kind of like you."
"Don't try to charm your way out of this."
"I'm not charming. I'm stating facts."
Ariana's jaw tightened. This was the problem with Lucas Herrera. He was infuriating and handsome and he knew exactly how to get under her skin. They had been neighbors for two years now, ever since she moved into this building after her channel took off. And for two years they had been locked in this dance. Arguments that felt like foreplay. Competitions that felt like flirting. She hated it. She also didn't hate it.
"Look," she said, forcing her voice to stay even. "I'm trying to work. I have a brand deal deadline tomorrow and I can't film content that smells like your dinner."
"Film in my kitchen then."
The offer hung between them. It was so unexpected that Ariana actually blinked.
"What?"
Lucas shrugged, casual like he hadn't just suggested something completely insane. "My kitchen is bigger. Better lighting. And if you're already smelling my food, you might as well see how it's made. Could be content."
"Content of me cooking with my rival?"
"We're not rivals, Ari. We're neighbors who compete."
"That's the same thing."
"It's not. Rivals hate each other. We just annoy each other."
She should have said no. She should have turned around, gone back to her apartment, and figured out how to edit around the paprika smell. But something in his voice made her pause. That casual offer felt loaded with something else. An opening. A challenge.
"You want to collaborate," she said slowly.
"I want to stop getting complaints about my cooking smells. If that means letting you film in my space, fine."
"And what do you get out of it?"
Lucas's eyes flickered down her body and back up. Quick. Almost too fast to catch. But Ariana caught it. Her skin warmed.
"I get to say I worked with the Ariana Delgado," he said. "Good for my brand."
She laughed. "You don't even have a brand. You have a restaurant with a cult following and an Instagram you barely update."
"Exactly. You could help with that."
The idea started forming in her mind before she could stop it. It was reckless and insane and exactly the kind of strategic move that had built her career from nothing.
"Let me in," she said. "I have an idea."
Lucas raised an eyebrow but stepped aside. His loft was everything she expected and nothing she expected at the same time. Open concept, exposed brick, industrial lighting. A massive kitchen island dominated the center of the space, covered in prep bowls and cutting boards. It smelled like garlic and wine and something caramelizing. Her mouth watered despite herself.
"Nice place," she said, walking toward the kitchen.
"Thanks. I live here."
"Barely. It looks like a showroom."
"It's functional."
"It's cold."
"It's clean. There's a difference."
Ariana turned to face him. He was watching her with that intense focus he always had, like she was a dish he was trying to figure out. She had seen that look before, in the hallway, at the farmers market, during their building's rooftop parties. It made her feel exposed and seen in a way that her followers never managed.
"Here's my idea," she said. "And I want you to hear me out before you say no."
"I'm listening."
"A fake marriage."
The silence stretched. Lucas stared at her. Then he laughed, a real laugh that crinkled the corners of his eyes.
"You're serious."
"Dead serious." She started pacing, her hands moving as she talked. "Think about it. I'm an influencer with a lifestyle brand. You're a chef with a growing restaurant. A romance between us would be gold. Engagement would skyrocket. Brands would fight to work with us."
"People would find out it's fake."
"Not if we do it right. Three months. We move in together, we film content, we play the happy couple. At the end, we stage an amicable breakup or we pivot to a friendship narrative. Either way, we both come out ahead."
Lucas leaned against the counter. His arms crossed again. That was becoming a theme with him, she noticed. He used his body like a shield.
"And what do you get out of it?"
"The sponsorship I've been chasing. A major home and lifestyle brand. They want couples content. They want domestic bliss. I can't give them that alone."
"You want to use me."
"I want to collaborate. There's a difference."
He was quiet for a long moment. Ariana watched his face, trying to read him. He was harder to read than she expected. Most men were easy. They wanted attention, validation, sex. Lucas wanted something else. She couldn't figure out what.
"The boundaries," he said finally. "What are they?"
"Professional. We keep it professional."
"On camera or off camera?"
"Both. We're business partners pretending to be romantic partners. That's all."
Lucas tilted his head. "And the kiss? The proposal? The wedding content? That's all acting?"
"It's content. It's performance."
"And we don't cross any lines."
"We don't cross any lines."
He held her gaze. The air between them felt thick, charged with something she refused to name. Her heart was beating too fast. She told herself it was adrenaline. The thrill of a good business deal.
"One more condition," he said.
"Name it."
"I pick the ring."
Ariana laughed, surprised. "What?"
"If we're doing this, I'm not buying some generic influencer ring. I'm picking something that looks real. Something that tells a story."
"Fine. You pick the ring."
"And we write the terms down."
She looked around for paper. Lucas grabbed a napkin from the counter and a pen from his pocket. He slid them across the island toward her.
"Write it down," he said. "Terms. Duration. Boundaries. Sign it."
"You're serious about this."
"I don't do anything halfway, Ari. If we're faking a marriage, we're doing it right."
She picked up the pen. Her hand was steady. She wrote in her sharp, clear handwriting:
Fake marriage agreement. Three months. Professional boundaries. No real intimacy. Public appearances and content only. End date to be mutually agreed upon.
She signed her name. Lucas took the pen and signed beneath hers.
"Now we're married," he said, his voice dry.
"Not yet. We need the proposal first."
The proposal. The video. The first kiss. Her stomach flipped.
"Tonight," she said. "We film tonight. I'll set up the camera. You do the asking."
"You want me to propose to you on camera."
"I want you to propose to me on camera. Make it romantic. Make it believable."
Lucas studied her for a moment. Then he nodded slowly. "I can do that."
"Good. I'll get my equipment."
She turned to leave but his hand caught her wrist. His fingers were warm, rough from kitchen work. The touch sent a shock through her system.
"Ari."
She looked back.
"When I do this, I'm doing it all the way. You understand that? I don't half-ass anything."
"I know."
"Good."
He let go. She walked out before she could think too hard about the way her skin tingled where he had touched her.
Twenty minutes later, her camera was set up in his living room. She had adjusted the lighting, framed the shot, coached him on where to stand. He looked nervous. She had never seen him nervous before. It was strangely endearing.
"Just act natural," she said. "Like you're really in love with me."
"Acting."
"Exactly."
She pressed record and walked into frame. Lucas was standing by the window, the city lights behind him. He had changed into a clean shirt, dark gray, fitted. He looked good. Too good. She pushed that thought away.
"Hey," she said, smiling for the camera. "So Lucas and I have been talking, and we wanted to share something special with you guys."
Lucas took her hand. His palm was warm, slightly calloused. He pulled her closer.
"Ari," he said, his voice softer than she had ever heard it. "I've been wanting to do this for a while."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a ring. It was simple, a thin gold band with a small diamond. It looked real. It looked like it meant something.
"Ariana Delgado." He dropped to one knee. "Will you marry me?"
The words hit her harder than she expected. For a moment, she forgot the camera. Forgot the deal. Forgot everything except the way he looked at her, like she was the only person in the world.
"Yes," she said. Her voice cracked. "Yes, I'll marry you."
He slid the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly. Then he stood, cupped her face in his hands, and kissed her.
It was supposed to be a peck. A quick, closed-mouth kiss for the camera. But Lucas didn't do anything halfway. His lips pressed against hers, warm and firm. His thumb traced her jawline. She melted into him without meaning to. Her hands found his chest, gripping his shirt, pulling him closer.
The kiss deepened. His tongue traced her bottom lip and she gasped, opening for him. The taste of him was wine and salt and something sweet. She kissed him back like she meant it, like this was real, like she had been waiting for this moment her whole life.
His hands slid from her face into her hair, fingers tangling in the dark waves. He pulled gently, tilting her head back, and the kiss turned hungry. His mouth moved to her neck, lips pressing against the sensitive skin below her ear. She shivered. Her back hit the wall and she hadn't even noticed them moving.
"Lucas," she breathed.
"Tell me to stop," he murmured against her throat. "Tell me this is just content."
She couldn't. The words wouldn't come. His hands were on her waist now, thumbs tracing circles on her hipbones through the thin fabric of her top. Every nerve in her body was on fire. She felt herself arching into him, her body making decisions her brain hadn't approved.
"The camera," she managed.
"Let it record."
His mouth found hers again and this time there was nothing gentle about it. He kissed her like he was starving, like she was the only thing that could satisfy him. His tongue swept into her mouth and she moaned, a sound she barely recognized as her own. Her hands slid up his chest, over his shoulders, into his hair.
He lifted her. Just like that. His hands gripped her thighs and he picked her up, pressing her against the wall. Her legs wrapped around his waist instinctively. She could feel him hard against her, the heat of him through his jeans, and it made her dizzy.
"We said no lines," she whispered, but her hands were already pulling at his shirt.
"You said no lines. I said I don't do anything halfway."
He carried her to the kitchen island, setting her on the edge. The marble was cold against the back of her thighs. His hands pushed under her top, palms flat against her stomach, sliding upward. She sucked in a breath.
"Look at me," he said.
She opened her eyes. His face was inches from hers, his hazel eyes dark with want. He looked at her the way he looked at his best dishes, with focus and intensity and something that might have been reverence.
"I'm going to make you feel so good," he said. "And you're going to let me."
It wasn't a question. She nodded anyway.
He pulled her top over her head and his gaze dropped to her chest. She was wearing a simple black bra, nothing special, but the way he looked at her made her feel like she was wearing lingerie. His thumb traced the edge of the cup, back and forth, until her nipple hardened beneath the fabric.
"Beautiful," he said, almost to himself.
Then he unhooked the bra with one hand. It fell away and he groaned, low in his throat. His mouth found her breast, tongue circling the tightened peak while his hand worked the other. She arched into him, fingers gripping the edge of the counter. The contrast of his hot mouth and the cold marble made her shudder.
His free hand slid down, undoing the button of her jeans. He slipped beneath the waistband, beneath the lace of her underwear, and found her wet. His fingers slid through her slickness and he made a sound of approval.
"So ready," he said against her skin. "All this from one kiss, Ari?"
"Shut up," she gasped, but she was pushing into his hand, chasing the pressure.
He circled her clit with one finger, slow and deliberate. The same precision he used in the kitchen, she thought wildly. The same focus. Then he slid one finger inside her and her thoughts scattered.
"Lucas."
"I know." He added a second finger, curling them, finding the spot that made her see stars. His thumb kept working her clit, steady circles that built the pressure higher and higher. She was shaking. She was going to come apart on his kitchen island with the camera still recording and she didn't care.
"Come for me," he said. "Let me feel it."
She shattered. The orgasm hit her like a wave, crashing through her body, making her clench around his fingers. She cried out, her head falling back, and his mouth found her throat again, kissing and sucking as she rode out the aftershocks.
When she could breathe again, she reached for him. Her hands fumbled with his belt, desperate and clumsy. He helped her, shoving his jeans down just enough. She wrapped her hand around him, thick and hard, and he hissed through his teeth.
"Inside me," she said. "Now."
He pulled her to the edge of the counter, positioned himself, and pushed in slowly. Inch by inch, stretching her, filling her. She dug her nails into his shoulders and whimpered. He paused when he was fully seated, his forehead against hers, both of them breathing hard.
"Look at me," he said again.
She did. His eyes were almost black, the hazel swallowed by desire. He pulled back and thrust in again, setting a rhythm that was slow and deep and devastating. Each stroke hit something inside her that made her toes curl.
"Faster," she demanded.
"Greedy." But he obeyed, his pace quickening. The sound of their bodies meeting filled the loft, obscene and perfect. She could feel another orgasm building, tighter this time, more intense.
"I'm close," she gasped.
"I know. I can feel you squeezing me." He reached between them, his thumb finding her clit again. "Come with me."
He thrust deep one final time and she broke, her whole body clenching around him. He followed seconds later, groaning her name, his hips jerking as he spilled into her.
They stayed like that for a long moment, foreheads touching, breathing ragged. The camera's red light blinked in the corner of her vision. Still recording. Still watching.
"Cut," she whispered.
He laughed, breathless, and pulled back to look at her. His eyes were warm now, satisfied, a little smug.
"That was good," he said, his voice rough. "That was really good."
Ariana nodded. Her heart was pounding. Her lips were swollen. The ring on her finger felt heavy and real. She could still feel him inside her, could feel the ache where he had been.
"Good," she managed. "We can use it."
She didn't know if she meant the footage or something else. She didn't want to examine it too closely.
"I'll edit it tonight," she said. "Post it tomorrow."
"I'll make dinner."
"What?"
"You're my fiancee now. We should eat together. Look convincing."
She should say no. She should go home, edit the video, and put distance between them. But the ring on her finger felt like a promise. The kiss still burned on her lips. Her body still hummed from what they had just done.
"Okay," she said. "Dinner."
Lucas smiled. It was slow and dangerous and it made her stomach flip.
"Good," he said. "I'll make you those short ribs."

Loft Life
The movers had been gone for barely half an hour, and already Ariana wanted to strangle her fake fiancé.
Lucas stood in the middle of their shared loft, arms crossed, surveying the chaos of boxes and furniture like he was judging a crime scene. His kitchen knives were arranged on the counter in a neat row. His spices were already alphabetized. Meanwhile, her carefully curated decor pieces were still wrapped in bubble wrap, waiting for her to figure out where they belonged.
"You're humming," he said.
"I'm not."
"You were. It was that song. The one from the wedding video."
Ariana dropped the throw pillow she'd been holding. "I wasn't humming. And even if I was, why are you listening that closely?"
He shrugged, but the corner of his mouth twitched. "Hard not to when you're right next to me making noise."
"Maybe if you weren't standing there like a drill sergeant, I'd be able to focus." She gestured at the disaster zone around them. "This is supposed to look like two people in love live here, not like a bomb went off at IKEA."
Lucas finally uncrossed his arms and walked toward her. He stopped close enough that she caught the scent of him. Coffee and something warm underneath. She hated that she noticed.
"We've got most of the afternoon before the first content shoot," he said. "Tell me what to do and I'll do it."
She blinked. "What?"
"You're the influencer. I'm the chef. You direct, I execute. That's the deal, right?"
It was such a reasonable response that she didn't know what to do with it. She'd been expecting a fight. Instead, he was standing there, arms loose at his sides, waiting for instructions like an actual partner.
"Right," she said slowly. "Okay. Um. Can you set up the kitchen area? Make it look lived-in but not messy. Like we cook together all the time."
"We do cook together all the time. We own a restaurant."
"Our followers don't know that. As far as they're concerned, I'm just a girl who fell for a chef."
He raised an eyebrow. "And you don't cook?"
"I microwave. There's a difference."
Lucas laughed. It was a real laugh, low and surprised, and it did something to her chest that she immediately ignored.
"Fine," he said. "I'll make it look like you're learning from the best."
"Arrogant much?"
"Confident. There's a difference."
She threw the pillow at him. He caught it one-handed and tucked it under his arm, still grinning, and she realized with a jolt that this was going to be harder than she'd thought. Because when he wasn't being a grumpy rival chef, when he was just standing there looking at her with that half-smile, he was dangerously attractive.
She turned away before he could see the heat rising in her cheeks. "Just make it look good. I'll handle the bedroom."
The bedroom. The single bedroom. With the single bed.
She'd agreed to this arrangement knowing full well they'd be sharing a space, but seeing the actual bed, the one mattress, the one set of pillows, made it real in a way the contract hadn't. They'd discussed sleeping arrangements in the most clinical terms possible. He'd take the couch. She'd take the bed. Simple.
Except the couch was a sleek leather number that looked like it belonged in a museum, not anywhere a human being might actually rest.
She was still staring at it when Lucas came up behind her.
"That couch is not for sleeping on," she said.
"It's Italian."
"I don't care if it was blessed by the Pope. No one is sleeping on that thing."
He was quiet for a moment. Then, "We could share the bed."
She spun around. "What?"
"I'm not suggesting anything. I'm saying it's an option. We're both adults. We can set boundaries."
Her heart was hammering. "Boundaries."
"Yeah. Like a line of pillows down the middle. Or a treaty. Whatever works."
She studied his face, looking for the joke, the angle. But he just looked tired. And sincere. And maybe a little nervous, which was unexpected.
"Let's see how the first night goes," she said. "If the couch is a disaster, we'll figure something out."
He nodded. "Fair enough."
They worked in tandem through the afternoon. She directed, he executed. She arranged throw blankets and artfully placed books. He organized the kitchen with military precision. By the time they were done, the loft looked like a set from a lifestyle magazine. Warm and inviting and completely manufactured.
"Ready?" she asked, holding up her phone.
He wiped his hands on a towel. "As I'll ever be."
The first video was simple. A cooking tutorial. Lucas making pasta from scratch while she watched and asked questions. The premise was cute. Girlfriend learns from chef boyfriend. The execution was something else entirely.
"Okay, so you want to make a well with the flour," he said, his voice dropping into that instructional tone that made her stomach flip. "Then you crack the eggs in the center."
She leaned in, phone braced on a tripod. "Like this?"
"A little wider. You need room to work."
He reached around her, his chest pressing against her back, and guided her hands to shape the flour mound. She forgot the script. The camera faded to background noise. Everything except the heat of him and the way his voice rumbled near her ear.
"Good," he said. "Now crack the eggs."
Her hands were shaking. She picked up an egg and tapped it against the counter. Too hard. Shell fragments scattered into the flour.
"Shit."
Lucas laughed. "First take problems. Keep going."
She tried again. This time the egg slid out perfectly, a golden yolk nestled in the flour well. He nodded, approving, and she felt a ridiculous surge of pride.
"Now whisk," he said. "Slowly. Incorporate the flour from the edges."
She picked up a fork and started mixing. He stayed close, watching, occasionally reaching in to adjust her technique. Every touch sent electricity through her skin. By the time the dough came together, she was breathing too fast and praying the camera didn't pick it up.
"Perfect," he said. "Now we let it rest."
She stepped back, putting distance between them. "Great. Cut. We got it."
He looked at her, and there was something in his eyes that made her pulse stutter. "That was good. Natural."
"It's called acting."
"Was it?"
She didn't answer. She couldn't. Because she wasn't acting, not entirely, and they both knew it.
They filmed two more segments. A wine tasting where they argued playfully about red versus white. A dessert challenge where he fed her chocolate and she licked his finger clean. Each clip was more charged than the last. By the time they wrapped, she was wound so tight she thought she might snap.
"One more," she said, checking her phone. "A fun one. Something messy."
"Messy?"
"Baking. Flour fight. Couple stuff."
He grinned. "You're going to regret this."
"Probably. Set up the cameras."
She positioned her phone on the counter, angled to capture the whole kitchen. Then she grabbed a bag of flour and waited for his signal.
"Ready?" he asked.
"Ready."
He hit record.
"So my girlfriend thinks she can bake," Lucas said, looking at the camera with that cocky grin. "I'm about to prove her wrong."
"Your girlfriend thinks you're about to get flour in your hair," she shot back.
He laughed. "Is that a threat?"
"It's a promise."
She lunged. Flour exploded in a white cloud between them. He coughed, sputtering, and she was laughing so hard she almost missed the look on his face. Pure, unfiltered joy. Like he was actually having fun.
Then he grabbed a handful of flour and threw it at her.
She shrieked as it hit her square in the chest, dusting her black top white. "You're dead."
"Come get me."
She dove for him, but he was faster. He caught her around the waist and spun her, pinning her against the counter. Flour was everywhere, coating them both like powdered sugar.
"Truce," he said, breathless.
"Never."
She grabbed a fistful of his shirt and pulled him closer. The laughter died in her throat. He was so close she could see the flecks of gold in his eyes. The flour dusting his lashes. The way his pupils dilated as he looked at her.
"Ariana."
His voice was rough. A warning. Or a question.
She didn't care which.
She kissed him.
It wasn't like the first time. That had been staged, careful, a peck for the camera. This was desperate. Open-mouthed. She bit his lower lip and he groaned, his hands sliding into her flour-caked hair, pulling her closer until there was no space left between them.
He tasted like salt and flour and something darker. She wanted more.
His hands found her hips, gripping hard, and she gasped against his mouth. He used the opening to deepen the kiss, his tongue sweeping in, claiming her like she was something he'd been starving for.
She was. She was starving for this. For him.
Her hands fisted in his shirt, dragging the fabric up until she felt the heat of his skin. He shuddered and pressed her harder against the counter, his body a wall of muscle and need. She could feel him growing hard against her thigh, and the realization sent a pulse of heat straight between her legs.
"We should stop," he said against her mouth.
"We should."
Neither of them moved.
He kissed her again. Slower this time. Deeper. His hands slid down her back, over her hips, pulling her thighs apart so he could step between them. She felt him, hard and insistent, pressing against her center, and the want that flooded through her was so sharp it almost hurt. She rolled her hips against him, instinctive, seeking, and he made a sound low in his throat that vibrated through her entire body.
"Lucas."
"I know."
His mouth moved to her neck, lips and teeth tracing a line from her jaw to her collarbone. She arched into him, her fingers tangling in his hair, pulling him closer. His tongue found the pulse point below her ear and she moaned, soft and unguarded, the sound swallowed by the empty loft.
He groaned in response, his hands sliding under her shirt, palms hot against her bare skin. He traced the curve of her waist, the dip of her spine, each touch deliberate and exploratory. She was trembling. They both were.
"Tell me to stop," he murmured against her throat. "Tell me and I will."
She pulled back, just far enough to look at him. His lips were swollen. His eyes were dark. He looked wrecked, and she loved it.
"Don't," she whispered. "Don't stop."
He kissed her again, harder this time, his grip tightening on her hips. He lifted her onto the counter, and she wrapped her legs around him, pulling him closer. The hard length of him pressed against her center and she gasped, rocking forward, desperate for friction.
His hand slid up her ribcage, thumb tracing the underside of her breast through her bra. She whimpered into his mouth, and he swallowed the sound, his other hand fisting in the fabric of her shirt.
"Ariana." His voice was wrecked. "If we don't stop now, I won't be able to."
She breathed hard, her forehead pressed against his. Her body was screaming at her to keep going. To pull him closer. To feel him everywhere.
But the camera was still recording. And the contract. And the three months they still had to survive together.
"That was..." he started.
"Don't." She pressed a finger to his lips. "Don't analyze it. Don't label it. Just let it be what it was."
He nodded slowly. Then he licked her finger, and she felt it all the way down to her toes.
"The bed," he said. "Tonight. We're sharing it."
It wasn't a question.
She should have said no. Should have reminded him about boundaries, about the contract, about keeping things professional. But she was still trembling from his touch, still tasting him on her tongue, and the thought of sleeping alone while he suffered on a leather torture device seemed like cruelty.
"With pillows," she said. "A line of pillows down the middle."
He smiled, slow and dangerous. "Whatever you need to tell yourself."
She shoved him, but she was laughing. "Shut up and help me clean this mess."
They spent the rest of the evening scrubbing flour off every surface. The video was a hit. Comments flooded in. "Couple goals." "So in love." "When is the wedding?"
If only they knew.
That night, standing on opposite sides of the bed, they stared at the line of pillows she'd arranged down the center.
"This is ridiculous," Lucas said.
"It's a boundary."
"It's a pillow fort."
"Same thing."
He shook his head and climbed into bed on his side. She did the same, careful not to touch him. The mattress dipped under his weight, and she felt herself sliding toward him. She grabbed the edge of the mattress to stop it.
"Comfortable?" he asked.
"Perfectly."
He laughed, low and warm. "You're a terrible liar."
"And you're annoying."
"Go to sleep, Ari."
She closed her eyes. But she didn't sleep. Not for a long time. She lay there, listening to his breathing, feeling the heat of him through the pillow barrier, and wondering how she was going to survive three months of this.
Because the kiss in the kitchen wasn't part of the plan. It wasn't content. It wasn't acting.
It was real. And real was dangerous.
She heard him shift, felt his hand brush the pillows, and held her breath.
"Ariana."
"What?"
"I'm not going to pretend I don't want you. But I'm also not going to push. When you're ready, you'll let me know."
She opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling. "And if I'm never ready?"
"Then we'll have a very uncomfortable three months."
She laughed despite herself. "You're an ass."
"I know. But I'm an honest ass."
She turned on her side, facing him. The pillows blocked her view, but she could see the outline of his shape in the dark. "Thank you."
"For what?"
"For not pretending. For being honest."
He was quiet for a moment. Then, "You're welcome."
She closed her eyes and let the silence settle around them. The loft was quiet. The city hummed outside. And somewhere in the dark, between the pillows and the pretense, something real was beginning to grow.
She just wasn't sure she was ready to name it yet.
Content Night
The ring light cast a perfect circle of warmth across the kitchen island, where Ariana had arranged two stools and a small table with cards fanned out like a winning hand. She adjusted her phone's camera angle for the third time, checking the frame.
Lucas leaned against the counter, arms crossed, watching her fuss. "You're treating this like a Michelin star inspection."
"I'm treating this like my brand depends on it." She straightened the edge of the tablecloth. "Because it does."
He moved closer, his presence a wall of heat at her back. "What's the game?"
"Newlywed Questions." She turned to face him, close enough to smell the coffee on his breath. "We take turns drawing cards. Answer honestly. Or at least convincingly."
His mouth quirked. "And if the answers aren't what people expect?"
"Then we sell it anyway." She stepped back, putting distance between them. "That's the point. We're convincing."
The camera's red light blinked. Recording.
Ariana settled onto the stool, crossing her legs in a way that made the camera angle work. Lucas sat beside her, close enough that his knee brushed hers. She didn't move away.
"Okay." She picked up the first card, reading it with a bright smile. "What was your first impression of me?"
He tilted his head, considering. "I thought you were loud."
She laughed, a real one that surprised her. "That's not very romantic."
"You asked for honest." His eyes held hers. "I also thought you were beautiful. Annoying, but beautiful."
"Annoying?"
"You leave your shoes in the hallway. You play music too loud in the morning. You let your delivery packages pile up by the door."
She stared at him. "How do you know all that?"
"I lived next door for six months, Ari. I noticed things."
The way he said her name, soft and deliberate, made her stomach flip. She drew another card, reading it quickly to cover the warmth spreading through her chest.
"What's my love language?"
Lucas didn't hesitate. "Words of affirmation. You light up when someone praises your content, your outfit, your cooking. But you don't believe it when they say it. You need to hear it over and over."
She swallowed. That was uncomfortably accurate. "And yours?"
"Physical touch."
The words hung between them, heavy with memory. The flour fight. The way his hands had gripped her hips, pulled her against him. The kiss that had tasted like sugar and desperation.
She drew another card, her fingers trembling slightly. "What's something I'm afraid to tell you?"
The playful energy shifted. Lucas studied her, his gaze too sharp, too knowing.
"You're afraid this is working too well," he said quietly. "You're scared that you're starting to feel something real, and you don't know what to do with it."
The camera was still recording. She should laugh it off, make a joke, redirect. But the words had landed like a punch to her chest.
"That's not fair," she managed.
"You asked for honest."
She looked down at the cards, her vision blurring. "I'm not afraid of that."
"Liar."
The word was soft, almost affectionate. It made her breath catch.
She drew another card, her heart pounding. "What's your favorite part of my body?"
Lucas leaned closer, his voice dropping. "Your hands. The way you move them when you talk. The way they looked covered in flour last night."
Her pulse hammered in her throat. "That's specific."
"I notice things." His hand found her knee under the table, warm and heavy. "Your turn."
She drew a card, her skin tingling where he touched her. "What's something you want to do to me that you haven't yet?"
The question was supposed to be playful, a joke for the audience. But Lucas's eyes darkened, and the air between them thickened.
"Turn off the camera," he said.
"What?"
"Turn it off, Ari."
Her hand moved before she could think, reaching for the phone. The red light died. The silence that followed was louder than any recording.
Lucas stood, pulling her up with him. His hands found her waist, guiding her backward until her hips hit the counter.
"Lucas."
"I've been thinking about this all day." His voice was rough, scraping against her nerves. "Since the flour. Since you laughed and I couldn't breathe."
"People are going to wonder why we stopped recording."
"Let them wonder."
His mouth found her neck, hot and openmouthed. She gasped, her hands flying to his shoulders.
"We said professional," she breathed.
"We said convincing." He bit down gently on her collarbone. "I'm being very convincing."
Her head fell back, exposing more of her throat. His lips trailed down, over the curve of her shoulder, the edge of her tank top strap.
"Lucas, we can't."
"Tell me to stop." His hand slid under her shirt, palm flat against her stomach. "Say the word and I'll stop."
She should. She absolutely should say the word. This was a business arrangement, a three month contract, a sponsorship opportunity rolled into one.
But his hand was moving higher, and her body was leaning into his touch, and the word stuck in her throat like a lie she couldn't swallow.
"I didn't think so."
His fingers found the edge of her bra, tracing the lace. She shivered, her nails digging into his shoulders.
"You're shaking."
"I'm nervous."
"Don't be." His mouth returned to hers, slow and deliberate. "I've got you."
The kiss deepened, and his hand moved lower, slipping past the waistband of her leggings. She gasped against his lips as his fingers found her, already slick and waiting.
"Fuck, Ari."
"Don't talk about it."
"Too late." He pressed a finger inside her, slow and steady. "You're so ready for me."
Her hips bucked against his hand. He groaned into her mouth, his tongue sliding against hers as he added a second finger, stretching her, filling her in a way that made her see stars.
"Look at me."
She forced her eyes open. His face was inches from hers, jaw tight, pupils blown wide.
"I want to watch you come apart."
His thumb found her clit, circling in a rhythm that made her knees buckle. He caught her, arm around her waist, holding her up as he worked her toward the edge. Her inner walls clenched around his fingers, and he cursed under his breath, pressing his forehead against hers.
"You feel incredible. So tight. So wet for me."
"Lucas, please."
"Please what?" He curled his fingers, finding that spot deep inside her. "Tell me what you need."
"More. I need more."
He obliged, increasing the pace, his thumb working her clit in tight, deliberate circles. The pressure built inside her, coiling tighter and tighter with each thrust of his hand. She could hear how wet she was, the obscene sound of his fingers moving inside her, and instead of embarrassment, it only made her burn hotter.
"That's it. Let go."
"I can't. I can't."
"You can." He nipped at her earlobe, his breath hot against her skin. "Come for me, Ari. I want to feel it."
She shattered. The orgasm ripped through her, her body clenching around his fingers as she cried out. Wave after wave of pleasure crashed through her, and he didn't stop, drawing it out, his fingers still moving inside her as she rode the aftershocks. Her thighs trembled, her hands fisted in his shirt, and still he touched her, gentler now, coaxing every last tremor from her body.
When she finally stilled, he pulled his hand away slowly, bringing his fingers to his mouth. He held her gaze as he tasted her, his tongue sliding between his fingers.
"Sweet."
She stared at him, chest heaving, mind blank. "That was..."
"Unprofessional." He smiled, slow and wicked. "I know."
She should feel guilty. She should feel like she'd crossed a line she couldn't uncross. But all she felt was the aftershock of her orgasm and the sharp, hungry look in his eyes.
"We can't do that again."
"Okay."
"Lucas, I'm serious."
He stepped closer, crowding her against the counter. She could feel him now, hard against her hip, and her breath caught at the realization that he was still fully clothed, still holding back.
"So am I. We keep it professional."
"Then why did you..."
"Because I wanted to." His voice dropped. "And because you wanted me to."
She couldn't argue. She had wanted him to. She had wanted it so badly that the wanting had become a physical ache.
"This changes things."
"It doesn't have to." He stepped back, giving her space. "We're still partners. Still a brand. This was just... content."
"Off camera."
"Off camera." He held her gaze. "Unless you want it on."
She didn't answer. She couldn't. Because the truth was, she didn't know what she wanted anymore. The lines were blurred, the contract was meaningless, and the only thing she was sure of was the heat still burning between them.
"I should edit the footage."
"I should prep for tomorrow's service."
They stood in the kitchen, the ring light still glowing, the cards still scattered across the table. Everything had changed. Nothing had changed.
Ariana picked up her phone, her fingers still trembling. "Same time tomorrow?"
"Same time tomorrow." He paused at the doorway, looking back at her. "And Ari?"
"What?"
"Next time, leave the camera on."
He was gone before she could respond, his footsteps echoing down the hallway. She stood alone in the kitchen, the taste of him still on her lips, the memory of his fingers still burning between her legs.
Professional. They were going to keep it professional.
She laughed, the sound hollow and sharp in the empty room.
They were both terrible liars.
Live Stream Slip
The restaurant lights were warm amber and gold, casting a soft glow across the white tablecloth. Ariana smoothed her napkin again, hyperaware of the camera phone Lucas had propped against a wine bottle. They were supposed to be filming a sponsored dinner date for a premium olive oil brand, but something felt different tonight.
"You keep doing that," Lucas said, his voice low enough that the microphone wouldn't catch it.
"Doing what?"
"Fidgeting. You're nervous."
She shot him a practiced smile, the one that usually came easy. "I'm not nervous. I'm perfecting the angle."
"Bullshit." He leaned forward, and the candlelight caught the hazel in his eyes. "You've been different since the game night."
Her breath hitched. The memory of his fingers inside her, the way he'd watched her come undone, was still too fresh. She'd replayed it a dozen times in her head, each time feeling more confused about what it meant.
"I'm fine," she said, reaching for her wine glass. "We should start the live stream. The lighting's perfect right now."
Lucas didn't push. He just nodded and adjusted the phone, his hands steady and sure. She watched him move, the way his shoulders filled out his dark blazer, the way his jaw tightened when he focused. He was beautiful in a way that made her stomach flip, and she hated how much she noticed it.
"Ready when you are," he said.
She took a breath and switched on her influencer smile. "Hey, everyone! We're so excited to be here tonight with a very special sponsor. Lucas and I are testing out the new Terra D'Oro collection, and let me tell you, this pasta is about to change your life."
The comments started flooding in. Hearts, fire emojis, questions about their relationship. She answered them smoothly, keeping up the banter while Lucas played the role of the devoted fake husband. He served her pasta, poured her wine, touched her hand every time the camera angle allowed.
But then something shifted.
He looked at her, really looked at her, and the script fell away. "You're beautiful in this light," he said, his voice rough.
She forgot the camera. Forgot the sponsorship. Forgot everything except the way his thumb traced a slow circle on her wrist. "Yeah?"
"Yeah." His eyes dropped to her mouth. "I've been thinking about that night."
"Lucas, we're live."
"I know."
The comments exploded. She could see them scrolling in her peripheral vision, but she couldn't look away from him. The air between them felt electric, charged with something that had nothing to do with content creation.
"We should probably eat," she whispered.
"Probably."
Neither of them moved.
The moment stretched, dangerous and thrilling, until she finally broke the spell by picking up her fork. The pasta was perfect, rich with garlic and herbs, but she barely tasted it. Every nerve in her body was tuned to him, to the way his knee brushed hers under the table, to the heat in his gaze.
They finished the meal with practiced ease, but the energy had changed. Every laugh was real. Every touch lingered. By the time they said goodbye to the camera and packed up the props, she was trembling.
The Uber ride home was silent, but his hand found hers in the dark. She laced their fingers together and felt his thumb press against her pulse point, counting her racing heart.
"Ari." His voice was strained. "When we get inside, I'm not going to be able to keep my hands off you."
"Good."
The word hung between them, heavy with promise.
The loft felt different when they stumbled through the door. Smaller. Hotter. She barely had time to drop her bag before his hands were on her, pulling her against him, his mouth finding hers in the dark.
The kiss was desperate, nothing like the careful pecks they'd exchanged on camera. This was hungry and raw, his tongue sliding against hers, his fingers tangling in her hair. She moaned into his mouth and felt him shudder.
"Kitchen," she gasped against his lips. "Now."
He walked her backward, his hands never leaving her body. Her back hit the counter, and he lifted her onto it without breaking the kiss. The marble was cool through her dress, a sharp contrast to the heat of his body pressing against her.
"I've wanted this all night," he said, pulling back just enough to look at her. His eyes were dark, pupils blown wide. "Watching you across that table, knowing everyone was watching too. I wanted to take you right there."
"You should have."
He groaned and dropped his mouth to her throat, kissing and biting along the column of her neck. She arched into him, her fingers gripping his shoulders, his hair, anything she could reach. His teeth found the sensitive spot just below her ear, and she whimpered, her hips tilting forward against him.
"Tell me what you want," he murmured against her skin, his breath hot on her neck.
"You. I want you. All of you."
He pulled back and looked at her, his hands stilling on her hips. "Are you sure? Because once we do this, I don't think I can go back to pretending."
The vulnerability in his voice caught her off guard. This wasn't just about sex anymore. It hadn't been for a while. "I'm sure," she said, and she meant it.
Something shifted in his expression. Hunger mixed with something softer, something that made her chest ache. He kissed her again, slower this time, his lips lingering on hers as his hands found the zipper of her dress.
The fabric fell away, pooling around her waist. She was left in a lace bra and the tiny skirt of her dress, exposed and trembling under his gaze. He made a sound low in his throat, almost a growl, and his hands cupped her breasts through the lace, his thumbs brushing over her nipples until they peaked against the thin fabric.
"You're so fucking beautiful." His voice was barely above a whisper, reverent and hungry at once.
She pulled at his jacket, his shirt, needing to feel his skin against hers. They undressed each other in a rush of fabric and breathless laughter, her fingers fumbling with his buttons while he unhooked her bra with a practiced flick. The lace fell away, and the cool air hit her bare breasts, making her gasp before his warm hands covered them, kneading gently, rolling her nipples between his fingers until she was squirming against him.
He shrugged off his shirt, and she finally got her hands on the chest she'd been staring at through his clothes for weeks. The planes of muscle, the smattering of hair, the way his stomach tightened when she traced her nails down it. He groaned when her fingers dipped below his waistband, and she smiled at the power she had over him.
"Not yet," he said, catching her wrist. "I want to taste you first."
He pushed the ruined dress up around her waist and pulled her underwear down her legs, letting it drop somewhere on the kitchen floor. She was completely exposed to him now, sitting on the counter with her legs dangling, and the vulnerability of it made her pulse race.
"Lie back," he said, his voice rough.
She obeyed, letting her shoulders hit the cool marble. The contrast of the cold stone against her heated skin made her shiver. He spread her legs, his hands firm on her thighs, and she watched him look at her with an intensity that made her blush from her chest to her cheeks.
"I've been thinking about this since that night," he said. "About how you tasted. How you came on my fingers."
"Lucas." His name came out breathless, desperate.
He dropped to his knees.
His mouth found her inner thigh first, kissing and biting the sensitive skin there until she was writhing. Then he moved higher, his breath warm against her wetness, and she held her breath waiting for the contact she needed.
When his tongue finally touched her, she cried out, her hands flying to his head. He started slow, tracing long strokes from her entrance to her clit, tasting her, savoring her. Then he found a rhythm, circling her clit with the tip of his tongue before sucking it into his mouth.
"Oh god, Lucas, right there."
He groaned against her, the vibration sending sparks through her body. His hands gripped her thighs tighter, holding her open for him as he devoured her. He slid a finger inside her, then another, curling them upward in a rhythm that matched his mouth.
The dual sensation was too much. She was climbing fast, the pressure building in her core, her thighs shaking against his shoulders. He looked up at her, his mouth still working her clit, his eyes dark and commanding, and that was almost enough to send her over.
"Come for me," he said against her, his voice commanding. "I want to feel you."
She shattered, crying out his name as the orgasm ripped through her. Her walls clenched around his fingers, and he worked her through it, his tongue gentle now as the aftershocks rolled through her body.
He stood slowly, his eyes never leaving hers. She watched him reach for his wallet, pull out a condom, tear it open with his teeth. The motion was practiced and confident, and it made her thighs clench with anticipation.
"My turn," she said, sitting up and taking the condom from his hand. She rolled it down his length slowly, watching his face as she did. He was hard and thick, and she couldn't wait to feel him inside her.
She wrapped her legs around his waist and pulled him toward her. He positioned himself at her entrance and paused, his eyes searching hers.
"Look at me."
She did. Their eyes locked as he pushed inside her, slow and deep. The stretch was perfect, a fullness that made her gasp and arch her back. He filled her completely, and for a moment neither of them moved, just breathing together in the dark kitchen.
"Ari." His voice cracked on her name.
"Move," she whispered. "Please."
He did. His hips found a rhythm, deep and steady, each thrust hitting a spot inside her that made her see white. She wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him deeper, and he groaned, his forehead dropping to hers.
"You feel incredible." His voice was strained, barely controlled.
She couldn't speak. Could only feel. The slide of him inside her, the heat of his skin against hers, the way his breath hitched every time she tightened around him. He leaned down and took her nipple in his mouth, sucking and biting gently, and she cried out, her nails digging into his shoulders.
"Harder," she gasped. "I need more."
He gave her what she wanted. His pace increased, the sound of skin against skin filling the kitchen. He gripped her hips, angling her just right, and the new depth made her gasp. She was climbing again, the pressure building faster this time, coiling tight in her belly.
"I'm close," she said, her voice breaking.
"I know. I can feel you." His hand found her clit, rubbing in tight circles. "Come with me."
The added sensation pushed her over the edge. She came hard, her walls clenching around him, and he followed a second later, his hips stuttering as he buried himself deep and groaned her name like a prayer. She felt him pulsing inside her as the orgasm washed through them both, his arms trembling as he held himself above her.
They stayed like that for a long moment, tangled together on the counter, breathing hard. He pulled out slowly and disposed of the condom, then came back to wrap his arms around her, pulling her off the counter and against his chest.
"We should probably move to a bed," he said, his voice soft.
"Probably."
Neither of them moved.
When they finally made it to the bedroom, he took his time. He laid her down on the soft sheets and kissed every inch of her body, his hands gentle now, his mouth tender. She returned the favor, exploring the planes of his chest, the curve of his back, the hardness of his stomach. They fell asleep tangled together, her head on his chest, his fingers tracing patterns on her spine.
The morning light was cruel and bright. Ariana woke in Lucas's bed, tangled in sheets that smelled like him, her body aching in all the right places. She turned her head and found him watching her, a small smile on his face.
"Good morning."
"Hi." She pulled the sheet up, suddenly shy.
"Don't." He reached out and tugged it down. "Don't hide from me. Not after last night."
She let him look, let him trace the marks on her hips where his hands had gripped her. "Last night was..."
"Real."
The word hit her like a punch. She sat up, her mind racing. "Lucas, we can't. The contract, the sponsorship. If anyone finds out this wasn't part of the deal, we could lose everything."
He sat up too, his expression serious. "What if I don't care about the deal anymore?"
"You should. I should. This is supposed to be professional."
"It stopped being professional the night I had my fingers inside you, Ari. And last night? That wasn't a content shoot. That was us."
She opened her mouth to argue, but her phone buzzed on the nightstand. Notifications flooded in one after another, a relentless stream.
She grabbed it and scrolled, her blood running cold. The live stream clip was everywhere. Their moment at the restaurant, the way he'd looked at her, the comment about wanting her. It had gone viral overnight.
"Oh god."
Lucas took the phone from her hands and read the comments. Instead of looking worried, he smiled. "Look at this. Brands are already reaching out. They love us."
"They love the fake us."
"Is it still fake?" He tilted her chin up, forcing her to meet his eyes. "Because last night felt pretty real to me."
She didn't have an answer. All she had was the memory of his body against hers, the way he'd made her feel seen and wanted and real. She was falling, and she didn't know how to stop.
"We need to talk about this," she said. "Properly. When we're not naked and covered in last night."
He laughed, the sound warm and genuine. "Fine. But I'm holding you to that conversation. And Ari?"
"Yeah?"
"Whatever happens, I'm not going back to pretending either."
She kissed him then, quick and soft, before pulling away. "I need a shower."
"Want company?"
"Not if we want that conversation to happen."
He grinned and let her go, but she could feel his eyes on her as she walked to the bathroom. The door clicked shut behind her, and she leaned against it, pressing a hand to her racing heart.
Everything was different now. The lines were blurred beyond recognition, and she didn't know if she wanted to redraw them or let them disappear completely.
One thing was certain: nothing would ever be the same.
Weekend Getaway
The vineyard stretched before them like something out of a dream. Rolling hills of green vines under a perfect California sun, the air thick with the scent of ripening grapes and warm earth. Ariana stood at the edge of the tasting patio, her sundress fluttering in the breeze, and tried to remember this was work.
It didn't feel like work.
Lucas came up behind her, his hand settling on her lower back with a familiarity that still made her breath catch. Three weeks ago that touch would have been staged. Now it sent a ripple of heat through her entire body.
"Ready to play pretend for the cameras?" he murmured, his voice low enough that only she could hear.
"At this point I'm not sure what's pretend anymore," she admitted, the words slipping out before she could stop them.
His hand tightened on her back. "Good."
The brand representative greeted them with enthusiasm, explaining the weekend's itinerary. A vineyard tour led into a private tasting, which would be followed by a sunset dinner, with the bulk of content creation scheduled for the following day. Ariana nodded along, her influencer smile firmly in place, but her mind kept drifting to the king-sized bed waiting in their suite.
One room. One bed. Two nights.
The contract had specified separate sleeping arrangements for brand trips, but when they'd checked in, the "upgrade" to a single suite had been presented as a romantic surprise. Neither of them had corrected the mistake.
Lucas's arm slid around her waist as they posed for the first photo of the weekend. His body was solid and warm against hers, and she leaned into him without thinking. The photographer directed them to look at each other, to laugh, to kiss her cheek. Each instruction felt less like direction and more like permission.
"You smell like vanilla and sunshine," he said against her ear, his breath warm.
"You taste like coffee and trouble," she shot back, turning to meet his eyes.
The heat there made her knees weak.
They walked the vineyard rows together, the camera crew trailing at a respectful distance. Lucas knew more about wine than she'd expected, his chef's training evident in how he described the soil composition, the growing conditions, the way the sun hit the grapes. She found herself genuinely fascinated, asking questions that had nothing to do with content.
"You really love this," she said, stopping mid-row.
He turned back to look at her, the late afternoon sun catching his eyes. "I love understanding how things grow. How they transform into something beautiful."
"Is that chef talk or are we still talking about wine?"
His smile was slow and dangerous. "Both."
The tasting took place on a wooden platform overlooking the valley. The winemaker poured and explained, but Ariana barely heard the notes of oak and cherry. She was too aware of Lucas beside her, the way his thigh pressed against hers under the table, the way his fingers brushed her knee when he reached for his glass.
"Try this one," he said, offering his glass to her lips.
She parted her mouth, letting him tip the wine past her lips. The taste was rich and dark, but all she could focus on was the way he watched her swallow, his eyes fixed on her throat.
"Good?" His voice was rough.
"Perfect," she breathed.
The sun began to set, painting the vineyard in shades of gold and amber. The camera crew packed up, satisfied with the day's footage. They had an hour before dinner, and Ariana found herself leading Lucas away from the main building, down a path that wound between the vines.
"Where are we going?" he asked, but he didn't slow down.
"I don't know. Somewhere private."
He caught her wrist, pulling her to a stop. They were hidden between rows of grapes, the setting sun casting long shadows around them. The distant sounds of the winery faded to nothing.
"Ari." His voice was strained. "If we go somewhere private, I'm not going to be able to keep my hands off you."
"Then don't."
The words hung between them for a heartbeat before he moved. His mouth crashed into hers, hungry and desperate. She responded in kind, her fingers tangling in his hair, pulling him closer. The kiss was different from before. Less frantic, more deliberate. He took his time, tasting her like she was something precious.
"I've been thinking about this all day," he said against her lips. "All week. Since the first night."
"Me too."
He walked her backward until her back hit the wooden post of the trellis. The vines surrounded them, creating a hidden alcove of green and shadow. His hands found the hem of her sundress, sliding up her thighs with a reverence that made her shiver.
"Tell me what you want," he said, his forehead against hers.
"I want you to make me forget my own name."
His laugh was low and rough. "I can do that."
He knelt in front of her, pushing her dress up to her hips. The cool evening air hit her skin, but his mouth was hot as he pressed kisses up the inside of her thigh. She gripped the trellis behind her, her head falling back as he found the center of her through her underwear.
"Lucas..."
"Patience, baby." His voice was muffled against her. "I want to taste every inch of you."
He pulled her underwear down, slow and deliberate, and then his mouth was on her. Ariana gasped, her hips bucking forward as his tongue found her clit. He was methodical, relentless, learning her body with the same attention he gave a complex recipe. He started with broad strokes, flattening his tongue against her, letting her feel the heat and wetness of him before he focused in. She could feel him smile against her as she moaned, her fingers tightening in his hair.
"God, you're so responsive," he murmured, looking up at her. The sight of him between her legs, his dark eyes locked on hers, sent a fresh wave of desire crashing through her. "I could do this for hours."
"Don't threaten me with a good time."
He laughed, the vibration of it humming against her most sensitive flesh, and returned to his work. His tongue traced slow circles around her clit before dipping lower, tasting her fully. She whimpered, her hips rolling forward of their own accord, seeking more. He gave it to her, his rhythm building with agonizing precision. She was already close, the tension building in her core, but he seemed determined to draw it out. He brought her to the edge and backed off, over and over, until she was trembling and begging.
"Please, Lucas. Please."
"Please what?" He blew gently against her, and she shuddered.
"Please let me come."
He slid two fingers inside her, curling them just right, and his mouth returned to her clit. The combination was too much. She shattered, crying out his name as the orgasm ripped through her in waves. He stayed with her, gentling his touch, guiding her through every pulse and aftershock until she was left boneless against the trellis.
When she finally opened her eyes, he was standing above her, his eyes dark with hunger.
"That," she said, her voice shaky, "was not fair."
"I'm not playing fair anymore."
She pulled him down for a kiss, tasting herself on his lips. Her hands went to his belt, but he caught her wrists.
"Not yet. I want to be inside you when the sun goes down."
He led her deeper into the vineyard, to a small clearing where the last rays of sunlight filtered through the leaves. He spread his jacket on the ground, then laid her down on it, positioning himself over her.
"I want to see you," he said, his voice rough. "All of you."
She let him undress her, piece by piece, his eyes following every inch of exposed skin. When she was bare beneath him, he sat back and just looked at her. The reverence in his gaze made her heart ache.
"You're so beautiful," he said. "I don't think you know how beautiful you are."
"Lucas..."
"I mean it. Every time I look at you, I find something new to love."
The word hung between them, heavy and significant. Love. Neither of them had said it before. She wanted to say it back, but the words caught in her throat.
He didn't push. Instead, he lowered himself over her, his body covering hers, his skin warm and solid. He kissed her slowly, deeply, like they had all the time in the world.
"Ready?" he asked.
"Yes."
He entered her with a slow, steady push, and she gasped at the fullness of it. He waited, letting her adjust, his forehead pressed to hers.
"Look at me," he said.
She opened her eyes. His were dark and intense, full of something she was afraid to name.
"I want to remember this," he said. "Every detail."
He began to move, slow and deep, each thrust hitting a spot that made her see stars. She wrapped her legs around him, pulling him deeper, and he groaned against her neck. The sun continued to set around them, the sky bleeding from gold into rose and violet. She could feel the earth beneath her, the vines rustling around them, and for a moment, she felt completely and utterly whole.
He shifted his weight, changing the angle, and she cried out at the new sensation. His thumb found her clit, circling in time with his thrusts, and she felt the pressure building again, faster this time.
"I'm close," she whispered.
"Come with me."
She did, her body clenching around him as he followed, his groan swallowed by her mouth. They lay there, tangled together, breathing hard, as the first stars appeared overhead.
Later, they made their way back to the suite, dusty and satisfied. Dinner was a blur of good wine and better conversation, their hands finding each other under the table. By the time they made it back to the room, the hunger had returned.
The shower was running before the door fully closed behind them. Ariana pushed Lucas against the tile, the hot water streaming over both of them as she kissed him hard. His hands gripped her hips, lifting her, and she wrapped her legs around his waist. He entered her in one smooth motion, and she gasped against his mouth. The water sluiced over their bodies as he took her against the wall, each thrust deep and urgent. She dug her nails into his shoulders, holding on as the pleasure built. When she came, it was sharp and sudden, her cry echoing off the tile. He followed moments later, his forehead pressed against hers.
They made it to the bed eventually, still damp, still hungry. This time she pushed him onto his back and climbed on top of him. She took her time, lowering herself onto him inch by inch, watching his face as she did. His hands gripped her hips, his fingers digging into her skin as she began to move. She set the pace, slow at first, then faster, grinding against him in a way that made them both gasp. He sat up, pulling her closer, his mouth finding her breasts as she rode him. When she came this time, it rolled through her like a slow wave, and he followed with a groan, burying his face in her neck.
Later, in the deepest hours of the night, she woke to find him pressed against her back, his hardness nudging against her. She reached behind her, guiding him inside her, and he made a sound that was half moan, half prayer. They moved together in the darkness, slow and sleepy, his hand sliding around to cup her breast as he thrust into her from behind. She came with a whimper, and he followed, whispering her name into her hair like a benediction.
In the quiet hours before dawn, they lay facing each other, the sheets tangled around them. Ariana traced the lines of his face with her fingers, memorizing every curve and angle.
"I didn't expect this," she said softly.
"Neither did I."
"I mean it. When I made that deal, I thought I could keep things separate. Professional. But you..."
He caught her hand, pressing a kiss to her palm. "I know. I feel it too."
"This isn't just sex for me."
"I know."
"It's scary," she admitted, her voice barely a whisper. "Feeling this much. I've spent so long building a brand, a persona. What if I lose myself in this?"
He pulled her closer, his arms wrapping around her. "You won't lose yourself. You'll find someone who sees all of you. The real you. And I'll be right there, holding your hand."
She buried her face in his chest, letting his warmth surround her. "I think I'm falling for you, Lucas."
"I know I've already fallen for you."
The words broke something open inside her. She kissed him, soft and sweet, and felt him smile against her lips.
"Say it again," she whispered.
"I love you, Ariana."
"I love you too."
The sun began to rise over the vineyard, painting the room in shades of gold. They made love one more time, slow and tender, with all the words they couldn't say written in every touch. And when it was over, they lay tangled together, watching the new day begin.
Tomorrow there would be more content to film. More brand obligations. More pretending for the cameras. But here, in this room, there was no pretending. There was only them, and the truth they'd finally found.
Viral Vulnerability
The camera's red light blinked at her like an accusation. Ariana stared into the ring light, her smile frozen in place, while the comment counter on her phone climbed higher with each passing second. She was supposed to be filming a sponsored segment for a skincare line, something light and breezy about morning routines and self-care tips. Instead, she sat cross-legged on the bed in her favorite silk robe, hands trembling so badly she had to press them flat against her thighs to steady them.
"You good in there?" Lucas called from the kitchen. The clatter of pots and the smell of garlic drifted through the loft. He was prepping for his own content later, giving her space to work.
"Perfect," she lied, her voice too bright. "Just getting set up."
She hit record. The camera captured her practiced smile, the careful angle of her face, the way she tilted her head to catch the light just right. She launched into her script, talking about hydration and gentle exfoliation, but the words felt hollow, brittle things in her mouth. Her mind kept drifting to the DM she'd gotten that morning, the one from her sister, the one that said Mom's biopsy came back. It's not good.
She blinked hard. Kept smiling. Kept talking.
"And that's why I always double-cleanse," she said, holding up the product. Her hand shook. The bottle wobbled. She set it down too fast, the clatter loud in the quiet room.
The comment counter climbed. People were asking if she was okay. Someone typed she looks sad. Another wrote fake smile alert.
Something cracked inside her chest. The smile wavered, then fell away entirely. She stared at the camera, at the thousands of eyes watching her, and felt the weight of every curated image she'd ever posted pressing down on her lungs.
"I'm sorry," she whispered, and hit stop.
The red light died. Silence filled the loft, broken only by the distant sizzle of something in a pan.
She sat motionless, hands in her lap, breathing shallow. The robe felt too tight. The room felt too small. She wanted to scream or cry or throw the camera against the wall, but she just stayed frozen, because that was what she did. She held still. She waited for the moment to pass.
But it didn't pass. It sat on her chest like a stone.
"Ari?"
She looked up. Lucas stood in the doorway, a kitchen towel slung over his shoulder, his face shifting from casual to concerned in a heartbeat. He crossed the room in three long strides, crouched in front of her, and gently pushed the camera aside.
"Hey," he said, voice low. "Talk to me."
She opened her mouth. Closed it. The words stuck in her throat like glass.
"I can't," she managed. "I can't do this right now."
"Then don't." He took her hands, his palms warm and rough against her cold fingers. "Whatever it is, you don't have to do it alone."
Something broke. A sob tore out of her, raw and ugly, and she crumpled forward into his chest. He caught her without hesitation, wrapping his arms around her, pulling her into his lap as he sat back on the floor. She buried her face in his neck and cried, really cried, the kind of crying she never let anyone see, not even herself.
"My mom," she gasped between sobs. "She has cancer. The biopsy came back this morning. I didn't tell anyone. I didn't want to ruin the brand deal. I didn't want to look weak. I just couldn't..."
"Shh." He held her tighter, one hand cradling the back of her head. "You're not weak. You're the strongest person I know."
"I'm not. I'm terrified."
"That's not weakness. That's being human."
She cried until she had nothing left, until her throat was raw and her eyes were swollen. Lucas didn't let go. He rocked her gently, murmuring soft reassurances, his thumb tracing circles on her back. When she finally pulled back, embarrassed and exposed, he cupped her face in his hands and wiped the tears from her cheeks.
"You don't have to hide from me," he said. "Ever. You understand?"
She nodded, shaky. "I'm sorry. I ruined my filming schedule. I have to post something by tonight, the brand is expecting..."
"Forget the brand. Forget the schedule. What do you need right now?"
She looked at him, at the sincerity in his hazel eyes, at the way he held her like she was precious. "I don't know. I don't know what I need."
"Then let me figure it out." He kissed her forehead, soft and lingering. "Let me take care of you."
Her breath hitched. No one had ever said that to her. Not like this. Not without an agenda.
He stood, lifting her with him, and guided her to the bathroom. He ran a warm bath, adding the lavender salts she kept on the shelf, and helped her out of her robe with a gentleness that made her chest ache. He undressed her slowly, reverently, not with lust but with care, his eyes never leaving hers.
"Get in," he said softly. "I'll be right here."
She sank into the water, letting the heat seep into her bones. He sat on the edge of the tub, his hand resting on the rim, his presence steady and solid. She closed her eyes and let herself feel, really feel, the fear and the grief and the love she'd been holding at arm's length for so long.
When the water cooled, he helped her out, dried her off, and wrapped her in the softest towel he could find. He led her to the bedroom, pulled back the covers, and guided her into bed. She lay there, watching him, as he stripped down to his boxers and climbed in beside her.
"Lucas," she whispered.
"Yeah?"
"I don't want to just lie here. I want to feel something good."
His eyes darkened, but not with hunger. With understanding. "Tell me what you need."
"I need you. Not the camera. Not the show. Just you."
He rolled toward her, propping himself on one elbow. His hand found her cheek, his thumb stroking along her cheekbone. "You have me. You've always had me."
He kissed her, slow and tender, a kiss that asked permission. She answered by opening her mouth, by pulling him closer, by letting all the walls she'd built crumble to dust. His hand traveled down her body, tracing the curve of her waist, the dip of her hip, the soft skin of her thigh. He touched her like she was something sacred.
"Tell me if you want to stop," he murmured against her lips.
"I don't want to stop."
He kissed his way down her throat, her collarbone, the swell of her breasts. He took his time, worshipping every inch of her, his mouth warm and reverent. When he reached her stomach, he paused, pressing a kiss to the soft skin there, looking up at her with eyes full of something she'd never seen from him before.
"You're beautiful," he said. "Inside and out. Don't ever forget that."
Tears pricked her eyes again, but she blinked them back. She reached for him, pulling him up, needing his weight on her, his warmth against her. He settled between her legs, his body covering hers, and kissed her again, deep and searching. She could feel the hard length of him pressing against her thigh, and she shifted her hips, wanting him closer, needing to feel him.
His hand slid between them, his fingers finding her already slick and ready. He groaned against her mouth, the sound vibrating through her chest. "You're so wet," he breathed. "God, Ari."
"Please," she whispered. "I need to feel you."
He reached over to the nightstand, fumbled open the drawer, found a condom. He rolled it on with steady hands while she watched, her breath coming in short, shallow gasps. Then he was back, settling between her thighs, the broad head of him pressing against her entrance.
When he entered her, it was slow. So achingly slow. He pushed in inch by inch, giving her time to adjust, to breathe, to feel every centimeter of him as he filled her. She gasped, arching into him, her fingers digging into his shoulders. The stretch was exquisite, a fullness that made her feel grounded, present, alive.
"Look at me," he whispered.
She opened her eyes. He was right there, his face inches from hers, his forehead pressed to hers.
"I've got you," he said. "I'm not going anywhere."
He moved inside her, a gentle rhythm, a steady pulse. There was no rush, no urgency, no performance. Just two people holding each other, breathing together, finding solace in the quiet intimacy of their bodies. She wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him deeper, and he groaned, burying his face in her neck. She could feel every movement, every thrust, the way he filled her completely and then withdrew, only to sink back in again, each stroke a reassurance, a promise.
"You feel so good," he breathed against her skin. "So perfect. So tight."
She clung to him, her hands in his hair, her heart wide open. The pleasure built slowly, like a tide rising, not crashing but swelling, filling every empty space inside her. She felt his hand slide between them, his fingers finding her clit, circling with gentle pressure that made her gasp and tighten around him.
"That's it," he murmured. "Let go for me. I've got you."
His fingers worked her in time with his thrusts, and the dual sensation pushed her higher, closer to the edge. She could feel herself clenching around him, could feel the tension coiling in her belly, tighter and tighter with each stroke. He shifted his angle slightly, hitting something deep inside her that made her cry out, her nails raking down his back.
"Lucas," she gasped. "I'm close. I'm so close."
"I know," he said, his voice rough. "I can feel you. Come for me, Ari."
She shattered, not with a scream but with a soft, broken cry. The orgasm rippled through her in waves, her inner walls pulsing around him, pulling him deeper. He groaned at the sensation, his rhythm faltering, and then he followed, his body shuddering against hers, his breath hot on her skin as he came. She could feel him throbbing inside her, could feel the warmth of him even through the barrier, and she held him close, wanting to keep this moment, this feeling of being completely and utterly held.
He stayed inside her, holding her, his weight a comfort rather than a burden. She ran her hands down his back, feeling the tension drain from his muscles, feeling the beat of his heart against her chest. Their breathing slowed together, synchronized, and for a long moment they just lay there, wrapped in each other.
They lay tangled together as the afternoon light faded into evening. He pulled out slowly, kissed her forehead, and went to get a warm cloth. He cleaned her with the same tenderness he'd used in the bath, his touch gentle and careful, and then climbed back into bed and pulled her against his chest.
"Thank you," she whispered.
"For what?"
"For seeing me. For not letting me hide."
He pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "I'll always see you, Ari. The real you. And I'm not going anywhere."
She closed her eyes, feeling safe for the first time in longer than she could remember. The fear was still there, the grief, the uncertainty about her mom and her future. But underneath it all, there was something new. Something solid.
She wasn't alone anymore.
And that made all the difference.
Sponsorship Pressure
The comments flooded in before I even finished my morning coffee.
"Ari and Marco would be so hot together 🔥"
"Wait, is she really married to Chef Herrera? Because she has way more chemistry with Marco."
"Team #AriMarco all the way!"
I stared at the tagged post. Marco Villanueva, the rising star of Latin fusion cuisine, had reposted our live stream clip from last week with a wink emoji and the caption: "Now that's what I call chemistry. Maybe I need to find my own kitchen partner 😉"
My thumb hovered over the screen. He was gorgeous. Charismatic. And clearly testing the waters of my supposed marriage.
Lucas appeared behind me, his chest warm against my back as he reached past me for the coffee pot. "What are you staring at?"
"Nothing." I locked my phone and set it face down.
"Ari." His voice carried that edge. The one that meant he wasn't letting it go.
"It's just some influencer stuff. Marco Villanueva reposted our clip."
The kitchen went quiet. I felt the shift in his energy before he spoke.
"The guy who keeps commenting on your posts?"
I turned to face him. "You noticed that?"
"I notice everything when it comes to you." His jaw tightened. "What did he say?"
"Nothing important. Just a wink and some comment about chemistry."
Lucas set down his coffee cup with more force than necessary. "He's trying to stir something up. Right before our sponsorship renewal."
"I know." I bit my lip. "But I can't exactly tell him to back off without looking threatened."
"You're not threatened." His eyes locked onto mine. "You're married."
"Fake married," I corrected, the words leaving my mouth before I could stop them.
Something flickered in his gaze. Hurt? Frustration? It vanished so fast I almost missed it.
"Right." He grabbed his keys. "I've got prep work at the restaurant. We're filming the dinner content tonight."
The door clicked shut behind him.
I sat there for a long moment, the silence pressing in on me. Three months. That was how long we'd agreed to. And now we were nearing the end, and I had no idea what came next.
The afternoon dragged. I tried to focus on editing content, but my mind kept circling back to that conversation. To the way Lucas's eyes had gone hard when I said "fake married."
By the time he came home, I was wound tight.
He walked in with grocery bags, his sleeves rolled up, forearms dusted with flour. He looked good. Too good. And I was still mad at him for leaving, and mad at myself for caring.
"We need to talk about the content tonight," he said, not quite looking at me. "The brand wants something romantic. Candlelit dinner, soft lighting, the works."
"Fine."
"And they want us to address the Marco thing." Now he looked at me. Direct. Challenging. "They think we should do a cute couple's response. Shut it down with humor."
"Or we could just ignore it."
"That's not how this works, Ari. You know that." He stepped closer. "When someone challenges your relationship, you double down. You show them what you've got."
"And what do we have, Lucas?" The question slipped out unfiltered. "Because in two weeks, this contract ends. And then what? We go back to being neighbors who occasionally hooked up?"
His jaw worked. "Is that what you think this is?"
"I don't know what to think anymore."
He set down the groceries. Crossed the space between us. His palms settled on my waist, and the touch sent electricity through my whole body.
"Then let me show you."
The cameras were set up. The dinner was plated. But Lucas ignored all of it.
He pulled me against him, his mouth finding mine in a kiss that was nothing like our carefully staged content. This was raw. Hungry. His tongue swept across my lower lip, and I opened for him, my fingers curling into his shirt.
"We're supposed to be filming," I breathed against his mouth.
"We will." He kissed down my jaw, my throat, his teeth grazing the sensitive spot just below my ear. "But first, I need everyone to know exactly who you belong to."
The possessiveness in his voice should have scared me. Instead, it lit me on fire.
He walked me backward until my hips hit the kitchen island. Then he lifted me onto it, stepping between my thighs. His hands slid up my legs, pushing my dress higher until the fabric bunched around my waist.
"Lucas, the cameras—"
"Are off." He reached behind me and flipped the switch on the main light. The room went dim, lit only by the candles on the table. "I turned them off when I saw you were upset."
"You planned this?"
"I planned to take care of my wife." His fingers hooked into the waistband of my underwear. "The real version. Not the one for content."
I shivered as he pulled them down my legs, the cool air hitting my heated skin. "What about the sponsorship?"
"The sponsorship can wait." He pressed a kiss to my inner thigh, his stubble scraping against the tender skin. "Right now, I need to remind you that you're mine. That Marco, that every other man out there, they don't get to have this."
His mouth found me, and I cried out, my head falling back against the cabinet behind me. His tongue was hot and sure, tracing slow circles around my clit before dipping lower to taste me fully. He held me steady, his grip firm on my thighs as he worked me over with deliberate patience.
"You're so wet for me," he murmured against my slick flesh, his breath hot and teasing. "Is this for them, Ari? Or is this for me?"
"You," I breathed. "Always you."
He groaned and the vibration traveled through my core, making me gasp. His tongue slid inside me, fucking me with slow, deep strokes while his nose pressed against my clit. I gripped the edge of the counter, my knuckles white, my thighs trembling on either side of his head.
"Lucas, I'm close."
"Good." He pulled back just enough to look at me, his mouth glistening with my arousal. "I want to feel you come on my tongue. And then I want to fuck you so hard you forget your own name."
The words undid me. I came with a cry, my body arching off the counter as he drank me in, his tongue working me through every pulse and wave. He didn't stop until I was trembling and oversensitive, my fingers tangled in his hair, pulling him away because I couldn't take any more.
He stood, unbuckling his pants with deliberate slowness. His cock sprang free, hard and thick, the tip already glistening with precum. He stroked himself once, twice, his eyes never leaving mine.
"Turn around," he ordered.
I obeyed, shifting onto my hands and knees on the counter. The position felt vulnerable. Exposed. And incredibly hot. I could feel his gaze on me, raking over my body in the candlelight.
He positioned himself behind me, his hands gripping my hips. "You're so beautiful like this." His voice was rough, strained with want. "Spread open for me. Ready to take everything I give you."
He pushed in, and I moaned at the stretch. He filled me completely, inch by inch until I could feel him deep in my belly, that perfect fullness that made my toes curl.
"This is mine," he growled, thrusting deep. "All of this is mine. Say it."
"It's yours."
"Louder."
"It's yours, Lucas." My voice broke as he drove into me. "I'm yours."
He fucked me with a desperate rhythm, each thrust pushing me closer to the edge. His hand came around to press against my clit, circling in time with his movements. The wet, obscene sound of our bodies meeting filled the kitchen, mixing with my moans and his harsh breathing.
"I don't share," he said, his breath hot against my ear. "Not my kitchen. Not my restaurant. And definitely not my woman."
"There's no one else," I gasped. "There's never been anyone else."
"I know." He kissed my shoulder, his teeth grazing my skin. "But I need you to know it too. I need you to feel it."
He sped up, his grip tightening on my hips hard enough to leave marks. The counter bit into my palms, but I didn't care. All I could focus on was the feeling of him inside me, the way he stretched me, the way he hit that spot deep inside that made me see stars.
"Come for me, Ari." His voice was strained, desperate. "Come on my cock. Let everyone know exactly who makes you feel this good."
I shattered. The orgasm ripped through me, wave after wave of pleasure that left me breathless. My walls clenched around him, pulling him deeper, and Lucas followed moments later, his body shuddering as he spilled inside me with a groan, his forehead pressed against my back, his breath coming in ragged pants against my skin.
We stayed like that for a long moment, breathing hard, connected in the darkness. I could feel him softening inside me, feel the warmth of him leaking down my thighs. His hands gentled on my hips, his thumbs stroking circles on my skin.
Finally, he pulled out and turned me around, cupping my face in his hands.
"That wasn't just for show." His eyes searched mine. "None of this has been for show, Ari. Not for a long time."
"I know." My voice was small. "I'm scared, Lucas. Scared of what happens when this ends."
"It doesn't have to end."
I looked up at him. "What do you mean?"
"The contract ends in two weeks." He brushed a strand of hair from my face. "But that's just paperwork. That's not us."
"What is us?"
He kissed me, soft and slow. "Us is real. Us is me falling in love with my fake wife. Us is wanting to make this permanent. Not for a sponsorship. For us."
Tears pricked at my eyes. "You mean that?"
"I've never meant anything more." He pressed his forehead to mine. "We can figure out the details tomorrow. Right now, I just need you to know that I'm not letting you go. Not for Marco. Not for anyone."
I laughed, the sound wet and broken. "There's no Marco. There's never been a Marco."
"I know." He smiled. "But I'm still going to post a video of us tonight. A real one. To make sure everyone knows exactly where you belong."
"Where's that?"
"Right here." He pressed his palm to my chest, over my heart. "With me."
I kissed him, pouring everything I felt into it. The fear and the hope and the love I'd been too scared to name.
When we finally pulled apart, the candles had burned low and the dinner had gone cold.
Neither of us cared.
Later, curled up in bed, his arms wrapped around me, I finally let myself believe it.
This was real. We were real.
And in two weeks, when the contract ended, we'd still be right here. Together.
No cameras. No content. Just us.
Final Frame
The morning light cut through the loft windows in golden stripes, painting the white sheets amber. Ariana lay still, Lucas's arm heavy across her waist, his breath warm against her shoulder. The contract sat in her nightstand drawer, a ticking clock she'd been ignoring for weeks.
Today it ended.
She turned slowly, careful not to wake him. Lucas looked younger in sleep, the hard edge of his jaw softened, his lips slightly parted. This man had been her rival, her fake husband, her lover. And now she had to decide what he would be when the cameras stopped rolling.
His eyes fluttered open, hazel meeting brown. "You're thinking too loud."
"I'm not thinking at all."
"Liar." He pulled her closer, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "I can hear it. The gears turning."
Ariana laughed softly, but it caught in her throat. "The contract ends today."
Lucas went still against her. "I know."
"We need to talk about it."
"I know that too." He sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. "I was hoping we could just... not."
"That's not how contracts work, chef."
"Fuck the contract."
The words hung in the air between them, heavy and electric. Ariana's heart hammered against her ribs. She sat up, pulling the sheet with her, the cool air raising goosebumps on her skin.
"Lucas, we have to be realistic. This was always going to end."
"Was it?" He sat up too, the sheet falling to his waist. "Because I don't remember signing anything that said I had to stop feeling things."
"You can't just..." She shook her head, frustration building. "We built this whole thing on a lie. Our followers, the sponsorship, all of it. If we come clean, we lose everything."
"Or we don't come clean." He reached for her hand, his fingers rough and warm. "We make it real."
Ariana stared at him. "What?"
"Make it real. Not fake. Not for content. For us." His thumb traced circles on her palm. "I'm in love with you, Ari. I have been for weeks. Maybe from the start."
Tears pricked at her eyes. She blinked them back. "You can't just say that."
"Why not? It's true."
"Because..." She swallowed hard. "Because what if it's just the situation? What if you're confusing the act with real feelings?"
"I'm not confusing anything." His voice was steady, sure. "I know what I feel when I'm cooking with you. When I'm holding you. When I'm inside you. That's not an act."
Ariana's breath caught. She wanted to believe him. God, she wanted to. But the fear was a cold knot in her chest. "My whole brand is built on this image. If I admit it was all fake, I lose credibility. I lose followers. I lose everything I've worked for."
"Then we don't admit it was fake. We say we started as friends and fell in love. Which is the truth."
"That's not the truth and you know it."
"It's close enough." He cupped her face, his thumb brushing her cheek. "The truth is I want you. Not for content. Not for sponsorship. For me. For us."
Ariana leaned into his touch, her eyes closing. "I'm scared."
"I know. Me too."
"You don't seem scared."
"I hide it better." He kissed her forehead, her nose, her lips. "But I'm terrified. Terrified you'll walk out that door and take my heart with you."
She laughed, a wet, broken sound. "That's cheesy."
"I'm a chef. We're dramatic."
She pulled back, looking at him. Really looking. The man who had been her neighbor, her rival, her fake husband. The man who had seen her at her worst, who had held her through her breakdown, who had fucked her like he meant it and then held her like she mattered.
"I love you too," she whispered. "And that terrifies me."
Lucas's smile was slow, warm, genuine. "Then we're terrified together."
She kissed him then, deep and desperate, pouring everything she couldn't say into the press of her lips against his. He pulled her into his lap, the sheet falling away, her bare skin against his.
"Wait," she breathed, pulling back. "The video. We need to film the announcement."
"Now?"
"Before I lose my nerve."
He nodded, understanding. "Let's do it."
They dressed in comfortable clothes, no styling, no makeup. Ariana set up her phone on the tripod, the loft's natural light providing the backdrop. She pressed record and took a breath.
"Hey, everyone. We have something important to tell you."
Lucas slid into frame beside her, his hand finding hers.
"You guys have been following our journey for the past three months," Ariana continued. "And we've shared a lot with you. The cooking, the challenges, the romance. But there's something we haven't been completely honest about."
She paused, her heart racing. Lucas squeezed her hand.
"The truth is, we didn't start this as a real couple." She saw the comments already flooding in, but she kept going. "We were neighbors. Rivals, actually. And we made a deal to pretend to be together for our brands. It was supposed to be three months, and then we'd go our separate ways."
Lucas spoke, his voice steady. "But somewhere along the way, the fake became real. Really real."
Ariana looked at him, tears streaming down her face. "I fell in love with my fake husband. And I'm not pretending anymore."
"Neither am I," Lucas said. "So here's the truth: we're not ending this. We're starting it. For real."
Ariana reached into her pocket and pulled out the folded napkin, the one with the original contract written in her handwriting. She held it up to the camera.
"This was our agreement. Signed on a napkin like idiots." She tore it in half. Then again. And again. "We're done with contracts. We're done with pretending. From now on, it's just us."
Lucas pulled her close, kissing her temple. "Us," he repeated.
Ariana looked at the camera, her eyes red but clear. "We know this might cost us followers. It might cost us the sponsorship. But we'd rather have each other than a perfect image."
"We're not perfect," Lucas added. "But we're real. And that's better."
Ariana reached over and stopped the recording. She let out a shaky breath. "Holy shit. I can't believe I did that."
"You were amazing."
"I was terrified."
"You were brave." He pulled her into his arms. "The bravest person I know."
She buried her face in his chest, her body trembling. "What if it ruins everything?"
"Then we build something new. Together."
She looked up at him, his hazel eyes warm and steady. "You really mean that."
"I really do."
She kissed him, slow and deep, tasting salt and truth. His hands slid down her back, pulling her closer. The phone was still on the tripod, forgotten.
"Take me to bed," she whispered against his lips. "Make love to me. For real."
Lucas lifted her without a word, carrying her to the bedroom they'd shared for three months. He laid her down on the rumpled sheets, his body covering hers, his weight a comfort she'd come to crave.
"I want to remember this," he said, his voice rough. "Every second."
"Then don't rush."
He didn't. He started with her mouth, kissing her slowly, deeply, his tongue sliding against hers in a rhythm that made her toes curl. His hands cradled her face like she was something precious, something worth protecting. When he finally pulled back, they were both breathless.
"You're beautiful," he murmured, tracing the line of her jaw with his thumb. "Do you know that? Not camera-beautiful. Not filter-beautiful. Just... you."
"Lucas..."
"Let me show you."
He undressed her slowly, reverently. First the oversized shirt she'd thrown on for the video, pulling it over her head and dropping it beside the bed. Then the loose shorts, sliding them down her thighs with a gentleness that made her chest ache. He pressed a kiss to her hip bone, then to the soft skin just below her navel. His hands followed where his mouth had been, tracing the curves of her body like he was memorizing her.
Her collarbone. The swell of her breast. The dip of her waist. He took his time, his lips and tongue and hands worshipping every inch of skin as it was revealed. When his mouth finally closed over her nipple, she gasped, her back arching off the bed.
"God, Lucas..."
"I've got you," he whispered against her skin, his breath hot and damp. "Just feel."
His tongue traced circles around her peaked nipple while his hand found the other, rolling and pinching gently until she was squirming beneath him. Then he switched, giving the same attention to the other side, his free hand sliding down her ribs, her stomach, tracing the edge of her panties before slipping beneath the fabric.
Ariana's hips lifted instinctively, seeking more. He chuckled against her breast, the vibration sending sparks through her body. "Impatient?"
"You're going too slow."
"No such thing." He kissed his way down her body, his lips trailing fire across her skin. "Not today. Not for this."
He removed her panties with deliberate care, then settled between her thighs. The first touch of his mouth made her cry out, her fingers tangling in the sheets. He groaned in response, the sound low and hungry, and the vibration of it against her most sensitive flesh sent lightning through her veins.
He licked her slowly, thoroughly, his tongue exploring every fold and crease with the same attention he gave his finest recipes. When he found the spot that made her thighs tremble, he stayed there, varying pressure and speed until she was gasping his name like a prayer.
"Lucas, please. I need..."
"I know what you need." He slid one finger inside her, then another, curling them in a slow rhythm that matched his tongue. She felt herself clench around him, already close, already desperate. "Not yet," he murmured. "I want you to come with me. I want to feel you."
He withdrew his fingers, ignoring her whimper of protest, and kissed his way back up her body. His lips found hers, and she tasted herself on his tongue, salty and sweet. He shed his own clothes quickly, efficiently, and then his bare skin was against hers, chest to chest, hip to hip, the heat of him searing.
"I love you," she breathed against his mouth. "I love you, I love you, I love you."
"I love you too." His voice was rough, broken. "So fucking much."
He entered her slowly, inch by inch, their eyes locked. She felt the stretch of him, the fullness, the rightness of their bodies fitting together. He paused once he was fully inside, his forehead pressed against hers, his breath coming in ragged gasps.
"You okay?" he asked.
"More than okay." She wrapped her legs around his hips, pulling him deeper. "Move. Please."
He did. Slowly at first, a deliberate rhythm that let her feel every inch of him, every pulse and twitch. His hips rolled against hers in a wave-like motion, grinding against her clit with each thrust. She met him movement for movement, their bodies finding a harmony that needed no rehearsal.
He whispered her name like it was sacred, his lips brushing her ear, her neck, her shoulder. His hands found hers, fingers interlacing, pressing them into the mattress on either side of her head. The position made her feel pinned, claimed, cherished.
"Look at me," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "I want to see you."
She opened eyes she hadn't realized she'd closed, meeting his gaze. The intensity there made her breath catch. This wasn't performance. This wasn't content. This was raw and real and terrifying in the best possible way.
He increased his pace, his thrusts deeper, harder, but still measured. Still deliberate. Each one drove a small sound from her throat, a gasp, a moan, a whimper of his name. She felt the tension building in her core, a coil tightening with every stroke.
"I'm close," she gasped.
"I know. I can feel you." He shifted his angle slightly, hitting the spot that made her see stars. "Come for me, Ari. Let go. I've got you."
And she did. She shattered beneath him, her body arching, her cry muffled against his shoulder as waves of pleasure crashed through her. She felt herself clench and pulse around him, drawing him deeper, and he groaned her name like it was the only word he knew.
He followed a moment later, his own release shuddering through him, his arms wrapped tight around her. She felt the warmth of him spilling inside her, the way his body trembled against hers, the way he buried his face in her neck and breathed her name like a benediction.
They lay tangled together, breathing hard, hearts pounding in tandem. Ariana traced patterns on his chest, her mind quiet for the first time in months. The morning light had shifted from gold to white, filling the room with clarity.
"So what happens now?" she asked.
"Now we live." He kissed the top of her head. "We cook. We fight. We make up. We build a life."
"That sounds terrifying."
"It is. But I'd rather be terrified with you than safe with anyone else."
She smiled, pressing closer. "That's cheesy too."
"You love my cheese."
"I love everything about you." She tilted her head up to look at him. "Even your terrible puns."
"Especially my terrible puns."
They laughed, the sound light and free. Ariana felt lighter than she had in years, like a weight she hadn't known she was carrying had finally been lifted.
"What about the sponsorship?" she asked. "If they pull out..."
"Then we figure it out. You're talented, Ari. You don't need a brand deal to be successful."
"Neither do you."
"Exactly." He grinned. "We'll be fine. We've got each other."
She reached over to the nightstand, pulling out the torn pieces of the contract. She let them fall to the floor, scattered like confetti.
"Goodbye, fake marriage."
"Hello, real life."
Ariana snuggled closer, her head on his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart. "I think I'm ready for that."
"Ready for what?"
"Real life. With you. Messy and complicated and terrifying."
Lucas's arms tightened around her. "Good. Because I'm not letting you go."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
She closed her eyes, a smile playing on her lips. The sun was fully up now, filling the loft with warmth and light. Outside, the city hummed with life. Inside, in the tangled sheets of a bed that had seen three months of pretense, two people had found something real.
And that, Ariana thought, was worth more than any sponsorship, any follower count, any perfectly curated image.
It was worth everything.
