Homecoming Clash
Brett Ramsey planted his boots wide in the dust of the Willow Creek fairgrounds, arms folded across his broad chest as the late morning sun baked the back of his neck. The place already hummed with activity. Workers hammered together bleacher sections while ranch hands led horses between temporary pens. As sheriff and former rodeo champion, he had spent the last week obsessing over every detail of security for the annual event. Fences reinforced. Gates locked. Patrol schedules set. He was not about to let anything slip this year.
Yet the moment that battered blue pickup rumbled through the main gate, he felt the shift in the air like an oncoming storm. The truck rolled to a stop near the arena fence, kicking up a cloud of red dirt. The driver door swung open and there she was. Savannah Langford. Savvy. All long legs, tight jeans, and that dark braid swinging down her back like a challenge.
Brett's jaw tightened. He had known she was coming back. The whole town had buzzed with the news for weeks. Career-ending injury. Barrel racing star forced to retire at twenty-eight. But knowing it and seeing her stride across his fairgrounds were two different things. She moved with the same confident posture that had once made her unbeatable on a horse, though he caught the slight hitch in her left knee. The injury. His chest gave an unwelcome tug at that.
She scanned the grounds, those striking green eyes narrowing as they landed on the security posts he had positioned around the equipment sheds. Without hesitation she headed straight for the nearest cluster of workers, her voice carrying clear across the dust.
"This is your idea of secure?" Savvy called out, gesturing at the single chain looped through the gate handles. "One decent pair of bolt cutters and anybody could walk off with half the rigging before the first rider even mounts up."
Brett pushed off the fence post he had been leaning against and started toward her. His pulse kicked up, a mix of irritation and something hotter he refused to name. She had been gone five years. Five years of him keeping this town and its traditions safe without her input. Now she rolled in and started critiquing his setup like she still owned the place.
"Langford," he said, voice low and measured as he closed the distance. "Nice to see you too."
She turned to face him fully. Up close she looked even better than he remembered. Sun had kissed her skin to a warm gold. The fitted black tank top clung to her athletic frame, outlining the firm swell of her breasts and the flat plane of her stomach. Those green eyes flashed with familiar fire as they locked onto his piercing blue ones.
"Sheriff Ramsey," she answered, putting deliberate emphasis on the title. "Or should I still call you Brett? Since we're apparently back to the same old sloppy security that nearly got someone killed back in my racing days."
The workers nearby had gone quiet, pretending to check their tools while clearly listening. Brett felt the public challenge like a spark to dry tinder. He stepped closer, using his height to loom just enough to remind her who ran things now.
"My security setup is exactly what this rodeo needs," he said, keeping his tone commanding and even. "We've got patrols, reinforced locks, and eyes on every entrance. You have been gone a long time, Savvy. Things changed while you were off chasing trophies."
She did not back down. Instead she planted her hands on her hips, drawing his gaze to the curve of her waist and the way her jeans hugged her strong thighs. "Chasing trophies kept this town on the map. And from where I'm standing, your eyes aren't anywhere near that equipment shed. I can see rust on that chain from here. One good yank and it's useless."
Brett's blood heated. Part of him wanted to shake her. Another part, darker and more insistent, wanted to grab that braid, tilt her head back, and kiss the defiance right off her smart mouth. He shoved the thought down hard. He did not need this. Not her. Not the way her scent, something like leather and wildflowers, was already messing with his head.
"You questioning my authority in front of my crew?" he asked, stepping even closer until he could see the faint freckles across her nose. "Because last I checked, I'm the one wearing the badge. You're just a retired racer who decided to come home and stir up dust."
Savvy's cheeks flushed, but her eyes sparked with something that looked a lot like the same unwanted heat he felt low in his gut. "Retired doesn't mean blind, Brett. Or stupid. I still know rodeo. I still know when corners are being cut. And I sure as hell know you. You always did like to think your way was the only way."
The tension crackled between them like live wire. Brett could feel the eyes of half the fairgrounds on them now. His broad shoulders tensed under his sheriff's shirt as he fought the urge to haul her somewhere private and settle this the way his body suddenly demanded. Instead he leaned in, voice dropping so only she could hear.
"You don't get to roll back into my town and tell me how to do my job, darlin'. Not anymore."
Her breath hitched. He saw it. The slight parting of her lips, the way her nipples tightened against the thin fabric of her tank top. Mutual attraction. Undeniable and dangerous. For a second neither of them moved, caught in the pull that had always existed between them but had never been allowed to ignite.
"Well now," a cheerful voice broke in from behind Savvy. "Don't you two look like you never missed a beat."
Lucy Babbage bounced up beside them, her petite frame wrapped in a sunny yellow dress printed with tiny daisies. Savvy's cousin carried a basket of fresh flowers meant for the hospitality tents, but her warm brown eyes danced with matchmaking mischief. She had been trying to push them together since they were teenagers.
"Lucy," Savvy said, tearing her gaze from Brett with visible effort. "I was just pointing out a few improvements to the sheriff's security plan."
"Improvements," Brett repeated flatly. "That's one word for it."
Lucy grinned, completely undeterred. "You two always did strike the best sparks. Remember that summer you both tried to run the same barrel course? Nearly burned the arena down with all that arguing. I always said you'd make a hell of a team if you stopped butting heads long enough to notice each other properly."
"Lucy," Savvy warned, but there was no real heat in it. Brett caught the faint smile tugging at her mouth before she hid it.
He exhaled through his nose, trying to regain control of the situation. Lucy meant well, but her meddling was not helping the ache that had settled low in his belly. The last thing he needed was the whole town thinking there was something brewing between him and Savvy Langford. He had spent years learning to guard his heart after losing his rodeo career and then his father. Partnership was a risk he could not afford.
"If you ladies will excuse me," he started, but Savvy was already moving toward the equipment shed, clearly not finished.
"Just look at this lock, Brett. It's been tampered with. See these marks?" She crouched down, giving him an unavoidable view of her firm ass in those jeans. His cock stirred despite his best efforts. Damn her.
He followed, telling himself it was only to prove her wrong. But when he knelt beside her, the faint scent of cut metal hit him. The lock showed fresh scratches. Too deliberate to be normal wear. A chill cut through the heat she had stirred in him.
"Could be nothing," he muttered, but his instincts were already shifting to alert. "Kids messing around. Or wear from the setup crew."
"Or someone who doesn't want this rodeo to happen," Savvy countered. She looked up at him, green eyes serious now. "You know the old Wilder feud never really died. Dane has been circling this event like a vulture since I got back."
Brett straightened, offering her a hand before he could think better of it. Her palm slid against his, warm and calloused from years of reins and ropes. The contact sent a jolt straight through him. She rose smoothly despite the bad knee, standing close enough that he could see the rapid pulse beating in her throat.
"Dane Wilder is a pain in my ass," Brett admitted, not releasing her hand right away. "But he's not stupid enough to sabotage the rodeo that brings money to every ranch in the county. Including his."
"You sure about that?" Savvy challenged, though her voice had gone slightly husky. She glanced down at their joined hands, then back up at his face. The air between them thickened again. "Because from where I'm standing, it looks like your security could use another set of eyes. Mine."
He should have dropped her hand. Should have told her to stay out of it. Instead Brett found himself staring at her mouth, remembering how it had felt to almost kiss her once, years ago, before she left for the circuit. Before everything changed.
"You want to help?" he asked, voice rough. "Fine. But we do this my way. No public challenges. No questioning me in front of the whole damn town."
Her lips curved into a teasing smile that made his blood run hotter. "Where's the fun in that, Sheriff?"
From the corner of his eye, Brett spotted Dane Wilder leaning against a livestock trailer thirty yards away. The man watched them with a sharp, suspicious smirk, arms crossed over his chest. Dark hair shadowed his eyes, but the resentment was clear even at a distance. Brett filed that look away. Something to follow up on later.
Lucy, never one to miss an opportunity, clapped her hands together. "This is perfect. Savvy can stay at the ranch with you while she gets her new horse settled. Plenty of time to work out all these... details."
"Lucy," Savvy groaned, finally pulling her hand from Brett's. The loss of contact felt colder than it should have.
Brett shot her cousin a warning look, but Lucy just beamed brighter. "What? His place is right next to the fairgrounds. And you did say you needed somewhere to train that new mare before the rodeo. It's practical."
Savvy shook her head, braid sliding over one shoulder. Brett had the sudden, vivid thought of wrapping that braid around his fist while he showed her exactly how practical they could be together. He cleared his throat, forcing the image away.
"I have a bunkhouse," he said grudgingly. "It's empty. If you want it, it's yours. But only because I don't need you distracting my deputies with complaints about my security."
Savvy studied him for a long moment. The public confrontation had drawn a small crowd now. Whispers moved through the workers like wind through tall grass. She seemed to weigh her options, then gave a single nod.
"Fine. But I get to review the full security plan tonight. And if I find any more of these tampered locks, we're doing this my way too."
Brett felt the corner of his mouth twitch despite himself. She was still impossible. Still the only woman who had ever managed to get under his skin this deep, this fast. "We'll see about that, Savvy."
She stepped closer again, lowering her voice so only he could hear. "You know, for a man who claims everything is under control, you look a little rattled. Something about me being back bothering you, Brett?"
Her breath brushed his jaw. He fought the urge to pull her against his chest and show her exactly what she was doing to him. Instead he met her eyes, letting her see the quiet intensity that had once made him a champion.
"Only thing bothering me is how much trouble you always bring with you," he answered. "But if someone is messing with my rodeo, I'll find them. With or without your help."
The hint of sabotage sat heavy between them now. That scratched lock was not normal wear. Someone had been here. Someone who knew exactly which equipment mattered most. Brett's protective instincts surged, mixing with the unwanted desire that pulsed through his veins every time Savvy looked at him.
Lucy had drifted a few steps away to arrange her flowers on a nearby table, but she kept glancing back with obvious satisfaction. Matchmaking wheels clearly turning behind her cheerful smile. Meanwhile Dane had disappeared from his observation post, slipping away between the trailers like he had seen enough.
Brett did not like it. Any of it. Not the tampering. Not the way Savvy's return had already complicated his carefully ordered world. And especially not the way his body responded to her like she was the only woman on earth who could match his intensity.
"Come on," he said, nodding toward the main security trailer. "We'll go over the plans. But keep your voice down this time. I don't need the whole county knowing the retired barrel racer thinks she can do my job better than me."
Savvy fell into step beside him, close enough that their arms nearly brushed. "Retired barrel racer who still rides better than most of your deputies, you mean."
He snorted. "There she is. Mouthy as ever."
"You used to like my mouth," she shot back, then seemed to realize how that sounded. Color touched her cheeks again.
Brett stopped walking. Turned to face her fully. The fairgrounds noise faded into the background as he looked down at her, letting the tension stretch tight between them once more. "Careful, Savvy. You start reminding me what I used to like, I might decide to find out if it's still true."
Her green eyes widened slightly, but she did not look away. The attraction that had ignited during their argument now burned hotter, more deliberate. He watched her throat work as she swallowed.
"Maybe I want you to," she said quietly. Then she kept walking, leaving him to follow with his blood pounding and his control hanging by a thread.
Brett Ramsey watched the sway of her hips and knew one thing for certain. This homecoming was going to test every ounce of his guarded heart. And if that tampered lock was any indication, the real danger had only just begun.
As they reached the trailer, Lucy called after them in her bubbly voice. "Dinner at my place tomorrow night, you two. Don't even think about arguing about it. The town needs this rodeo to bring everyone together. Including you."
Savvy glanced back at Brett with a challenging little smile that made his cock twitch against his zipper. He muttered a curse under his breath and opened the trailer door for her, already wondering how the hell he was going to survive having Savannah Langford back in his life.
Because the sparks between them had never died. They had only been waiting for her return to set the whole damn town on fire.
