The Favor

Darnell Kellter stared at his phone as it buzzed on the kitchen counter. Mrs. Whitelock's name glowed on the screen. He wiped his hands on his jeans before answering, already knowing he would say yes before she even asked. That was how it had always been with the Whitelocks. They were family in every way that mattered except blood.

"Hello?" he said, keeping his voice casual.

"Nate, honey, it's Dee." Her voice carried that same warm tone he had known since he was twelve, the one that could make burnt cookies sound like a feast. "I hate to bother you, but with Mark gone for the whole semester, I'm a little stuck here. The back fence is falling down again, and the pool filter keeps shutting off. Any chance you could come by this weekend and take a look? I'd pay you, of course."

He did not need the money. What he needed was the excuse to be in that house again. Mark had only been in Spain for three weeks, but the neighborhood felt different without his best friend cracking jokes and dragging him into trouble. "You don't have to pay me, Mrs. Whitelock. You know that. I'll come by tomorrow morning if that works."

She exhaled with obvious relief. "You're a lifesaver. Really. I don't know what I'd do without you."

They exchanged a few more pleasantries before hanging up. Darnell set the phone down and leaned against the counter. The Whitelocks had been his second home since middle school. Mr. Whitelock had left when Darnell was fifteen, and Mrs. Whitelock had never let the divorce dim her smile for long. She showed up at every one of their baseball games, baked cupcakes for fundraisers, and kept the fridge stocked with Darnell's favorite soda. She was the mom who actually listened when you complained about school or girls or whatever was bothering you that week.

But she was also the woman who had started appearing in his dreams lately. Darnell pushed the thought away. That was just because he was twenty and horny and she happened to be beautiful. It did not mean anything. She was Mark's mom. End of story.

The next morning he loaded his toolbox into the back of his truck and drove the three blocks to the Whitelock house. The late summer sun already beat down hard enough to make the asphalt shimmer. He parked in the driveway, grabbed his tools, and walked around to the side gate like he had done a hundred times before. Only this time his pulse felt a little too quick.

"Mrs. Whitelock?" he called out as he stepped into the backyard.

The sliding glass door opened and she stepped out onto the patio. Darnell's grip tightened on the handle of his toolbox. She wore black yoga pants that hugged every curve of her hips and thighs like they had been painted on. A tight white tank top clung to her full breasts, the thin fabric doing nothing to hide the outline of her bra or the smooth valley of cleavage at her neckline. Her long dark hair was pulled up in a messy ponytail, a few strands sticking to her neck from the heat. Those piercing green eyes lit up when she saw him.

"Nate! You came." She crossed the patio in bare feet, her hips swaying with each step. The yoga pants left nothing to the imagination. Darnell forced his gaze up to her face.

"Of course I did," he said, hoping his voice sounded normal. "Can't have you living with a broken fence. Someone might sneak in and steal all those trophies Mark never dusts."

She laughed, a rich, throaty sound that sent an unwelcome jolt through him. "God, it's quiet without him here. I keep expecting to hear that awful rap music blasting from his room." She gestured toward the fence at the back of the property. "It's the middle section again. The posts are rotting. And the pool filter keeps throwing an error code I don't understand."

Darnell nodded and followed her across the yard. He tried not to notice the way the yoga pants stretched across her ass as she walked. The fabric molded to her like a second skin, highlighting the generous swell of her backside and the strong lines of her thighs. She was forty-four but looked better than most girls his own age. Years of real estate work and weekend yoga had kept her body toned and voluptuous at the same time.

"I really appreciate this," she said, glancing back at him. A bead of sweat already traced down her throat and disappeared between her breasts. "I know you're busy with your own life. College starting back up soon?"

"Not for another two weeks. Plenty of time to play handyman." He set his toolbox down beside the sagging section of fence. The wood was soft and splintered where it met the ground. Easy enough to fix. "Mark texted me yesterday from Barcelona. Said something about chasing some girl named Sofia around the Gothic Quarter."

Dee rolled her eyes but smiled. "That sounds like my son. I told him to focus on his studies, but we both know how that goes." She crouched down beside him to look at the damage, her tank top dipping low enough that Darnell caught a full view of her cleavage. The soft, pale skin looked smooth and inviting in the morning light. He swallowed hard and looked back at the fence.

"He's having fun. That's what matters, right?" Darnell pulled out a pry bar and began working the rotten board loose. The physical work helped. It gave his hands something to do besides shake.

She stayed close, watching him work. "I suppose. Still, the house feels too big with just me in it. I find myself talking to the plants like some crazy lady." Her laugh this time was softer, almost self-conscious. "Pathetic, I know."

"Not pathetic," he said quickly. "Just... different. You've always had the two of us underfoot. Must be strange having all this peace and quiet." He pried the board free and tossed it aside. The fresh wood he had brought smelled sharp and clean in the heat.

Dee stood up and brushed dirt from her hands. The motion made her breasts shift beneath the thin tank top. Darnell felt a flush creep up his neck that had nothing to do with the sun. He had known this woman for eight years. She had helped him with algebra. She had driven them to prom. Why the hell was his body reacting like this now?

"Let me get you some lemonade," she said. "It's already getting hot out here. Can't have my favorite handyman passing out from dehydration."

Before he could protest she disappeared inside. Darnell took the moment to adjust himself discreetly in his jeans. This was ridiculous. She was being nice. Maternal. That was all. He had no business noticing the way her nipples had started to show faintly through her tank top as the breeze picked up. No business at all.

She returned a few minutes later carrying two tall glasses beaded with condensation. The lemonade was the perfect tart-sweet balance he remembered from a hundred summer afternoons. They sat on the edge of the patio while he drank, the cold glass feeling good against his palm.

"So tell me about your summer," she said, tucking one leg beneath her. The yoga pants stretched even tighter across her thighs. "Any girls I should know about? Mark mentioned someone named Lauren a few weeks ago."

Darnell nearly choked on his drink. "Lauren? No. That was just... we hung out a couple times. Nothing serious." He did not want to talk about girls with Mrs. Whitelock. Not when every shift of her body kept pulling his attention lower. "What about you? Any exciting real estate deals? Selling any mansions to billionaires?"

She smiled but it did not quite reach her eyes. "A few closings. Nothing exciting. The market's been slow, which means I've had too much time to think." She ran a finger around the rim of her glass. "I joined one of those book clubs. Mostly just an excuse for wine, if I'm honest. The women there are nice but... they're all married with kids still at home. Sometimes I feel like the odd one out."

The loneliness in her voice caught him off guard. He had never heard her sound quite like that before. Dee Whitelock was the woman who had it together. Always smiling, always hosting barbecues, always the first to volunteer. Hearing the quiet admission made something twist in his chest.

"You're not odd," he said. "You're... you. People love being around you. Mark and I used to fight over who got to sit next to you at movie nights, remember?"

She laughed again, warmer this time. "You two were ridiculous. Always trying to impress me with your terrible jokes." Her green eyes studied him for a moment. "You've grown up so much, Nate. I still see that skinny twelve-year-old sometimes, but then you show up looking like this and it throws me."

Looking like this. The words hung between them. Darnell felt his face heat. He drained the rest of his lemonade and stood up too fast. "I should get back to the fence. Those posts won't fix themselves."

They worked side by side for the next hour. Dee held boards in place while he drilled screws. The proximity was dangerous. Every time she leaned over to steady a post, her breast would brush against his arm. The contact was brief, accidental, but it sent electricity racing across his skin. She smelled like vanilla and sunscreen and something warmer underneath. Woman. The thought popped into his head before he could stop it.

"Careful with that drill," she teased when he fumbled a screw. "I don't need you putting holes in anything important."

"Wouldn't dream of it," he shot back, grateful for the easy banter. This was familiar territory. "Though Mark would probably say I already have holes in my head for agreeing to this."

"Mark owes you big time. He's lucky to have a friend like you." She straightened up and stretched, arms over her head. The tank top rode up to reveal a strip of smooth stomach and the waistband of her yoga pants sitting low on her hips. A small tattoo Darnell had never noticed before peeked out just above the fabric. Some kind of delicate script.

He forced his attention back to his work. The fence was coming together nicely. The new posts stood straight and solid. But the pool filter was another story. They moved over to the equipment shed after a while, and Dee bent down to show him the control panel. Her ass was inches from his face as she pointed at the error code. The yoga pants left nothing to the imagination. He could see the faint outline of her panties underneath the stretchy material.

Darnell stood up quickly and stepped back. "I think the pump's just clogged. Should be an easy fix." His voice came out rougher than he intended.

She turned to face him. A strand of dark hair had escaped her ponytail and clung to her cheek. She brushed it away, leaving a smudge of dirt on her skin. Without thinking he reached out and wiped it off with his thumb. The contact surprised them both. Her skin felt impossibly soft.

"Sorry," he muttered, dropping his hand. "You had a little..."

"Thank you." Her voice was quieter now. Those green eyes held his for a beat longer than necessary. "It's nice having someone here to help. To talk to. I didn't realize how much I missed it until you showed up."

The air between them felt thicker suddenly. Darnell cleared his throat and grabbed his tools again. "Happy to help. Really. You guys have always been there for me. Least I can do."

They finished the fence and got the pool filter running again just as the sun reached its peak. Sweat soaked through Darnell's t-shirt, making it cling to his lean, athletic frame. He caught Dee's eyes drifting across his chest once or twice. Maybe he was imagining it. Maybe not.

"Stay for lunch?" she asked as they packed up. "It's the least I can do after all this hard work. I made chicken salad yesterday. We could eat by the pool."

He should say no. He should go home and take a cold shower and remind himself whose mother she was. Instead he heard himself answer, "Yeah. That sounds good."

They sat at the patio table under the umbrella. The chicken salad was perfect, just like everything she made. They talked about Mark's latest adventures abroad, about Darnell's upcoming classes, about her latest listing in the hills. Normal conversation. Comfortable. But underneath it all ran a new current. Every time their eyes met, something unspoken passed between them.

Dee leaned back in her chair, crossing her legs. The yoga pants whispered against each other. "You know, I was serious earlier. The house does feel different without him. Without both of you, really. You've been part of this family since you were a kid, Nate. I hope that doesn't change just because you're both growing up."

"It won't," he said. But even as the words left his mouth, he knew something already had changed. The way he saw her had shifted. The respectful boy-next-door who had once viewed her as a second mother now could not stop noticing the fullness of her breasts, the curve of her waist, the way her lips wrapped around the straw of her lemonade.

She smiled at him, soft and grateful, and for a moment he saw the loneliness again behind her eyes. A woman who had given everything to her son and her career, now facing an empty house and years of nights alone. The realization hit him harder than it should have.

"Well," she said finally, standing up to clear the plates. "I should let you get home. But please come back anytime. The fence looks amazing, and the pool is actually functional again. You're my hero."

"Anytime," he replied, meaning it more than she knew.

As he loaded his tools back into the truck, Darnell glanced toward the house one last time. Dee stood in the doorway watching him, one hand resting on the frame. The tight tank top and yoga pants still hugged her body like an invitation he had no right to consider. She raised her hand in a small wave.

He waved back and climbed into the truck, heart pounding harder than the work could explain. The drive home took only three minutes, but in that short distance Darnell replayed every accidental touch, every lingering look, every quiet admission of loneliness. He told himself it was nothing. Just a hot day and a beautiful woman and too much time alone with his thoughts.

But as he pulled into his own driveway, he could not shake the feeling that something had begun. Something that would not be easy to stop. And the worst part was, he was not sure he wanted to.
