Awakening in the Sands
Kat Truman wiped sweat from her brow with the back of her hand, the sun hammering down on the excavation trench like it had a personal grudge. Her auburn braids clung damp to her neck, and freckles across her shoulders prickled under the thin cotton shirt. Three weeks at this remote site east of modern Cairo had yielded nothing but sand and frustration, yet she kept digging. Something called to her here, an itch beneath the surface that her scholarly instincts refused to ignore.
Her trowel struck something solid. Not rock. The edge was too smooth, too deliberate. Kat dropped to her knees, heart thudding as she brushed away layers of grit with gloved fingers. An amulet emerged, palm-sized, carved from lapis and gold, its surface etched with symbols that twisted when she looked too long. A scarab at its center pulsed faintly under her touch, warm despite the desert chill creeping in at dusk.
"What are you?" she murmured, lifting it free. The artifact thrummed against her palm, vibrations traveling up her arm like a living heartbeat. She turned it over, tracing the hieroglyphs. They didn't match any dynasty she knew. A low hum built in the air, the sand around her feet shifting as if stirred by an unseen wind.
Light flared. Blinding. Kat gasped, clutching the amulet as the world tilted. Colors bled together, the trench walls dissolving into streaks of gold and shadow. Her body stretched, compressed, every nerve screaming. Then silence. The heat remained, but the air smelled different, thick with incense and river mud. She staggered, knees sinking into finer sand, and opened her eyes to a sky unbroken by modern wires or distant trucks.
Pyramids loomed on the horizon, their edges sharp against a sun that hung lower, redder. Kat's breath caught. This wasn't her dig site. This wasn't her time. Voices rose nearby, chanting in ancient Egyptian, the words rolling over her skin like warm oil. She scrambled up, the amulet still clutched tight, its glow fading but leaving a tingle in her veins.
Warriors crested the dune, spears glinting, linen kilts flapping. They halted at the sight of her, eyes widening. One dropped to his knees, then another. "The Goddess of the Sands," a voice rang out, rough with awe. "She who was promised returns."
Kat backed away, pulse racing. "I'm not... I don't understand." Her words came out in English, but they seemed to understand the intent. More men approached, forming a respectful circle without touching her. Their stares held reverence mixed with something hotter, something that made her skin flush despite the fear.
A taller figure parted the group. Ramses. Even before he spoke, she knew his name, as if the artifact whispered it into her bones. He stood head and shoulders above the others, bronze skin gleaming under a simple kilt edged in gold, dark eyes piercing as they raked over her athletic frame. Muscles shifted under his chest as he stepped forward, a warrior-priest's staff in one hand.
"You bear the mark," he said, voice deep and formal, the accent curling around syllables like a caress. His gaze lingered on the amulet, then lifted to her green eyes. "The eternal one. Our goddess walks among us once more."
Kat swallowed, trying to steady her voice. "I fell through time. This thing... it brought me here. I need to get back." She held out the amulet, but Ramses didn't take it. Instead, he inclined his head, a slow smile touching his lips that didn't reach the command in his eyes.
"The sands do not release what they claim so easily. Come. The priests prepare the ritual. Your arrival demands purification." He extended a hand, palm up, not forcing but expecting. Kat hesitated, her scholar's mind cataloging every detail, the way his body radiated heat even at a distance, the subtle power in his stance. Something in her responded, a low pull she couldn't name.
She placed her hand in his. His fingers closed, firm and warm, guiding her through the dunes toward a cluster of tents near a hidden oasis. Palm trees shaded a pool of clear water, steam rising from heated stones nearby. Attendants, both men and women in simple linens, bowed as they passed.
Inside the largest tent, scented oils filled the air, myrrh and lotus. A large basin of hammered copper stood ready, filled with water that shimmered under lamplight. Ramses released her hand but stayed close, his presence filling the space. "Remove the garments of your foreign time," he instructed, tone instructional, leaving no room for argument. "The goddess must be cleansed of the journey's dust before the rites begin."
Kat's cheeks burned. She was no stranger to fieldwork discomfort, but this felt different, intimate under his steady gaze. Her fingers fumbled with buttons, the shirt sliding from sun-kissed shoulders. Freckles dotted her collarbone, drawing his attention like a magnet. She hesitated at her bra, but his arched brow urged her on. The fabric dropped, baring her breasts to the cooler air. Her nipples tightened, and she fought the urge to cover herself.
Ramses watched without touching, though his eyes darkened. "Continue." The command sent a shiver through her. She kicked off boots and pants, standing nude except for the amulet still around her neck. The attendants approached with cloths and oils, but Ramses waved them back with a gesture. "I will oversee the first washing. Leave us."
They obeyed instantly. Kat stood alone with him, the tent's fabric rustling in a faint breeze. He dipped a linen cloth into the water, wringing it out with deliberate slowness. "Turn," he said. She did, presenting her back. The cloth touched her shoulder, cool at first, then warming as he dragged it down her spine. Each stroke was methodical, thorough, mapping the curve of her waist, the flare of her hips.
Her breath hitched. This wasn't clinical. His free hand steadied her at the elbow, thumb brushing skin in a way that felt possessive. "You tremble," he observed, voice lower now. "The goddess feels the call of the sands, does she not?"
"It's the water," she lied, though her body betrayed her. Heat pooled low in her belly as the cloth moved lower, gliding over the swell of her ass, between her thighs with careful pressure that avoided direct contact yet promised more. She bit her lip, fighting a moan. The amulet warmed against her chest, syncing with the thrum building inside her.
Ramses circled to face her, cloth now at her collarbone. He traced the line of her throat, down between her breasts, the fabric grazing one nipple. Kat's knees weakened. His dark eyes held hers, commanding surrender without a word. "The ritual binds us," he murmured. "Each touch prepares the way. You will learn to yield, goddess, or the time between worlds will claim you forever."
The cloth dipped lower still, over her stomach, pausing at the apex of her thighs. He didn't press further, but the pause stretched, heavy with unspoken intent. Kat's pulse roared in her ears. She wanted to step back, to reclaim control, yet her hips tilted forward of their own accord, chasing the promise in his touch.
Outside, the chanting resumed, distant but insistent. Ramses set the cloth aside and reached for a vial of oil, pouring a measure into his palm. "The bathing continues," he said, voice thick with the same tension coiling through her. "And with it, the first binding of your fate to mine."
His oiled hands met her shoulders, kneading with strength that spoke of battles won and rituals performed. Kat closed her eyes, surrendering to the sensation for now, the ancient air, the warrior-priest's dominance, and the slow, inexorable pull of desire that threatened to rewrite everything she thought she knew about time and belonging.
