The Commission

Nicole Renteria stepped through the heavy wooden door of the studio, the faint scent of cedar and aged fabric wrapping around her like an invitation she had not expected. Her heels clicked softly against the polished floorboards as she scanned the space, taking in bolts of silk and lace draped over mannequins in various states of undress. She had heard whispers about Ignace McCarthy in the industry, a tailor whose work bordered on the obsessive, but nothing had prepared her for the quiet intensity of the room itself.

Ignace stood at a long worktable near the back, his tall frame bent over a length of midnight-blue charmeuse. He straightened as she entered, his sharp gray eyes meeting hers with a calm that felt deliberate. Dark hair fell across his forehead, and his hands, callused from years of needle and thread, rested lightly on the fabric. "Nicole Renteria," he said, his voice low and textured, carrying just enough warmth to ease the tension in her shoulders. "I was not sure you would come."

"I almost did not," she admitted, her fingers tightening around the strap of her portfolio. "But your reputation for precision is hard to ignore. I need that for what I have in mind."

He gestured to a pair of chairs near a fitting platform, and she crossed the room, the sound of her steps the only interruption in the stillness. As she sat, she opened her portfolio and spread sketches across the table. "A sensual lingerie line," she explained, her voice gaining the vivid edge she reserved for creative pitches. "Not the usual lace and straps. Something that feels like a second skin, that moves with the body and reveals without exposing everything at once. I want pieces that make the wearer feel powerful in their surrender to the fabric itself."

Ignace leaned forward, studying the drawings with a focus that made her pulse quicken. "Shared vision," he murmured. "I have always believed clothing can guide the wearer into a different state of mind. Not just cover, but influence. Your sketches suggest you understand that already."

Nicole felt a flicker of validation she had not anticipated. Most collaborators dismissed her ideas as too intimate, too risky for commercial lines. Ignace's response cut straight through that doubt. "Exactly," she said, leaning in. "The garments should create a kind of... trance. A slow awareness of every shift and breath."

They spoke for nearly an hour, trading thoughts on bias cuts and the way silk whispered against skin. Nicole described how certain seams could frame the body like art, and Ignace countered with ideas for hidden reinforcements that would encourage posture without forcing it. The conversation flowed with an ease that surprised her, each idea building on the last until the studio seemed smaller, more intimate.

"I would like to hire you," she said at last, the words coming out steadier than she felt. "As collaborator on the full collection. My studio can handle production, but your hand in the initial constructions is essential."

Ignace nodded once, the motion precise. "Then we begin with measurements. If you are comfortable."

She stood, smoothing her blouse, and stepped onto the low platform he indicated. The first touch of his hands at her waist sent an unexpected warmth through her. He worked methodically, the tape measure sliding around her ribcage, then lower, his fingers brushing the underside of her breasts through the thin fabric. Nicole inhaled sharply, her insecurities rising like old habits. She had always hidden behind the garments she designed, never quite believing her lithe frame with its subtle curves deserved the attention she gave to others.

"You are holding tension here," Ignace observed quietly, his palm resting briefly at the small of her back. His touch was firm, not demanding, yet it seemed to invite her to release. "Breathe out slowly. Let the measurement settle."

She obeyed without thinking, the air leaving her lungs in a long exhale. A strange lightness followed, as if the simple instruction had loosened something tight inside her chest. His hands continued their work, the tape circling her hips, then her thighs, each pass accompanied by that same calm voice. "Relax into it," he said. "The fabric will remember how you stand when you are at ease."

Nicole's skin prickled under his touch. She had expected clinical efficiency, not this quiet guidance that made every brush of his fingers feel deliberate. Heat pooled low in her belly, unexpected and startling. She shifted slightly, and the tape tightened for a moment before he adjusted it with a murmured, "Still now. Good."

The word settled over her like a soft command. Her breathing slowed further, her mind drifting toward the sensation of silk she had described earlier. Ignace noted numbers in a small book, his strong hands never lingering longer than necessary, yet each contact seemed to echo. By the time he stepped back, Nicole felt both exposed and strangely centered, her earlier self-criticism muted beneath a layer of quiet arousal she could not name.

"The line will suit you," he said, his gray eyes holding hers. "We will begin construction next week."

She nodded, gathering her portfolio with hands that felt newly aware of their own movements. The hiring was done. The collaboration had started. And somewhere in the measured silence of the studio, something within her had already begun to shift.
