First Pose of Surrender
Selene Savan gripped the steering wheel tighter as she pulled into the small lot behind the studio. Her shoulders ached from another long day at the office, and the familiar knot in her stomach refused to loosen. Wesley had texted twice already, asking what she wanted for dinner, but she had ignored both messages. She needed this. Just one class. Something to quiet the noise in her head.
The sign above the door read "Serenity Flow" in soft gold letters. Women only. No men. No distractions. She had found it after searching for "stress relief yoga near me" at two in the morning, her laptop screen the only light in the bedroom while Wesley slept beside her. Now she sat in her car, fingers drumming on her thigh, wondering if she should just drive home.
She forced herself out of the seat, grabbed the cheap mat she had bought on the way, and walked inside. The lobby smelled of sandalwood and something sweeter she could not name. Soft instrumental music drifted from the main room. A few women in loose clothes chatted near the front desk, their voices low and easy. Selene kept her head down and signed the waiver with quick, jerky strokes of the pen.
The studio itself was warm and dimly lit, mirrors lining one wall, the other painted a deep forest green. Mats already covered the floor in neat rows. Selene chose a spot near the back, unrolled her mat, and sat with her legs crossed. Her heart beat too fast. She felt out of place in her old gray leggings and faded tank top, the fabric clinging in all the wrong ways. Everyone else looked comfortable, fluid, at home in their bodies.
The door at the front of the room opened and Gwendolyn Everett stepped through.
Selene's breath caught. The Gwendolyn was taller than she had expected, with long raven-black hair braided down her back and a body that moved like water. She wore simple black leggings and a cropped top that left a strip of toned midriff bare. Her green eyes swept the room once, sharp and assessing, before settling on Selene for a beat longer than necessary.
"Good evening," Gwendolyn said, her voice low and smooth. "Let's begin by finding our breath."
The class started simply enough. Gentle neck rolls. Shoulder shrugs. Selene tried to match the rhythm of the other women, but her movements felt stiff and mechanical. She kept glancing at the mirror, watching herself frown in concentration. Every few minutes Gwendolyn's gaze found her again. Those piercing eyes seemed to strip away the practiced calm Selene tried to wear.
"Inhale through the nose," Gwendolyn instructed, demonstrating at the front. "Let the breath fill the belly first, then the ribs, then the chest. Exhale slowly. Release whatever you carried in with you."
Selene closed her eyes and tried. The air felt thick in her lungs. She could hear the soft sounds of fabric shifting around her, bare feet on the mat, quiet sighs of effort. Her mind kept drifting to the stack of unread emails on her phone and the way Wesley had looked at her that morning, hopeful and a little tired.
They moved into their first real pose, downward dog. Selene pushed her hips up and back, arms shaking already. Her ponytail swung forward. She felt exposed, the position pulling her tank top away from her waist.
Soft footsteps approached. Selene opened her eyes and saw Gwendolyn's bare feet stop beside her mat.
"Your back is rounding," Gwendolyn said quietly. Warm hands settled on Selene's hips, adjusting the angle with firm pressure. "Lengthen through the spine. Press your heels toward the floor."
The touch lingered. Gwendolyn's thumbs rested just above the waistband of Selene's leggings, skin against skin. Selene's breath stuttered. Heat bloomed low in her belly, unexpected and unwelcome. She forced herself to hold the pose, but every nerve seemed to focus on those two points of contact.
"Better," Gwendolyn murmured. Her hands slid up Selene's sides in a slow correction before she moved on to the next student. Selene stayed in the pose longer than necessary, cheeks burning, trying to steady her breathing.
The rest of the class passed in a haze of growing tension. Every time Gwendolyn spoke, Selene felt the words settle inside her. When they moved into warrior two, Gwendolyn circled back. This time her fingers brushed the inside of Selene's thigh, guiding the knee outward. The touch was professional, precise, and yet it sent a slow pulse of awareness through Selene's body that she could not ignore.
By the time they reached savasana, Selene's skin felt too tight. She lay on her back, eyes closed, listening to the rise and fall of the other women's breathing. Gwendolyn's voice guided them into stillness, but Selene's mind raced. She pictured Wesley's face when she got home, the easy kiss he would expect, the questions about her day. She pictured Gwendolyn's green eyes instead and felt something inside her shift, small and dangerous.
Class ended. Women rolled up their mats and drifted out, exchanging soft goodbyes. Selene stayed on her mat, pretending to stretch, unsure whether to leave or wait. Gwendolyn moved through the room with unhurried grace, collecting stray blocks. When only the two of them remained, she turned.
"You are new," Gwendolyn said. It was not a question.
Selene nodded, pushing to her feet. "First time. I, um, felt a little lost."
Gwendolyn smiled, slow and knowing. "You held the poses well enough. But your mind was elsewhere. I could see it."
Selene swallowed. "Work stress. And other things."
"Many women come here for relief from the outside world." Gwendolyn stepped closer. The scent of her, warm skin and something herbal, reached Selene. "I offer private sessions for those who want deeper work. Tantric breath and alignment. It can be transformative if you are willing to surrender to the process."
Selene's pulse jumped. The word "surrender" landed heavy in the quiet room. She should say no. She should thank her and leave and go home to Wesley like a normal wife.
Instead she heard herself ask, "How private?"
"After hours. Just you and me. We can start with one session and see how your body responds." Gwendolyn's gaze held hers without wavering. "Thursday evening. Seven o'clock. I will leave the back door unlocked."
Selene nodded before she could stop herself. "Okay. I'll try."
Gwendolyn's smile deepened. "Good. Bring water. And wear something that moves with you."
Selene drove home in silence, the city lights blurring past the windows. Her phone buzzed on the passenger seat. Wesley's name lit the screen.
She answered on the second ring, voice steady even though her hands trembled on the wheel. "Hey. Sorry I missed your texts. The class ran long and then I stopped for tea. I'm on my way now."
"No problem," Wesley said, warm and unsuspecting. "I kept dinner warm. How was it?"
Selene glanced at her reflection in the rearview mirror. Her cheeks still held color. "Relaxing. I think I'll go back."
She hung up and turned the radio up to fill the car with noise, trying not to think about the way Gwendolyn's hands had felt on her hips or the quiet promise in those green eyes. The lie sat in her chest like a small, glowing coal. She told herself it was only one session. Just breathwork. Nothing more.
But as she pulled into her driveway, the memory of that lingering touch returned, and Selene knew she was already counting the hours until Thursday.
