Arrival and First Count
The gravel crunched under their rental car tires as Piper killed the engine. She sat for a moment, both hands on the wheel, and stared at the lodge through the windshield. It looked like something from a catalog. Warm wood, wide windows, a porch with rocking chairs. Too perfect. She turned to Paul.
"It looks like a cult."
Paul laughed, that low rumble she loved. He reached over and squeezed her knee. "It's a couples retreat, babe. Not a cult."
"Same thing." She unbuckled her seatbelt. "They're going to have us drink Kool-Aid and do trust falls."
"Kool-Aid sounds good right now. I'm thirsty."
She shook her head but she was smiling. That was the thing about Paul. He could pull her out of any mood with a stupid joke. She needed that today. Her stomach was full of bees.
They grabbed their overnight bags from the trunk. The mountain air hit her face, clean and cold. She breathed it in. Okay. This was fine. This was just a weekend away from the city. No phones. No emails. Just her and Paul and some silly workshops about connection and intimacy. She could handle that.
The front door was unlocked. Inside, the lodge smelled like cedar and lavender. A woman stood behind a small check-in desk. She had sleek blonde hair pulled back in a low ponytail and bright blue eyes that crinkled when she smiled. She wore a simple cream sweater and jeans. Approachable. Warm.
"You must be Piper and Paul," she said. "I'm Alex. Welcome."
Piper's eyebrows shot up. "Alex? Like the verb?"
Alex laughed. "Like the verb. My parents were hippies. It stuck." She came around the desk, her movements unhurried. "Let me show you to your room. Then we'll do a quick orientation."
The room was beautiful. A king-sized bed with white linens. A fireplace already set with kindling. French doors that opened onto a small balcony overlooking the woods. Paul set their bags down and let out a low whistle.
"Not bad," he said.
Piper walked to the balcony doors and pressed her palm against the glass. The trees were thick and green. No cabins. No roads. Just forest. It felt like they were the only people on earth. That was the point, she knew. Isolation. Intimacy. She turned back to Alex.
"So what's the schedule? Do we have to sign anything?"
Alex's smile was easy. "Just a few waivers. Standard stuff. Nothing scary." She gestured toward the main hall. "We'll start with an orientation session. Then a light exercise to help you both settle in. No pressure. Just a chance to reset."
Piper followed her into the hall, Paul close behind. The room had floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the forest. Cushions and blankets were arranged in a loose circle on the floor. Alex sat down cross-legged and motioned for them to join her.
Piper hesitated. She wasn't the type to sit on the floor and hold hands. But Paul was already lowering himself down, his long legs folding easily. He looked up at her with those warm brown eyes and patted the cushion next to him.
"Come on, Pi. It's just sitting."
She sat. The cushion was surprisingly comfortable. Alex smiled at them both.
"Tell me what you're hoping to get out of this weekend."
Paul went first. Typical Paul. He talked about deepening their connection, about learning to communicate better. Piper watched his hands as he spoke. He always gestured when he was nervous. She realized he was nervous too. That made her feel better.
"Piper?" Alex's blue eyes were steady on her. "What about you?"
"I don't know." She shrugged. "I guess I want to feel less distracted. Less like I'm always looking at my phone or my to-do list. I want to be here. With him." She glanced at Paul. "I want to feel more."
Alex nodded slowly. "More. That's a good word." She let it hang in the air. "More is what this weekend is about. More connection. More presence. More pleasure."
The word pleasure made Piper shift on her cushion. She felt heat creep up her neck. Of course. This was a couples retreat. There was probably a lot of talk about pleasure. She needed to relax.
"Let's start with a simple exercise," Alex said. "I want you both to close your eyes."
Piper looked at Paul. He shrugged and closed his eyes. She sighed and did the same.
"Good. Now I want you to take a deep breath. In through your nose. Hold it. Then out through your mouth."
Piper followed along. The air was cool and smelled like cedar.
"Another breath. This time, let your shoulders drop."
She felt her shoulders lower. The tension in her neck eased.
"Now I'm going to count down from ten to one. With each number, I want you to feel your body relaxing more. Letting go. By the time I reach one, you'll feel floaty and calm and open. Ready?"
Piper wanted to roll her eyes but she couldn't. Her body was already responding. She felt her jaw unclench.
"Ten. Feel the tension in your forehead releasing."
She did. It was strange but she felt it. Her forehead went smooth.
"Nine. Let your jaw fall slack."
Her mouth opened slightly. She heard Paul breathing next to her.
"Eight. Let your neck and shoulders soften."
A wave of warmth rolled through her shoulders. She hadn't realized she was holding so much tension there.
"Seven. Feel the relaxation spreading down your arms."
Her arms felt heavy. Good heavy. Like they were sinking into the cushion.
"Six. Let your chest and stomach release."
She breathed deeper. Her stomach went soft. The bees were gone.
"Five. Let your hips and lower back let go."
She felt a pull in her hips. Not pain. Just awareness. She let it go.
"Four. Feel your thighs and knees relax."
Her legs felt long and loose.
"Three. Let your calves and feet go completely slack."
She was floating. She was sure of it. Her body felt distant and warm and safe.
"Two. You're almost there. Just one more number."
She waited. She didn't want to open her eyes. She felt Paul's hand find hers. Squeezed.
"One. Welcome back."
Piper opened her eyes. The world looked sharper. Colors were brighter. Paul was looking at her with a soft smile on his face. His eyes were a little glassy.
"Whoa," he said. "That was something."
Alex laughed gently. "That's the idea. How do you feel, Piper?"
Piper blinked. She felt good. She felt light. She felt like she wanted to laugh and cry at the same time. She did laugh.
"I feel like I had a drink but didn't drink anything."
"Exactly." Alex stood up. "That's what we're working with this weekend. That state. Accessible. Easy. Just a few words and a breath away."
Piper looked at her hands. They felt like they belonged to her but also not. She flexed her fingers.
"Can we do that again?" Paul asked. He was leaning forward, his eyes bright.
Alex smiled. "We'll do a lot more of that. But first, let's get you settled. Dinner is at seven. Then we have a small group session. Just the three of us."
Piper stood up. Her legs felt a little unsteady. Paul put his hand on her lower back, steadying her. She leaned into him.
"That was weird," she said. "But good weird."
"Yeah," Paul said. "I feel like I could sleep for twelve hours or run a mile. Both at once."
They followed Alex back toward the room. Piper's mind was quiet. That was the strange part. Usually her brain was full of noise. Lists. Worries. Things to do. Now there was just space.
In the room, Alex showed them the mini fridge with snacks and water. She pointed out the schedule on the desk.
"Rest if you want. Or walk the grounds. Dinner is in the main hall." She paused at the door. "One thing to note. The relaxation exercise we just did. I used a countdown. That count will work for you now. If you hear those numbers again, you'll slip back into that state. It's a shortcut. A tool. For the weekend."
Piper nodded. That made sense. A trigger. She'd heard about those in books. Never thought she'd have one.
"Okay," she said. "Thanks."
Alex left. The door clicked shut. Paul turned to her, his expression open and curious.
"What do you think?" he asked.
Piper walked to the bed and sat down. She looked at him standing there, so solid and familiar. She felt a tenderness she hadn't felt in months. Maybe longer.
"I think I need a nap," she said. "But also I think I feel closer to you already. And that's weird because we just did a breathing exercise."
Paul sat beside her. His thigh pressed against hers. "Not weird. That's the point. We're resetting."
She looked at him. His brown eyes were soft. His mouth was curved in that easy smile. She wanted to kiss him. She did. It was slow and warm and tasted like mint from his gum.
The kiss deepened. His hand came up to cradle the back of her head, fingers threading through her hair. She could feel the warmth of his palm against her scalp, the slight pressure as he drew her closer. Her body responded before her mind caught up. She leaned into him, her chest pressing against his, and she could feel his heartbeat through his shirt. Steady. Familiar. But faster than usual.
His other hand slid to her waist, thumb tracing the strip of skin where her shirt had ridden up. The touch sent a shiver through her. Not from the cold. From him. From the way his fingers mapped her body like he was relearning it after being away for a long time. In a way, he had been away. They both had. Buried in work and screens and the endless low hum of city life.
She pulled back just enough to look at him. His pupils were dark and wide. His breath came a little uneven. The relaxation exercise had stripped something away from both of them. Some wall they'd been maintaining without realizing it. She could feel the absence of it now. The rawness. The openness.
"Hi," she whispered.
"Hi yourself." His thumb traced a slow circle on her hip. "You feel different."
"Good different or bad different?"
"Good. Softer. Like you're actually here."
She kissed him again. Harder this time. Her tongue found his and she tasted the mint, tasted the warmth of his mouth. He made a sound in the back of his throat, low and hungry, and it traveled through her like a current. She could feel heat pooling low in her belly, spreading outward. Her skin felt sensitive. Every point of contact between them was amplified. The brush of his chest against her nipples through her bra. The press of his thigh between hers. The way his fingers dug slightly into her hip.
He pulled her onto his lap. She straddled him, her knees on either side of his hips, and she could feel him through his jeans. Hard. Warm. She rocked against him without thinking, a slow grind that made them both inhale sharply. His hands gripped her ass, squeezing, pulling her closer.
"Pi," he breathed against her mouth. "We have time."
"I know." She didn't stop moving. The friction was building something inside her, a tight coil of want that made her breath come in short gasps. She could feel herself getting wet. Could feel the fabric of her underwear growing damp. The thought should have embarrassed her. It didn't. Not right now. Right now everything felt natural and urgent and right.
His hand slid under her shirt. His palm was warm against her stomach, sliding upward. She arched into his touch, giving him access. His fingers found the edge of her bra and paused. He looked at her. A question in his eyes.
"Yes," she said before he could ask.
He unclasped the bra with practiced fingers. His hand slipped beneath the fabric and cupped her breast. She let out a shaky breath as his thumb brushed over her nipple. It hardened under his touch, sensitive and aching. He rolled it between his thumb and forefinger, and she felt the sensation shoot straight down between her legs. She ground against him harder.
"You're so responsive," he murmured. His voice was rough. "I forgot what that felt like."
"Me too." The admission came out raw. Honest. She was always so controlled. So contained. But the countdown had loosened something in her. She couldn't find the walls she usually kept in place.
He pulled her shirt over her head. The cool air hit her skin and she shivered. He looked at her. Really looked. His eyes traveled from her face down to her breasts, still partially covered by the unclasped bra. He reached up and slid the straps down her shoulders, letting it fall away. She sat bare before him from the waist up. Vulnerable. Open.
"You're beautiful," he said. Not a compliment. A statement. Like he was reminding himself of a fact he'd let slip from memory.
She reached for his shirt. He helped her pull it off. His chest was broad and familiar, dusted with dark hair. She ran her hands over him, feeling the warmth of his skin, the slight definition of muscle beneath. He wasn't a gym guy. Never had been. But his body was solid in a way that made her feel safe. Grounded.
She leaned forward and kissed his collarbone. Then his neck. She could feel his pulse against her lips. Fast. Matching hers. She let her tongue trace a line up to his ear, and he shuddered beneath her.
"Lie down," she said.
He did, pulling her with him. She ended up on top, her legs straddling his hips, her bare chest pressed against his. The skin contact was overwhelming. Every inch of her felt alive. She could feel the coarse hair on his chest against her nipples, the hard plane of his stomach beneath hers, the unmistakable bulge of his erection pressing against her core through their jeans.
She kissed him deeply. Their tongues moved together, slow and searching. His hands roamed her back, her sides, her hips. Touching everywhere. Relearning. She could feel the calluses on his palms from the gym, the slight roughness of his fingers as they traced her spine. Each touch left a trail of heat in its wake.
She sat up. His eyes were dark, pupils blown wide. She could feel him trembling slightly beneath her. She reached down and unbuckled his belt. The metal clink was loud in the quiet room. She unbuttoned his jeans. Slid the zipper down. She could see the outline of him through his boxers. She traced it with her finger and he sucked in a breath.
"Piper."
"I know." She smiled. "We have time."
She slipped off him and lay beside him on the bed. They both worked at removing their remaining clothes. Jeans. Underwear. Socks. Until they were both naked on the white linens. She looked at him. All of him. Familiar and yet somehow new. His cock was hard against his stomach, thick and flushed. She reached over and wrapped her hand around it. He groaned.
"God, Pi."
She stroked him slowly. Feeling the weight of him in her hand. The silk over steel. He was warm and slightly slick at the tip. She spread the moisture with her thumb and his hips jerked. She loved this. Loved the power of it. Loved watching him come apart under her touch. She'd missed this. The intimacy of it. The rawness.
He reached for her. His hand slid between her thighs and she parted them for him. His fingers found her wet and ready. She gasped when he touched her clit. A jolt of pleasure so sharp it made her toes curl. He circled it slowly, teasingly. She was already so sensitive from the relaxation exercise, from the kissing, from the skin contact. Every nerve was on fire.
"Inside," she said. "Please."
He slid one finger into her. Then two. She was tight around him. She could feel herself clenching and releasing. He curved his fingers slightly, finding that spot inside her, and she moaned. The sound echoed in the quiet room. She didn't care. She didn't care about anything except his hands on her and the building pressure low in her belly.
He stroked her while his thumb worked her clit. Slow at first. Then faster. She could feel herself getting close. The coil tightening. Her breath came in short bursts. Her free hand gripped the sheet beneath her. She was still holding his cock in her other hand but she'd stopped stroking. Couldn't coordinate anymore. Couldn't think. Could only feel.
"Come for me," he said. His voice was low and rough in her ear. "I want to feel you."
She did. The orgasm hit her in waves. Rolling through her body from the center outward. She cried out, something between his name and a moan. Her walls clenched around his fingers. Her body arched off the bed. The pleasure was intense and overwhelming, more powerful than she'd felt in a long time. Maybe because she was so open. So present. So here.
When it passed, she was trembling. He withdrew his fingers slowly and she whimpered at the loss. He kissed her. Soft. Tender. She could taste herself on his lips.
"Your turn," she whispered against his mouth.
She pushed him onto his back and climbed over him. She positioned herself above his cock, wet and ready, and sank down slowly. They both groaned as he filled her. The stretch was exquisite. Fullness and pressure and the rightness of it. She sat still for a moment, adjusting to the feeling. He was deep inside her. She could feel every inch.
She started to move. Slow at first. Rolling her hips. Finding the rhythm. His hands gripped her hips, guiding her. She braced her hands on his chest and let herself feel. The friction of him inside her. The way her clit rubbed against him with each movement. The look on his face. Eyes half-closed. Mouth open. Completely lost in her.
She picked up the pace. Faster. Harder. The sound of their bodies meeting filled the room. Skin against skin. The wet slide of him inside her. She could feel another orgasm building. Different this time. Deeper. She chased it. Let it grow.
"I'm close," he said. His voice was strained. His fingers dug into her hips.
"Wait for me." She was almost there. So close. She reached between them and touched herself. The added sensation pushed her over the edge. She came again, harder than the first time. Her whole body tightened. She heard herself scream something. His name. A curse. A prayer. She didn't know.
He followed her over. She felt him pulse inside her. Felt the warmth of him filling her. His hips jerked upward and he groaned, long and low. She collapsed against his chest. Both of them breathing hard. Hearts pounding against each other.
They lay like that for a long time. Still joined. His hand traced lazy patterns on her back. She pressed her face into his neck, breathing him in. Salt and cedar and something that was just Paul. Her body felt heavy and light at the same time. Spent. Satisfied. More relaxed than the exercise had made her.
"Dinner in an hour," she finally said. Her voice was muffled against his skin.
"Plenty of time." But neither of them moved.
He was still inside her. Softening but present. She didn't want to separate yet. Didn't want to break the connection. This was what she'd wanted. To feel more. To be here. She was here.
"Pi."
"Yeah?"
"I'm glad we came."
She lifted her head to look at him. His brown eyes were soft and satisfied. His hair was mussed from her fingers. He looked happy. She realized she felt happy too.
"Me too. I think."
He laughed. She laughed. The sound bounced off the wooden walls. Outside, the wind moved through the trees. Inside, she felt something shifting. Something she couldn't name yet. But it felt good.
She closed her eyes. In her head, she heard Alex's voice counting down. Ten. She let herself sink. Nine. The bed was soft beneath them. Eight. Paul's arms tightened around her. Seven. Six. Five. Four. Three. Two. One.
She was asleep before she finished counting.
