After-Hours Finding
The security monitors cast a blue glow across Jonah Reeves's face as he sat in the back office, a cup of cold coffee forgotten at his elbow. Three weeks as regional manager had taught him the rhythms of this place, taught him to notice what didn't belong.
He rewound the footage for the third time. There she was, Juliet Irving, the night-shift bookseller with the quiet voice and the cardigan that never quite seemed to close properly. On the screen, she moved through the aisles with a purpose that had nothing to do with shelving books.
The timestamp read well past midnight, three nights ago. She stopped in the poetry section, glanced around, then reached under her skirt and pulled down her panties. He watched her fold them carefully and slide them between the pages of a hardcover Neruda collection. Then she walked away as though nothing had happened.
Jonah leaned back in his chair, letting the image settle in his mind. He had seen her around the store, of course. She was the kind of woman who made you look twice and then wonder why you hadn't noticed her before. Dark hair always in a loose bun, with pale skin and eyes that seemed to look past you rather than at you. She wore cardigans over simple blouses, but the cardigans always seemed to hang open at the wrong moment, showing a flash of collarbone, a hint of bra strap.
He had thought it was carelessness. Now he knew better.
He scrolled through more footage. The pattern was unmistakable. A pair of earrings left on a display table in fiction. A single high heel abandoned in the cookbook aisle. There was even a bra strap dangling from a shelf in self-help, as if she had taken it off while browsing and forgotten it. But she hadn't forgotten. She had left it there on purpose, knowing someone would find it, knowing someone would wonder.
The footage from two nights ago showed her in the biography aisle, standing completely still with her back to the camera. She had worn a thin white blouse that night, and he watched as she reached behind herself and unclasped her bra with one hand. She pulled it out through her sleeve, a slow, practiced motion, and then draped it over a biography of Simone de Beauvoir before walking away.
His jaw tightened. She was good at this. She knew where the cameras were, how to position herself so that her face was never fully visible, how to leave her little offerings without being caught.
Until now.
The store had been closed for over an hour. The last customer had left around closing time, the final employee shortly after. He had stayed behind to review the quarterly inventory reports, but the footage had caught his eye first. A flicker of movement in an otherwise empty store. A woman who moved like she was dancing with ghosts.
He saved the clips to a folder on his laptop and stood up. His footsteps echoed on the hardwood floors as he walked through the darkened store, past the empty registers and the silent shelves, until he reached the staff-only door that led to the break room.
She would be there. She always stayed late to close up, even though her shift had ended a while ago. He had noticed that about her too. She lingered. She found reasons to stay.
He pushed open the door.
Juliet Irving sat at the small break table with a book open in front of her, a mug of tea steaming at her elbow. She looked up when he entered, and her eyes widened just a fraction before she composed herself.
"Mr. Reeves," she said. "I didn't know you were still here."
"I could say the same to you." He closed the door behind him and leaned against it, crossing his arms. "Your shift ended an hour ago."
"I know. I was just finishing a chapter." She closed the book, but her fingers stayed on the cover, tracing the edge. "Is there something you need?"
He didn't answer right away. He let the silence stretch, let her feel the weight of his gaze. She was wearing a light gray cardigan tonight, unbuttoned, over a simple white tank top. Her hair was down, falling in dark waves around her shoulders. She looked softer like this, more vulnerable, and he wondered if that was another part of the performance.
"I've been reviewing the security footage," he said finally.
Her hand stilled on the book. "Oh?"
"From the last two weeks." He watched her face carefully, saw the slight tightening around her eyes. "There's some interesting activity in the overnight hours."
She didn't speak. Her throat moved as she swallowed.
"You want to tell me about it?" he asked. "Or should I just show you what I found?"
Juliet's fingers curled around the edge of the book, her knuckles going white. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Really." He pushed off from the door and walked toward her, his steps deliberate, measured. "Because I have footage of you leaving your underwear in the poetry section. I watched you take off your bra in biography. And there are recordings of you leaving earrings and shoes and god knows what else scattered through this store like breadcrumbs."
She was frozen now, her eyes fixed on the table in front of her. Her chest rose and fell a little faster than before.
"I'm not angry, Juliet." He stopped beside her chair, close enough to see the pulse jumping in her throat. "I'm curious."
"Curious," she repeated, and her voice came out rough.
"I want to know why." He reached out and touched her chin, tilting her face up so she had to look at him. "Why you do it. Why you leave pieces of yourself around this store for strangers to find."
Her breath caught at his touch. He felt her skin warm under his fingers, saw the way her pupils dilated in the low light.
"I don't know," she whispered.
"I think you do." He let his thumb trace along her jawline, featherlight. "I think you know what you want. You just haven't admitted it to yourself yet."
She didn't pull away. She didn't tell him to stop. Her lips parted slightly, and he watched her chest rise and fall as she breathed faster.
"Here's what's going to happen," he said, his voice dropping low. "I'm not going to fire you. I'm not going to report you."
Her eyes searched his face, looking for the catch.
"In fact, I'm going to give you what you've been asking for." He released her chin and stepped back, giving her space to breathe. "Starting tomorrow night, you're going to do it on purpose. One deliberate exposure per shift. Something intentional. And you'll do it knowing I'm watching."
The color drained from her face, then flooded back. "What?"
"You heard me." He pulled out the chair across from her and sat down, leaning forward with his elbows on the table. "You've been doing this in secret, hoping someone would notice. Well, I noticed. And now I'm going to make sure you do it right."
Juliet shook her head slowly. "That's insane. I can't just walk around the store with my clothes off."
"I didn't say with your clothes off. I said one deliberate exposure per shift." He held up a finger. "One moment where you let a customer see something they shouldn't. One piece of clothing left where someone will find it. That's all. And you'll do it knowing I'm watching the cameras, knowing I'll see everything."
Her mouth opened, then closed. She looked at him like he had grown a second head, but underneath that shock, he saw something else. A flicker of interest. A spark of heat.
"Why?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Because you need someone to guide this." He leaned back in his chair, letting his gaze travel over her slowly, deliberately. "You've been stumbling in the dark, Juliet. I'm offering you a hand."
The silence stretched between them, thick and charged. He could see her thinking, could see the battle playing out behind her eyes. Shame against desire. Fear against need.
"And if I say no?" she asked.
"Then you go back to your regular shifts, and we never speak of this again." He shrugged. "But I don't think you'll say no."
She looked down at her hands, still gripping the book. "How do you know?"
"Because you're still here." He stood up, smoothing down his shirt. "You could have walked out the door the second I brought up the footage. You could have quit or called HR to report me for harassment. But you didn't."
He walked toward the door, then paused with his hand on the handle.
"First exposure tomorrow night, Juliet. I'll be watching."
He left her sitting alone in the break room, her tea growing cold, her heart pounding so hard she could feel it in her throat.
The parking lot was empty when she finally walked out, her keys clutched in her hand like a weapon. The night air hit her face, cool and sharp, but it did nothing to cool the heat between her legs.
She stood beside her car for a long moment, keys dangling uselessly from her fingers. Her body hummed with an energy she couldn't name, a current that ran from her chest down to her core, pooling low and heavy.
She had been caught. She should be terrified. She should be calling Hazel right now, telling her everything, asking for advice.
Instead, she pressed her thighs together and felt the wetness soaking through her underwear.
God, what was wrong with her?
She opened the car door and slid into the driver's seat, but she didn't start the engine. She sat there in the dark, her forehead resting against the steering wheel, trying to slow her breathing.
One deliberate exposure per shift.
The words echoed in her head, and she felt a fresh pulse of arousal between her legs. She squeezed her thighs tighter and let out a shaky breath.
Her mind replayed the moment he touched her chin, tilted her face up. The warmth of his fingers. The way he looked at her, not with disgust or pity, but with hunger. Recognition. He saw her. He saw what she had been doing, what she had been hiding, and instead of recoiling, he leaned in closer.
She should be ashamed. She should be furious.
Instead, her hand drifted down from the steering wheel to her lap.
She told herself she was just adjusting her skirt. That was all. Just smoothing the fabric, pressing it down. But her fingers lingered at the hem, and her thighs parted slightly, and she felt the heat radiating from between her legs like a furnace.
She bit her lip and glanced around the parking lot. Empty. Dark. The nearest streetlight was at the far end, casting a pale orange glow that didn't reach her car. She was alone.
Her hand slipped under her skirt.
She gasped at the first touch, her fingers pressing against the soaked cotton of her underwear. She was wetter than she had realized, embarrassingly wet, the fabric clinging to her folds. She traced the outline of herself through the cloth, and her hips shifted involuntarily, seeking more pressure.
This was wrong. She should stop. She should drive home and take a cold shower and forget this ever happened.
But then she thought about his voice, low and controlled, telling her what she was going to do. Telling her she was going to expose herself on purpose. Telling her he would be watching.
A soft moan escaped her lips as she pushed the fabric aside and slid one finger along her slit. She was slick and swollen, her clit throbbing beneath her touch. She circled it slowly, teasing herself, building the tension the way she always did when she was alone with her fantasies.
But this wasn't her fantasy. This was real. He had seen her. He knew her secret. And instead of punishing her, he had given her permission.
Permission to be what she was.
She pushed one finger inside herself and whimpered at the sensation. Tight. Wet. Her walls clenched around her knuckle as she began to move, slowly at first, then faster. Her thumb found her clit and pressed, and she bucked against her own hand, the steering wheel digging into her forehead.
She imagined him in the security office, watching the cameras. Watching her walk through the store. Watching her pause in an aisle, look around, then slowly unbutton her cardigan. Not all the way. Just enough. Just enough to show the curve of her breast through the thin fabric of her tank top, the outline of her nipple hardening in the cool air.
She added a second finger, stretching herself, and her breath came in short, sharp gasps. The wet sounds of her fingers moving inside herself filled the quiet car, obscene and unmistakable. She didn't care. She couldn't care. All she could think about was his eyes on the screen, his jaw tightening the way it had when he watched the footage, his voice telling her she was going to do it again.
One deliberate exposure per shift.
She imagined walking through the poetry section, pausing near the Neruda collection where she had left her panties. She imagined bending over to reach a book on the bottom shelf, her skirt riding up, her bare thighs exposed to anyone who might be watching. She imagined him in the security office, leaning forward, his hand pressed against the front of his pants.
Oh god. She was close. She was so close.
She fucked herself faster, her fingers slamming into her wet cunt, her thumb grinding against her clit. Her hips rocked in the driver's seat, the leather creaking beneath her. She could feel the orgasm building, a tight coil of pleasure in her belly, winding tighter and tighter with every thrust of her fingers.
She thought about his thumb on her jaw. Featherlight. Proprietary. The way he tilted her face up like he owned her, like he had the right to look at her however he wanted. And she had let him. She had let him because she wanted it. She wanted to be seen. She wanted to be known.
She wanted to be watched.
The orgasm hit her hard, ripping through her body in waves. She cried out, her voice echoing in the confined space of the car, her fingers buried deep inside herself as her walls spasmed around them. She rode it out, grinding against her hand, her thighs shaking, her breath coming in ragged sobs.
When it finally subsided, she sat there in the dark, trembling. Her fingers were still inside her, still feeling the aftershocks, the small fluttering contractions of her inner walls. She pulled them out slowly, watched the glisten of her own arousal on her skin in the dim light from the distant streetlamp.
She should be disgusted with herself. She should be horrified.
Instead, she lifted her fingers to her lips and tasted herself, salty and musky, and felt a fresh wave of desire wash over her.
Tomorrow night. He would be watching.
She started the car and pulled out of the lot, but her mind was already miles away, already in the store, already positioning herself in front of a camera, already letting her cardigan fall open just a little wider than it should.
She didn't know if she was excited or terrified.
She knew she was both.
And she knew she would be there tomorrow night, ready to do what he asked.
