The First Bow
Salina Homan stepped into the single spotlight and felt the familiar flutter in her chest, that mix of adrenaline and doubt that always hit before an open-mic set. The theater was half-empty, the usual mix of bored regulars and a few curious newcomers scattered across the worn velvet seats. She smoothed the front of her black dress, the fabric clinging to her curves, and offered the audience her brightest stage smile.
"Good evening," she began, voice carrying that theatrical lilt she had practiced until it sounded effortless. "Tonight I'm going to need a brave volunteer. Someone willing to let me inside their mind for a few minutes. Any takers?"
A hand shot up from the third row, a lanky man in his late twenties with an eager grin. Salina nodded at him, masking the quick spike of nerves. She had been testing stronger inductions lately, layering suggestions in ways that felt almost too sharp, too precise. Tonight she would push further than usual, just to see.
The volunteer climbed the short flight of stairs to the stage, and Salina guided him to the single chair positioned center stage. "What's your name?" she asked, keeping her tone light and warm.
"Mike," he answered, already chuckling as if this were all a joke.
"All right, Mike. I want you to focus on my voice and nothing else. Watch my eyes. Listen to the sound of my words. Let everything else fade." Salina leaned in, her piercing green eyes locking onto his. She began the induction with the usual rhythm, counting down, guiding his breathing, but tonight the words carried an extra weight she could feel in her own bones. Something shifted in the air between them, a subtle click like a lock sliding home. Mike's shoulders relaxed instantly, deeper than any volunteer had before.
Salina's pulse quickened. She had expected the usual light trance, maybe a few laughs from silly suggestions. Instead Mike's face went slack in seconds, his breathing slow and even. The supernatural potency she had only suspected now surged through her, real and undeniable. She planted the first suggestion with careful precision, her voice dropping into that husky commanding register she reserved for the stage.
"Mike, when I snap my fingers, you'll believe you're a dog. You'll bark, you'll pant, you'll crawl around this stage like you own it. And every time the audience laughs, you'll feel proud, like you've done something wonderful. Do you understand?"
He nodded, eyes glassy. Salina hesitated for half a second, then snapped her fingers.
Mike dropped to his hands and knees without hesitation. A loud, enthusiastic bark echoed through the theater. The audience erupted in surprised laughter, and Mike's face split into a wide, happy grin as he circled the stage on all fours, barking again and again. He even lifted one hand like a paw and scratched at the air, playing to the crowd.
Salina stood frozen for a moment, watching the spectacle unfold exactly as she had commanded. The rush hit her like a wave, hot and intoxicating. Real control. Not suggestion or performance tricks, but actual obedience. Her thighs pressed together beneath the dress as the thrill coursed through her, mixing with a sharp edge of insecurity. What if someone realized this was more than an act? What if she couldn't stop it once it started?
She forced a laugh of her own, playing along for the audience. "Looks like we've got a new star performer tonight." Another snap of her fingers deepened the suggestion. Mike began to howl, long and mournful, then switched to yipping barks that sent fresh waves of laughter rolling through the seats. He rolled onto his back and kicked his legs in the air, completely unselfconscious, while the crowd clapped and whistled.
Inside, Salina's thoughts raced. This was power, pure and unfiltered. She could feel it settling into her like a second skin, feeding the ambitious part of her that had always craved recognition. At the same time, a small voice whispered warnings about exposure, about crossing lines she couldn't uncross. She pushed the doubt down and focused on the high, the way Mike's obedience made her feel alive and dangerous and seen.
She brought him out of the trance with another smooth countdown, guiding him back to the chair. Mike blinked, looking dazed and slightly embarrassed as the audience applauded. "What the hell did I just do?" he asked, laughing nervously.
"You were fantastic," Salina assured him, helping him stand. Her hand lingered on his arm a moment longer than necessary, savoring the faint echo of control still humming between them. The seeds of obsession took root right there, quiet and insistent. She wanted more of this. Not just volunteers on open-mic nights, but deeper, riskier targets. She wanted to see how far the power could stretch.
As Mike returned to his seat to scattered cheers, Salina took her final bow. The spotlight felt warmer than usual against her skin, and the applause washed over her like validation she had been starving for. Yet beneath the satisfaction, the clash of thrill and insecurity lingered. She had tasted something real tonight, something that could change everything if she let it.
She stepped off the stage into the dim backstage area, heart still pounding. The first bow had been taken, but the hunger for more control was only beginning to stir.
