Arrival at the Gate
The wall rose from the dust like a tombstone marking the edge of the world.
Kara Brent staggered toward it, each step a negotiation with her failing body. Three days without water. Five since she'd eaten anything more than dried roots and a handful of shriveled berries. Her boots had worn through two weeks ago, and the rags wrapped around her feet did little against the broken asphalt and razor-sharp gravel of the wastes.
She'd survived the collapse. The fever that killed half of her research team had swept through their camp like wildfire, and she'd nursed the survivors until the raiders came. They took everything she had left and dumped her body in a drainage ditch, assuming she'd bleed out by morning.
But she wasn't sure she could survive one more night out here.
The gate loomed ahead, a massive construction of welded scrap metal and concrete slabs. Watchtowers flanked it, their shadows stretching across the barren ground like skeletal fingers. People moved along the catwalks above, carrying weapons with the casual ease of those who had authority to use them.
Kara forced her shoulders back. Forced her chin up. She'd been a doctor once. A researcher. Someone people respected. She couldn't walk in here looking like prey.
But she knew exactly what she looked like. Dark hair hung in greasy tangles around her face. Green eyes, once sharp and analytical, now held the hollow desperation of an animal at the end of its rope. The scars on her arms and hands told stories of violence and narrow escapes. Her clothes, once practical field gear, were now torn and filthy, revealing more skin than she wanted to show.
She kept walking.
"Hold it right there."
The voice came from above, amplified by a speaker system that crackled with static. Kara stopped. She raised her hands slowly, palms open, showing she wasn't holding anything.
"I'm alone," she called out. "No weapons. No infection. I just need shelter."
"Everyone needs shelter. What do you bring?"
"Medical knowledge. I was a researcher. Doctorate in epidemiology. I can work. I can earn my keep."
Silence. Then the grinding of metal hinges as a small door within the larger gate swung open. A man stepped out, rifle cradled in his arms. He was tall, muscular, with a shaved head and cold blue eyes that scanned her like she was a piece of meat on a slab.
Behind him, another guard emerged. Younger, stockier, with tattoos crawling up his thick neck and crude amusement written across his face.
The first man stopped a few feet from her. "Name."
"Kara Brent."
"Where from?"
"The old research station. North of here. It fell three months ago."
"Three months alone in the wastes?" His eyes narrowed. "That's a long time for a woman to survive by herself."
"I'm resourceful."
"Resourceful." He said the word like it was a joke. "Strip."
Kara's blood went cold. "What?"
"You heard me. Strip. We don't let contaminated people through the gate. You want entry, you get inspected. Every inch."
"I told you, I'm not infected. I've been alone for weeks. There's no one I could have caught anything from."
"Rules are rules. You strip, we check you, you get processed. Or you can turn around and walk back into the wastes. Your choice."
She looked past him, through the gap in the gate. Real buildings with roofs and walls and working lights stood inside. People walked around with purpose instead of hunching in fear. Gardens grew in organized rows. Water pumps stood at regular intervals.
Life.
She looked back at the wastes. Empty. Endless. Deadly.
Her hands moved to the ties on her shirt.
"Smart woman," the tattooed guard said, grinning. "I like smart women."
She didn't respond. She pulled the shirt over her head, wincing as the fabric pulled at the half-healed wounds on her ribs. She dropped it to the ground. Then her pants followed, and finally the thin, torn underthings that barely qualified as clothing anymore.
She stood naked in front of them, arms at her sides, staring at a point on the wall just past the shaved-headed guard's shoulder. The wind bit into her skin, raising goosebumps across her arms and thighs. She could feel their eyes on her, moving over her body like they were cataloging every flaw, every mark, every inch of exposed flesh.
The tattooed guard let out a low whistle. His gaze crawled down her body, lingering on her breasts, the curve of her hips, the junction of her thighs. "Shame about the scars," he said. "But the rest of her? Damn."
The older guard said nothing. His expression remained flat, clinical. But his eyes told a different story. They traced the same path his companion's had, slower, more deliberate. Taking their time.
"Turn around," the first guard said.
She turned. Faced the wastes she'd just come from. Felt their gazes settle on her back, the swell of her ass, the backs of her thighs. The younger guard made a sound of appreciation that made her skin crawl.
"Bend over. Hands on your knees."
Her jaw clenched. Her whole body went rigid with refusal. She was a doctor. A scientist. She had given presentations at international conferences. She had published papers. She had saved lives.
And now she was bending over in the dust, naked, while armed men inspected her like livestock.
"Do it or leave," the guard said. No emotion in his voice. Just flat authority.
She bent over.
The humiliation burned through her like acid. Her hands pressed against her knees, knuckles white. She felt the rough calloused fingers on her skin first, running down the length of her spine, tracing the ridges of old wounds. They cupped her ass, squeezed, spread her open. The wind hit places that hadn't felt air in weeks, and she couldn't suppress the shiver that ran through her.
"Nice," the younger guard murmured. "Real nice."
The older one worked in silence, methodical and cold. His fingers probed the crease of her thighs, checked behind her ears, examined her scalp with clinical detachment. But his hands kept returning to more intimate territory. The soft skin of her inner thighs. The curve where ass met thigh. The cleft between her cheeks.
"Open your mouth."
She did. He checked her teeth like she was a horse at auction, running his fingers along her gums, pressing her tongue down. Then her ears. Between her fingers and toes.
"Lie down on your back. Arms above your head."
She did that too. The gravel bit into her spine, her shoulders, the backs of her thighs. The sky stretched above her, pale and empty. The tattooed guard stood over her, looking down with undisguised hunger. His hand adjusted the front of his pants. The other guard knelt beside her.
"This is going to be thorough," he said. "If you resist, you're out. If you attack me, you're dead. Understood?"
"Understood."
His fingers found her breasts first. Not rough, not gentle. Professional. He pressed and squeezed, checking for abnormalities, working his way across each breast in slow, methodical circles. But his hands lingered longer than any medical examination required. They traced the curves, the contours, the soft underside of each breast where the skin was sensitive. He found her nipples and rolled them between his fingers, watching her face for a reaction.
She gave him nothing. Stared at the sky. Counted the clouds.
But her body betrayed her. The cool air, the friction of his calloused fingers, the prolonged manipulation. Her nipples hardened under his touch, puckering into tight peaks despite her determination to feel nothing. The older guard noticed. Of course he noticed. He pinched one nipple, pulled it gently, watched it stretch and then release. Did the same to the other. A soft sound escaped her throat before she could stop it.
"Responsive," he said. Not a question. An observation. A note for later.
The younger guard shifted his weight. "Can I?"
"Not yet."
His hands moved lower. Across her stomach, her hips, the inside of her thighs. He spread her legs wider, pushing her knees apart. The gravel scraped against her calves. She felt completely exposed. Open. Every part of her visible and accessible.
He traced the crease where her thigh met her body, the sensitive skin that made her muscles jump involuntarily. His fingers brushed through the patch of dark hair between her legs, tugging slightly, assessing. Then lower. He parted her outer lips with his thumbs, spreading her open to the pale light.
"Last part," he said. "Internal check. If you've got anything hidden inside you, this will find it."
She knew what was coming. She'd known since he told her to strip. But knowing didn't prepare her for the reality of it. The violation. The way her body tensed, the way her muscles tried to close themselves off.
His fingers pressed inside her. Two of them. Thick and unyielding. She gasped despite herself, her back arching slightly off the gravel. Her hips tried to shift away, but his other hand clamped down on her thigh, holding her still.
"Easy," he said. "Don't make this harder than it needs to be."
She focused on the sky. On counting the clouds. On calculating how many steps it would take to reach the buildings she'd glimpsed through the gate. How many days she'd need to recover her strength.
His fingers moved inside her, exploring, stretching. Slow, deliberate strokes that pressed against her walls, checking every inch. She felt the heat of shame spread across her face, across her chest. And she felt something else. Something worse.
Wetness.
Her body's involuntary response to prolonged stimulation. The blood rushing to her core, the slickness that her tissues produced when touched. She hated that wetness. Hated the way his fingers slid easier now, the obscene sounds her body made as he worked. Hated the way her inner walls clenched around his fingers, gripping him, responding to the intrusion with something that wasn't quite resistance.
"She's wet," the younger guard said. His voice had dropped. Rougher now. Hungrier.
"It's a physiological response," the older guard said. "Doesn't mean anything."
But his fingers changed their angle. Found something. Pressed against a spot inside her that sent a jolt through her whole body. Her hips jerked before she could stop them. Her breath caught.
"There it is," he said. Quiet. Satisfied.
He stroked that spot. Slow circles. Firm pressure. And her body responded whether she wanted it to or not. Her thighs tensed. Her stomach tightened. Heat pooled in her belly and spread outward. She could feel herself getting wetter, feel her body opening to his touch, feel the shameful flush spreading down her neck and across her chest.
She tried to think of something else. Anything else. The wastes. The fever. The raiders. But her mind kept returning to his fingers inside her, to the steady rhythm he was building, to the way her hips wanted to move. Wanted to meet his hand. Wanted something other than this cold, clinical violation.
Her nipples were hard, aching. Her clit throbbed with every heartbeat. She could feel it swelling, emerging from its hood, demanding attention he hadn't given it yet. Her body was betraying her completely, responding to stimulation she hadn't asked for, producing arousal she didn't want.
He pressed deeper. A third finger joined the first two, stretching her open. She whimpered. The sound was small and broken, and she hated herself for making it. His thumb found her clit. Pressed. Circled.
"Stop," she whispered.
"Almost done," he said. But his fingers kept moving. In and out. Slow, deliberate thrusts that made her body sing despite her determination to feel nothing.
The younger guard was breathing hard now. He'd unbuttoned his pants, freed himself. His hand moved in time with the older guard's thrusts, stroking himself as he watched.
She was close. Her body was building toward something she didn't want, couldn't want, and she couldn't stop it. The tension coiled in her belly, tighter and tighter. Her inner walls squeezed his fingers. Her thighs trembled. Her breath came in short, sharp gasps.
Then he pulled out.
The withdrawal was sudden and complete. His fingers left her empty, clenching around nothing. The tension in her body had nowhere to go. She lay there, shaking, her hips still raised slightly, her body still waiting for the release that wasn't coming.
"There," he said. "All clean."
She saw his fingers glisten in the pale light before he wiped them on his pants. Her arousal coated them, obvious and damning. The younger guard was staring at her with open hunger, his hand still wrapped around himself.
"She's clean," the older guard said. "Get her processed."
Kara pushed herself up. Her hands were shaking. Her thighs were wet. Her whole body hummed with denied release, and she wanted to scream.
She reached for her clothes.
"Leave them," the older guard said. "You won't need them where you're going."
She stared at him. "What does that mean?"
"It means the settlement provides. Clothing. Food. Shelter. Everything you need to survive." His cold blue eyes met hers. "Everything you need to serve."
"Serve?"
"You're not a guest here, Dr. Brent. You're a resource. Same as everyone who comes through that gate. You'll work. You'll earn your keep. And part of that keep is making yourself available to the guards who protect this place."
The words hit her like a physical blow. "Available?"
"Sexual service is mandatory for all new arrivals. Six-month rotation. After that, you can petition for reassignment or choose to stay on. But for the first six months, you belong to the guard rotation. Whenever you're called, you report. Whenever you're needed, you perform."
"No."
The word came out before she could stop it. The older guard's eyes narrowed. The younger one's grin faded into something harder.
"I'm sorry?" the older guard said.
"I said no. I'm a doctor. I have medical training. I can work in your clinic, your hospital, your whatever. I can treat your sick, your wounded. I can be useful without... without this."
"You can be useful however we tell you to be useful." His voice dropped. "Or you can leave. Right now. Naked. With nothing. Go ahead. See how far you make it."
She looked at the wastes again. The sun was dropping toward the horizon. The temperature was already falling. She had no water. No food. No weapons. No shoes.
She'd be dead by morning.
Her hands curled into fists at her sides. Every instinct screamed at her to fight, to run, to do anything except submit. But she wasn't an animal. She was a scientist. She understood cost-benefit analysis. She understood delayed gratification. She understood that sometimes survival meant accepting the unacceptable.
"Six months," she said. "And then I can leave."
"Then you can petition for reassignment. After that, if you've accumulated enough work credits, you can request exit clearance. Most people take a couple of years to save up enough."
A couple of years.
She looked at the gate. At the buildings beyond. At the gardens and the water pumps and the promise of safety.
"Fine," she said. "I accept."
The older guard nodded. "Get her a uniform. Processing station three. I want her registered and assigned by nightfall."
The younger guard stepped forward, grabbing her arm. His grip was too tight, too possessive. She didn't resist. She let him lead her through the gate, into the settlement, past the curious stares of the people already living there.
She kept her eyes forward. Kept her mind working. Kept calculating.
A couple of years was too long. She'd find another way. She'd learn the system. Find weaknesses. Build alliances. Gather resources.
And when she was ready, she'd burn this place to the ground.
But first, she had to survive.
The younger guard, Landon according to the name stitched on his uniform, led her through a maze of corridors and common areas. The settlement was larger than she'd expected. Maybe five hundred people, maybe more. They lived in repurposed shipping containers and hastily constructed buildings, but there was order here. Structure. Systems.
She memorized everything she saw. Guard positions. Supply routes. Weak points in the walls.
"Here we are," Landon said, pushing open a door. "Processing."
The room was small and cold. A metal table sat in the center. A woman stood beside it, her face tired and her eyes hollow. She held a tablet and a stylus.
"New arrival," Landon said. "She's been cleared. Needs registration and assignment."
The woman nodded. "Name?"
"Kara Brent."
"Age?"
"Thirty-four."
"Medical training?"
"Doctorate in epidemiology. Field research experience. Basic surgical skills."
The woman's eyebrows rose slightly. She made a note on her tablet. "That's valuable. We don't get many medical professionals."
"She's on the rotation," Landon said. "Six-month mandatory."
The woman's expression flickered. Something like sympathy, quickly suppressed. "I see. Well, Dr. Brent, welcome to Haven. I'm Nadia. I'll be handling your processing."
Nadia gestured to the table. "Please lie down. I need to take your measurements and issue your uniform."
Kara looked at the table. At the cold metal surface. At the restraints hanging from the sides.
"Are those necessary?"
"Standard procedure for new arrivals," Nadia said. "Don't worry. This part is painless."
Landon was still standing in the doorway, watching. He wasn't going to leave. He wanted to see.
Kara climbed onto the table. The metal was cold against her bare skin. She lay back, staring at the ceiling, counting the cracks in the concrete.
Nadia worked quickly and efficiently. She measured Kara's height, her weight, her vital statistics. She took blood samples and swabbed her throat. She asked questions about her medical history, her family background, her education.
Through it all, Kara answered mechanically. Her mind was elsewhere. Planning. Calculating.
"Alright," Nadia said finally. "You're registered. Here's your uniform."
She handed Kara a bundle of cloth. A simple gray dress. Practical. Durable. And designed to be easily removed.
"Get dressed. Landon will take you to your quarters. You report for duty tomorrow at first light."
"Report for what duty?"
Nadia's eyes met hers. "Whatever they tell you to do. And whoever they tell you to do it with."
Kara pulled the dress over her head. The fabric was rough against her skin. It hung loose on her frame, doing nothing to hide her shape.
"One more thing," Nadia said, her voice dropping low. "The guards, they're going to test you. Push you. See what you'll tolerate. Don't fight them. Not openly. You'll lose."
"How do you survive it?"
Nadia's smile was bitter. "You don't. Not really. But you can learn to minimize the damage. Find allies. Learn the rules. And if you're smart, you find a way out."
"Is there a way out?"
Nadia didn't answer. She just looked at Kara with those hollow, knowing eyes.
Landon stepped forward. "Time to go. The captain wants to meet you."
"Captain?"
"Lareman. Head of security. He likes to personally welcome all the new medical arrivals."
The way he said it made Kara's stomach clench.
She followed him out of the processing room, through another maze of corridors, toward a door marked with the word "COMMAND."
She was a doctor. A researcher. A survivor.
She'd find a way out.
She had to.

She had to.
Contract of Flesh
The administrative building smelled of stale coffee and desperation. Kara followed the clerk through a maze of dusty corridors, her boots echoing against cracked linoleum. Every step reminded her of the inspection that had just ended, the ghost of hands still lingering on her skin.
The clerk was a thin man with nervous eyes and a twitch in his left cheek. He gestured to a metal desk bolted to the floor. "Sit."
Kara sat. The chair was cold through her thin pants. She watched him pull a folder from a filing cabinet, its edges worn and yellowed. He placed it in front of her and clicked a pen.
"Name?"
"Kara Brent."
"Previous occupation?"
"Research biologist. Specialized in soil remediation and crop adaptation."
The clerk's eyes flickered with something like recognition. "We could use that. But first, the contract."
He slid a single sheet of paper across the desk. The text was small, cramped, the font typewriter-style and faded. Kara picked it up, her eyes scanning the words with practiced efficiency.
Standard Settlement Agreement. In exchange for housing, rations, and protection, the undersigned agrees to contribute labor as assigned by the Settlement Authority. Labor includes but is not limited to: maintenance, agriculture, resource recovery, and personal services as deemed necessary for the functioning of the settlement.
"Personal services?" Kara's voice was flat.
The clerk's twitch worsened. "It's in the fine print."
She read on. Personal services shall be provided upon request of any authorized guard or administrative personnel. Refusal to provide services constitutes breach of contract and will result in immediate expulsion.
The clause sat on the page like a trap waiting to be sprung. Kara's throat tightened. She had known, on some level, what the settlement demanded. The inspection had made that brutally clear. But seeing it written, codified, made it real in a way that the rough hands and clinical commands hadn't.
"I can't sign this."
The clerk sighed. "You can, and you will. Or you can walk back out that door and see how long you last in the wastes. The radiation pockets are shifting. The raiders are getting bolder. Your choice."
Kara's fingers traced the edge of the paper. She thought of the wasteland she had crossed to get here. The endless gray plains of ash. The twisted skeletons of buildings that stretched toward a poisoned sky. She had survived that. She could survive this.
"What about my skills? The soil work?"
"You'll be assigned duties based on need. But everyone starts with the basics. And everyone... serves."
The word settled between them like sediment at the bottom of still water. Serves. Kara's stomach turned. She thought of the guards who had inspected her, their casual cruelty, the way they had treated her body like an object to be catalogued and approved. That was her future now. A future of being used.
But it was also a future with walls. With food. With a chance.
She picked up the pen. Her hand trembled slightly as she signed her name. The ink bled into the cheap paper, dark and permanent.
The clerk took the contract and stamped it with a loud thud. "Good. You're assigned to Sector C. Report to the supply depot at first light for work detail."
"And the... personal services?"
"You'll be informed when you're needed. Your first assignment is today. Captain Lareman requested you."
Kara's blood ran cold. "Captain Lareman?"
"He's the head of security. You'll meet him in his office. Down the hall, third door on the left."
She stood slowly, her legs unsteady. The clerk had already turned away, filing her contract, dismissing her with the finality of a judge passing sentence.
The hallway was dimly lit, the bulbs flickering with the settlement's unreliable power grid. Kara walked as if in a dream, her footsteps muffled by the threadbare carpet. She counted the doors. First. Second. Third.
She knocked.
"Enter."
The voice was deep, commanding, with the rough edge of someone who had spent years shouting orders. Kara pushed the door open.
Captain Lareman sat behind a large oak desk that looked out of place in the post-apocalyptic setting. His shaved head gleamed under the harsh fluorescent light. A scar ran from his temple to his jaw, a pale line against his weathered skin. His eyes were cold blue, like chips of ice, and they fixed on her with an intensity that made her want to shrink back.
"Dr. Brent." He didn't stand. "I've read your file."
"I'm sure you have."
"You're a smart woman. Educated. That's rare these days." He leaned back in his chair, the leather creaking. "But smart doesn't mean much out here. What matters is adaptability. And compliance."
Kara said nothing. She stood in front of his desk, her hands clasped behind her back, trying to project a calm she didn't feel.
"You understand the terms of your contract?"
"I understand them."
"And you accept them?"
"I signed them."
A thin smile crossed his face. It didn't reach his eyes. "Good. Then let's begin."
He stood, and Kara realized how tall he was. Over six feet, broad-shouldered, with the build of a man who had spent his life fighting. He walked around the desk, his boots heavy on the floor, and stopped in front of her.
"You're nervous."
"I'm... adjusting."
"You'll adjust faster if you stop fighting it." He reached out and touched her hair, running a strand between his fingers. "You're attractive. That's good. It means you'll be in demand."
Kara's skin crawled. She forced herself to remain still.
"The first time is always the hardest," Lareman continued, his voice conversational. "But it gets easier. You'll learn to separate yourself from what's happening. To go somewhere else in your mind. That's how you survive."
He stepped closer, his body inches from hers. She could smell him: sweat and leather, with something metallic underneath, like old blood. His hand moved from her hair to her shoulder, then down her arm.
"Undress."
The word was simple, direct. No room for negotiation. Kara's hands moved to the hem of her shirt, her fingers numb. She pulled it over her head, the fabric catching on her hair. She let it fall to the floor.
"Pants."
She unbuckled her belt, unbuttoned her pants, and pushed them down. She stepped out of them, her boots still on. She stood in her underwear, the air cold against her skin.
"All of it."
Her bra was next. She reached behind her back, unclasped it, and let the straps slide down her arms. Her breasts were exposed to the cold air, her nipples tightening involuntarily. Then her underwear, slipping the thin cotton down her hips and stepping out of the last barrier between herself and complete vulnerability. She stood naked before him, her arms at her sides, her eyes fixed on a point on the wall behind him. She felt exposed, reduced to nothing but flesh.
Lareman circled her slowly. His eyes traveled over her body, cataloguing every curve, every scar. He didn't touch her, not yet. He just looked, and that was somehow worse.
"You have a good body. Strong. You've taken care of yourself."
Kara said nothing.
"I like that. It shows discipline." He stopped behind her. "But discipline isn't the same as submission. We'll work on that."
His hands landed on her shoulders, warm and heavy. He pressed down, guiding her to her knees. The floor was hard against her shins, the cold seeping through her skin. She knelt before him, looking up at his face, his expression unreadable.
"You know what's expected," he said. "I don't need to explain it."
Kara's mouth went dry. She had imagined this moment, dreaded it, tried to prepare herself for it. But nothing could have prepared her for the reality. The cold floor. The looming figure. The weight of her own degradation pressing down on her like a physical force.
She reached out with trembling hands and unbuckled his belt. The metal clinked. She pulled down his zipper. His pants fell to his ankles. He wore nothing underneath. He was already hard, his cock thick and heavy, jutting from a nest of dark hair. She tried not to look, but her eyes were drawn to him. He was veined, intimidating, the head flushed dark with blood. She swallowed.
"Don't keep me waiting."
Kara leaned forward. She closed her eyes and parted her lips. The first taste was salt and skin and the bitter tang of pre-cum. She took the head into her mouth, her jaw straining to accommodate him. He was thick, thicker than anything she had known before, and her lips stretched around him.
Lareman's hand landed on the back of her head. "That's it. Slow. Use your tongue."
She obeyed. She had no choice. She moved her mouth along his length, her tongue tracing the prominent vein on the underside. She tried to find a rhythm, something bearable, but every second stretched into an eternity. Her tongue swirled around the head, tasting the slick fluid that leaked from him, bitter and musky.
"Take more," he commanded.
She did. She pushed forward, taking him deeper, feeling him hit the back of her throat. Her gag reflex triggered, and she pulled back slightly, coughing.
"Breathe through your nose," he said, his voice calm, instructional. "You'll get used to it."
Kara focused on breathing. In through the nose, out through the mouth. She took him again, deeper this time, her throat opening around him. He groaned, a low sound of approval, and his hand tightened in her hair.
"Good. That's good."
He guided her head, setting the pace. Faster. Deeper. His hips began to move, thrusting into her mouth with a measured rhythm. Her eyes watered. She gagged again, saliva pooling in her mouth and spilling over her lips, dripping down her chin. He didn't stop.
"Look at me," he said.
She opened her eyes, looking up at him through the blur of tears. His face was flushed, his cold blue eyes now dark with arousal. He watched her with a predator's satisfaction, his cock sliding between her swollen lips.
"You're learning," he said. "Keep going. Don't stop."
Kara tried to detach, to go somewhere else in her mind, like he had said. She thought of the wasteland. The open sky. The freedom she had traded for this. But the reality of him in her mouth kept pulling her back. The taste of him. The sound of his breathing. The wet, obscene sounds of her mouth working over him.
Minutes passed. Or hours. Time lost meaning. Her jaw ached. Her knees throbbed against the hard floor. She was crying, tears streaming down her cheeks, mixing with the saliva on her chin. She didn't make a sound.
Lareman's grip tightened. He thrust deeper, holding her head in place. She felt him swell, felt the pulse of his release as he came in her mouth. Hot, thick spurts that hit the back of her throat. She swallowed, forcing herself not to choke, not to pull away. Her throat worked around him, milking him, taking every drop he gave her.
He held her there for a long moment, his cock softening in her mouth. Then he let go. She collapsed backward, gasping, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. Her lips were swollen, her chin wet. She felt hollowed out.
Lareman pulled up his pants and buckled his belt. His face was unchanged, as if nothing had happened. "You did well. Better than most."
Kara didn't answer. She couldn't. She was shaking, her body wracked with tremors.
"You're dismissed. Report to the supply depot tomorrow. And Dr. Brent?"
She looked up at him.
"Don't think about running. There's nowhere to go. And the wastes are less forgiving than I am."
He turned back to his desk, dismissing her entirely. Kara gathered her clothes and dressed with shaking hands. She walked out of the office, down the hall, through the building, and out into the settlement's main courtyard.
The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the cracked pavement. People moved around her, going about their evening routines. No one looked at her. No one cared.
Kara found a bench and sat down. She stared at her hands, still trembling. She thought about the contract she had signed. About Lareman's cold eyes. About the taste of him still coating her tongue.
She thought about the wasteland. About the freedom she had left behind. About the freedom she would one day reclaim.
Because that was what this was now. A transaction. A temporary surrender. She would give them her body, piece by piece, and in return, she would gather resources. Information. Allies. And when the time was right, she would leave.
She looked up at the settlement walls, high and formidable. They weren't just keeping the wastes out. They were keeping her in.
But walls could be climbed. Contracts could be broken. And Kara Brent was not a woman who surrendered forever.
She stood, her legs steady now, and walked toward the housing block. Tomorrow, she would work. She would serve. She would plan.
And she would survive.
Daily Tolls
The morning light filtered through the grimy windows of the women's dormitory, painting pale stripes across the concrete floor. Kara lay on her thin mattress, every muscle aching from the previous night's encounter. She had slept in fits, her mind replaying the guard's rough hands, the way he had taken her without pretense of care.
She sat up slowly, wincing as her thighs protested. The dormitory held twelve bunks, most empty now as the other women had already reported for their day assignments. Only Nadia remained, sitting on her own bed across the room, mending a torn shirt with careful stitches.
"You're still here," Kara said, her voice rough from sleep.
Nadia didn't look up. "Kitchen duty doesn't start for another hour. I've got time."
Kara swung her legs over the edge of the bed. The settlement issued each woman a gray tunic and loose pants, practical but thin. She pulled them on, the fabric catching against the tender marks on her wrists where the guard had held her down.
"You get used to it," Nadia said, still focused on her sewing. "The soreness. The shame. It fades."
"I don't want to get used to it."
"That's what I said too." Nadia finally looked up, her weary eyes meeting Kara's. "Three months ago. Now I just count the days until my contract ends."
Kara stood, testing her balance. "And then what?"
"Then I leave. Or I re-sign. Depends on what I can save."
The word "save" caught Kara's attention. "They let you keep anything?"
Nadia's needle paused. "You get meal credits for extra shifts. Trade them for supplies. If you're smart, you hoard enough to make it worth leaving." She resumed her stitching. "If you're not, you stay here forever."
Kara filed that information away. Resources meant possibility. Escape required currency, and here, currency came in two forms: labor and flesh.
Her first assignment was laundry duty, a cramped room behind the mess hall where steam rose from boiling vats of water. Three other women worked in silence, scrubbing uniforms against washboards until their knuckles bled. Kara took her place beside them, the repetitive motion allowing her mind to wander.
She thought about the guard from last night. His name was Harris, a thick-necked man with yellow teeth and a methodical cruelty. He had followed the contract exactly: one hour, no more. He had not spoken to her, not acknowledged her as anything but a body to use. That was almost worse than the act itself.
But she had survived it. And now she knew what to expect.
Knowledge was power, however small.
By midday, her hands were raw and her back ached from leaning over the washboards. The overseer, a gaunt woman named Cora, dismissed them for a thirty-minute meal break. Kara filed into the mess hall, collected a bowl of thin stew, and found a corner table.
She had taken three bites when Landon slid onto the bench across from her. His tattooed arms rested on the table, his rough hands close to her bowl.
"You're on rotation tonight," he said, no greeting, no preamble.
Kara's spoon stopped halfway to her mouth. "I thought assignments came through the captain."
"They do. But I put in a request." He grinned, showing teeth. "Figured we could get to know each other better."
Her stomach tightened. "I'm sure you did."
"Don't look so thrilled. I'm nicer than most." He leaned back, studying her. "You've got that look. The one that says you're planning something."
"I'm planning how to finish my stew before it gets cold."
Landon laughed, a short bark. "I like you. You've got spine. Most women are crying by day two." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small metal tin. "Here. For after."
Kara eyed it suspiciously. "What is it?"
"Salve. For the chafing. Harris is rough, but I'm not." He slid it across the table. "Consider it a goodwill gesture."
She took the tin, turning it over in her fingers. "What do you want in return?"
"Nothing tonight. Just... think about being a little more cooperative. It goes easier when you don't fight."
"I didn't fight."
"You didn't participate either. There's a difference." He stood, pushing the bench back. "See you at sundown."
Kara watched him walk away, the tin cold in her palm. She opened it, smelling the herbal mixture inside. It could be poison. It could be a trap. But it could also be genuine, and that was the most dangerous possibility of all.
The afternoon brought supply sorting, a tedious task of cataloging scavenged goods in a dusty warehouse. Kara worked alone, stacking canned goods and counting ammunition boxes. The solitude gave her time to think.
She needed leverage. She needed allies. Landon was a guard, but he had offered her something without immediate demand. That was a crack in the system, a place to start.
The warehouse door creaked open. Kara's heart jumped, but it was only Nadia, carrying a clipboard.
"Inventory check," Nadia said, her voice flat. "Cora sent me."
Kara nodded, continuing her stacking. "How long have you been here?"
"Eight months." Nadia ran her finger down a list. "Four more to go."
"And then you're free?"
Nadia laughed, bitter and short. "Free. Right. Free to walk into the wastes with nothing but a pack and hope. Free to find another settlement that'll do the same thing." She looked at Kara. "There's no free out there. Just different kinds of cages."
"Then why stay?"
"Because inside the cage, at least I get fed."
Kara considered that. The settlement had walls, protection from the raiders and mutated creatures that roamed the ruins. It had food and water and medicine. The price was her body, her autonomy, piece by piece.
But every cage had a lock. And every lock had a key.
Sundown came too quickly. Kara reported to the guard quarters, a converted office building with cots and lockers. The common room smelled of sweat and cheap tobacco. Three guards sat playing cards, barely glancing up as she entered.
Landon waited by a door at the end of the hall. He had changed out of his uniform, wearing only loose pants and a thin shirt. He looked almost casual, almost friendly.
"You came," he said.
"I don't have a choice."
"There's always a choice." He opened the door, revealing a small room with a bed and a single chair. "But sometimes the other options are worse."
Kara stepped inside, her senses alert. The room was clean, surprisingly. A window looked out onto the darkened courtyard, the glass grimy but intact.
"I want to negotiate," she said.
Landon raised an eyebrow. "Negotiate what?"
"Terms. What you want, what I'm willing to give." She turned to face him, keeping her voice steady. "You said you're nicer than most. Prove it."
He crossed his arms, studying her. "I'm listening."
"I'll cooperate. Fully. No resistance, no cold compliance. But I want something in return."
"What?"
"Extra meal credits. Access to the supply room after hours. And information."
Landon's eyes narrowed. "Information about what?"
"The settlement. The walls. The patrol schedules." She held his gaze. "I'm not planning an escape. I'm planning to survive. And to survive, I need to understand how this place works."
He was quiet for a long moment. Then he laughed, shaking his head. "You've got balls, doc. I'll give you that."
"Is that a yes?"
"It's a maybe." He stepped closer, his hand reaching out to touch her cheek. His fingers were calloused but gentle. "First, I need to see if you can deliver."
Kara's skin crawled at his touch, but she forced herself to remain still. This was the transaction. This was how it worked.
"Tell me what you want," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Landon's hand slid down to her neck, his thumb tracing her collarbone. "I want you to mean it. Even if it's just for tonight, I want to feel like you're here because you chose to be."
She understood. The other guards wanted her body. Landon wanted her surrender, the illusion of consent. That was his currency.
She could give him that.
"Okay," she said, and she reached up to unbutton her tunic.
The fabric fell away, revealing the pale skin of her shoulders. Landon's breath caught, his eyes tracing the curve of her neck, the swell of her breasts above the edge of her undergarment. She stepped closer to him, closing the distance, and placed her palm flat against his chest. Beneath her hand, his heart beat quick and hard.
"I'm choosing this," she said, the words tasting like ash. "I'm choosing you."
He exhaled, a sound of relief or victory, she couldn't tell. His hands found her waist, pulling her against him. His mouth descended on hers, and she let him kiss her, let her lips part, let her tongue meet his.
The kiss was surprisingly tender. He took his time, exploring her mouth, his hands tracing the curve of her spine. She responded in kind, matching his rhythm, giving him the performance he wanted. Her fingers found the hem of his shirt, tugging it upward, and he broke the kiss long enough to pull it over his head.
He guided her to the bed, laying her down on the thin mattress. The window cast pale moonlight across the room, illuminating his face. He looked almost vulnerable, almost human.
"You're beautiful," he said, and she could hear the truth in his voice.
"Thank you." She reached up, pulling him down to her.
He kissed her again, deeper this time, his weight settling over her. His hand slid from her waist to her ribs, fingers tracing the soft skin beneath her breast. She inhaled sharply at the contact, and he paused, searching her face for permission.
She nodded.
His hand cupped her breast, his thumb brushing over her nipple through the thin fabric of her undergarment. She gasped against his mouth, and he groaned in response, the sound vibrating through her chest. He pulled the fabric down, baring her to the moonlight, and lowered his head to take her nipple between his lips.
The warmth of his mouth sent a shiver through her body. She arched into him, her fingers threading through his hair, holding him against her. He teased her with his tongue, circling and flicking until her breath came in short pants. She hated that her body responded to him, that her skin flushed with heat that had nothing to do with performance.
He undressed slowly, letting her watch. His body was stocky, covered in tattoos and scars from a hard life. He was not cruel, she realized. He was just a man who had learned to take what he wanted because nothing was ever given.
He unbuttoned her pants, sliding them down her hips along with her undergarment. The cool air hit her bare skin, raising goosebumps along her thighs. He knelt between her legs, his hands running up her calves, her knees, her inner thighs. His touch was unhurried, almost reverent.
"I want to taste you," he said, and before she could respond, his mouth was on her.
She bit her lip to stifle a cry. His tongue found her center, tracing slow circles that made her hips buck against him. He held her steady with one hand on her stomach, the other gripping her thigh. He worked her with deliberate patience, alternating between broad strokes and precise flicks that sent sparks behind her eyes.
She was wet. She hated that too. But her body betrayed her, responding to the attention, the warmth, the skill of his mouth. He slipped a finger inside her, curling it upward, and she moaned despite herself.
"That's it," he murmured against her. "Let me hear you."
She let the sounds come, soft and breathless. He added another finger, thrusting slowly while his tongue continued its maddening rhythm. Pressure built in her core, tightening like a spring. She grabbed the thin blanket beneath her, twisting the fabric in her fists.
"Landon," she gasped, and the name was both surrender and accusation.
He groaned against her flesh, increasing his pace. The pressure crested, and she broke apart, her body clenching around his fingers as waves of pleasure rolled through her. He worked her through it, slowing as the tremors subsided, pressing a kiss to her inner thigh before pulling away.
He crawled up her body, his mouth finding hers. She tasted herself on his lips, salt and musk. His erection pressed against her stomach, hot and hard, and she reached between them to wrap her hand around him.
He hissed at her touch, his hips jerking forward. She stroked him slowly, feeling the velvety skin over rigid flesh, the pulse of blood beneath her palm. He was thick, thicker than Harris, and she felt a flicker of apprehension.
"I need you inside me," she said, the words a calculated offering.
He positioned himself between her legs, the head of his cock pressing against her entrance. He was gentle, pushing forward with deliberate slowness, watching her face for any sign of pain. She was slick from her orgasm, and he slid in inch by inch until he filled her completely.
She winced, still tender from the night before, and he paused, muttering an apology against her throat. She wrapped her legs around him, pulling him deeper, and he groaned.
"God, you feel good," he breathed.
He began to move, withdrawing slowly before thrusting back in. Each stroke sent a jolt through her body, pleasure mixing with the lingering ache. She matched his rhythm, rolling her hips to meet him, and he responded by quickening his pace.
She didn't answer. She focused on the sensation, on the stretch and friction of him inside her, on the way his hands gripped her hips. She cataloged every detail, filing it away for later use. The angle that made her gasp. The pressure of his thumb against her clit as he thrust. The way his breathing hitched when she clenched around him.
"Look at me," he said, his voice rough.
She opened her eyes, meeting his gaze. Something passed between them, something that felt dangerously close to intimacy. She held his stare as he moved inside her, giving him the connection he craved.
He moved with increasing urgency, his breath coming in short gasps. She arched her back, moaning on cue, and he buried his face in her neck. His thrusts grew erratic, his body tensing above her, and she felt him pulse inside her as he came, a groan escaping his lips.
He collapsed against her, his weight pressing her into the mattress. His chest heaved against hers, his heartbeat thundering through her ribs. She lay still, staring at the ceiling, waiting for him to move.
After a moment, he rolled to the side, his hand resting on her stomach. The room was quiet, the distant sound of guards laughing in the common room.
"You kept your word," he said.
"So did you." She turned to face him. "Does that mean we have a deal?"
He studied her for a long moment, something shifting in his eyes. "I'll see what I can do about the meal credits. The supply room is trickier, but I know a guy who owes me a favor."
"And the information?"
"One question a night. For now." He sat up, reaching for his pants. "Don't push it, doc. I'm already risking more than I should."
Kara nodded, pulling her tunic back on. "One question. Tonight."
He paused, looking back at her. "What?"
"How many guards patrol the east wall at night?"
Landon's eyes narrowed. "Two. But they rotate every three hours."
"Thank you."
He shook his head, a grudging smile on his face. "You're dangerous, you know that?"
"I'm learning."
She left the guard quarters under the watchful eyes of the card players. The night air was cool against her flushed skin, and she walked back to the dormitory with measured steps.
Nadia was awake when she entered, sitting on her bunk with a book.
"You made a deal," Nadia said. It wasn't a question.
"I made a start."
Nadia closed her book, her eyes meeting Kara's in the dim light. "Be careful. Every deal here has a cost."
"I know." Kara lay down on her mattress, staring at the ceiling. "But I'm learning to count."
The settlement's walls loomed outside the window, dark and impassive. But Kara had the first piece of the puzzle now. Two guards on the east wall. Three hours between rotations.
It wasn't much. But it was a beginning.
And she would build on it, one transaction at a time.
The Informant's Price
The morning light barely penetrated the grime-caked windows of the mess hall. Kara pushed a spoon through her watery porridge, her eyes scanning the room without seeming to. Three days of careful questions, of trading small favors for whispered answers, had led her to a name.
Silas.
He wasn't a settlement man. He was a trader who passed through every few weeks, bartering scavenged goods for supplies. More importantly, he knew the routes through the radiation belts to the north, the safe paths that the settlement's patrols never traveled.
Kara had watched him arrive the previous evening, his battered truck loaded with salvaged electronics and rusted tools. He'd traded with Captain Lareman for an hour, then disappeared into the bunkhouse reserved for visitors.
Now she waited. She'd slipped a note under his door before dawn. A single line: I need to talk. The old pump station. Sunset.
The day crawled past. Kara performed her assigned tasks, sorting medical supplies in the clinic, her hands moving automatically while her mind raced. Nadia shot her curious glances but didn't ask questions. That was the unwritten rule of the settlement. You didn't ask what you didn't want to know.
When the sun began to sink toward the horizon, painting the broken skyline in shades of rust and amber, Kara made her move. She told the gate guard she needed to scavenge for medicinal herbs. A lie, but a plausible one. The guard, a young man named Jensen who'd used her twice in the past week, waved her through with a leering grin.
"Don't wander too far," he called after her. "Wouldn't want anything to happen to you."
Kara forced a smile and kept walking.
The old pump station sat half a mile from the settlement walls, a collapsed concrete structure that had once pumped water from the river. Now it was a skeleton, its bones exposed to the sky, the ground around it littered with rusted pipes and broken machinery.
Silas was already there, leaning against a crumbling wall, a cigarette dangling from his lips. He was younger than she'd expected, maybe late twenties, with sun-browned skin and sharp eyes that missed nothing. His clothes were practical, patched in multiple places, and a handgun sat holstered at his hip.
"You're the doctor," he said. It wasn't a question.
"Former researcher." Kara stopped a few feet away, keeping her distance. "I need information."
"I figured." He took a long drag on his cigarette, studying her. "You're not the first person in that place to want out. What makes you think I can help you?"
"You travel the northern routes. You know the safe paths through the radiation belts." Kara kept her voice steady, professional. "I need a map showing where the patrols don't go."
Silas laughed, a dry sound that echoed off the concrete walls. "That's valuable information. What makes you think I'd give it to you?"
Kara had expected this question. She'd rehearsed answers in her head all day, but standing here, under his sharp gaze, the words felt hollow. She had nothing to trade. No supplies, no weapons, no currency that mattered in this broken world.
Except one thing.
"I can make it worth your while," she said, and the words tasted like ash.
Silas's eyes traveled over her body, slow and deliberate. She'd worn her best clothes, the ones that weren't too torn or stained. It felt like a costume, a mask she was putting on.
"I've heard about you," he said. "The new woman. The one who services the guards." He dropped his cigarette and ground it out with his boot. "They say you're learning the game."
"I'm surviving."
"Same thing." He stepped closer, and Kara forced herself to hold her ground. "You want my knowledge. I want something in return. Let's not pretend this is anything other than a transaction."
"I'm not pretending."
"Good." He reached out and traced a finger along her jawline, his touch rough and calloused. "Then let's talk about the price."
The negotiation took ten minutes, each second stretching like wire. Silas was shrewd, demanding more than she wanted to give, but Kara had learned something in her weeks at the settlement. She'd learned how to bargain with her body, how to set terms that minimized damage while maximizing gain.
"One night," she said finally. "Full access. And in exchange, you give me everything you know about the northern routes. Every safe passage, every water source, anywhere a patrol might be waiting."
"One night, and I get to choose how it goes."
"Within reason." Kara met his eyes. "I'm not here to be broken. I'm here to trade."
Silas studied her for a long moment, then nodded. "Deal."
The ruins of the pump station had a small room at its center, a space that had once been an office. The roof had held, and the walls still stood, offering a semblance of privacy. Silas spread a blanket on the concrete floor, and Kara watched him, her heart pounding in her chest.
This was different from the guards. The guards took what they wanted because they could, because the settlement's rules gave them the right. This was a choice. A transaction. And somehow, that made it harder.
"Nervous?" Silas asked, not unkindly.
"I'm calculating."
He laughed again, but this time there was something softer in it. "You're different from the others. Most of them have given up by now. They've stopped fighting."
"I haven't."
"I can see that." He sat down on the blanket, patting the space beside him. "Come here."
Kara crossed the room and lowered herself to the blanket, keeping a foot of distance between them. The concrete was cold through the thin fabric, and the air smelled of dust and decay.
"What do you want?" she asked, her voice flat.
"To see you." Silas reached out and took her hand, turning it over to examine her palm. "To know who I'm dealing with."
"You're dealing with someone who wants to leave."
"I know that." His thumb traced the lines of her palm, slow and deliberate. "But I also know that you're not just a survivor. You're a planner. A strategist. You've got that look in your eyes, the one that says you're thinking three moves ahead."
Kara didn't respond. She didn't trust herself to speak.
Silas lifted her hand to his lips and pressed a kiss to her palm, and the gesture was so unexpected that she flinched. He noticed but didn't comment.
"I'm not going to hurt you," he said. "I'm not one of your guards. I want this to be good for both of us."
"It's a transaction."
"Transactions can be pleasurable." He released her hand and reached for the buttons of her shirt. "May I?"
The question caught her off guard. None of the guards had ever asked. They'd simply taken, their hands rough and demanding, their bodies heavy and insistent. Silas was waiting, his fingers hovering over the top button, his eyes asking permission.
Kara nodded, and he began to undress her.
He moved slowly, methodically, as if he had all the time in the world. Each button came undone with deliberate care. He parted the fabric and exposed her shoulders, her collarbone, the curve of her breasts. He didn't rush. He didn't grab or grope. He simply looked, his eyes traveling over her skin with an appreciation that felt almost reverent.
"You're beautiful," he said.
"I'm practical."
"Both can be true." He slid the shirt from her shoulders and let it fall to the blanket. Then he reached for the waistband of her pants.
Kara lifted her hips to help him, and he pulled the fabric down her legs, leaving her in nothing but her underwear. The cold air raised goosebumps on her skin, and she shivered.
Silas sat back and looked at her, his expression unreadable. "Lie down."
She did, stretching out on the blanket, her body tense and waiting. He moved to kneel beside her, his hands resting on his own thighs.
"I'm going to touch you now," he said. "Tell me if you want me to stop."
His hands came to rest on her shoulders, his thumbs tracing circles on her skin. The touch was light, almost gentle, and Kara felt some of the tension in her muscles begin to ease. He worked his way down her arms, his fingers trailing along the sensitive skin of her inner elbows, her wrists, her palms.
"You're so tense," he murmured. "When's the last time someone touched you like this?"
"They don't touch. They take."
"I know." His hands moved to her ribs, his thumbs brushing the undersides of her breasts. "But this is different. This is a trade. And my payment should be worth it."
He lowered his head and pressed his lips to her stomach, just below her navel. Kara's breath caught. The sensation was unexpected, intimate in a way she hadn't prepared for. His mouth moved slowly across her skin, leaving warm trails of moisture that cooled in the night air.
"You taste like salt and survival," he said against her skin.
Kara didn't know how to respond, so she said nothing.
Silas worked his way lower, his hands sliding her underwear down her thighs. She lifted her hips again, and he pulled the fabric away, leaving her completely exposed. The air was cool against her wetness, and she felt a flush of heat rise to her cheeks.
He settled between her legs, his breath warm against her inner thighs. "I'm going to taste you now."
It wasn't a question, but it wasn't a command either. It was a statement of intent, and Kara found herself nodding, her body responding before her mind could catch up.
His tongue touched her, and she gasped.
The sensation was electric, a jolt of pleasure that shot through her core and spread outward. He was skilled, his tongue finding every sensitive spot, his rhythm shifting and changing to keep her off balance. He didn't rush. He didn't push for her climax. He simply explored, tasting and teasing, learning her body with his mouth.
Kara's hands found his hair, her fingers tangling in the short strands. She didn't know if she was pulling him closer or trying to push him away. The pleasure was overwhelming, building slowly, relentlessly, like a wave that kept rising without breaking.
"Please," she heard herself say, and she didn't know what she was asking for.
Silas responded by doubling his efforts, his tongue pressing harder, his fingers joining the assault. He slid one finger inside her, then two, curling them in a way that made her see stars. The wave finally broke, and Kara cried out, her body arching off the blanket as the orgasm ripped through her.
He didn't stop. He kept licking, kept pressing, drawing out every last tremor until she was trembling and oversensitive. Only then did he pull back, his chin glistening, his eyes dark with desire.
"That was for you," he said. "Now it's my turn."
He stood and undressed quickly, his movements efficient. His body was lean and scarred, the body of a man who had survived in the wasteland for years. His cock was hard, jutting out from his body, and Kara felt a flicker of something between fear and anticipation.
He knelt between her legs again, positioning himself at her entrance. "Last chance to change the terms."
"I don't want to change them."
He entered her in one smooth thrust, and Kara's breath left her in a rush. He was thicker than the guards, and he filled her completely, stretching her in a way that bordered on pain. But he didn't move. He stayed still, giving her time to adjust, his eyes locked on hers.
"You feel incredible," he said.
"Move."
He did, slowly at first, each thrust measured and deliberate. He watched her face, reading her reactions, adjusting his pace and angle based on her responses. It was maddening and wonderful, this attention to her pleasure. She wasn't used to it. She didn't know how to accept it.
"Relax," he murmured, his lips against her ear. "Let yourself feel this."
Kara tried. She closed her eyes and focused on the sensations, the way his body moved against hers, the heat building in her core again. She was still sensitive from her first orgasm, and the pleasure was sharp, almost too intense.
He shifted his angle, and suddenly he was hitting a spot that made her gasp. He smiled, a predatory glint in his eyes, and began to thrust harder, faster, each stroke driving her toward another peak.
"Come for me again," he said, his voice rough. "I want to feel you come on my cock."
The words, crude and demanding, pushed her over the edge. She climaxed with a cry, her body clenching around him, and he followed a moment later, his own release hot and pulsing inside her.
They lay there for a long moment, tangled together, breathing hard. Silas pulled out and rolled onto his back, staring up at the cracked ceiling.
"That was..." He trailed off, searching for words.
"A transaction," Kara finished.
"Yeah." He turned his head to look at her. "But a good one."
Kara sat up and began to dress, her movements mechanical. She felt hollowed out, raw, but also strangely clear-headed. The information she needed was within reach.
"The routes," she said.
Silas sat up and reached for his pack, pulling out a crumpled map. He spread it on the blanket and began to trace lines with his finger. "Here. And here. These paths are safe. The radiation is low, and the patrols never go this far north."
Kara memorized every detail, her mind cataloging the information like data from an old experiment. Water sources, shelter points, danger zones. She absorbed it all, building a map in her mind.
When he was done, she folded the map and tucked it into her shirt. "Thank you."
"Don't thank me." Silas lit another cigarette, the flame casting shadows across his face. "We made a deal. We both got what we wanted."
Kara stood and walked to the door of the ruined office. The night air was cold, and the stars were bright overhead, unpolluted by city lights. She looked back at Silas, still sitting on the blanket, watching her with an unreadable expression.
"If you ever make it out," he said, "look me up. I could use someone with your... skills."
"I'll keep that in mind."
She stepped out into the ruins and began the walk back to the settlement. The map was a solid weight against her chest, and for the first time in weeks, she allowed herself to believe that escape was possible.
The guards would be waiting. The settlement would demand its daily toll. But Kara had something now that she hadn't had before.
A plan.
And she would follow it, no matter what it cost her.
Jealousy and Power
The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the settlement's central courtyard as Kara finished her assigned task of sorting salvaged wiring. Her fingers moved automatically, separating copper from aluminum, while her mind wandered through escape routes and supply caches. Three weeks of service had taught her the rhythms of the compound, the patterns of guard rotations, the moments when attention drifted.
Footsteps approached with purpose. She didn't look up.
"You're popular today," Nadia muttered from her position at the next sorting table.
Kara's hands paused. "What do you mean?"
Nadia's eyes flicked toward the guard barracks entrance. Captain Lareman stood there, arms crossed, watching her with that cold possessive gaze she had learned to dread. Beside him, Landon leaned against the wall, his tattooed arms folded, his expression unreadable.
"They've been arguing all morning," Nadia continued, her voice barely above a whisper. "About you."
Kara's stomach tightened. She had known this moment would come eventually. She had been careful, distributing her compliance evenly, never showing preference. But careful wasn't enough when men treated women like resources to be claimed.
"Great," she breathed.
The confrontation came at dusk. Kara was returning to her quarters when Landon stepped from the shadows, his hand closing around her arm.
"Come with me."
Before she could respond, another voice cut through the cooling air.
"She's assigned to me tonight."
Lareman emerged from the opposite direction, his shaved head gleaming in the fading light, his scarred face set in hard lines. He walked with the confidence of a man who had never been challenged successfully.
Landon's grip tightened. "The rotation schedule says different."
"The rotation schedule answers to me."
Kara stood between them, her heart hammering, her mind racing through calculations. Two predators circling the same prey. The wrong move would tear her apart. The right move might give her leverage.
"Gentlemen," she said, forcing her voice level. "Perhaps we can find a solution that works for everyone."
Both men turned to look at her. She saw surprise in Landon's eyes, suspicion in Lareman's.
"What solution?" Lareman asked.
Kara swallowed. "One that doesn't leave anyone feeling unsatisfied."
The barracks room was sparse. A narrow cot, a single chair, a lamp that cast harsh shadows across the concrete walls. Lareman had insisted on his territory, and Landon had followed, his jaw tight, his fists clenched.
Kara stood in the center of the room, acutely aware of the power imbalance. Two men who could take whatever they wanted. One woman who had to give it willingly or face the consequences.
"Take off your clothes," Lareman ordered.
She complied slowly, deliberately, using the moments to gather herself. The shirt came first, pulled over her head to reveal the soft swell of her breasts beneath a worn sports bra. Then the pants, sliding down her legs to expose thighs that had grown leaner from ration portions. She stood in her underclothes, the cool air raising goosebumps across her skin.
"All of it."
Kara reached behind her back, unhooked the bra, and let it fall from her shoulders. Her breasts spilled free, nipples tightening in the chill. She hooked her thumbs into her underwear and pushed them down, stepping out of them to stand completely naked and exposed under their gazes.
Landon circled her like a wolf assessing prey, his eyes hungry, tracking the curves of her body with obvious appreciation. Lareman stayed still, watching her face, reading her expressions rather than her form.
"I've been patient," Landon said, his voice rough. "I've shared. But I'm tired of waiting in line."
"You think you deserve priority?" Lareman's voice dripped with contempt.
"I think I've earned more than standard rotation."
Kara's mind worked furiously. They were arguing about her like she wasn't there, like she was a piece of meat to be divided. But their competition created space. Space she could use.
"Perhaps," she said quietly, "the issue isn't priority. Perhaps it's comparison."
Both men stopped, looking at her.
"What do you mean?" Lareman asked.
Kara took a breath. She was walking a razor's edge. "You both want to know if you're better. If she responds more to one of you. If she remembers one of you more vividly." She let her voice drop, becoming almost intimate. "I can answer those questions. But only if you let me."
The silence stretched. Then Landon laughed, a rough sound that held no humor.
"She's playing us."
"Of course she is," Lareman said. "That doesn't make her wrong."
He stepped forward, his hand reaching out to grip her chin, tilting her face up. His thumb traced her lower lip, pressing slightly until her mouth parted.
"Show us," he said. "Show us who you respond to more."
Kara dropped to her knees. The concrete was cold against her bare skin, but she didn't flinch. She looked up at both men, her green eyes calculating even as her body prepared for submission.
"Who goes first?" she asked.
Landon moved before Lareman could answer. He unfastened his belt, let his pants fall, and stepped toward her. His cock was already hard, thick and demanding, the head flushed dark with arousal.
"Start with me," he said. "Prove yourself."
Kara leaned forward, her hands resting on his thighs, feeling the muscle tense beneath her palms. She extended her tongue, tracing a slow line from base to tip, tasting the salt of his skin. Then she took him into her mouth slowly, deliberately, her tongue working along the underside as she engulfed him inch by inch.
She heard Lareman's breathing change behind her, felt his eyes on her back like a physical weight. She focused on Landon, giving him her full attention. Her hand wrapped around the shaft where her mouth couldn't reach, stroking in rhythm with her lips. Her other hand moved to cup his balls, rolling them gently as she worked.
Landon's breath caught above her. His fingers tangled in her hair, not pushing, just holding, guiding her rhythm. She could feel him twitching against her tongue, could taste the first drops of his excitement.
"Look at her," Lareman said, his voice tight. "She's good at that."
"She's eager," Landon replied, his voice strained.
Kara pulled back, letting him slip from her lips with a wet sound. A thin string of saliva connected her mouth to his cock before it broke. She looked up at him, then turned her head to find Lareman watching with narrowed eyes.
"Do you want me to continue, or do you want to compare?"
Lareman stepped forward, his hand closing around her arm, pulling her to her feet. He spun her around, bending her over the narrow cot. His hand came down on her ass, hard, the sound echoing in the small room. The sting bloomed across her skin, heat spreading through her flesh.
"You'll take us both," he said. "And you'll tell us which one you prefer."
Landon moved behind her, his hands spreading her cheeks, his thumbs brushing the sensitive skin of her inner thighs. She felt the blunt head of his cock pressing against her entrance, already slick from her earlier attention.
"Or maybe we'll decide for ourselves," Landon said.
He pushed into her with one long thrust, filling her completely. Kara gasped, her fingers gripping the thin mattress. He was thick, stretching her open, and she felt every inch as he seated himself fully inside her.
He set a brutal pace, his hands gripping her hips hard enough to bruise. His breath came hot against the back of her neck as he drove into her repeatedly.
"Feel that?" he growled. "Feel how tight you are for me?"
Lareman stood in front of her, having shed his own clothing. His cock was different from Landon's, longer, leaner, and he held it level with her face. "Open your mouth."
She obeyed, and he slid inside, his hands cradling her head rather than gripping it. He was slower, more deliberate, watching her face as she serviced him. His eyes never left hers, reading every flicker of emotion, every twitch of muscle.
They moved together, two men using her body from both ends. Their rhythms competed, Landon's rough pace driving her forward onto Lareman's length, Lareman's controlled thrusts pushing her back onto Landon's. Kara became a vessel for their rivalry, a battlefield where their egos clashed.
Landon's hand snaked around her hip, his fingers finding her clit. He rubbed in tight circles as he fucked her, and despite herself, despite her calculations, Kara felt her body responding. Wetness flooded her channel, making Landon's thrusts slicker, easier. Her walls clenched around him involuntarily.
"There it is," Landon groaned. "She's tightening up. She likes this."
"She likes what I let her like," Lareman corrected, his thumb stroking her cheek as he fucked her mouth.
The sensation was building, pressure coiling in her belly. She tried to fight it, tried to keep her mind separate from her body, but Landon's fingers were relentless, and the fullness of having them both inside her was overwhelming her senses.
"Who's better?" Landon demanded, his thrusts growing rougher, deeper. "Tell me."
Kara couldn't answer with her mouth full. Lareman pulled back, allowing her to breathe, his cock resting against her lips, smearing them with moisture.
"Say it," Lareman said. "Tell him who you prefer."
She was caught between them, literally and figuratively. Her mind raced through options. Praise one and she gained an ally but made an enemy. Praise the other and she lost the one who might help her escape.
"Different," she gasped, her voice breaking as Landon hit something deep inside her. "You're different."
"That's not an answer," Landon said, his hand gripping her hair, pulling her head back.
"It's the truth." Her voice was strained, breathless. "Lareman commands. Landon takes. I respond to both."
Lareman's hand came down on her ass again, harder this time, the crack of his palm making her flinch. "You're deflecting."
"Yes." She didn't deny it. "Because I don't want to lose either of you."
The admission hung in the air. It was true, but not for the reasons they thought. She needed both of them. Landon for his access to supplies and information. Lareman for his authority and protection. Playing them against each other was dangerous, but it was her only path forward.
Landon pulled out, his cock glistening with her arousal. He flipped her over, spreading her legs wide. "I want to see your face when I finish."
He entered her again, this time facing her, his weight pressing her into the cot. She wrapped her legs around his waist instinctively, her heels digging into his lower back. His mouth found her neck, then her breasts, his tongue circling her nipples before his teeth grazed the sensitive peaks.
Behind her head, Lareman positioned himself. His cock slid past her lips again, filling her mouth. She felt his hand in her hair, gentle but firm, guiding her rhythm.
The sensation was overwhelming. Two men, two rhythms, competing demands on her body. She lost herself in the physicality of it, her body responding despite her mind's resistance. Her hips rose to meet Landon's thrusts, her inner muscles clenching around him, while her mouth worked Lareman's length with hungry determination.
Landon's fingers returned to her clit, and this time she couldn't hold back. The pressure that had been building crested, and her orgasm crashed through her. She cried out around Lareman's cock, her body convulsing, her walls clenching and releasing around Landon's shaft in waves.
"That's it," Lareman groaned above her. "That's how you earn your keep."
"Fuck, she's squeezing me," Landon gasped, his pace quickening, his breathing ragged. "I'm close."
"Not yet," Lareman commanded. "Not until I say."
But Landon was beyond listening. His body tensed, his hips driving deep, and he came with a guttural cry. She felt him pulsing inside her, his seed spilling in hot spurts. He collapsed against her, his weight crushing her into the mattress, his breath ragged against her throat.
Lareman pulled out of her mouth, his face twisted with anger. "I gave you an order."
"She's mine," Landon said, his voice hoarse. "She's always been mine."
"She belongs to the settlement. To me."
Kara lay beneath them, her body aching, her mind spinning. The rivalry had reached a new pitch. She had to control it, channel it, before it consumed her.
"Please," she said, her voice small. "Don't fight over me."
Both men looked down at her. She made herself look vulnerable, afraid, even as her mind calculated the next move.
"I'll do whatever you want," she said. "Both of you. Just don't hurt each other."
Lareman's expression softened, just slightly. Landon's grip on her hip loosened.
"You're a clever one," Lareman said. "Playing peacemaker."
"I'm trying to survive."
Landon pulled out of her, his release trickling down her thigh as he rolled onto his back. He stared at the ceiling, his chest heaving. "She's right. Fighting over her is pointless."
Lareman looked at her, his eyes unreadable. "Get dressed. We'll continue this discussion tomorrow."
Kara gathered her clothes, her hands trembling. She dressed quickly, feeling their eyes on her, feeling the weight of what had just happened. Her body was sore, satisfied in ways she didn't want to acknowledge.
As she reached the door, Landon's voice stopped her.
"Tomorrow night. My quarters."
She nodded, not turning around.
"And the night after," Lareman added, "you're with me."
Kara stepped into the corridor, closing the door behind her. She leaned against the wall, her body shaking, her mind churning.
She had survived. She had navigated their jealousy, turned their competition into a temporary shield. But the cost was mounting. Each encounter chipped away at something essential, something she wasn't sure she could recover.
And yet.
She had seen the cracks in their alliance. The resentment, the possessiveness, the hunger for dominance. She could exploit those cracks, widen them, until they split apart entirely.
But to do that, she would have to give more of herself. Her body, her dignity, whatever remained of her soul.
Kara pushed off the wall and walked toward her quarters, her footsteps echoing in the empty corridor. The night was over, but the war had just begun.
And she was determined to win.
Resource Run
The predawn air bit through Kara's thin jacket as she stood in the courtyard, watching the expedition team load supplies onto the reinforced truck. Days of planning, of volunteering for every dangerous task that presented itself, had led to this moment. Her fingers traced the outline of the small knife hidden in her boot, a reminder that outside these walls, the rules changed.
"You're with the retrieval team." Landon's voice came from behind her, rough and dismissive. He pointed toward the southern gate where two other scavengers waited. "Stay close, keep your mouth shut, and do what you're told."
Kara nodded, keeping her expression neutral. The past week had taught her the value of silence, of watching and waiting. She climbed into the truck bed beside a young man named Elias and a woman whose face bore the scars of countless expeditions. The engine coughed to life, and the settlement gates groaned open like the jaws of some ancient beast.
The wastes stretched before them, endless and gray. Ruined buildings jutted from the earth like broken teeth, their windows empty sockets staring at nothing. Kara's chest tightened as they passed the boundary. She hadn't been outside the walls since her arrival. The air tasted different here, metallic and sharp, carrying the faint scent of decay.
"First time out?" The scarred woman asked, not unkindly.
Kara nodded. "Is it always this quiet?"
"Quiet means safe." The woman spat over the side of the truck. "When it gets loud, you run. Simple as that."
The truck rattled southward, following a path that only the driver seemed to know. Kara studied the landscape, memorizing landmarks, noting potential hiding spots and escape routes. Every detail mattered. Every piece of information could mean the difference between freedom and another year of servitude.
They stopped at what had once been a warehouse, its roof collapsed but its lower levels intact. Landon jumped from the cab, his rifle swinging across his chest. "Alright, we've got two hours. Grab everything that isn't nailed down. Medical supplies, tools, ammo. Anything that looks useful."
Kara followed the team inside, her eyes adjusting to the dim light. The warehouse floor was littered with debris, rusted shelving units toppled like fallen soldiers. She moved methodically, filling her pack with canned goods and bandages, but her real target lay deeper. Nadia had told her about this place, about the old armory in the basement that most scavengers avoided because of the unstable floor.
"I'm going to check the lower level." She said, her voice steady.
Landon glanced at her, suspicion flickering in his eyes. "Watch your step. That floor's been rotting for twenty years."
She descended the concrete stairs, each step echoing in the silence. The basement was darker, cooler, the air thick with dust. She found the armory easily enough, its door hanging crooked on rusted hinges. Inside, racks of old military rifles stood covered in cobwebs, their wooden stocks cracked but their metal components still intact. She began gathering what she could carry, her heart pounding with each precious addition to her pack.
A sound stopped her cold. Footsteps, heavy and deliberate, coming from the far end of the basement. She pressed herself against the wall, her hand finding the knife in her boot. The footsteps grew closer, accompanied by voices, rough and laughing.
Raiders. They must have been using this place as a camp.
Kara moved silently, retracing her steps toward the stairs. But a shadow fell across the entrance, and a man stepped into view. He was tall, broad-shouldered, his face hidden behind a makeshift mask of leather and metal. His eyes found her instantly, and a slow smile spread across what she could see of his mouth.
"Well, well. What do we have here?" His voice was gravelly, amused. "A little bird from the settlement, all alone in the dark."
Kara's mind raced. She could hear more voices behind him, at least three others. Fighting was suicide. Running meant leaving the supplies she needed. She had one option, and it sickened her even as she reached for it.
"I'm not alone." She said, forcing her voice to stay calm. "My team is upstairs. They'll come looking for me."
"Will they?" The raider stepped closer, his hand moving to the knife at his belt. "I don't hear anyone coming. I don't hear anything at all."
Kara's throat tightened. She could scream, bring Landon and the others running. But that would mean losing the armory, losing her chance at escape. She'd be back to square one, back to servicing guards and counting rations. Or worse, she'd be confined to the settlement, watched every moment.
She made her choice.
"Maybe we can come to an arrangement." She said, letting her voice drop, taking on a tone she'd learned in the past week. "I have something you might want. Something that doesn't require anyone getting hurt."
The raider's laugh was low and dark. "You're offering yourself? Down here, in the dirt?"
"I'm offering a distraction." Kara corrected, her heart hammering. "Your men stay back. You and I have a private conversation. And when it's over, I go upstairs, and you pretend you never saw me."
He studied her for a long moment, his eyes traveling over her body with predatory interest. "And what makes you think I'd keep my word?"
"Because if you don't, my team will hear the shots. And they'll come down here with enough firepower to turn this basement into your grave." She held his gaze, willing herself not to shake. "A quick transaction, and everyone walks away happy. Isn't that better than a fight?"
The raider considered this, then gestured for his men to stay back. He grabbed Kara by the arm, pulling her into a side room, a former office whose furniture had long since rotted away. He pushed her against the wall, his body pressing against hers, the smell of sweat and smoke thick on his skin.
"You've got guts, I'll give you that." He said, his hand sliding down her side, fingers tracing the curve of her hip through the thin fabric of her pants. "Most people beg. You negotiate."
"I'm not most people." Kara's voice was steady, but her hands trembled as she reached for his belt. This was different from the settlement. There was no hierarchy here, no rules to navigate. Just raw survival, stripped of all pretense.
He caught her wrist before she could undo the buckle, his grip firm but not cruel. He studied her face in the dim light filtering through a cracked window above, his thumb pressing into the soft skin of her inner wrist where her pulse raced like a trapped bird.
"Eager." He murmured, releasing her hand only to grab a fistful of her hair, tilting her head back. His mouth found her throat, teeth grazing the sensitive skin just below her jaw. Not a kiss. A claiming. His other hand slid beneath the hem of her shirt, calloused palms rough against her stomach, moving upward with deliberate slowness.
Kara inhaled sharply when his hand closed over her breast, squeezing hard enough to make her gasp. He pinched her nipple between his fingers, rolling it, watching her face for a reaction. She gave him nothing. No pleasure, no fear. Just the flat, calculated blankness she'd perfected over the past week.
That seemed to irritate him. Or excite him. She couldn't tell which.
He yanked her shirt up, exposing her to the cold basement air. Her skin pebbled, gooseflesh racing down her arms. He bent his head, his mouth replacing his fingers, tongue circling her nipple before his teeth closed around it. She bit back a sound, not of pleasure, but of something more complicated. Her body responded despite her mind's detachment. Heat pooled between her legs, unwelcome and traitorous.
"That's better." He growled against her skin. "Let's see what else you can do."
He didn't bother with gentleness after that. His hands tore at her clothes, pulling her pants down roughly, taking her underwear with them. The cold air hit her exposed flesh and she gasped, the shock of it stealing her breath. He turned her around, pressing her face against the concrete wall, the rough surface scraping her cheek and palms.
She heard him undo his belt, the metallic clink of the buckle, the zip of his pants. He kicked her feet apart, positioning her, his hand pressing down on the small of her back to arch her hips toward him. His fingers found her between her legs, probing, testing. She was wet, and the knowledge seemed to please him.
"You wanted a distraction." He growled, his fingers digging into her hips. "Let's see how distracting you can be."
He pressed against her entrance, paused for one agonizing moment, then pushed inside her with a single brutal thrust. Kara cried out, the sound torn from her throat before she could stop it. The stretch was immediate and severe, her body struggling to accommodate him. He was thick, thicker than anyone she'd been with at the settlement, and he didn't give her time to adjust.
He pulled back and drove into her again, setting a punishing rhythm that left her gasping. The wall scraped her palms raw as she braced herself, trying to find purchase, trying to keep her footing. Each thrust pushed her harder against the concrete, her cheek scraping, her breasts pressed flat against the cold surface.
"Take it." He grunted, his hips slamming against her ass with a sound that echoed through the empty room. "Take all of it."
Kara closed her eyes, focusing on the sensation, using it to anchor herself. She counted his thrusts, measured her breathing, kept her mind separate from her body. The pain faded into something else, a dull ache that spread through her core, and beneath it, a flicker of something she refused to name.
His hand left her hip and grabbed her hair again, pulling her head back, forcing her spine to arch deeper. The new angle changed everything. He hit something inside her that made her vision blur, made her thighs shake, made her bite her lip hard enough to taste copper.
"Feel that?" His voice was rough, breathless. "That's what you get for coming down here alone."
She hated that her body responded. Hated that her walls clenched around him, that moisture slicked her thighs, that a moan escaped her throat when he thrust deep enough to hit that spot again. He noticed, of course he did, and his rhythm changed, became slower, more deliberate, grinding against that place with each stroke.
The pressure built despite herself. A coiling tension in her belly that spread lower, tighter, unbearable. She tried to fight it, tried to keep her mind on the rifles upstairs, the ammunition, the maps she'd hidden in her pack. But her body betrayed her, her hips moving without her permission, pushing back against him, seeking more.
He reached around her, his fingers finding the swollen bud of her clit, and that was the end. She shattered, her orgasm crashing through her with a force that made her legs buckle. Her walls spasmed around him, clenching and releasing, and she heard him curse under his breath as her body milked him.
His rhythm faltered, became erratic, desperate. He slammed into her twice more, three times, each thrust grinding deep, and then he buried himself fully and held, his own release pulsing hot inside her. He groaned, a low, guttural sound, his fingers bruising her hips as he rode out the final waves.
For a moment, neither of them moved. The only sounds were their ragged breathing and the distant drip of water somewhere in the basement. Then he pulled out, the sudden emptiness making Kara wince. She felt his release trickle down her thigh, cooling quickly in the basement air.
He zipped his pants with casual indifference, already turning away. "Not bad for a settlement girl." He said. "Get dressed. And remember, I never saw you."
Kara pulled her clothes back on, her movements mechanical. Her thighs trembled. Her cheek stung where the concrete had scraped it raw. She didn't look at him, didn't speak. She walked out of the room, past the other raiders who watched her with a mixture of amusement and contempt, and climbed the stairs back to the warehouse floor.
The team was still gathering supplies, oblivious to what had happened below. Kara slipped back into the armory, her hands still shaking, and finished packing the rifles and ammunition. She added a box of old military flares, a compass, and a map of the region that showed old supply caches and safe routes.
When she emerged, Landon was watching her. "Find anything useful?"
Kara met his eyes, her expression blank. "Enough to make the trip worthwhile."
He nodded, apparently satisfied. "Load up. We're heading back in ten."
On the ride back to the settlement, Kara sat in the corner of the truck bed, her pack clutched to her chest. The sun was setting, painting the wastes in shades of orange and red. She watched the ruins pass by, each one a reminder of the world that had been lost.
Her body ached in ways she didn't want to examine. Her skin was raw, her thighs sore, and she could still feel the phantom grip of his hands on her hips. But beneath the pain, something else was growing. A cold, hard certainty. She had survived. She had gathered the tools she needed. And she had proven to herself that she could do whatever it took to escape.
The settlement gates opened, and the truck rolled inside. Kara climbed down, her legs unsteady, and walked toward her quarters without looking back. In her pack, hidden beneath the bandages and canned food, were the keys to her freedom.
All she needed now was the right moment to use them.
Fracture
The knock came at dawn. Three sharp raps that pulled Kara from a restless sleep. She knew that rhythm. Official. Authoritative. Captain Lareman's preferred announcement of his presence.
She sat up on the thin mattress, her body still aching from the expedition. The bruises on her thighs had turned purple and yellow, mementos from the waste runner she'd distracted while Landon scavenged the old medical supply depot. Worth it. She'd hidden the antibiotics and surgical kits beneath a loose floorboard in the storage shed. Two more weeks of careful gathering and she'd have enough supplies to survive the journey north.
The door swung open before she could stand. Lareman filled the frame, his shaved head gleaming in the weak morning light. Behind him stood two guards she didn't recognize. Their faces were hard, their hands resting on the batons at their belts.
"Get dressed," Lareman said. His voice carried no emotion, but his eyes held something she hadn't seen before. Triumph.
"I need a minute." Kara pulled the blanket up, covering her nakedness. "I'll report for duty at the usual time."
"You won't be reporting for duty today. Get dressed. Now."
A cold weight settled in her stomach. She reached for her clothes, moving slowly, watching the guards for any clue. They gave nothing away. Their gazes remained fixed on the wall behind her, deliberately not looking at her body. That was worse than if they'd been staring. It meant they were under strict orders.
Lareman led her through the compound in silence. The morning patrols stepped aside as they passed, their eyes following her with a mixture of curiosity and wariness. Word traveled fast in settlements like this. Rumors spread like infection. She'd been careful, so careful, but she'd also been desperate.
The administration building stood at the center of the compound, a converted school that still bore faded letters above the entrance. "Knowledge is Power." The irony wasn't lost on her as they marched her inside.
Lareman stopped at a door on the second floor. He unlocked it with a key from his belt, a privilege she'd never been granted. The room inside was sparse. A metal desk. Two chairs. A filing cabinet in the corner. And on the desk, spread out like evidence at a trial, were her supplies.
The antibiotics. The surgical kits. The map she'd drawn on scavenged paper, marking patrol routes and weak points in the fence. The cache of protein bars she'd been hoarding. All of it laid out in neat rows.
Kara's knees went weak. She grabbed the doorframe to steady herself.
"Sit." Lareman pointed at the chair across from the desk.
She sat. Her mind raced through possibilities. Denial. Deflection. Bargaining. But she knew, looking at the evidence, that none of those would work. Someone had talked. Someone had sold her out.
"I'm going to give you one chance," Lareman said, lowering himself into the chair behind the desk. "One chance to tell me who helped you. Landon. The woman Nadia. The trader from the eastern settlement. Give me a name, and I'll make your punishment quick."
Kara's throat tightened. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Don't." Lareman leaned forward, his scarred face inches from hers. "Don't insult my intelligence. You've been planning this for weeks. Gathering supplies. Mapping the perimeter. Making friends with the wrong people. Did you think I wouldn't notice?"
"I was just trying to survive." The words came out before she could stop them. "The rations aren't enough. I needed extra supplies for the winter."
"The winter." Lareman laughed, a harsh sound that didn't reach his eyes. "You're planning to leave before winter. The route you marked leads north, to the old research stations. You think there's something there. A cure. A safe zone. Salvation." He spat the last word like poison. "There's nothing out there but death. I've seen it. I've buried the ones who tried."
Kara said nothing. Her hands trembled in her lap. She pressed them against her thighs to still them.
"But you don't believe me," Lareman continued. "You think you're smarter than everyone else. That you can find what we couldn't. That your fancy degree and your big city ideas make you better than us." He stood, circling the desk. "They don't. They make you a liability."
He stopped behind her chair. She felt his breath on the back of her neck.
"The contract you signed says escape attempts are punishable by expulsion. You know what that means. Out the gates with nothing. No supplies. No weapons. Just you and the wastes."
Kara closed her eyes. She'd seen what happened to people who were expelled. The wastes didn't kill quickly. They killed slowly, over days, as dehydration and radiation and the things that lurked in the shadows took their toll.
"But I'm willing to offer an alternative." Lareman's hand landed on her shoulder, heavy and possessive. "You've been a useful asset. The men like you. You're cooperative, most of the time. And you've got skills we can use. Medical knowledge. Research experience. I'd hate to waste that."
Her eyes opened. She knew what was coming before he said it.
"Tonight. The recreation hall. You'll serve the entire night shift. All of them." His fingers dug into her shoulder. "Think of it as a reorientation. A reminder of where you belong. After that, we're even. You go back to your regular duties. But if you try to run again, there won't be a second chance. You'll be out the gates before you can blink."
Kara's stomach churned. The night shift. Twelve guards. Twelve men who'd been watching her for weeks, who'd heard rumors about her encounters, who'd wondered what it would be like to have their turn.
"I have a choice?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"You always have a choice." Lareman circled back to the desk. "You can choose the recreation hall. Or you can choose the wastes."
She sat in silence, the weight of the decision pressing down on her chest. Every instinct screamed at her to fight, to run, to refuse. But she'd seen the wastes. She knew what waited beyond the fence. And she knew, with a certainty that cut through her fear, that she wasn't ready to die.
Not yet.
"The recreation hall," she said. The words tasted like ash.
Lareman smiled. It was the first genuine expression she'd seen on his face, and it made her skin crawl. "Good choice. I'll have someone bring you dinner. You'll need your strength."
He dismissed the guards and left her alone in the room with her confiscated supplies. She sat there for a long time, staring at the map she'd drawn, at the careful lines and annotations that represented weeks of planning. All of it wasted. All of it gone because someone had decided her freedom wasn't worth their silence.
She thought about Landon. About the way he'd looked at her during the expedition, his eyes hungry and calculating. He'd helped her gather the supplies. He'd known what she was planning. And he'd been quiet about it, too quiet, which should have been her first warning.
Or maybe it was Nadia. The jaded woman who'd warned her about the settlement's true nature. Who'd told her that resistance was futile, that the only way to survive was to surrender completely. Maybe she'd reported Kara to prove her loyalty. To buy herself more time.
It didn't matter. Whoever it was, the damage was done. Her plan was in ruins. And tonight, she would pay for her ambition in the only currency the settlement accepted.
The hours passed in a blur. A guard brought her dinner, a bowl of thin stew and a piece of hard bread. She ate without tasting, forcing the food down because she knew she'd need the energy. She drank water until her stomach ached. She used the bathroom in the corner of the room, not caring about the lack of privacy.
At sunset, two guards came for her. They led her to the recreation hall, a converted gymnasium with faded basketball lines still visible on the floor. The room had been prepared. Mattresses laid out in a circle. Bottles of homemade alcohol on a table in the corner. Lanterns hung from the ceiling, casting long shadows across the space.
The guards were already there. Twelve of them, ranging from young men barely out of their teens to weathered veterans with gray in their beards. They stood in loose clusters, talking quietly, their eyes following her as she entered.
Lareman stood at the center of the room. He'd changed into a clean shirt, and his hair was damp, as if he'd washed it for the occasion. "Good. You're here." He gestured to the mattresses. "Strip. Slowly."
Kara's hands moved to the buttons of her shirt. She unfastened them one by one, her fingers clumsy with fear. The fabric parted, revealing the pale skin of her stomach, the curve of her breasts beneath a worn bra. She shrugged the shirt from her shoulders and let it fall to the floor. Her hands went to the clasp of her bra, fumbling with the hook before it came free. She slipped the straps down her arms, her breasts falling heavy and bare, the nipples tightening in the cool air.
She reached for her pants, pushing them down over her hips. Her underwear followed. She stood naked in the center of the room, twelve pairs of eyes on her body. The lantern light painted her skin in shades of amber and gold, catching the curve of her hips, the dark triangle between her thighs, the soft swell of her breasts.
"Turn around," Lareman said. "Let them see what they're getting."
She turned, a slow rotation that felt like it took hours. She could feel their gazes on her skin, hot and hungry. The round cheeks of her ass caught the light as she pivoted, and she heard one of the guards inhale sharply. Some of them were already hard, their arousal visible through their pants. Others watched with cold calculation, assessing her like a piece of meat.
"You know the rules," Lareman said, addressing the guards. "No marks. No permanent damage. And you take turns. Anyone who tries to jump the line will answer to me." He turned to Kara. "You'll service them all. However they want. However many times they want. You don't stop until I say you can stop."
Kara nodded. Her throat was too tight for words.
"Good." Lareman stepped back, joining the circle of guards. "You can start with me."
He didn't undress. He simply unfastened his pants and let them fall to his ankles, his erection jutting out from his body. He was thick, heavily veined, the head already glistening with pre-cum. His balls hung heavy beneath his shaft, the skin dark and tight.
Kara dropped to her knees. The concrete floor was cold against her bare skin. She reached for him, her hand wrapping around the base of his shaft. He was warm, almost hot, and she could feel him pulse against her palm. She stroked him slowly, feeling the rigid flesh respond to her touch, growing even harder as she worked her fist up and down his length.
She leaned forward and took him in her mouth.
He tasted like salt and sweat and something metallic. She focused on the mechanics, on the rhythm she'd learned over the past weeks. Deep breaths. Relax her throat. Use her tongue. Don't think about who he was or what he represented. Just survive.
She swirled her tongue around the head, lapping at the pre-cum that leaked from the tip. The fluid was salty, slick against her tongue. She took him deeper, her lips sliding down his shaft until she felt him press against the back of her throat. She suppressed the urge to gag, breathing through her nose as she held him there, feeling him throb against her tongue.
Lareman's hand landed on the back of her head, guiding her pace. "That's it. Nice and slow. Show them how well you've been trained."
She pulled back, then took him deep again, establishing a rhythm. Her jaw ached from the stretch of him, but she maintained the pace, sliding her mouth up and down his length. She cupped his balls with her free hand, rolling them gently in her palm, feeling their weight.
She heard murmurs from the other guards. Appreciative sounds. Comments about her technique. Someone said something about her mouth, about how it looked wrapped around Lareman's cock. She blocked them out, focusing on the task at hand. On the weight of him on her tongue. On the sounds he made as she worked him toward completion.
Lareman's breathing grew ragged. His hips began to move, thrusting forward to meet her mouth. She felt his hand tighten in her hair, pulling her head down, forcing himself deeper. She relaxed her throat as much as she could, letting him use her, feeling him slide past her tonsils and into the tight channel of her throat.
He came with a grunt, his hips thrusting forward as he emptied himself into her mouth. The first pulse hit the back of her throat, hot and thick. She swallowed, feeling his seed coat her tongue and slide down her throat in sticky waves. He pulsed again, and again, each spurt filling her mouth with the bitter taste of his release. She swallowed, not because she wanted to, but because she knew it would please him. He pulled out, his softening cock leaving a trail of saliva and cum across her chin.
"Next," Lareman said, stepping back and refastening his pants. "Make sure she's ready for you."
The next guard stepped forward. Younger, with a runner's build and eager eyes. He was already naked, his erection bobbing as he walked. His cock was thinner than Lareman's but longer, the head flushed and angry. He didn't wait for her to take the lead. He grabbed her by the hair, pulling her head back, and shoved himself into her mouth.
Kara gagged. He was too deep, too fast, but he didn't slow down. He fucked her face with brutal efficiency, his hips slapping against her lips as he used her like a toy. She could feel the head of his cock hitting the back of her throat with each thrust, making her eyes water. She focused on breathing through her nose, on keeping her teeth out of the way, on surviving the next thirty seconds.
He reached down and grabbed her breast, squeezing it hard, pinching her nipple between his fingers. The pain made her gasp around his cock, and he groaned at the sensation. "That's it," he said. "Make some noise."
He finished quickly, pulling out and spraying his release across her chest. The warm liquid splashed against her breasts, running down her stomach in white rivulets. It pooled in the hollow of her collarbone, dripping from her nipples onto the concrete floor.
"Clean yourself up," the guard said, laughing. "You're a mess."
Kara wiped at her chest with trembling hands. The cum smeared across her skin, making everything worse. She looked up at the circle of guards, at the faces watching her with varying degrees of hunger and amusement. There were ten more. Ten more men who would use her body however they wanted.
The third guard wanted her on her hands and knees. He positioned himself behind her, his hands gripping her hips as he lined himself up with her entrance. She was wet, her body responding despite her mind's rejection. He groaned as he pushed inside, her slick walls parting around his girth.
"Fuck, she's tight," he said to the room. "Wet, too. Look at this."
He pulled out slowly, his cock glistening with her arousal, then drove back in with one hard thrust. Kara gasped, her back arching as he filled her completely. He set a steady pace, his hips slapping against her ass with each stroke, his balls swinging forward to brush against her clit.
She closed her eyes and let her mind drift, retreating to a place deep inside herself where none of this could touch her. She thought about the research stations to the north. About the clean rooms and the sterile equipment and the promise of a life that made sense. She thought about the papers she'd published before the collapse, the conferences she'd spoken at, the respect she'd commanded. All of it gone now, replaced by this. By the feeling of a stranger's cock sliding in and out of her body while a dozen men watched.
The guard's rhythm quickened. His fingers dug into her hips hard enough to leave bruises. She felt him lean forward, his chest pressing against her back, his breath hot on her neck. One hand released her hip and reached around to cup her breast, squeezing and pulling at her nipple.
"You like that?" he whispered in her ear. "You like being fucked like this?"
She didn't answer. She couldn't. But her body betrayed her, her inner walls clenching around him as he thrust deeper. He laughed, feeling her response, and increased his pace.
He came inside her, his seed hot and wet against her walls. She felt him pulse, felt the warmth spread through her core as he filled her. He pulled out, and she felt it trickle down her thigh, mixing with the sweat and saliva and cum that already coated her skin.
"She's ready for more," the guard said, stepping back. "Tight as a fist, that one."
The fourth guard wanted her on her back. He spread her legs wide, exposing her to the room, and lowered himself between them. She could feel the cum from the previous guard leaking from her opening, slick and warm against her thighs. The new guard didn't seem to mind. He rubbed the head of his cock against her slick entrance, coating himself in the mixture of fluids, then pushed inside.
He was gentler than the others, his movements almost tender as he entered her. He looked into her eyes as he thrust, and she saw something there that made her stomach clench. Pity. He pitied her.
That was worse than the brutality. Worse than the casual cruelty of the others. Because it meant he saw her as a victim. As someone to be pitied. And she couldn't let herself believe that. She couldn't let herself break.
He reached between their bodies, his thumb finding her clit. He rubbed it in slow circles as he fucked her, and despite herself, she felt her body respond. Warmth gathered in her core, spreading outward. Her breath hitched. Her nipples hardened. She hated him for it, hated the way her body betrayed her, but she couldn't stop the response.
She turned her head away, staring at the faded basketball lines on the floor. The lines were straight, orderly, predictable. She traced them with her eyes as the guard moved inside her, counting the seconds until it was over.
One Mississippi. Two Mississippi. Three Mississippi.
He finished with a soft groan, pulling out and rolling off her. His cum joined the rest, leaking from her swollen entrance. She lay there, legs still spread, staring at the ceiling. The lantern light flickered, casting dancing shadows across the gymnasium walls.
"Get up," Lareman said. "You're not done yet."
Kara pushed herself to her feet. Her legs were shaking. Her body was covered in a sheen of sweat and other fluids. She could feel the cum leaking from between her thighs, running down her legs in warm rivulets.
The fifth guard wanted her mouth again. He sat on the edge of a mattress and made her kneel between his legs. He was thick and uncircumcised, the head peeking out from beneath the foreskin as she took him in her hand. She pulled the skin back, exposing the glossy tip, and ran her tongue around it. He groaned, his hand resting on the back of her head.
She took him into her mouth, working him with her hand and lips together. She could taste the salt of his pre-cum, feel the pulse of blood beneath the thin skin. He didn't force himself on her like the second guard had. He let her set the pace, his hips moving gently as she worked him toward completion.
When he came, he warned her. "I'm going to finish," he said, his voice tight. She didn't pull away. She took his release in her mouth, swallowing it down, feeling the warmth spread through her throat. He stroked her hair as she cleaned him with her tongue, gentle and almost grateful.
The sixth guard wanted her from behind again. He bent her over a table, her breasts pressing flat against the cold surface. He entered her roughly, his cock sliding into her cum-slick channel with one thrust. She gasped, gripping the edges of the table as he began to move.
He was large, larger than the others, and each thrust sent a jolt through her body. The table creaked beneath them, the legs scraping against the concrete floor. He grabbed a handful of her hair and pulled her head back, arching her spine, changing the angle of his penetration.
"Take it," he said. "Take all of it."
She did. She had no choice. She felt every inch of him as he drove into her, his hips slapping against her ass, his balls swinging forward to slap against her clit. The wet sounds of their coupling filled the room, obscene and undeniable.
He reached around and pressed his thumb against her asshole. She tensed, but he didn't push inside. Just pressed, a promise of what might come later, a reminder that he could take whatever he wanted. She felt her body respond, her walls clenching around his cock, and he groaned in pleasure.
He came with a final, brutal thrust, burying himself deep inside her. She felt him pulse, felt the warmth of his release flooding her channel. He held himself there for a long moment, his weight pressing her against the table, before he finally pulled out.
The seventh guard had her bend over the same table. He was rougher, taking her with punishing thrusts that left her gasping. His hands gripped her waist hard enough to leave marks, his fingers digging into her flesh as he used her. He reached beneath her and squeezed her breasts, pulling and pinching her nipples until she cried out.
"That's it," he said. "Let me hear you."
He fucked her harder, driven by the sound of her voice. Each thrust pushed her forward on the table, the edge biting into her hips. She felt the wetness of multiple loads sliding down her thighs, the obscene squelch of her body accepting him.
He finished inside her, adding his seed to the others. When he pulled out, she felt empty for a moment, her body open and used. Then the eighth guard stepped forward.
The eighth made her ride him. He lay on a mattress, his cock standing erect, and made her straddle him. She lowered herself onto him, feeling him fill her inch by inch. Her thighs burned from the effort, her muscles screaming with exhaustion, but she moved, rising and falling on his shaft as his hands gripped her hips.
He reached up and cupped her breasts, thumbs rolling over her nipples. "Look at me," he said. "Look at me while you ride my cock."
She met his gaze, her face expressionless, her body moving on autopilot. She could feel the cum inside her, slick and warm, making each movement easier. The sounds of their bodies meeting filled the room, wet and rhythmic.
He pulled her down against his chest and wrapped his arms around her, holding her close as he thrust up into her. The position was intimate, almost lover-like, and that was the cruelest part. He kissed her neck, her shoulder, her jaw. She felt his breath against her skin, hot and ragged.
He came with a groan, his hips jerking upward, his arms tightening around her. She felt him pulse inside her, felt the warmth of his release. He held her there for a long moment, his breathing gradually slowing, before he finally released her.
By the ninth guard, she'd lost track. His face blurred with the others. His body felt the same as the ones before. She moved on autopilot, her mind detached from her body, watching from a distance as a woman who looked like her serviced a line of men.
He took her from behind, bending her over the mattress. She felt his cock slide into her, felt the familiar rhythm of his thrusts. He didn't last long. None of them did, after the first few. The excitement, the audience, the sight of her body beneath them, it pushed them over the edge quickly.
He pulled out and came on her back, the warm liquid splashing across her spine and dripping down onto the mattress. She stayed where she was, face down, ass up, waiting for the next one.
The tenth guard was Landon.
She didn't recognize him at first. He stepped forward, and something about his posture made her look up. His face was flushed, his eyes avoiding hers. He looked ashamed.
"You," she said. The word came out flat, empty.
"I didn't have a choice." His voice was rough, defensive. "Lareman found out. He would've killed me if I didn't tell him everything."
"So you sold me out."
"I sold myself out." He grabbed her arm, pulling her close. "You think I wanted this? You think I wanted to watch them all fuck you before I got my turn?"
Kara stared at him. She saw the guilt in his eyes, the shame. But she also saw the hunger. The same hunger that had been there since the first moment they'd met. He wanted her. And now he had an excuse to take her.
"Just get it over with," she said.
He did. He took her on the mattress, his movements rough and desperate. He kissed her neck, her breasts, her mouth, trying to find some connection that wasn't there. She lay still beneath him, letting him use her, feeling nothing but the cold weight of betrayal.
His cock slid into her cum-slick channel, and she felt him groan against her neck. "God, you feel good," he whispered. "I've wanted this for so long."
She said nothing. She stared at the ceiling, counting the lanterns, waiting for it to end. He thrust into her with increasing urgency, his hips moving faster, his breathing growing ragged. She felt his hands on her breasts, his fingers twisting her nipples, his mouth trailing wet kisses across her skin.
He came with a shudder, collapsing on top of her. His breath was hot against her ear. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "I'm so sorry."
She didn't answer. She pushed him off and stood, her body aching, her mind numb. Two more guards. Two more men who would take their turn with her body.
The eleventh guard was quick. He took her mouth, fucking her face with short, urgent thrusts. He came in less than a minute, pulling out and shooting his load across her lips and chin. She wiped it away with the back of her hand, barely registering the taste.
The twelfth was slow, drawing out every moment. He made her lie on her back and spread her legs. He entered her gently, almost reverently, and began to move with long, deliberate strokes. Each thrust was measured, controlled, designed to make her feel every inch of him.
He watched her face as he fucked her, searching for some reaction. She gave him nothing. Her eyes stared past him, fixed on the ceiling, her body limp beneath his. But he didn't seem to mind. He was enjoying himself, savoring the sensation of her body wrapped around him.
He reached down and rubbed her clit, his fingers working the swollen nub in slow circles. Despite herself, she felt her body respond. The warmth gathered in her core again, building slowly. She hated it, hated him, hated the way her body betrayed her. But she couldn't stop it.
Her breath quickened. Her thighs tensed. She felt the orgasm building, unwanted and undeniable. He felt it too, felt her walls clench around him, and he smiled.
"That's it," he said. "Come for me."
She did. She hated herself for it, but her body convulsed around him, her back arching, a gasp escaping her lips. The orgasm crashed through her, intense and unwanted, her inner walls spasming around his cock. He groaned at the sensation, his pace quickening, and came inside her, his seed mixing with the others that already filled her.
He pulled out slowly, watching as his cum leaked from her swollen entrance. He wiped his cock on her thigh and stood, leaving her lying on the mattress, her body trembling with the aftershocks of her unwanted climax.
When it was over, she lay on the mattress, staring at the ceiling. Her body was a landscape of bruises and bite marks and drying cum. Her throat was raw. Her muscles screamed. Her thighs were slick with the evidence of a dozen men's pleasure, her stomach and breasts painted with their release. But she was alive.
Lareman approached, looking down at her with something that might have been satisfaction. "You did well. You'll be sore tomorrow, but you'll live. Get cleaned up. Report for duty at dawn."
He turned and walked away, the guards following him out of the recreation hall. The last one extinguished the lanterns, plunging the room into darkness.
Kara lay there for a long time. The cold seeped into her bones. The darkness pressed against her eyes. She listened to the sound of her own breathing, the only proof that she was still alive.
A crack had formed inside her tonight. She could feel it, a fracture in the foundation of her self. The part of her that had believed she could escape, that she could outsmart them, that she could hold onto some piece of her old identity. That part was gone now, shattered by the weight of twelve men and her own desperate need to survive.
But something else had formed in its place. Something harder. Colder. She thought about Landon's betrayal, about the way he'd sold her out to save himself. She thought about Lareman's satisfaction, the way he'd watched her break. She thought about the guards who'd used her, who'd taken their pleasure from her pain.
She would remember them. All of them. She would remember their faces, their names, their weaknesses. And when the time came, when she finally found a way out of this place, she would make sure they remembered her too.
Kara pushed herself to her feet. Her body screamed in protest, but she ignored it. She found a bucket of water in the corner and began to clean herself, scrubbing away the evidence of what she'd endured. The water turned pink with blood and cum. She didn't care.
She dressed slowly, her fingers clumsy with exhaustion. The clothes stuck to her damp skin, but she didn't bother adjusting them. She walked out of the recreation hall and into the night, the cold air biting at her face.
The settlement was quiet. The guards were in their quarters, sleeping off their satisfaction. The civilians were locked in their homes, dreaming of a world that no longer existed. Kara walked through the empty streets, her footsteps echoing in the silence.
She stopped at the fence, looking out at the wastes beyond. The darkness stretched to the horizon, broken only by the faint glow of distant ruins. Somewhere out there was freedom. Somewhere out there was a life that didn't require her to sacrifice her body for the privilege of breathing.
She would find it. She would find it if it killed her.
But first, she would learn. She would watch. She would wait. She would become whatever she needed to become to survive. And when the moment came, she would be ready.
Kara turned away from the fence and walked back to her quarters. She lay down on the thin mattress and closed her eyes. She didn't sleep. She couldn't. But she rested, conserving her strength for the days ahead.
Tomorrow, she would report for duty at dawn. She would smile at the guards and speak in soft tones and pretend that nothing had changed. She would be the compliant little asset they expected her to be.
But inside, she would be planning. Calculating. Waiting.
And when they least expected it, she would strike.
Final Transaction
The pre-dawn air bit through Kara's thin jacket as she pressed herself against the wall of the supply shed. Three days of preparation had led to this. Three nights of careful lies and whispered promises. Now everything hinged on the next hour.
She checked the pocket watch Landon had stolen for her. Half past five. Lareman would be making his rounds soon, alone, as he always did before the day shift took over.
Her hand drifted to the small pouch at her hip. Inside sat a forged travel permit, a map to a free settlement Nadia had described, and a single dose of sedative she'd bartered from the infirmary. Enough to buy her time if things went wrong.
"You're really doing this," Landon's voice came from behind her.
She didn't flinch. She'd heard his footsteps fifty yards away. "I told you I would."
"Doesn't mean I believed you." He stepped closer, his rough hand finding her waist. "You sure about the captain? He's not like the others."
"I know." Kara turned to face him. "That's why it has to be him."
Landon's jaw tightened. Something flickered in his eyes. She couldn't read him anymore. Their transactions had blurred the lines between them, but she'd never let herself forget what he was. A tool. A means to an end.
"Just get me to the gate after," she said. "That's all I need from you."
"And if I want more?"
She met his gaze. "Then you'll have to find another girl to trade with. I'm done."
The words felt strange on her tongue. Strange and powerful.
Landon held her stare for a long moment, then nodded. "Fine. I'll be at the south entrance. You've got twenty minutes after the captain's bell before the shift change. Don't be late."
He melted back into the shadows, and Kara was alone again.
She waited.
The settlement stirred around her. A generator hummed. Somewhere a door creaked open. The smells of smoke and unwashed bodies drifted on the wind. She'd memorized every scent, every sound, every face in this place. She'd paid for that knowledge with her body. Now she'd use it to buy her freedom.
Lareman's footsteps came a few minutes before the hour. Right on schedule.
Kara stepped out of the shadows and into his path.
The captain stopped, his hand going to his sidearm before recognition dawned. "Brent. What are you doing out here?"
"Waiting for you." She kept her voice steady, her posture open. "I need to talk to you. Privately."
His eyes narrowed. "Talk."
"About my contract. About extending it."
Lareman's expression didn't change, but she saw the shift in his posture. The slight relaxation of his shoulders. The way his gaze traveled down her body and back up.
"You've been trouble since the day you arrived," he said. "Why would I want more of that?"
"Because I've learned my place." Kara stepped closer. Close enough to smell the stale coffee on his breath. "I've learned what happens when I fight. I don't want to fight anymore."
She reached out and touched his chest. Lightly. Questioningly.
His hand caught her wrist. "You think I'm stupid?"
"No. I think you're practical." She didn't pull away. "I'm offering you something the others don't have. Full compliance. No games. No resistance. In exchange for a better assignment. Something with more freedom."
"Freedom." He laughed, but it was hollow. "There's no freedom here. There's only service."
"Then let me serve you. Directly."
The words hung in the air between them. Kara watched his face, reading the calculations behind his eyes. He was suspicious. He was also tempted. She'd learned enough about men in this place to know which impulse usually won.
"And what would that involve?" he asked.
"Whatever you want." She let her voice drop. "No more rotations. No more sharing. Just you."
Lareman studied her for a long moment. Then he released her wrist and gestured toward the administrative building. "We'll discuss this in my office."
Kara followed him, her heart pounding but her face calm. The first step was the hardest. She'd just taken it.
His office was small and cluttered, filled with the detritus of authority. A battered desk dominated the center of the room, while a narrow cot occupied the corner. Filing cabinets overflowed with contracts and reports. The air hung heavy with old sweat and stale tobacco.
Lareman locked the door behind them.
"Strip," he said.
Kara obeyed. She'd done this so many times now that the motions felt automatic. Jacket off. Shirt over her head. Pants pooling at her ankles. She stood before him in the cold morning air, wearing nothing but the scars she'd collected in this place.
Lareman circled her slowly. His fingers traced the line of her spine, the curve of her hip. "You've got marks. The other guards were rough with you."
"It doesn't matter."
"It matters to me." His hand stopped at her waist. "I don't like damaged goods."
Kara forced herself not to react. "I'm not damaged. I'm adaptable."
"Adaptable." He chuckled. "That's one word for it."
He moved to stand in front of her, his body blocking the weak light from the window. "You want to serve me directly. Fine. But I need to know you mean it. I need to know you're not planning something."
"I'm not planning anything."
"Prove it."
His hand went to his belt. Kara watched him unbuckle it, watched his pants fall open. She'd been with so many men now that the sight barely registered. Another body. Another transaction.
She knelt.
This time, it was different. This time, she was choosing it. Not because she had to, but because she needed to. The distinction mattered. It was the only thing keeping her sane.
Lareman's hand found her hair, gripping it tightly as she took him into her mouth. He was thick and heavy on her tongue, and she focused on the mechanics of the act. She started slow, swirling her tongue around the head, tasting the salt of him before taking him deeper. She established a rhythm, working him with practiced strokes while her hand wrapped around the base where her mouth couldn't reach.
"Look at me," he ordered.
She raised her eyes to his.
"That's better." His grip tightened in her hair. "I want to see your face when you do this. I want to remember it."
Kara didn't look away. She kept her eyes locked on his as she worked, her tongue tracing patterns she'd learned through trial and error. She swirled around the crown, then flattened her tongue against the underside as she took him deeper, feeling him hit the back of her throat. She suppressed her gag reflex, breathing through her nose, and pushed further still until her lips pressed against the root of him.
His breath hitched. She pulled back slowly, maintaining eye contact, then took him deep again. Every guard had taught her something. Every encounter had added to her collection of skills. Now she deployed them all, one after another, watching his breathing quicken, his composure crack. She varied her pace, alternating between long slow strokes and quick shallow ones, using her hand in tandem with her mouth, twisting her wrist on the upstroke.
"Enough," he said finally, pulling her up by her hair. "On the desk."
She climbed onto the cold surface, lying back as he positioned himself between her legs. The paper edges bit into her skin. She didn't complain.
Lareman didn't bother with preparation. He pushed into her without warning, and she gasped despite herself. The stretch burned. He was thick, and she wasn't ready, but she'd learned to take discomfort. She'd learned to let her body accept what was given.
He was rougher than she'd expected, his movements driven by something deeper than pleasure. She felt the need to break her completely in every thrust. She let him. She let him take what he wanted, let him use her body as a battleground for his own insecurities. She gave him nothing real. Only the illusion of submission.
His hips snapped against hers, driving deep. The desk rattled with each impact. She wrapped her legs around him, not because she wanted to pull him closer, but because it was expected. Because it made the performance more convincing. She made the sounds she knew men wanted to hear, soft gasps and moans timed to his rhythm.
But somewhere in the middle of it, something shifted.
His rhythm changed. Slowed. His hand came up to cup her face, and for a moment, he looked almost human.
"I could keep you," he said. "Forever."
"No." The word escaped before she could stop it.
His eyes hardened. "No?"
"I mean..." She scrambled for control. "I mean, that's not what I'm asking for. Just an assignment. Just a chance to prove myself."
Lareman studied her for a long moment. Then he started moving again, faster this time, harder. She felt the desk shake beneath her, heard papers scatter across the floor. He grabbed her hips and flipped her over, pulling her to the edge of the desk so she was bent over it, her cheek pressed against cold wood and scattered forms.
He drove back into her from behind, the new angle hitting something different inside her. She bit her lip to keep from crying out. Not from pleasure, but from the intensity of it. His hand pressed between her shoulder blades, pinning her down while his other hand gripped her hip hard enough to bruise.
"This is what service looks like," he said, his voice rough. "You understand that?"
"Yes," she breathed.
"Say it."
"I understand."
He pounded into her with renewed intensity, and she felt him growing harder inside her, if that was possible. The desk scraped against the floor with each thrust. She gripped the edges, steadying herself, letting him use her however he needed to. Her body was a tool. She'd accepted that long ago.
When he finished, he pulled away without ceremony. "Get dressed."
Kara's hands trembled as she gathered her clothes. She'd almost lost control. Almost let him see the real plan. But she'd recovered. She was still in the game.
Lareman was buttoning his pants when she finished dressing. "I'll consider your proposal. Report to me tomorrow at noon. I'll have my answer then."
"I need it sooner."
He turned, eyebrows raised. "Excuse me?"
"I need it today. The day shift assignment board closes at noon. If I'm not on it, I'll be stuck with night rotations for another month." She met his gaze steadily. "I can't survive another month like this."
Lareman's expression was unreadable. "You're asking a lot."
"I'm offering a lot."
He was quiet for a long moment. Then he crossed to his desk, pulled out a form, and began writing.
Kara watched his pen move across the paper, her heart hammering in her chest. This was it. The final piece.
"Here." He handed her the form. "Take this to the gate guard. It assigns you to perimeter patrol. Day shift. You'll report directly to me."
She took the paper with steady hands. "Thank you."
"Don't thank me yet. You still have to prove yourself."
"I will." She turned toward the door. "I'll see you at noon."
The morning air hit her face like a blessing as she stepped outside. She clutched the form in her hands, forcing herself to walk normally, to not run.
The south entrance was a hundred yards away. Landon would be waiting. The gate would be open for the supply run.
She made it fifty yards before someone called her name.
"Kara."
Nadia stepped out from behind a storage container, her face drawn and pale. "You're really leaving."
It wasn't a question.
"I have to."
"I know." Nadia pressed something into her hand. A small pouch. "Supplies. Water. Some dried meat. It's not much."
"Why are you helping me?"
Nadia smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes. "Because someone has to get out. Someone has to prove it's possible."
"I'll send word. When I find somewhere safe."
"Don't." Nadia shook her head. "Just go. And don't look back."
Kara wanted to say more, but there wasn't time. She squeezed Nadia's hand once, then continued toward the gate.
Landon was there, just as he'd promised. He took one look at the form in her hand and nodded.
"Perimeter patrol, huh? Clever."
"I learned from the best."
"Flattery won't get you anywhere." But he was smiling. "Come on. The truck's ready."
The gate loomed ahead of them. Two guards stood watch, their rifles slung lazily over their shoulders. They glanced at Kara, then at the form she held out.
"Perimeter patrol reassignment," she said. "Captain's orders."
The guard took the paper, examined it, then handed it back. "You're cleared. Truck leaves in five."
Kara climbed into the back of the supply truck, her heart pounding so hard she could barely breathe. Landon climbed in beside her.
"You don't have to come," she said.
"I know." He settled against the metal wall. "But I've been in that place for three years. I think it's time for a change of scenery."
The truck engine rumbled to life. The gate began to open.
And Kara watched the walls of the settlement grow smaller in the distance, her body still aching from the morning's encounter, her mind already planning the next step.
She was free.
But she would never be the same.
The wasteland stretched before her, empty and vast and full of possibility. She didn't know what she'd find out there. Didn't know if she'd survive the week.
But for the first time in months, she was choosing her own path.
And that was worth everything.
