Arrival at the Lakeside House
The Uber dropped William Benning at the end of the long gravel drive, and he stood there for a moment with his duffel bag slung over one shoulder, staring at the sprawling lakeside house. It was bigger than he remembered from family photos, all clean lines and huge windows reflecting the late afternoon sun across the water. At nineteen, fresh off his first year of college, he felt both excited and out of place. His parents were halfway around the world on another business trip, and this was supposed to be a quiet summer of helping his aunt around the property. He wiped his palms on his jeans, took a breath, and started walking.
The front door opened before he reached it. Jade Keely stepped out onto the wide porch, and William nearly stumbled. She wore a thin white sundress that clung to her body in the breeze, the hem barely reaching mid-thigh and the neckline dipping low enough to reveal the smooth swell of her breasts. Her long wavy auburn hair was pulled back loosely, a few strands framing her face, and her striking blue eyes lit up when she saw him. At thirty-nine, she looked nothing like the distant, glamorous aunt from holiday visits. She looked like trouble.
"William," she called, her voice warm and a little husky. "You made it. Come here and give your aunt a proper hello."
He climbed the steps and she pulled him into a hug that lingered a second too long. Her body pressed against his, soft and warm, the scent of her perfume mixing with something like coconut oil. When she stepped back, her hands stayed on his arms, and she looked him over with an appreciative smile.
"Look at you," Jade said. "All grown up. College has been good to you. Those shoulders are filling out nicely."
William felt heat rise in his cheeks. "Thanks. It's good to see you too, Aunt Jade. The place looks amazing."
She waved a hand. "None of that 'Aunt Jade' business while you're here. Just Jade. We're both adults, aren't we?" Her eyes sparkled with something playful that made his stomach tighten. "Let me take that bag. Your room's ready upstairs."
She led him inside, and the house opened up into a bright, airy space with polished wood floors and modern furniture. Floor-to-ceiling windows faced the lake, where sunlight danced on the water. Jade moved with easy confidence, the dress shifting against her hips as she walked. William tried not to stare, but it was impossible not to notice how the fabric hugged every curve.
"I put you in the guest room overlooking the water," she said, starting up the wide staircase. "It's got its own bathroom and plenty of space for all those textbooks you probably brought."
William followed, watching the way her calves flexed with each step. "I didn't bring that many. Mostly clothes and my laptop. I'm supposed to be relaxing, right?"
Jade glanced back over her shoulder, catching him looking. A slow smile curved her lips. "Relaxing is exactly the plan. Though I might put you to work posing for me if the light is right. An artist needs good subjects."
They reached the landing and she pushed open a door. The room was large and comfortable, with a king-sized bed, a desk by the window, and a view straight out to the dock. Jade set his bag on the bed and turned to face him, close enough that he could feel the warmth radiating from her skin.
"Make yourself at home," she said, resting a hand lightly on his chest. "Unpack, settle in. When you're ready, I'll give you the full tour. There's a lot to see."
Her fingers lingered a moment longer than necessary before she pulled away. William swallowed, nodding. "Sure. Sounds good."
Alone in the room, he unpacked slowly, hanging shirts in the closet and setting his toiletries in the attached bathroom. The house felt different without his parents around, bigger and somehow charged. He splashed water on his face, trying to shake the flutter in his chest. Jade had always been the cool, artistic aunt, but this version of her, in that dress, with that touch, felt like something else entirely.
Downstairs, Jade was waiting in the kitchen, pouring two glasses of lemonade. She handed him one, her fingers brushing his. "Thirsty after the drive?"
"Yeah, thanks." He took a sip, the cold liquid grounding him a little.
She leaned against the counter, one hip cocked. "So tell me about college. Any wild stories yet? Girlfriends?"
William laughed, embarrassed. "Nothing serious. Mostly just studying and trying not to fail calculus. It's been... fine."
"Fine," Jade repeated, tilting her head. "We can do better than fine this summer. Come on, let's start the tour. I want you to feel like this place is yours too."
They moved through the living room first, where oversized sofas faced the lake and abstract paintings hung on the walls. Jade explained each one, her voice animated, standing close enough that her shoulder brushed his arm when she pointed. In the dining area, she rested a hand on the small of his back to guide him toward the window. The touch sent a spark up his spine.
"This is where I work on the big pieces when the light is good," she said, leading him into her studio next. Canvases leaned against the walls, and the smell of paint and turpentine hung in the air. Jade gestured to a half-finished landscape. "What do you think?"
William studied it, aware of her standing right beside him, the curve of her breast almost touching his arm. "It's beautiful. The colors feel alive."
She smiled, pleased. "Flattery will get you everywhere. I might have to sketch you while you're here. Those green eyes of yours would look striking on paper."
Heat crept up his neck again. "I don't know if I'd be any good at posing."
"We'll see," she murmured, and the way she said it made his pulse jump.
The tour continued downstairs to the lower level with a game room and a small gym. Jade stayed close the whole time, her hand occasionally grazing his elbow or resting on his shoulder as she pointed out details. By the time they reached the back deck overlooking the lake, the sun was lower, casting golden light across the water.
"This is my favorite spot," Jade said, stepping up behind him. She placed both hands on his shoulders, squeezing gently. "You can swim right off the dock. We should do that tomorrow. Work on your tan."
William felt the warmth of her palms through his shirt. "I'd like that."
She leaned in a little closer, her breath brushing his ear. "Good. I think we're going to have a very nice summer together, William. Very nice indeed."
He turned his head slightly and met her eyes. There was a spark there, teasing and knowing, that made him wonder exactly what she meant. Jade smiled, slow and inviting, then stepped back, leaving the air between them charged.
"Dinner's simple tonight," she said, heading back inside. "Grilled fish and salad. Come help me with the grill and we can talk more about what you want to do while you're here."
William followed, his nerves mixing with a new kind of anticipation. The house felt warmer now, full of possibility. As Jade moved around the kitchen, the light fabric of her dress shifting with every step, he couldn't help wondering how much of that possibility she already had in mind.
