First Inks
Sage Monroe paused on the sidewalk, one hand shielding her green eyes from the morning sun while the other clutched the strap of her messenger bag like a lifeline. The sign above the wide glass doors read Ink & Intimacy in sleek black lettering, the studio's reputation already making her pulse race. At twenty-five, she had inked hundreds of hours of practice skin and built a modest following as a cam girl who turned her body into living art, but this felt different. This was real. Professional. The chance to prove her lines, her shading, her vision mattered beyond late-night streams and private tips.
She rolled her shoulders, feeling the familiar tug of the small tattoo along her ribs, a delicate vine that disappeared beneath her cropped black tank top. Her curves filled out her dark jeans in a way that usually drew eyes, and today she had decided not to hide them. Body positive, she reminded herself. Talented. Ready. Still, her stomach fluttered with nerves as she pushed open the door.
The scent of antiseptic, fresh ink, and warm coffee wrapped around her immediately. The studio stretched long and open, with four tattoo stations separated by low partitions covered in framed flash art. Soft industrial lighting cast everything in clean, flattering tones. Music played low, something with a heavy bass that vibrated through the floor. Sage's boots clicked against the polished concrete as she stepped inside, her long wavy auburn hair swaying down her back.
A tall, muscular man emerged from the rear office like he owned every inch of the space, which, of course, he did. Damon Curtis. His short dark hair was neatly styled, his trimmed beard framing a mouth that looked like it rarely smiled. Full sleeves of intricate blackwork and color tattoos disappeared under the rolled cuffs of his charcoal button-down. Piercing blue eyes locked onto her, and Sage felt the impact low in her belly.
"You must be Sage," he said, voice low and commanding, the kind that demanded attention without raising volume. He extended his hand. "Damon Curtis. Your portfolio made the short list. Not many applicants can render movement the way you do."
She slid her palm into his. His grip was firm, warm, and it lingered a beat past professional. Calluses from years of holding tattoo machines brushed her skin. Sage's breath caught. His gaze dropped briefly to the freckles dusting her collarbones before returning to her face, intense and unreadable.
"Thank you," she replied, forcing her sass forward to cover the sudden heat in her cheeks. "I put everything I had into those pieces. Figured if I was going to beg for an apprenticeship, I'd better make it impossible to say no."
One corner of his mouth twitched. Not quite a smile, but close. His thumb swept once across her knuckle before he released her hand. The absence of his touch left her skin tingling.
"Confidence looks good on you," he said. "Come on. I'll give you the tour. The others are already here. We do things a little differently at Ink & Intimacy. Everyone meets new blood individually. No mobbing the fresh meat on day one."
Sage followed him, hyperaware of how his broad shoulders filled the walkway between stations. He moved with the quiet authority of someone who had built this place from the ground up. As they walked, he pointed out the sterilization area, the private piercing room, and the small lounge in back stocked with water, snacks, and a coffee station that smelled like heaven.
"We stay open late most nights," Damon continued, glancing back at her. His blue eyes caught hers again, holding longer than necessary. "Creativity doesn't punch a clock. You'll be expected to put in those hours if you want to learn everything we can teach you."
"I don't mind late nights," Sage answered, her voice playful. "I'm used to performing under pressure. Different kind of stage, but same idea. Show up, deliver, don't flinch."
His gaze sharpened. She watched his throat work as he swallowed. The air between them felt suddenly thicker, charged with something neither had named yet. He cleared his throat and gestured toward a station where a broad-shouldered man was organizing a tray of gleaming needles and jewelry.
"This is Levi Stone. Our resident piercing specialist and the steady hand that keeps the rest of us from burning out."
Levi straightened to his full height, and Sage had to tilt her head back. Warm brown skin, long dreads tied back in a neat bun, kind hazel eyes that crinkled at the corners when he smiled. His shoulders strained the soft gray henley he wore, but his presence felt calming rather than intimidating. A few minimalist tattoos peeked from his collar and wrists.
"Nice to finally meet you, Sage," Levi said softly. His voice was deep but gentle, like velvet over stone. He offered his hand, and when she took it, his fingers engulfed hers completely. The touch was careful, precise, as though he was already imagining how her skin would respond to pressure. He didn't let go right away. Instead, his thumb brushed the inside of her wrist, right over her pulse point. "I've seen the photos of your own work. The placement on your ribs is flawless. You understand anatomy."
Heat crawled up Sage's neck. His hazel eyes held hers with quiet intensity, reading her reaction. She wondered if he could feel how her pulse jumped under his thumb.
"Thank you," she managed, her usual sass softening under his soothing tone. "I've thought about getting more. Something meaningful. Maybe after I prove I belong here, I'll ask you to do it."
Levi's smile deepened. "I'd be honored. And between us, you already belong. Anyone who can make ink look that alive on practice skin has a place at our tables." His fingers gave one last gentle squeeze before releasing her. The loss of contact felt surprisingly disappointing.
Damon watched the exchange with hooded eyes but said nothing. He simply placed a hand at the small of Sage's back to guide her onward. The touch was light, yet it burned through the thin fabric of her tank top. She fought the urge to lean into it.
They rounded a partition to find the third man perched on a stool, adjusting settings on a professional camera. Theo Venice looked up, bright green eyes sparkling with immediate interest. Tousled blond hair fell across his forehead in that effortlessly stylish way. His lean, athletic build was showcased in well-fitted black jeans and a vintage band tee. A charming smile spread across his face as he set the camera aside.
"Well, hello, gorgeous," Theo drawled, hopping off the stool. "Theo Venice. Resident photographer, social media wrangler, and the one who makes sure the world sees how fucking talented we all are. Especially the new talent."
He didn't offer a handshake. Instead, he stepped close, close enough that Sage caught the scent of citrus and clean laundry, and brushed an imaginary speck of lint from her shoulder. His fingers grazed her bare skin, sending sparks racing down her arm. When he pulled back, his gaze traveled openly over her curves, her freckles, the visible edge of ink on her thigh where her jeans had ridden up. Appreciation, not judgment. The look made her feel seen in a way that tightened things low in her core.
"Those ribs tattoos of yours photographed beautifully in your submission photos," he continued, voice light but laced with genuine praise. "The way the light hits your skin? Chef's kiss. We're going to have so much fun capturing your progress here. If you're comfortable with it, of course."
Sage's lips curved into a teasing smile, her sassy side rising to meet his flirtation. "Comfortable is my middle name, Theo. I've been on camera plenty. Though I suspect your lens might be a little more... artistic than what I'm used to."
He laughed, low and warm. The sound curled pleasantly in her chest. Damon and Levi had drifted closer, forming a loose triangle around her. Three sets of eyes on her body. Three distinct energies, all humming with the same unmistakable spark. The realization sent a thrill through her that had nothing to do with professional orientation.
"All right," Damon said, cutting through the thickening tension with that commanding tone. "Enough flirting. Let's see what those hands can do, Sage. We've got fresh practice skin at my station. Show us something original. No stencils. Freehand."
Her nerves flared again, but determination won out. This was why she was here. Not the lingering touches or the way each man looked at her like she was already more than an apprentice. The art. She nodded and followed Damon to his station, aware of Levi and Theo trailing behind.
The chair creaked as she settled onto the stool. Damon handed her a fresh piece of practice skin stretched over a firm pad. The texture was smooth, realistic. She selected a machine, tested its weight, then closed her eyes for a moment to visualize. When she opened them, all three men were watching. Damon's arms were crossed over his broad chest. Levi leaned against the partition, calm and attentive. Theo had his camera in hand again, though he wasn't shooting yet.
Sage dipped the needle into black ink and began. She freehanded a flowing design, a stylized heart made of intertwined thorns and delicate flowers, symbolizing both beauty and resilience. The buzz of the machine filled the studio. Her lines were confident, smooth. She lost herself in the work, the familiar rhythm steadying her breathing. Shade built depth. Highlights caught imaginary light. Ten minutes passed. Twenty. She didn't look up until the last highlight was placed.
When she finally set the machine down, the silence felt heavy. Sage wiped the excess ink away and turned the practice skin so they could see it properly.
Damon leaned in first. His beard brushed close to her temple as he studied her work. She caught the faint scent of sandalwood and something darker. "Clean lines," he murmured, voice low enough that it vibrated through her. "Excellent flow. The way you've tapered these thorns shows real control. Not many apprentices come in with this level of understanding of negative space." His hand covered hers on the table for a moment, adjusting the angle of the pad. The touch lingered. His blue eyes met hers from inches away. "I'm impressed, Sage."
Heat flooded her face. Praise from him felt like sinking into warm water after a long day.
Levi moved in next, his broad frame casting her in gentle shadow. He traced one finger just above the design without touching the ink, following a curve. "Precise. Balanced. You've got a gentle touch with the shading here. Makes me think you'd be excellent with delicate piercings too." His hazel eyes lifted to hers, warm and steady. "This isn't just technical skill. There's heart in it. I like that."
Theo whistled softly, lifting his camera to snap a few quick shots of the finished piece. "Damn, sweetheart. Look at that composition. The way the light hits those highlights? This is going to photograph like a dream. You're going to make our socials explode once we start documenting your journey." He lowered the camera and gave her that charming grin again, but his green eyes held a deeper heat. "Beautiful work from a beautiful artist. You're going to fit in here just fine."
Sage sat back, adrenaline and validation mixing with the undeniable chemistry crackling between her and each man. Her body felt alive, every nerve ending aware of their proximity. Damon's commanding presence at her left, Levi's calming strength at her right, Theo's flirty energy directly across from her. She wondered if they felt it too, this strange, instant pull. Three very different men. One undeniable spark with each.
Damon straightened and retrieved a thick black folder from a nearby drawer. He set it in front of her, his fingers brushing hers again as he released it. "Your apprenticeship welcome packet. Studio policies, expectations, the non-disclosure agreement we all sign, schedule template. Read it tonight. Tomorrow we start you on basic prep work and observation. But after what I just saw? I've a feeling you'll be doing a lot more than fetching ink."
She accepted the packet, tracing the embossed studio logo with her thumb. "Thank you. All of you. I won't waste this opportunity. I want to learn everything. From all of you." The words carried more weight than she intended. Her gaze flicked between them, catching the way Damon's jaw tightened, how Levi's eyes darkened slightly, and how Theo's smile turned knowing.
"Good," Damon said, voice dropping into that instructional tone that made her thighs press together under the table. "Because we don't do halfway here, Sage. When we take someone on, we invest. Fully."
The implication hung in the air, subtle but electric. Playful banter had shifted into something heavier during the demonstration. Lingering touches. Intense gazes that promised more than mentorship. Sage's heart raced as she tucked the packet into her bag and stood.
She was here to become a better artist. To step out of the shadow of self-doubt that had followed her from cam rooms into this prestigious studio. Yet as she looked at the three men watching her with unmistakable hunger wrapped in professional approval, Sage felt the first stirrings of something much larger than an apprenticeship.
"I'll see you tomorrow then," she said, keeping her tone light even as her pulse thundered. "Try not to miss me too much."
Theo chuckled. Levi's smile was soft but heated. Damon's eyes tracked her as she moved toward the door, that commanding presence following her even after she stepped out into the sunlight.
Sage walked to her car on shaky legs, the welcome packet heavy in her bag and the memory of three distinct touches still burning on her skin. First day. First inks. And already, the lines between professional and personal had started to blur in the most delicious way.
She couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring.
