The Arrival
Frank pushed open the apartment door with his shoulder, backpack slung low and keys jingling in his hand. The familiar scent of stale pizza and Ben's cologne hit him first, but something else lingered underneath. Something floral and sharp, like expensive perfume mixed with control. He froze in the entryway, eyes adjusting to the dim light.
Marcela was already there. She stood in the middle of the living room like she owned it, tall frame relaxed against the arm of the couch. Her long dark hair was pulled back, green eyes scanning the space with a quiet satisfaction. At 5'10 she seemed to fill every inch, athletic curves wrapped in a fitted black tank and jeans that hugged her hips. Boxes sat half-unpacked around her, but the place already felt rearranged. Frank's gaming chair had been shoved aside. His stack of textbooks now sat neatly on a shelf he never used.
"You're home late," Marcela said without looking up. Her voice carried that low, mocking edge Ben had warned him about. "I was starting to think you'd skipped out on meeting your new roommate."
Frank's stomach tightened. "Ben said you were moving in today. I didn't expect everything to be... done already." He dropped his bag by the door and stepped inside, trying not to stare at how his favorite hoodie now hung on the coat rack beside her leather jacket.
She finally turned those piercing eyes on him. A slow smile curved her full lips. "I don't waste time. Your room's still yours, but I took the liberty of clearing some space in the kitchen. You boys had a lot of junk in the way."
He flushed, pale skin warming under her gaze. "That's... fine. I guess." The words felt small. He hated how easily she made the apartment feel like her territory.
Marcela crossed the room, movements deliberate. She stopped close enough that he caught the scent of her shampoo. "You must be Frank. Ben talks about you. Quiet gamer type. Always buried in that computer. Tells me you like your routines."
"Yeah, something like that." Frank shifted his weight, hands sliding into his pockets. He wanted to ask her to move back a step but the words stuck. Her presence pressed in, unsettling in a way that made his pulse jump.
She tilted her head, studying him. "Cute. Messy hair, boyish face. You look like you flush easy. That true?"
Heat crept up his neck. "I don't know what you mean."
"Don't play dumb. It's written all over you." Marcela laughed softly, the sound low and knowing. She reached past him to flick on a lamp, her arm brushing his shoulder. "Relax. I'm not here to bite. Not yet, anyway."
Frank stepped back, heart thudding. He told himself it was just the surprise of her arrival, the way she'd already claimed the space. Ben had said his sister was going through a rough breakup and needed a place. Temporary. Nothing to overthink.
She moved to the kitchen counter and started unpacking a box of dishes, but her attention stayed on him. "Tell me about yourself, Frank. Straight out of college soon, right? Got a girlfriend tucked away somewhere?"
"No girlfriend," he said, too quick. He cleared his throat. "Just focusing on classes. And work. Nothing special."
"No one special? That's a shame. A boy your age should have some fun." She set a plate down with a soft clink, eyes flicking over him again. "Or maybe you're the private type. Keeps things close to the chest. I respect that. For now."
The probing felt off, like she was testing cracks in a wall. Frank crossed his arms. "Look, it's cool you're here. But I like my space. Ben and I have a system. Chores rotate, no messing with each other's stuff."
Marcela straightened, smile sharpening. "Systems are good. But they can be improved. Your laundry pile by the couch? That's getting handled tonight. And the dishes in the sink aren't going to wash themselves. Consider it your welcome chore list."
He blinked. "Those are Ben's dishes. I did mine this morning."
"Doesn't matter whose they are. New house, new rules." She said it casually, but the command in her tone left no room. "You'll find I'm good at keeping things orderly. You'll thank me later."
Frank opened his mouth to protest, but she was already moving past him toward the hallway. Her fingers trailed along the wall like she was claiming it. "Your room's down there, right? Second door. I peeked. Cute setup. All those posters. Very... you."
His face burned hotter. "You went in my room?"
"Just a quick look. Don't get dramatic." Marcela paused at the end of the hall, glancing back. "Get those chores done before Ben gets home. He'll appreciate the help settling his big sister in."
She disappeared into what used to be the guest room, now hers, and the door clicked shut. Frank stood frozen, the apartment suddenly too quiet except for the low hum of the fridge. His skin prickled where she'd brushed him. He hated the reaction, the way his body betrayed the irritation twisting in his gut. She was just Ben's sister. Laid-back, like him. This was temporary.
Still, he found himself moving to the sink, hands working through the dishes while his mind replayed her questions. No girlfriend. The way she'd said it, like she already knew the answer. Like she was filing it away.
Hours later the apartment settled into night. Frank finished the last of the chores, muscles tight from the odd tension that lingered. He headed for his room, bare feet quiet on the carpet. The hallway light was off, but a sliver of glow spilled from under Marcela's door. He paused, listening. Nothing.
Then her door opened.
Marcela stepped out, barefoot and changed into a loose tank and shorts that showed the long lines of her legs. She didn't seem surprised to see him. "Late night wanderer. Couldn't sleep?"
"Just heading to bed," Frank muttered. He tried to step around her, but she shifted, blocking the narrow space without touching him.
"You did good with the kitchen. Obedient already. I like that." Her voice dropped lower. "Tell me something, Frank. You ever think about what it would feel like to let someone else take over? Just for a little while. No decisions. No hiding."
His throat went dry. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"You will." She leaned in, close enough that her breath warmed his ear. "I see the way you react. The flush. The little shifts. You're curious, even if you won't admit it. We'll explore that."
Frank's pulse hammered. He wanted to push past her, to laugh it off as weird sister energy, but his feet stayed rooted. "This is Ben's place too. He won't like you messing with his roommate."
Marcela's smile was slow and dangerous. "Ben doesn't need to know everything. Some things stay between us. Our little secret. You'll keep it, won't you?"
Footsteps sounded at the front door. Keys rattled. Ben's voice called out, casual and oblivious. "Hey, anyone home? Van, you settled in?"
Marcela straightened, expression shifting to something lighter, but her eyes stayed locked on Frank. "We'll finish this talk later," she whispered. "Sweet dreams, toy."
She turned toward the living room, leaving Frank standing in the dark hallway, skin hot and mind racing as Ben's footsteps drew closer.
