The Consultation
Astrid Sinclair pushed through the heavy glass door of the discreet office building, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floor. The day had already stripped her raw. Back-to-back board meetings, a hostile takeover attempt from a rival firm, and the endless pressure of keeping her company at the top had left her shoulders locked tight and her mind buzzing with unfinished tasks. She checked her watch. Five minutes early, as always. She never arrived late. She never arrived anything but perfectly composed.
Christa Bradley's waiting area was nothing like the sleek, intimidating spaces she commanded downtown. Soft lighting bathed the room in warm amber tones. A low couch sat against one wall, flanked by bookshelves that held volumes on psychology and mindfulness rather than the latest financial reports. The air smelled faintly of cedar and something herbal. Astrid exhaled through her nose and adjusted the lapels of her charcoal power suit. The tailored fabric hugged her athletic frame, but even the familiar armor felt constricting today.
"Ms. Sinclair?" Christa's voice reached her before she saw him. Smooth, measured, carrying just enough warmth to invite without demanding. He stepped into the doorway of his private office, lean frame relaxed in a dark button-down and slacks. His neatly trimmed beard framed a calm smile, and his brown eyes met hers with steady confidence. "Come on in. I've been looking forward to meeting you."
Astrid followed him inside, her posture rigid. She chose the leather chair across from his desk rather than the more comfortable recliner he gestured toward. "Let's keep this efficient, Mr. Bradley. My schedule is packed."
"Christa is fine," he said, settling into his own chair with unhurried grace. "And efficiency works both ways. Tell me what brought you here today."
She crossed her legs, the motion precise. "Burnout. My assistant insisted I see someone. I don't have time for it, but apparently ignoring the symptoms is no longer an option." The words came out clipped, each syllable controlled. She hated admitting even that much.
Christa nodded, jotting nothing down. His attention stayed fully on her. "What does the burnout look like for you?"
Astrid hesitated. She was used to directing conversations, not yielding them. "I don't sleep through the night. Decisions that used to take seconds now require extra review. My team senses the hesitation, and that can't happen." She paused, jaw tightening. "I maintain control in every aspect of my life. It's how I built everything. Lately that control feels... thinner."
"Control is your default setting," Christa observed quietly. "You delegate only when forced, and even then you second-guess the outcome. You measure success by how little anyone else needs to step in."
His words landed with uncomfortable accuracy. Heat rose at the base of her neck. "That's not a flaw. It's discipline."
"It's also exhausting," he countered, voice gentle but direct. "Let's start with something simple. Close your eyes for me."
Astrid's first instinct was refusal. She never closed her eyes in front of strangers. Yet the quiet authority in his tone tugged at something beneath her fatigue. She complied, lashes lowering. The room dimmed behind her eyelids.
"Good," Christa said. "Notice the weight of your body in the chair. The way your shoulders carry the day. Let the breath move in and out without forcing it. In... and out."
His voice flowed like warm liquid, each instruction layered with calm suggestion. Astrid followed, expecting nothing more than basic breathing exercises. Instead, a gradual loosening spread through her chest. The constant mental checklist began to recede, replaced by the steady cadence of his words.
"You're holding tension here," he continued, and she felt the phantom press of attention at the base of her skull. "Release it. Let the control soften just enough to rest. You're safe to do that right now."
Safe. The word echoed oddly. Astrid rarely associated safety with yielding anything. Yet the suggestion slid beneath her defenses. Her breathing deepened. A subtle warmth bloomed low in her belly, unexpected and uninvited. It wasn't the sharp focus she cultivated in meetings. This felt softer, almost liquid. Her thighs pressed together involuntarily, the tailored skirt whispering against silk stockings.
She opened her eyes briefly, startled by the sensation. Christa watched her with patient attention, no judgment in his expression. "Stay with it," he said. "What are you noticing?"
"Warmth," she admitted, voice quieter than intended. "And... something else." The admission cost her. She prided herself on never revealing weakness, yet the warmth persisted, coiling gently between her hips. Arousal, subtle but unmistakable, stirred without any physical touch. Her nipples tightened against the lace of her bra, a secret betrayal of her iron composure.
Christa's tone remained instructional, almost hypnotic in its steadiness. "That's your nervous system remembering it can let go. Breathe into the warmth. Let it spread. You don't have to direct it. Just allow."
Astrid's hands curled on the armrests. The relaxation deepened, and with it came a flicker of something dangerously close to relief. She imagined, for one reckless second, what it might feel like to hand over decisions entirely. The thought sent another pulse of heat through her core. She swallowed hard.
"That's enough for today," Christa said after several minutes. His voice carried a note of quiet satisfaction. "Open your eyes when you're ready."
She did, blinking against the soft light. Her body felt heavier, more present, yet oddly lighter at the same time. The arousal lingered as a low thrum, not demanding, simply there. She smoothed her skirt with precise fingers, reclaiming her posture.
"I can provide daily audio files," Christa offered. "Short sessions you can use each night. They'll reinforce the relaxation without requiring you to come in every day. Most clients find them grounding."
Astrid studied him. Trust was not something she granted easily, yet the session had cracked something open. The exhaustion still sat beneath her skin, but the edge had dulled. "Daily files," she repeated. "And you'll track progress?"
"Only if you want me to," he said. "This works best when you feel in charge of the process."
A small smile touched her lips despite herself. "I always feel in charge." The words lacked their usual bite. Something about Christa's steady presence made the claim feel less absolute.
She stood, collecting her bag. The warmth had faded but left an echo. "Send the files. I'll try them for a week."
Christa rose with her. "Looking forward to hearing how they land, Astrid."
Her name on his lips sounded different than it did in boardrooms. Softer. More intimate. She nodded once, sharp and professional, yet the spark of trust had already taken root. She left the office with her stride measured, but the memory of that unexpected warmth followed her into the evening, quietly insistent.
