Warm Welcome
Ryan eased his car along the winding gravel drive, the familiar crunch under the tires stirring a wave of nostalgia that mixed uneasily with the uncertainty knotting his stomach. The lake house looked exactly as he remembered it from summers past. White clapboard siding glowed in the late afternoon sun, the wide porch wrapped around the front like an old friend waiting to pull him in. Pine trees swayed gently in the breeze off the water, and the air smelled of cut grass and that faint mineral tang from the lake. He had spent every July here as a kid, splashing in the shallows with cousins while his parents grilled on the deck. Now, at twenty-two and freshly graduated, the place felt different. Smaller, maybe. Or perhaps it was the reason for this visit that made everything tilt.
He parked beside the familiar blue pickup and killed the engine. His parents had mentioned Aunt Delilah would be staying here alone after the divorce. A messy split, they had said. Ryan had not seen her in almost two years, not since the last big family gathering before everything fell apart. He grabbed his duffel from the back seat and started up the porch steps, heart beating a little faster than the climb warranted.
The front door opened before he could knock. Delilah stood there in a pale yellow sundress that clung to her curves in a way that made him forget how to breathe for a second. The fabric dipped low at the neckline, revealing the smooth swell of her breasts and the sun-kissed skin of her chest. Thin straps left her shoulders bare, and the hem stopped well above her knees, showing long, toned legs. Her auburn hair fell in loose waves past her shoulders, catching the light with hints of copper. Green eyes met his, bright and alive, and a slow smile curved her lips. She looked radiant. Post-divorce glow, his mother had called it. Ryan saw it now. The tension that used to live around her mouth was gone, replaced by something freer, almost playful.
"Ryan," she said, voice warm and a little husky. "Look at you. Get over here."
She stepped forward and pulled him into a hug. Her arms wrapped around his neck, and the scent of her, something citrusy and warm, filled his senses. Her body pressed against his chest, soft and full, and the hug lingered. A beat too long. He felt the press of her breasts against him, the way her fingers rested at the nape of his neck. Heat crept up his face. He told himself it was just an aunt hugging her nephew after too long apart, but the way she held on made his pulse kick harder.
"It's good to see you, Aunt Delilah," he managed when she finally eased back. Her hands slid down his arms before letting go, fingertips brushing his skin.
"None of that 'Aunt' nonsense while you're here," she said, laughing softly. "Call me Delilah. Or Dee, if you want. We're both adults now." Her gaze flicked over him, taking in the lean muscle from campus sports, the short brown hair, the hazel eyes that matched his father's. "You've grown up so much. I barely recognize the skinny kid who used to cannonball off the dock."
Ryan shifted his duffel to his other hand, unsure what to do with the sudden warmth in his chest. "Yeah, well, college will do that. You look... great. Really great."
Her smile widened. "Flattery already. Come on inside. I've got dinner going, and I opened a bottle of wine. You can tell me all about graduation while we eat."
The kitchen smelled of garlic and tomatoes. A pot simmered on the stove, and two place settings waited on the big wooden table overlooking the lake. Delilah poured red wine into glasses and handed him one, her fingers brushing his again. They sat across from each other, the late sun slanting through the windows and turning the water outside into liquid gold.
Conversation flowed easily at first. Ryan talked about finishing his business degree, the job offers he was weighing, the relief of being done with exams. Delilah listened with genuine interest, leaning forward on her elbows so the neckline of her dress gaped just enough to draw his eyes before he forced them back up. She asked questions, laughed at his stories, and refilled his glass when it emptied. The wine loosened something in him, made the room feel warmer.
After a while she swirled her own glass and spoke more casually. "Your mom probably told you about the divorce. It was ugly for a bit, but it's done now. I'm free. No more pretending everything's fine when it's not." She took a sip, eyes distant for a moment before they cleared. "Honestly, I feel lighter than I have in years. Like I can finally breathe again."
Ryan nodded, not sure what to say. He had never known her ex well. "I'm sorry it happened," he offered.
She waved it off with a graceful flick of her wrist. "Don't be. It was time. And look at me now. I get the whole lake house to myself this summer. No one telling me what to do or how to dress." Her gaze met his over the rim of her glass. "It's nice having you here, though. Makes the place feel less empty."
The compliment landed softly, but it stayed with him. She saw him as more than the kid from family photos. They finished eating and moved to the living room with the rest of the wine. Delilah sat on the couch beside him rather than across, close enough that her bare knee brushed his leg when she shifted. The touch lingered, sending a spark up his thigh that he tried to ignore.
"You seem different too," she said after a comfortable silence. "More sure of yourself. Mature. I like that about you, Ryan. Most guys your age are still figuring out how to order a drink without blushing. You sit there like you belong in the room."
He felt the heat in his face again and took a sip of wine to cover it. "Thanks. I guess I don't feel like a kid anymore."
Delilah's hand rested on his forearm, thumb stroking once in a gesture that could have been innocent but felt anything but. "Good," she murmured. "I like a man who knows what he wants."
Outside, the sun dipped lower, painting the lake in shades of orange and pink. Ryan's mind raced with the feel of that lingering hug, the way her dress moved when she leaned, the quiet confidence in every word she spoke. This summer was supposed to be simple. Help around the house, relax, figure out his next steps. But sitting here with Delilah, the air thick with unspoken things, he already sensed the ground shifting beneath him. Her newfound freedom showed in every smile, every casual touch, and it pulled at something deep in him that he wasn't ready to name yet.
She stood to clear the glasses, and he watched the sway of her hips in that sundress, the way the fabric clung as she moved. When she glanced back over her shoulder, her eyes held a spark that made his breath catch. "I'm glad you're here, Ryan. Really glad."
The words settled over him like the warm evening air. He nodded, unable to look away, already wondering what the next day would bring.
