The Bold Arrival
The front door crashed open with theatrical force, announcing her arrival before a single word was spoken. Connor Blake looked up from the kitchen counter, his knife pausing mid-slice over a tomato. He had been expecting this moment for weeks, dreading it, preparing for it. The sharp click of high heels against hardwood preceded her appearance around the corner.
Larissa Baker swept into the kitchen like she owned it, dragging an oversized suitcase behind her. A cropped white tank top stopped just below her breasts, leaving a long stretch of tanned midriff exposed. Her shorts were so tiny they barely qualified as clothing, frayed denim edges grazing the tops of her thighs. Blonde hair fell in perfect waves around her shoulders, and her full lips were painted a glossy pink.
She looked exactly like the entitled college princess who had made his life miserable every summer for the past three years.
"Miss me, stepbrother?" Her voice dripped with false sweetness as she tossed her keys onto the counter.
Connor finished slicing the tomato before responding. "You're early. Mom said you'd be here tomorrow."
"I wanted to surprise you." Larissa leaned against the counter, crossing her arms beneath her chest in a way that pushed her breasts up higher, the thin fabric straining. "Looks like I succeeded."
He didn't take the bait. "Your room is ready. Sheets are clean."
"How domestic of you." She pushed off from the counter and circled around him, her heels clicking a slow rhythm on the tile. "I love what you've done with the place. Very bachelor chic."
Connor turned back to his chopping. "It's a kitchen. It hasn't changed since you left."
"No, I suppose it hasn't." She was right behind him now, close enough that he could smell her perfume, something floral and expensive. "But some things have changed, haven't they? You've been busy."
His knife paused again. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing." She stepped back, and the refrigerator door opened. "Just making conversation. You know, catching up. It's been almost a year."
"You sent me a text at Christmas. That's not exactly catching up."
"I was busy." She pulled out a bottle of water and twisted off the cap. "College is demanding. Parties to attend, boys to break hearts. You understand."
Connor set down the knife and turned to face her fully. She was leaning against the refrigerator now, one hand on her hip, the water bottle pressed to her lips as she watched him over the rim. Her eyes held a glint of something he didn't trust.
"What are you really after, Larissa?"
She lowered the bottle slowly, her tongue darting out to catch a droplet on her lower lip, lingering there just a moment too long. "Can't a girl just want to spend time with her favorite stepbrother?"
"You've never wanted to spend time with me. You've made that very clear."
"People change." She shrugged, the motion making her tank top shift, revealing a glimpse of underwire beneath the hem. "I've been doing a lot of thinking this past year. About family. About connections. About the things we keep hidden."
The words hung in the air between them, weighted with implication. Connor felt a cold knot form in his stomach.
"What things?"
Larissa's smile widened, slow and predatory. She set down the water bottle and walked past him toward the hallway, her fingers trailing across the counter as she moved. "Oh, you know. Secrets. Everyone has them. Some are just more interesting than others."
She paused at the doorway, looking back over her shoulder, her body angled to accentuate the curve of her hips. "I'll be in my room if you need me. We can talk more later. Maybe after dinner, when we have some privacy."
She disappeared down the hallway, and her heels clicked up the stairs. Connor stood motionless in the kitchen, his hands gripping the edge of the counter as he processed what had just happened.
Something was wrong. Larissa had never been friendly toward him, not once in the three years since their parents married. She had treated him like an inconvenience, a stranger who happened to share her roof. The only times she acknowledged his existence were to complain about something or to make snide comments about his life.
This version of Larissa was different. Confident, calculating, and armed with something she thought he didn't know about.
He thought back to Christmas, when he had been home alone while their parents visited relatives. He had been careless, drinking too much, wandering around the house in his boxers. He hadn't thought anything of it until weeks later, when he noticed his phone had been moved from where he left it on the nightstand.
She must have taken photos. That was the only explanation for her smugness, her cryptic references to secrets. She had something on him, and she was planning to use it.
Connor finished preparing dinner mechanically, his mind racing through possibilities. He could confront her directly, demand to know what she had. But that would confirm her power, give her exactly the reaction she wanted. He could pretend ignorance, wait for her to make the first move. But that left him vulnerable, reactive.
Neither option appealed to him.
He plated the food and carried it to the dining room, where their parents were already seated. His mother smiled at him, and his stepfather nodded in greeting. Larissa was already at the table, sitting across from where Connor usually sat. She had changed into a sundress, thin and low-cut, the fabric clinging to her body as she settled into her chair.
"This looks wonderful, sweetheart," his mother said. "Larissa, isn't it nice to have Connor cooking for us again?"
"It's lovely." Larissa picked up her fork and twirled it through the pasta, her eyes meeting Connor's across the table. "I was just telling Connor that we should spend more time together this summer. Really reconnect."
His stepfather looked pleased. "That's a great idea. You two are practically strangers, and you share a house. It would be good for you to bond."
Connor forced a smile. "We'll see how it goes."
The meal passed with small talk about Larissa's classes, her friends, her plans for the summer. She was majoring in communications, she said, and she had big plans for her career. Connor listened with half an ear, watching her every gesture, every glance in his direction. Under the table, her bare foot brushed against his ankle, and she smiled into her wine glass when he stiffened.
She was playing him, he realized. She was laying the groundwork for something, establishing herself as the confident, desirable woman who could make his life hell if she chose to. The photos, whatever they showed, were her trump card.
But she had made a mistake. She had tipped her hand too early, shown him that she had something to hide. And that gave him time to prepare.
After dinner, Connor cleared the dishes while Larissa retreated to the living room with her phone. Her laughter carried through the house, her voice deliberately loud. She was making sure he knew she was relaxed, unbothered, in control.
He finished the dishes and walked past the living room on his way to his office. She was sprawled across the couch, her legs bare, her sundress riding up to reveal the curve of her ass, the edge of lace underwear barely visible. She looked up as he passed, her lips parted slightly.
"Going to hide in your cave already?"
"I have work to do."
"It's summer. Take a break." She stretched, arching her back like a cat, the fabric pulling tight across her breasts. "Come sit with me. We can watch a movie, catch up properly."
Connor paused at the doorway. "I don't trust you, Larissa. Whatever game you're playing, I'm not interested."
Her smile faltered for just a fraction of a second before she recovered. "Game? I'm not playing any game. I'm just trying to be nice."
"You've never been nice to me. Not once. So forgive me if I'm suspicious of your sudden change of heart."
He turned and walked away before she could respond, but her voice followed him down the hall.
"You'll come around. They always do."
Connor closed the door to his office and leaned against it, his heart pounding. He had to figure out what she had, what she was planning, and how to turn the tables. Because one thing was certain: he was not going to let his stepsister blackmail him into submission.
He sat down at his desk and opened his laptop, pulling up the security camera footage from the house. His parents had installed a system after a break-in last year, and Connor had access to all the feeds. He scrolled through the recordings from Christmas, looking for anything that might show Larissa in his room.
It took him twenty minutes, but he found it. A clip from the hallway camera showed Larissa slipping into his bedroom while he was in the shower. She emerged minutes later, holding his phone in her hand, a satisfied smile on her face. In the grainy footage, he could see her tapping the screen, scrolling, her expression one of focused concentration before that smug smile took over.
He had her. She had taken his phone, used it to photograph him while he was vulnerable, and then returned it. That was theft, invasion of privacy, and potentially blackmail. If he played this right, he could turn her own scheme against her.
Connor closed the laptop and leaned back in his chair, a slow smile spreading across his face. She thought she had the upper hand, that she could waltz in and take control of the household. She thought she was the predator.
But predators could become prey, if the hunter was patient enough.
He stood up and walked to the door, pausing with his hand on the handle. Tomorrow, he would start his counterattack. Tonight, he would let her believe she had won.
Let her be confident. Let her be smug. It would make the fall so much sweeter.
