First Positions

Sara Parker adjusted the strap of her dance bag and took a steadying breath before ringing the bell. The Torrence home sat at the end of a quiet cul de sac, all warm brick and manicured hedges, exactly the kind of house she had grown up envying. The kind of house where families stayed together, where anniversaries were celebrated with surprise dances instead of silent dinners.

Nicole answered before the second chime faded, her face bright with excitement. She pulled Sara into a quick hug, the familiar scent of her vanilla perfume wrapping around them. "You're here. Oh my god, I'm so excited. He's finishing a call, but I told him to clear his whole afternoon. For this. For us."

Sara let herself be pulled inside, her eyes adjusting to the warm light of the foyer. The living room opened before her, hardwood floors gleaming, furniture arranged for comfort rather than show. She catalogued the space automatically. Twelve feet of clear floor. Good sight lines from the kitchen. A chandelier that would catch the light beautifully during a turn.

"It's perfect," she said, and she meant it.

Nicole bounced on her heels. "I know. I've been moving furniture around in my head for weeks. Mom's going to cry. Dad's going to pretend he's not emotional, but he will be."

Sara smiled, keeping her face neutral. She had known Nicole since their sophomore year of college, had been over for dinner a dozen times, had met Josh Torrence in passing. He was always polite, always slightly distant. The kind of father who greeted his daughter's friends with a firm handshake and then disappeared into his study with a glass of whiskey.

She remembered his hands. She remembered thinking they looked strong, capable. A lawyer's hands. The memory had stayed with her longer than it should have.

Stop it. He's your best friend's father. He's married. This is a job.

She pulled out her phone, opened her choreography notes. The routine was simple. Elegant. A few basic turns, some frame work, a dip that would make Evie gasp. It was more about connection than steps, and that was the part that made her nervous.

"I've been working on something that should be manageable for beginners," she said, her voice steady. "It's about the story they'll tell through the movement. The years together. The trust."

Nicole's eyes went soft. "That's exactly what I told him. It's about the connection."

Footsteps on the stairs. Heavy. Measured. Sara looked up.

Josh Torrence descended into the foyer, and for the first time she let herself really look at him. He wore a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows, revealing forearms dusted with salt and pepper hair. His jaw was clean shaven, his dark eyes finding hers immediately and holding them.

He didn't smile. He just looked at her like he was seeing something he hadn't expected to find.

"Sara. Good to see you again."

His voice was lower than she remembered. Smoother. It wrapped around her name and lingered, turning a simple greeting into something that felt intimate.

She straightened, suddenly aware of her posture, the way her blouse fell across her chest, the curve of her hips in her fitted pants. "Mr. Torrence. Thank you for doing this. It's going to be special."

"Nicole's convinced." He stepped into the room, and she caught his scent. Something woodsy and clean. Expensive. "I'm told I just need to follow your lead."

"That's the general idea."

Nicole clapped her hands. "Perfect. I'll leave you two to figure out the basics. I have errands to run. Josh, be nice. Sara, don't let him be difficult."

She was gone before either of them could respond, the front door clicking shut behind her.

Silence fell between them, thick and charged.

Sara felt heat creep up her neck. She turned toward the living room, spreading her arms. "We'll want more space than this for the full routine, but for today, this should work. Can we push the coffee table back?"

He moved to help her, his shoulder brushing hers as they each took an end of the heavy oak table. The contact sent a jolt through her, sharp and unexpected. She stepped back quickly, her heart hammering.

"Sorry," she said. "Occupational hazard. I'm used to having space between me and my students."

"It's fine." He straightened, and there was a knowing quality in his expression. A quiet acknowledgment that told her he had felt it too. "What do you need from me?"

She ran through her mental checklist, forcing her voice to stay level. "Comfortable shoes. Loose clothing. And a willingness to look a little foolish while we practice."

"I think I can manage the first two." The corner of his mouth twitched. "The third might take some work."

She laughed despite herself. The tension in her shoulders eased slightly. "Okay then. Let's start with the basic frame."

She stepped toward him, and he met her halfway. She positioned herself in front of him, her back to his chest for the initial hold. His palms settled on her waist, fingers spreading wide, covering more of her than she had expected. The warmth of his hands pressed through the thin cotton of her blouse with a weight that felt deliberate.

Her breath caught.

"Like this?" His voice was low, right at her ear. The warmth of his breath touched her neck.

She swallowed, her mouth suddenly dry. "A little higher. And I need your left hand to hold mine, extended out to the side."

He adjusted, his palm sliding up her rib cage, his thumb brushing the curve of her breast before he took her hand. His fingers laced with hers, warm and sure. The contact sent a shiver down her spine.

"Right. And the other hand goes where?"

She turned her head slightly, meeting his eyes over her shoulder. They were dark, intense, focused entirely on her. "On my shoulder blade. You'll guide me from there."

His hand found the spot, pressing flat against her back. The heat of his palm seeped through the fabric, steady and heavy. His fingers spread wide, and she could feel each one individually, like brands against her skin.

"Like this?"

Her heart was pounding so hard she was sure he could feel it. She forced herself to breathe evenly. "Yes. Good. Now we start with a basic box step. I lead, you follow. Just feel the movement."

She began to move, and he moved with her. Slowly at first, his steps uncertain, his body learning the rhythm. But within moments, he was responsive, adjusting to her tempo, matching her energy.

"You've done this before," she said.

"Not in years. It's coming back." His grip on her waist tightened slightly as they turned. She felt the pull of his fingers, guiding her even though she was supposed to be leading. "You're very good at this."

"I've had practice."

"I can tell."

She could feel the truth of it in the rigid line of his arm, the controlled strength in his frame. He was holding himself back, she realized. Every movement was measured, careful, like he was afraid of breaking her.

"Relax your shoulders," she said. "You're holding tension."

"I'm trying."

She reached up with her free hand and pressed lightly against his chest. The muscle beneath his shirt was firm, warm. "Breathe. It's just a dance."

He looked down at her, and for a moment, the professional distance between them cracked. She saw a flicker in his dark eyes. A hunger that made her stomach clench.

"I know what it is," he said quietly.

They continued the basic steps. Forward, side, together. Back, side, together. The rhythm settled into her bones, and she let herself feel the way his body moved against hers. Solid. Warm. Present in a way that made her aware of every point of contact between them.

His chest against her back. His hand in hers. The heat of his palm on her shoulder blade seeping through her blouse.

She was acutely aware of the space between her thighs, the ache that was building there. She pressed her legs together subtly, trying to ignore it.

"You're a good dancer," she said, her voice slightly breathless.

"I have a good teacher." His voice was a rumble against her back. She felt it in her spine, in her chest, in the hollow of her throat. "You make it easy to follow you."

The compliment landed somewhere deep in her belly. She cleared her throat. "Let's try a turn. I'll signal by lifting our joined hands. You'll turn under my arm, and then we'll return to frame."

"Got it."

She lifted their hands, and he turned smoothly, his body rotating close to hers before settling back into position. But when he came back to her, his hands found her hips instead of her waist.

She inhaled sharply.

"Sorry," he said, but he didn't move his hands immediately. His fingers pressed into the curve of her hips, holding her like he was memorizing the shape of her. "I lost my place."

"It's fine. Just a little higher."

He slid his hands up slowly, his thumbs grazing the underside of her breasts before he settled at her shoulder blades again. The touch was deliberate. She knew it was deliberate. She could feel the intention behind every millimeter of that slide.

She should say something. She should correct him, maintain the boundary, remind him that she was a professional and he was a client and this was her best friend's father.

Instead, she said, "Again. From the top."

They danced.

The afternoon light shifted through the windows, casting long golden shadows across the floor. She lost track of time, lost track of the steps, lost track of everything except the heat of his body and the way his hands seemed to find new places to linger with each repetition.

His thumb traced her spine. His fingers pressed into her waist. The warmth of his breath touched her neck, and the steady rhythm of his heartbeat against her back became the only clock she cared about.

She was soaked. She could feel the dampness between her legs, the ache that had settled low in her belly, the way her nipples had hardened against the fabric of her bra. She had never reacted to a student like this. Never. But he wasn't a student. He was Josh. And he was looking at her like he wanted to devour her.

"We should stop," she said, her voice barely steady.

"Already?" His hands didn't leave her body. If anything, they tightened slightly, pulling her closer.

"Your wife will be home soon."

It was the wrong thing to say. She saw something flash in his eyes. Guilt mixed with anger mixed with hunger, all of it swirling together in a way that made her breath catch.

"Right," he said, stepping back. The cold air rushed in where his body had been, and she felt the absence like a physical loss. "Of course."

She gathered her things, her hands trembling as she stuffed her phone and notebook into her bag. She could feel his gaze on her back, heavy and hot, tracking her every movement.

"Same time tomorrow?" she asked, not turning around.

"If that works for you."

"It does."

She walked to the door, and he followed. She could feel him behind her, close enough to touch, and she wanted him to. She wanted him to reach out and pull her back, to press her against the wall and show her exactly what that look in his eyes meant.

She turned at the door.

He stood in the doorway of the living room, his hands in his pockets, his expression unreadable. But his eyes. His eyes were dark and hungry and full of promises she wasn't sure she was ready to keep.

"Thank you for today," he said.

"Of course, Mr. Torrence."

His eyes darkened. "Josh."

She nodded, not trusting her voice, and stepped out into the cool evening air.

The door clicked shut behind her, and she leaned against it for a moment, her heart racing, her body burning. She pressed her hand to her chest, feeling the wild beat of her pulse.

What have I gotten myself into?

But she already knew the answer. She was going to find out. And she was terrified of how much she wanted to.

Her phone buzzed. A text from Nicole.

How did it go? Is he hopeless?

Sara typed back, her fingers unsteady.

He's a natural. Tomorrow's session will be longer.

She hit send and walked to her car, the ghost of his hands still warm on her skin.

Counting the Beats

The second rehearsal came three days later, and Sara had spent every one of those nights replaying the feel of his hands on her waist.

She told herself it was professional curiosity. The natural adjustment period when two bodies learned to move together. Nothing more.

But when she parked in front of the Torrence home and saw his car already in the driveway, her pulse quickened in a way that had nothing to do with choreography.

Nicole met her at the door with a hug and an apology. "I'm so sorry, I have to take these calls for the catering. Mom's being impossible about the menu, and I swear she's changed her mind three times." She grabbed her phone from the hall table. "Dad's already in the living room. You guys start without me, I'll be there as soon as I can."

Sara's stomach tightened. "Sure. No problem."

Nicole squeezed her arm. "You're a lifesaver. Seriously." Then she was gone, disappearing down the hallway with her phone pressed to her ear.

Sara stood in the foyer for a moment, listening to the distant murmur of Nicole's voice, the click of a door closing somewhere deep in the house. She was alone with him. Not technically. Nicole was here. But she might as well have been on another planet.

She walked toward the living room, her heels silent on the hardwood. The french doors were partially open, and she could see him standing by the windows, his back to her, phone in hand. He wore dark gray slacks and a white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows. The sight of his forearms made her mouth go dry.

He turned at the sound of her footsteps, and something flickered in his eyes. Recognition. Awareness. The same current she'd felt three days ago, still live between them.

"Ms. Parker." His voice was low, controlled.

"Mr. Torrence." She stepped through the doors. "Nicole's on the phone. Catering issues."

"Ah." A slight smile crossed his face. "Evie's been planning this party for six months. She's very particular."

"I gathered." Sara set her bag down by the sofa and pulled out her tablet. "We can start with some basic warm-ups if you want. Loosen up before we get into the actual steps."

"Whatever you think is best." He set his phone on the mantle and turned to face her fully. "I'm in your hands."

The words landed somewhere deep in her chest. She ignored it. "Let's start with some simple stretches. Reach for the ceiling, then roll down slowly."

He followed her instructions, and she watched him, cataloging the way his body moved. The breadth of his shoulders, the taper to his waist, the kind of build that suggested he'd been athletic once, maybe still was in his own way. His movements were deliberate, controlled.

"Good," she said. "Now side stretches. Reach over with your right arm."

He complied, and she stepped closer to adjust his position, her hands hovering near his ribs. "You're holding tension here. Try to breathe into the stretch."

He exhaled slowly, and she watched his chest expand, the fabric of his shirt pulling tight across his shoulders.

"Better," she said, stepping back. "Now let's work on the basic box step. Remember from last time?"

"I remember." His eyes met hers. "I remember everything."

The air between them thickened. Sara swallowed. "Good. Then let's practice. I'll lead first so you can feel the pattern."

She moved into position, and he followed, his hand settling on her waist, his other hand taking hers. This time, his grip was firmer. More certain.

"One-two-three, one-two-three," she counted softly, stepping backward. He followed, his body close, his breath warm on her forehead. "Good. You're getting it."

"I have a good teacher."

She looked up at him, and the intensity in his gaze made her stumble. His hand tightened on her waist, steadying her.

"Easy," he murmured. "I've got you."

"Sorry." She shook her head, forcing herself to focus. "Let's try again. One-two-three."

They moved together, and this time she let herself feel it. The way his hand pressed against her lower back, guiding her. The way his thighs brushed hers with each step. The way his eyes never left her face.

"You're very quiet," he said after a few minutes of circling the room.

"I'm concentrating."

"On what?"

She met his gaze. "On teaching you the dance."

"And what else?"

Her breath caught. "Nothing else."

He pulled her slightly closer, just a fraction of an inch. "Liar."

The word was soft, almost affectionate. It sent heat racing up her spine.

"Mr. Torrence."

"Josh." He turned her under his arm, and when she came back to face him, she was closer than before. "We're alone, Sara. You can use my name."

She should have corrected him. Should have reminded him of professional boundaries. Instead, she said nothing, letting him pull her back into the dance.

They moved through the steps again, and this time his corrections came in whispers. "Your hand should be higher on my shoulder." His fingers brushed hers, adjusting her grip. "You're holding your breath. Breathe with me." His chest pressed against hers as they inhaled together.

Each touch was deliberate. Each whispered instruction a pretext for proximity.

"You're doing well," she said, her voice steadier than she felt.

"I'm trying." His hand slid from her waist to the small of her back, pulling her closer as they turned. "Is this right?"

"It's... closer." She could feel the heat of his body through his shirt, the solid muscle of his chest. "But you're leading with your shoulders. You need to lead with your hips."

"Show me."

The request was simple. Professional. But the way he said it made her thighs clench.

She stopped moving and placed her hands on his hips. "When you step forward, your hips should initiate the movement. Like this." She pressed gently, guiding him through the motion. "Feel the difference?"

He was still. Too still. "Yes."

She looked up at him, and his eyes were dark, fixed on her mouth. Her hands were still on his hips. She should let go. She didn't.

"Sara." His voice was rough. "What are we doing?"

"Teaching you a dance."

"Is that all?"

She swallowed. "That's all it can be."

He reached up and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, his fingers lingering on her cheek. "You're a terrible liar."

"Josh." His name on her lips felt like a confession. "Nicole is your daughter. She's my best friend. She trusts me."

"I know." His thumb traced her jawline, featherlight. "I know all of that."

"Then why are you doing this?"

"Because I can't stop thinking about you." The words came out raw, unguarded. "I've been married for twenty-eight years, Sara. I know what duty feels like. I know what obligation feels like. And I know what this feels like." He stepped closer, his hand still on her face. "I haven't felt this in a very long time."

Her heart was pounding so hard she was sure he could feel it. "We can't."

"I know." But he didn't move. His hand slid from her face to her neck, his thumb resting at the base of her throat. "Tell me you don't feel it too, and I'll stop."

She opened her mouth. Closed it. The lie wouldn't come.

His eyes softened. "That's what I thought."

He released her and stepped back, and the loss of his touch was physical, a hollow ache in her chest.

"We should continue the rehearsal," he said, his voice returning to its controlled register. "Before Nicole comes back."

Sara nodded, her hands trembling. "Yes. The rehearsal."

They fell back into position, his hand on her waist, hers on his shoulder. But everything had shifted. The air between them was charged, electric, every brush of fabric a reminder of what they'd almost said.

They moved through the steps in silence, their bodies speaking a language their mouths couldn't. His hand pressed her closer on the turns. Her fingers tightened on his shoulder. Each rotation brought them chest to chest, hip to hip, and neither of them pulled away.

"You're a natural," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I have excellent motivation."

She looked up at him, and the hunger in his eyes mirrored her own. "What do you want from me, Josh?"

He stopped moving, his hands still on her. "Everything."

The word hung between them, heavy and impossible.

"I can't give you everything," she said. "I can't give you anything. Not without hurting Nicole. Not without hurting your wife."

"I know." He pulled her closer, his lips brushing her ear. "But that doesn't change what I want."

She shivered, her hands gripping his shoulders. "This is dangerous."

"I know."

"If anyone finds out—"

"They won't." His voice was firm, certain. "I'll make sure of it."

She should have pushed him away. Should have ended this before it went any further. But when he looked at her like that, with that quiet intensity, she felt seen in a way she never had before.

"One more time," she said, her voice shaking. "From the top."

He smiled, slow and knowing. "As you wish."

They danced again, and this time she let herself feel everything. The strength in his arms. The heat of his body. The way his breath caught when her hips brushed against his. She memorized every detail, knowing she'd replay them later, alone in her bed.

When they finished, they stood still, chests heaving, eyes locked.

"Same time Thursday?" she asked, her voice barely steady.

"I'll be here."

She gathered her bag, her tablet, her composure. At the door, she paused, looking back at him. He was still standing in the middle of the room, watching her, his hands in his pockets.

"Josh."

"Yes?"

"I feel it too."

His smile was slow, devastating. "I know."

She walked out of the house and didn't look back. But she felt his gaze on her the entire way, a heat that followed her home and kept her awake long into the night.

After Hours

The house settled into its nightly quiet around them. Sara heard the central air click off, leaving only the soft hum of the refrigerator somewhere below. She stood at the edge of the living room, her dance bag slung over one shoulder, watching Josh lock the front door with deliberate slowness.

"Nicole's definitely asleep," he said, turning the deadbolt. "She texted me from her room a little while ago."

Sara nodded, her throat tight. "So we have the place to ourselves."

"Until morning, if we want."

The words hung in the air between them, heavy with promise. She had known this was coming. Had felt it building since the moment his hands first settled on her waist. Every practice session had been a slow burn, a careful escalation of touch and eye contact and whispered instruction that meant more than the steps they were learning.

But tonight felt different. Tonight there was no clock watching, no fear of interruption. Just the two of them and the empty house.

"We should warm up," she said, her voice steadier than she felt. "Properly this time."

Josh crossed the room to her, his footsteps muffled by the thick area rug. He stopped close enough that she could smell the faint cedar of his cologne, could see the silver threading through his dark hair at his temples.

"Whatever you say, Ms. Parker."

The formal address sent a shiver through her. She turned away from him to set her phone in the speaker dock, scrolling through her playlist until she found something slow and instrumental. The first notes filled the space, a sultry piano melody that seemed made for what was about to happen.

She faced him again. "Take my hand."

He did. His palm was warm and dry, his fingers wrapping around hers with a firmness that made her stomach flip. She guided his other hand to her lower back, feeling the heat of his palm through her thin tank top.

"This is a frame," she said, adjusting his arm. "You want to keep your elbow up, your shoulders relaxed."

"Like this?" He pulled her closer, his voice a low rumble.

"Closer," she heard herself say. "For this part, you need to be able to feel my breath."

His chest met hers. The contact was electric, a current that ran from her breasts to her core. She could sense the solidness of him, the way his body seemed to fit against hers like it had been waiting for this.

"Better," she breathed.

They began to move. Not the choreographed steps they had been practicing for Nicole's surprise, but something slower, more intimate. A swaying that had nothing to do with music and everything to do with the tension that had been building between them for weeks.

Josh's hand slid from her back to her hip, his fingers spreading wide over the curve. "You're trembling."

"I know."

"Are you nervous?"

"No." She looked up at him, meeting those dark eyes that seemed to see straight through her. "I'm ready."

Something shifted in his gaze. The careful control he always wore cracked, just slightly, and she saw the hunger underneath. It mirrored her own.

They moved together through the living room, past the couch where Nicole had sat just hours ago, past the piano where Evie sometimes played in the evenings. The house was full of reminders of his family, of the life he lived here, and that knowledge only made the heat between them burn hotter.

The mirrored wall at the end of the room caught their reflection. Sara watched them move together, saw the way his hands looked on her body, the way she tilted into him like a flower seeking sun. She looked like a woman on the edge of something she couldn't stop.

"Look at us," she whispered.

Josh's gaze followed hers to the mirror. His jaw tightened. "I've been looking at you for weeks."

"I know."

"Do you know how hard it's been?" His voice was rough. "Standing here, touching you, pretending it's just about the dance?"

"I've been pretending too."

He stopped moving. His hands tightened on her hips, pulling her flush against him. She felt the evidence of his wanting, hard and insistent through his dress pants. The contact made her gasp.

"Sara." Her name on his lips was a prayer and a curse. "Tell me to stop."

"I don't want you to stop."

"Tell me this is a mistake."

"It's a mistake." She reached up, her fingers brushing the collar of his shirt. "Don't stop."

The kiss was inevitable. It crashed over them like a wave, his mouth claiming hers with a hunger that stole her breath. His hand came up to cup her jaw, tilting her head back as he deepened the kiss, his tongue sliding against hers in a rhythm that made her knees weak.

She moaned into his mouth, her fingers fisting in his shirt. He walked her backward until her shoulders hit the cool glass of the mirror. The contact sent a shock through her, the contrast of cold against her heated skin making her gasp.

Josh broke the kiss, his breath ragged against her throat. "I've wanted this since the moment I saw you."

"Show me," she said, the words coming out breathless and bold. "Show me how much."

His hands found the hem of her tank top, sliding underneath to press against the bare skin of her waist. His palms were hot, callused from years of nothing more demanding than holding a pen, but they felt like they were made for this. For touching her.

He pushed the fabric up, exposing her stomach, her ribs. She lifted her arms, letting him pull the tank top over her head. Her sports bra was simple, black, functional, but the way he looked at her made her feel like she was wearing silk.

"God, you're beautiful." His voice was reverent.

He bent his head, pressing his mouth to the curve of her breast through the thin fabric. She arched into him, her head falling back against the mirror. The glass was cool against her scalp, grounding her in the reality of what was happening.

His teeth grazed her nipple through the fabric, and she cried out, a sharp sound that she quickly stifled. Nicole was asleep upstairs. They had to be quiet.

Josh seemed to understand. He muffled his next kiss with his hand, covering her mouth as his lips worked lower, trailing down her stomach. He dropped to his knees before her, his hands sliding down her thighs to push up the hem of her skirt.

"I've been thinking about this," he said, his voice muffled against her inner thigh. "About tasting you."

She trembled, her hands finding his shoulders. "Then do it."

He hooked his fingers in the waistband of her underwear, pulling them down her legs. She stepped out of them, feeling exposed and powerful in equal measure. The mirror behind her showed everything, showed her standing half-naked before a fully dressed man on his knees.

Josh looked up at her, his eyes dark and hungry. Then he bent his head and pressed his mouth to her.

The first touch of his tongue was electric. She gasped, her fingers tangling in his hair, holding him there. He worked her with a skill that surprised her, his tongue finding every sensitive spot, his hands gripping her thighs to keep her steady.

"Josh," she whispered, her voice breaking.

He hummed against her, the vibration sending her spiraling. She was close already, too close, the weeks of tension and wanting finally finding release. She tried to warn him, tried to pull away, but he held her tighter, his mouth relentless.

She came with a strangled cry, her body convulsing against his mouth. He stayed with her through every wave, licking her through it until she was trembling and oversensitive.

Only then did he stand. His lips were wet, his eyes wild. He looked at her in the mirror, saw her flushed and panting, her body marked by his mouth.

"Now you," she said, reaching for his belt.

He caught her wrist. "Not yet. I want to feel you."

He turned her around, pressing her chest against the mirror. The glass was cold against her nipples, a sharp contrast to the heat radiating from his body as he pressed against her back. She felt his hands on her hips, felt him grinding against her through the layers of fabric that still separated them.

"Please," she begged.

He unzipped his pants. The sound was loud in the quiet room, impossibly loud. She heard the rustle of fabric, felt the hot length of him pressing against her through the thin fabric of her skirt.

"Is this what you want?" His voice was rough in her ear.

"Yes."

He pushed her skirt up, baring her completely. She was wet, ready, her body aching for him. He pressed against her entrance, just teasing, just enough to make her moan.

"Tell me again."

"I want you, Josh. I want you inside me."

He entered her in one slow, deliberate thrust. She cried out, her palms flat against the mirror, her breath fogging the glass. He was thick, filling her in a way that made her feel claimed, owned.

He started to move, his hips finding a rhythm that matched the frantic beat of her heart. She watched them in the mirror, watched his body driving into hers, watched the way his hands gripped her hips, the way his face was twisted with pleasure.

"You feel incredible," he groaned, his forehead dropping to her shoulder. "I can't think straight when I'm inside you."

She pushed back against him, meeting his thrusts. The mirror was cold, but he was hot, and the contrast was driving her insane. She could see everything, see the way his body moved, see the way her breasts bounced with each thrust, see the raw hunger in his eyes when he looked up and met her gaze in the reflection.

"Look at us," she said again, her voice barely a whisper.

He looked. They both did. A married man and his daughter's best friend, fucking against a mirror in the living room of his family home. It was wrong. It was so wrong. And it was the hottest thing she had ever done.

Josh reached around her, his fingers finding her clit. He circled her as he thrust, his touch perfect, his rhythm unbroken. She felt the pressure building again, felt the familiar coil tightening in her belly.

"I'm close," she gasped.

"Wait for me."

She tried, she really did. But he was too good, too skilled, his fingers working her while his cock drove into her again and again. The orgasm crashed over her, pulling a moan from deep in her chest.

He followed moments later, his body shuddering against hers, his groan muffled in her hair. She felt him pulse inside her, felt the heat of his release, and the intimacy of it made her heart ache.

They stayed like that for a long moment, breathing together, their bodies still joined. Then he pulled out slowly, carefully, and she turned to face him.

His eyes were soft, his lips swollen from kissing her. He looked younger somehow, unguarded in a way she had never seen him.

"That was," he started.

"Intense," she finished.

"Yes." He reached for her, pulling her into his arms. She rested her head against his chest, listening to his heartbeat slow. "Are you okay?"

She nodded against his shirt. "Better than okay."

They stood there, holding each other in front of the mirror that had witnessed everything. The music had stopped at some point, leaving only the sound of their breathing and the distant hum of the house settling around them.

"We need to talk about what this means," he said quietly.

"Not tonight." She looked up at him. "Tonight, I just want to feel this."

He kissed her forehead, a gesture so tender it made her chest tight. "Okay. But we'll talk."

"I know."

She gathered her clothes, dressing quickly while he watched. The silence between them was comfortable, filled with the afterglow of what they had done. But underneath it, she felt the first stirrings of guilt, a whisper that would grow louder with time.

For now, she pushed it away. She had crossed a line, and there was no going back.

Not that she wanted to.

Josh walked her to the door, his hand on the small of her back. Before she left, he pulled her close one last time, his mouth brushing her ear.

"Same time tomorrow?"

She smiled, her heart racing. "Same time tomorrow."

The night air hit her as she stepped outside, cool and clean. She walked to her car with a lightness in her step, her body still humming from his touch. She knew she should feel guilty. She knew this was wrong.

But she couldn't bring herself to care.

Not yet. Not when she still felt his hands on her, his mouth on hers. Not when she still felt him inside her.

She drove home with the windows down, the wind whipping through her hair, and a smile on her face that she couldn't hide.

Tomorrow, she would think about the consequences.

Tonight, she was his.

Hidden Steps

The studio occupied the third floor of an old building downtown, the kind of place with worn hardwood floors and floor to ceiling mirrors that reflected the gray afternoon light. Sara stood in the center of the room, her dance bag at her feet, watching Josh lock the door behind them.

She had never seen him look nervous before. But now, standing in the empty space he had rented for them, he looked almost uncertain. Almost.

"I wanted somewhere we could be alone," he said. "Without the house. Without her."

Sara turned in a slow circle, taking in the ballet barre along one wall, the stereo system in the corner. The mirrors made the room feel infinite, as if they had stepped outside of time itself. "This must have cost a fortune."

"It doesn't matter." He walked toward her, his footsteps echoing on the wood floor. "I needed to see you. Properly."

The words landed in her chest like a stone dropping into still water. She had been thinking about him constantly, remembering the feel of his hands on her waist, replaying the kiss they had shared in his home office days ago. She had been lying to Nicole about rehearsal schedules, inventing excuses to be near him.

"I've been thinking about it too," she admitted. "About what happened. About what almost happened."

"Almost." He stopped in front of her, close enough that she could smell his cologne. "That's why I'm here. That's why I rented this room. I don't want almost anymore."

Her breath caught. "Josh."

"Tell me you don't want this." His voice was low, steady. "Tell me you want to stop. And I will. I'll take you back to the house and we'll finish the dance and I'll never touch you again."

She should have said yes. She should have walked away. But looking at him, at the intensity in his dark eyes and the set of his jaw, she knew she was already lost.

"I don't want to stop," she whispered.

He closed the distance between them and kissed her.

It was different from the first time. Slower. More deliberate. His hands cupped her face, tilting her head back, and he kissed her like he had all the time in the world. Like he was memorizing the shape of her mouth.

She melted into him, her fingers finding the buttons of his shirt. He let her undress him, piece by piece, until he stood before her in just his trousers. His chest was broad and covered in salt and pepper hair. He was built like a man who had spent years in gyms and boardrooms, solid and strong.

"My turn," he said.

He undressed her with the same slow reverence. His fingers traced the straps of her leotard, pushing them down her shoulders. He knelt to peel her leggings from her legs, pressing kisses to her thighs as he went. When she was naked, he stood and looked at her for a long moment.

"You're beautiful," he said simply.

She had never felt so seen. So wanted.

He took her hand and led her to the pile of yoga mats and blankets he had arranged in the corner of the room. He had thought of everything. He had planned this.

"Lie down," he said.

She obeyed, her skin prickling against the soft fabric. He knelt beside her, his eyes traveling the length of her body. Then he lowered his head and pressed his mouth to her stomach.

The kiss was soft. Reverent. He moved slowly, kissing his way up her ribs, across the swell of her chest, until his lips found hers again. His hand slid down her side, over the curve of her hip, between her legs.

She gasped against his mouth.

"I want to taste you," he said. "I've been thinking about it since the first time I touched you."

Her heart hammered. She nodded, not trusting her voice.

He moved down her body, his mouth leaving a trail of heat. He settled between her thighs, and when his tongue touched her, she arched off the mat.

He was thorough. Methodical. He learned her body with his mouth, finding what made her gasp, what made her moan, what made her grip his hair and pull. He did not rush. He seemed to have all the time in the world.

She had never been with a man who did this. Not like this. Not with such focus, such devotion. He seemed to draw pleasure from her pleasure, from the way her hips rocked against his mouth, from the sounds she could not control.

"Josh," she breathed. "I'm going to..."

He pressed deeper, and she shattered, her body shuddering through the orgasm as he held her steady.

He kissed his way back up her body, and she tasted herself on his lips. She reached for him, pulling him on top of her, feeling the weight of him press her into the mat.

"I want you inside me," she said.

He looked down at her, his eyes dark. "Are you sure?"

"I've never been more sure of anything."

He reached for his trousers, pulling a condom from the pocket. She watched him put it on, watched the way his hands moved with practiced efficiency. Then he positioned himself at her entrance and pushed inside.

The feeling was overwhelming. He filled her completely, stretching her in a way that made her gasp. He paused, giving her time to adjust, his forehead pressed to hers.

"You feel incredible," he said.

"Move," she whispered. "Please."

He began to move, slow and deep, each thrust sending waves of pleasure through her body. She wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him deeper, and he groaned against her neck.

The rhythm built, steady and sure. He was in control, but she was not passive. She met each thrust, her nails digging into his shoulders, her breath coming in short, sharp gasps.

"Look at me," he said.

She opened her eyes. Their gazes locked, and something shifted between them. This was not just sex. This was a claiming.

He drove into her harder, faster, and she felt the pressure building again. She was close, so close, and he seemed to know. He reached between them, his thumb finding her clit, and she came with a cry that echoed off the mirrors.

He followed moments later, his body tensing above her, his groan low and rough.

They lay tangled together, breathing hard. The afternoon light had shifted, growing longer and more golden. She did not know how much time had passed.

He rolled off her, pulling her against his side. His hand traced lazy patterns on her skin.

"That was..." she started.

"Different," he finished. "I know."

She turned her head to look at him. "What does this mean?"

He was quiet for a long moment. "I don't know. I only know that I can't stop. That I don't want to."

"What about Nicole? About Evie?"

"I think about them constantly." His voice was rough. "I think about what we're doing. And then I think about you, and I don't care."

She should have been horrified. Instead, she felt a surge of something dark and hungry. She wanted to be the reason he didn't care.

"I don't want to stop either," she said.

He turned to face her, his hand cupping her cheek. "Then we don't. But we have to be careful. If anyone finds out..."

"They won't." She said it with more confidence than she felt. "We'll be smart. We'll use this studio. We'll keep practicing at the house for appearances."

He nodded slowly. "We need rules."

"Rules?"

"No contact unless it's planned. No texts that could be seen. No looks when other people are around."

She felt a chill run down her spine. The reality of what they were doing settled over her like a weight. This was not a one time thing. This was a secret. A lie. A betrayal of everyone who trusted them.

But when she looked at him, she did not care.

"I agree," she said.

He kissed her forehead. "Then we have a deal."

They lay together for a while longer, until the light began to fade and the reality of the outside world crept back in. She dressed slowly, watching him do the same. When they were both ready, he unlocked the door.

"Same time tomorrow?" he asked.

She nodded. "Same time."

She left first, walking down the three flights of stairs alone. The street was busy with evening traffic, people going home from work, living their normal lives. She felt like a stranger in her own skin, like she was seeing the world from behind a glass wall.

She got in her car and sat for a long moment, her hands on the steering wheel. She could still feel him inside her. She could still taste him on her lips.

Her phone buzzed. A text from Nicole.

How's the choreography coming? Mom and Dad are so excited.

She stared at the message, guilt and desire warring in her chest. She typed back a quick reply.

It's coming together. Your dad's a fast learner.

She hit send and started the car, pulling into traffic. The studio was behind her now, but she knew she would be back tomorrow. And the day after. And as many days as Josh could arrange.

She was in too deep to stop.

She did not want to stop.

Double Booked

The house felt different today. Sara stood on the front porch of the Torrence residence, her dance bag slung over one shoulder, and she couldn't shake the feeling that something had shifted. It had been three days since the studio floor. Three days since she'd let Josh take her completely. She'd spent every one of those days replaying each moment in her head, touching herself in the shower while thinking about his hands, his mouth, the way his voice dropped when he told her she belonged to him.

She raised her hand to knock, then stopped. He'd told her to come in quietly. Nicole was at work and Evie had some charity luncheon. They'd have the whole afternoon.

The door opened before she could knock.

Josh stood there in a charcoal dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, no jacket, his forearms bare. He looked at her with that dark, focused intensity that made her thighs clench.

"You're early," he said, his voice low.

"I couldn't wait."

He pulled her inside and closed the door. His hands found her waist immediately, and she let him back her against the wall in the foyer. The kiss was deep and hungry, weeks of tension finally unleashed after the studio, after the decision to keep going.

"I've thought about nothing else," he murmured against her mouth.

"Me neither."

He pressed against her, and she could feel how hard he already was. Her body responded automatically, heat flooding through her. His hands moved down to grip her thighs, and she wrapped her legs around his waist as he lifted her.

"I want you right here," he said, his voice rough. "I don't care if it's the middle of the day."

"In the foyer?" she breathed, but she was already arching into him, her back against the wall.

"Anywhere. Everywhere."

He carried her toward the living room, and she laughed softly against his neck. This was insane. This was the most reckless thing she'd ever done. And she wanted more.

He set her down on the couch and started unbuttoning his shirt. She watched, biting her lip. The gray at his temples, the way his chest looked in the afternoon light coming through the windows. He was beautiful. She was completely lost.

Her phone buzzed in her bag. She ignored it.

His shirt hit the floor. He knelt in front of her, his hands on her knees, pushing them apart.

"Josh, we should be careful."

"We are careful."

He kissed the inside of her thigh through her leggings.

"I mean, what if someone comes home early?"

He looked up at her, his eyes dark. "No one is coming home early. I checked. I always check."

She believed him. She had to. Because she needed this too much to think about consequences.

He pulled her leggings down and pressed his mouth to her core through the thin fabric of her underwear. She gasped, her head falling back against the cushions. His tongue traced her shape through the cotton, and she was already soaking through it.

"Please," she whispered.

"Please what?"

"Please take them off."

He did. Slowly, deliberately, pulling her underwear down her legs. Then he looked at her, spread open and waiting, and his expression was pure reverence.

"You're so beautiful," he said, and then his mouth was on her.

She cried out, then covered her mouth with her hand. The windows were open. The neighbors could hear. But his tongue was inside her, and she couldn't think about anything except the way he licked and sucked and drove her crazy.

He started slow, his tongue tracing the length of her before circling her clit with maddening patience. She squirmed beneath him, her fingers tangling in his hair, pulling him closer. He responded by pressing his mouth more firmly against her, his tongue dipping inside her before sliding back up to that swollen bud.

"Josh," she moaned, barely audible.

He hummed against her, the vibration sending sparks through her core. His hands gripped her thighs, holding her open for him as he worked her with his mouth. She could feel her orgasm building already, a tight coil low in her belly.

He brought her to the edge once, twice, then backed off.

"Not yet," he said, standing up.

He was still in his pants, the bulge obvious. She reached for his belt, but he caught her wrist.

"First, I want to dance with you."

"Dance?"

"Properly. Like we're supposed to."

She laughed, breathless. "You want to tango right now?"

"I want to hold you. I want to move with you. I want to remember this afternoon, not just rush through it."

The tenderness in his voice made her chest ache. She nodded, letting him pull her to her feet. She fixed her leggings, though she left her underwear off. He didn't put his shirt back on.

He put on music. Something slow and romantic. Then he took her hand and placed his other hand on her lower back, pulling her close.

They danced.

Barefoot on the hardwood floor of his living room, his chest against her cheek, his hand warm on her spine. They swayed together, and she felt the tension of the past weeks slowly ease out of her shoulders. This was different. This was real.

"I don't do this," she said softly.

"Don't do what?"

"Get involved with clients. With married men. With anyone, really. I've always been so careful."

His hand pressed her closer. "I know."

"You make me forget to be careful."

"I don't want to hurt you, Sara."

She looked up at him. "Then don't."

He kissed her forehead. "I won't. I promise."

They danced for a few more minutes, and she let herself pretend. Pretend this was real. That he was hers. That there was no wife, no best friend, no betrayal lurking in the shadows.

Then she heard it. A car door.

She froze.

"What is it?" he asked, but she could see he'd heard it too.

The garage door rumbled open.

"Josh, who's home?"

His face went pale. "No one. It's supposed to be empty."

But it wasn't. The door from the garage into the kitchen opened. A woman's voice called out.

"Josh? Are you here?"

Evie.

Sara scrambled away from him, grabbing her bag, looking frantically for a place to hide. But there was no time. The footsteps were coming closer.

"Stay calm," Josh whispered, pulling his shirt back on. "Follow my lead."

He grabbed her hand and led her toward the kitchen, just as Evie rounded the corner. She stopped short, seeing them. Her eyes moved from Josh's hastily buttoned shirt to Sara's flushed face.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize you had a student today."

"Just Sara," Josh said, his voice remarkably steady. "We were going over the choreography. The song choice."

Evie smiled, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. "How nice. Sara, dear, I've heard so much about you from Nicole. She's thrilled about the dance."

"I'm thrilled to be doing it," Sara said, her voice coming out surprisingly normal despite her racing heart.

"Well, don't let me interrupt." Evie set her purse down on the kitchen counter. "I just need to grab some papers for the luncheon, and then I'll be out of your way."

She walked past them toward the study. Sara's heart was pounding so hard she was sure Evie could hear it. She looked at Josh, and he gave her a small, reassuring nod.

"Let's continue in the living room," he said, his hand on her back.

They walked back into the living room, and Sara felt like she was in a dream. A nightmare. No, not a nightmare. A thrill ran through her that she couldn't deny.

Evie was here. And they were going to rehearse like nothing had happened.

The music started again. Josh took her hand, placed his other hand on her waist. She could feel his heart beating fast, just like hers.

"Just dance," he whispered. "Pretend we're professional."

She laughed, but it sounded hollow. "I am professional."

"I know."

They moved together, but it was different now. Every touch was charged with the risk of being seen. Every step felt dangerous. She could feel his body responding to hers, and she knew he could feel hers too.

Evie walked through the living room on her way to the stairs. She paused, watching them.

"That's lovely," she said. "What's the song?"

"It's a surprise," Josh said, his hand tightening on Sara's waist.

Evie smiled again, that same controlled smile. "I'm sure it'll be wonderful."

She climbed the stairs. Sara exhaled.

"That was too close," she whispered.

"It was exciting."

She looked up at him, saw the hunger in his eyes. He was hard against her hip. She was wet for him. The danger had only made them want each other more.

"We can't," she said.

"Can't we?"

He pulled her closer, and she could feel his breath on her neck. Evie was upstairs. She could come down at any moment. And all Sara could think about was his hands on her skin.

"Josh, your wife is in the house."

"I know."

He kissed her neck. She bit her lip to stop from moaning.

"She'll hear us."

"Then we'll be quiet."

His hand slid down her back, over her ass, pressing her against him. She could feel how much he wanted her. How much she wanted him.

"Five minutes," he whispered. "I need five minutes with you."

She knew it was insane. She knew she should say no. But the risk was intoxicating, and she was already lost.

"Where?"

He took her hand and led her to the half-bathroom under the stairs. It was small, barely enough room for both of them. He locked the door.

"This is insane," she breathed.

"I know."

He pushed her against the sink counter, his mouth on hers, hot and demanding. She opened for him, letting him taste her, letting him take what he wanted. His hands found her leggings, pulling them down just enough.

"Bend over," he said, his voice a low command.

She obeyed, turning and gripping the edge of the sink, her heart racing. She heard him unbuckle his belt, heard the zipper. Then his hand was on her hip, guiding her, and the broad head of his cock pressed against her entrance before he pushed inside.

She gasped, pressing her hand to her mouth. He filled her completely, stretching her, and she could feel every inch of him as he moved slowly, deliberately, trying not to make noise. Her body clenched around him, already sensitive from his mouth on her earlier, and she had to bite down on her knuckle to keep from crying out.

He gripped her hips with both hands and pulled her back onto him, deeper than before. The wet sounds of their bodies meeting were unavoidable in the small space, obscene and intoxicating. She could hear his breathing, ragged and controlled, feel the tension in his body as he fought to stay quiet.

"Shh," he whispered against her ear. "You have to be quiet."

She nodded, her eyes squeezed shut. He thrust into her, slow and deep, pulling almost all the way out before sliding back in. Each stroke sent a jolt through her, and she braced herself against the counter, her fingers white-knuckled on the porcelain. The danger made everything more intense. Every nerve was on fire.

He reached around and found her clit, pressing hard circles with his fingers. She was going to come. She couldn't stop it. The pressure built inside her, relentless, her walls tightening around him as he continued to move.

"Not yet," he breathed.

But she was too close. She felt the wave building, crashing over her, and she came with a muffled cry against her hand, her body shaking, her core clenching around him in pulsing waves. He groaned softly, his hips stuttering as her orgasm milked him.

"Fuck," he whispered, and then he was coming too, thrusting into her one last time, his hand gripping her hip so hard it would bruise. She felt him spill inside her, hot and thick, and the sensation triggered another smaller wave that made her legs tremble.

They stayed like that for a moment, panting, trembling. Then he pulled out and she heard him cleaning up. She straightened her clothes, her legs shaking, the evidence of what they'd done sliding down her inner thigh.

They looked at each other in the small mirror. Both flushed. Both guilty.

"Thank you," he said quietly.

She didn't know what to say. She just nodded.

They unlocked the door and stepped out into the hallway. Evie was coming down the stairs.

"Oh, there you are," she said. "I was wondering where you two went."

"Just checking the tempo on my phone," Sara said, holding up her phone as evidence. Smooth. She was getting good at lying.

"Well, I'll be off now," Evie said, picking up her purse. "Josh, I'll see you at dinner. Sara, it was lovely meeting you."

"Likewise," Sara managed.

The door closed behind Evie. The house was silent. Sara and Josh stood in the hallway, looking at each other.

"That can't happen again," she said.

"It will."

"We'll be caught."

"Not if we're careful."

She wanted to argue, but she couldn't. Because she already wanted to do it again. The risk, the thrill, the way it made everything feel more alive.

"One more time," she said. "Before the party. But that's it."

He smiled, and it wasn't a nice smile. It was the smile of a man who knew he'd gotten exactly what he wanted.

"One more time," he agreed.

She didn't believe herself. And she didn't think he believed her either.

She packed her bag and left, her body still humming from his touch, her mind already planning how to get back here again.

The anniversary dance was in three weeks. Three weeks of rehearsals and pretending. Three weeks of trying not to want him more than she already did.

She was going to fail. She knew it.

And she couldn't wait.

Dress Rehearsal Risk

The front door clicked shut behind Nicole, and Sara's stomach dropped. Nicole dropped her bag by the stairs and clapped her hands together, her voice bright with excitement. "I'm so excited to see the full thing. Mom and Dad are going to love it."

Sara forced a smile. "We're ready. We've been working hard."

"I can tell. Dad's been in a better mood lately. More energized." Nicole grinned. "You must be a good teacher."

The words hit like a slap. Sara turned away, adjusting the speaker on the console table. "He's a quick learner."

"I'll bet. He's always been good with his hands."

Sara's breath caught. She knew Nicole meant nothing by it. That was the worst part.

The sound of footsteps on the stairs made her spine straighten. Josh appeared in the doorway, wearing a dark button-down and dress pants. His sleeves were rolled to his elbows, exposing those forearms she knew too well. The ones that had braced above her head in the studio. The ones that had gripped her hips in the dark.

He met her eyes for half a second. Just enough.

"There she is," Nicole said, crossing to kiss his cheek. "The star pupil."

Josh's mouth quirked. "I don't know about that. Sara's a tough instructor."

"Only because you can handle it," Sara said. The double meaning hung in the air between them, invisible to Nicole.

"Okay," Nicole said, settling onto the couch. "Show me what you've got. I want the full production. Music, choreography, all of it."

Sara's heart hammered as she pulled out her phone and connected it to the speaker. The first notes of the song filled the room. A slow, sultry number they'd chosen together. One that let them move close.

She stepped into Josh's space, and his hand found her waist like it belonged there. His other hand took hers, fingers threading together. The contact sent electricity through her skin.

"From the top," she said, her voice steadier than she felt.

They moved together. The steps were second nature now, muscle memory from hours of practice. But with Nicole watching, every touch felt amplified. Every brush of his thigh against hers. Every slide of his palm across her back.

Josh's eyes stayed on her face, but she saw the flicker in them. The awareness of the game they were playing.

"Wow," Nicole breathed from the couch. "You two look amazing together."

Sara's foot slipped. She recovered, but the guilt was a physical weight in her chest.

"Careful," Josh murmured, low enough that only she could hear. His hand tightened on her waist, steadying her.

She looked up at him. His expression was neutral, professional. But his eyes told a different story. They told her he was thinking about the studio. About the floor. About the way she'd said his name when she came.

"Spin," she said, and he turned her. Her skirt flared, and when she came back to him, she was closer than the choreography required.

His breath hitched. She felt it against her temple.

"Sorry," she whispered.

"Don't be."

The song continued. They moved through the routine, and Sara found herself lost in it. The way his body anticipated hers. The way his hands guided her with perfect pressure. The way he looked at her like she was the only person in the room.

Nicole was talking, saying something about the lighting for the party, but Sara barely heard her. All she could feel was Josh. The heat of him. The strength. The forbidden pull that made her stomach clench.

"Perfect," Nicole said as the song ended. "That's going to be incredible. Mom is going to cry."

Sara stepped back from Josh, breaking the contact. Her skin felt cold where his hands had been.

"I need to grab some water," she said, her voice thin. "Be right back."

She walked to the kitchen, her legs unsteady. She leaned against the counter, pressing her palms to the cool granite.

This was wrong. Nicole was her best friend. Nicole trusted her. Nicole was sitting in the next room, praising her for a dance that was really just foreplay.

But God, she wanted him.

The thought made her sick and aroused in equal measure.

Footsteps behind her. She didn't turn.

"You okay?" Josh's voice was close.

"I'm fine."

"You're not."

She turned. He was standing in the kitchen doorway, his body blocking the view of the living room.

"Nicole's checking her phone," he said. "We have a minute."

"A minute for what?"

His eyes darkened. "You know what."

She did. She wanted it. The risk. The danger. The way he looked at her like he'd take her right there on the kitchen floor.

"Nicole's right there," she whispered.

"And I've been watching you all night." He stepped closer. "The way you move. The way you look at me. You're killing me, Sara."

His hand came up to cup her face, his thumb tracing her jaw. She leaned into the touch despite herself.

"We can't," she said, but her voice had no conviction.

"We can." His mouth brushed her ear. "The bathroom at the end of the hall. I'll go first. Count to thirty."

He pulled back, his eyes holding hers. Then he turned and walked out of the kitchen.

Sara stood there, her heart pounding. She should say no. She should walk back to the living room and sit beside Nicole and pretend nothing was happening.

But her feet were already moving.

She counted to thirty in her head, each number a second of indecision. At twenty, she started walking. At thirty, she was at the bathroom door.

She pushed it open.

Josh was waiting. He pulled her inside and locked the door behind her.

The bathroom was small. A toilet, a sink, a mirror. No room to move. No space to breathe.

His hands were on her immediately, pushing her against the door. His mouth found hers, hot and demanding.

"Nicole's right there," she gasped against his lips.

"I know." He kissed her harder, his hands sliding down to grip her hips. "That's what makes it so good."

She should have been offended. She should have pushed him away.

Instead, she moaned.

His hands found the hem of her skirt, pushing it up. His fingers traced the edge of her underwear, and she bucked against his touch.

"Quiet," he murmured. "Can you be quiet for me?"

She nodded, her breath coming in short gasps.

He slid her underwear down, and she stepped out of them. Then he turned her around, pressing her chest against the door. His body covered hers, his mouth at her ear.

"Hands on the door," he whispered. "Don't make a sound."

She placed her palms flat against the wood. She could hear Nicole's voice from the living room, talking on the phone. So close. So dangerously close.

Josh's hand found her, fingers sliding through her wetness. She bit her lip to keep from crying out.

"You're so ready for me," he breathed. "You've been thinking about this all night, haven't you?"

She nodded, her forehead pressed against the door.

He positioned himself, and she felt the tip of him at her entrance. Then he pushed inside, slow and deep.

She had to clamp her hand over her mouth to stifle the sound.

He moved inside her, his thrusts short and controlled. The angle was perfect, hitting her deep. She could feel every inch of him, stretching her, filling her.

Nicole's voice drifted through the door. "Yeah, I'm at the house. The dance is going to be amazing."

Sara's eyes squeezed shut. Nicole was ten feet away. Ten feet and a thin door.

Josh's hand came around to cover hers on the door. His fingers laced with hers, pinning her hand to the wood. His other hand gripped her hip, guiding her into his rhythm.

"Look at us," he whispered. "Right under her nose."

She opened her eyes. In the mirror across from them, she could see the reflection. Her skirt bunched around her waist. Josh's body pressed against hers. The way he moved inside her, slow and deliberate.

It was obscene. It was thrilling.

"I'm close," she breathed.

"Not yet." His hand slid from her hip to her front, fingers finding her clit. He circled it once, twice, and she had to bite down on her knuckle to keep from screaming.

"Now," he said, and his thrusts quickened.

The orgasm hit her like a wave, pulling her under. She shook against him, her body clenching around his. He followed a moment later, his grip on her tightening as he spilled inside her.

They stayed like that for a moment, breathing hard. Then he pulled out, and she felt the loss immediately.

He handed her a tissue. She cleaned up, her hands shaking.

When she turned around, he was watching her. His eyes were soft, almost tender.

"That was insane," she whispered.

"I know." He kissed her forehead. "Go first. I'll wait a minute."

She unlocked the door and slipped out. The hallway was empty. She walked back to the living room, her legs unsteady.

Nicole looked up from her phone. "Everything okay?"

"Yeah." Sara smiled, and it felt almost real. "Just needed a minute."

"Ready for another run-through?"

Sara's eyes met Josh's as he walked back into the room. "Absolutely."

She was ready for a lot more than that. And that was the scariest part.

Private Lesson

The studio felt different today. Sara stood at the doorway, taking in the space that Josh had transformed. Candles flickered on the windowsill, casting warm light across the walls. A thick blanket lay spread across the center of the floor with pillows arranged at one end. A bottle of wine and two glasses sat on a small table against the wall.

She had never seen the room like this. Soft. Intimate. Every detail chosen with intention.

Josh stood near the mirrors, his jacket off, his sleeves rolled to his elbows. He looked at her with an expression she hadn't seen before. Open, almost vulnerable. He looked nervous.

"You did all this?" she asked, stepping inside.

"I wanted today to be different." His voice was low, careful. "No interruptions. No time limit. Just us."

Sara let her bag slide from her shoulder to the floor. She moved toward him slowly, feeling the shift in her own chest. The usual urgency wasn't there. What replaced it was something quieter. Something that scared her more than the risk of getting caught.

"I've been thinking about what this is," she said, stopping a few feet from him. "About what we're doing."

"So have I."

She looked at his hands, those strong hands that had gripped her waist and pulled her against him. "I told myself it was just physical. That I could control it. But that's not true anymore."

"No," he agreed. "It's not."

She met his eyes. "I don't know what I'm doing, Josh. I've never been in a situation like this. I've never lied to my best friend before. I've never been with a married man. I don't know how to navigate this."

He stepped closer, close enough that she could feel the warmth radiating from his body. "Neither do I. But I know I don't want to stop."

"That's what scares me."

"Why?"

She let out a shaky breath. "Because if I'm honest with myself, I'm not just here for the thrill anymore. I'm here for you. And that makes everything harder."

Josh reached out and cupped her face in his hand. The gesture was tender, almost reverent. "Sara."

"I know it's wrong," she whispered. "I know I'm betraying Nicole. I know you're married. But when I'm with you, none of that matters. And that's what terrifies me. Because it should matter."

"It does matter," he said. "I think about it every day. I think about what I'm risking. What you're risking. But I can't seem to care enough to stop."

She pressed her cheek into his palm. "Tell me something real. Something you haven't told anyone else."

He was quiet for a long moment. Then he spoke.

"I've been married for twenty five years. And for at least fifteen of those, I've felt completely invisible." His voice was low, steady. "Evie and I coexist. We manage the household, we attend events together, we sleep in the same bed. But she doesn't see me. Not the way you do. Not the way you have since the first moment we touched."

Sara felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes. "I feel like I'm seeing you for the first time right now."

"I feel like I'm being seen for the first time," he replied.

She kissed him. Not the hungry, desperate kisses of their previous encounters. This was slow. Soft. Her lips brushed against his with a tenderness that made her chest ache. He responded in kind, his hand sliding into her hair, tilting her head gently.

When they broke apart, they were both breathing shallowly.

"I want to take my time with you today," he said. "I want to know every part of you. Not just your body. Everything."

Sara nodded, not trusting her voice.

He led her to the blanket and they sat facing each other. He reached for her hands, lacing their fingers together.

"Tell me something real," he said, echoing her words.

She looked at their joined hands. "I've been pretending I'm okay with this being temporary. That after the party, I could walk away and go back to my life. But I don't think I can."

"I don't want you to."

She looked up sharply. "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying I don't know what happens after this. But I know I don't want it to end. I've spent years being numb, Sara. You woke me up. And I'm not ready to go back to sleep."

She leaned forward and kissed him again, deeper this time. He pulled her closer, his hands sliding down her back. They lowered themselves onto the blanket, lying facing each other.

He reached for the hem of her shirt and she lifted her arms, letting him pull it over her head. His eyes traveled over her body, slow and appreciative. He traced his fingers along her collarbone, down the center of her chest, over the lace of her bra.

"You're beautiful," he said. "Every time I see you, I'm struck by it."

She reached for his shirt buttons, undoing them one by one. She pushed the fabric aside, running her hands over his chest, feeling the warmth of his skin, the steady beat of his heart beneath her palm.

"I want to feel you," she whispered. "All of you."

He sat up and pulled his shirt off completely. She sat up too, reaching behind her back to unclasp her bra. It fell away and his breath caught.

"Come here," he said, his voice rough.

She moved into his lap, straddling him. Their chests pressed together, skin against skin. He wrapped his arms around her, holding her close, burying his face in the curve of her neck.

"I could stay here forever," he murmured against her skin.

She ran her fingers through his hair, tilting her head back. "Then stay."

They held each other for a long moment, breathing together, hearts beating against each other. Then he leaned back, looking at her face.

"I want to make love to you," he said. "Slowly. I want to remember every second of this."

She shivered at his words. "Yes."

He laid her back on the blanket, propping himself on his elbow beside her. He kissed her forehead, her eyelids, the tip of her nose. He kissed her lips softly before trailing down her jaw, her throat, the hollow at the base of her neck.

He took his time. Each kiss was deliberate. Each touch was a question and a promise. He kissed her breasts, taking his time with each one, his mouth warm and reverent. He circled her nipple with his tongue, then drew it into his mouth, sucking gently. She arched into him, her fingers tangled in his hair, a soft moan escaping her lips.

He moved lower, pressing kisses down her stomach, her hips. He unfastened her jeans and she lifted her hips so he could slide them off. He removed her panties slowly, his eyes never leaving her body.

When she was completely bare before him, he sat back and looked at her. The candlelight flickered across her skin, casting shadows and gold.

"You're the most beautiful thing I've ever seen," he said.

She reached for him. "Come here. I want to feel you against me."

He shed the rest of his clothes quickly and stretched out beside her. Their bodies aligned, skin sliding against skin. She could feel the hard length of him pressing against her thigh, warm and insistent. He kissed her deeply, his hand sliding down her side, over her hip, between her thighs.

She gasped into his mouth as his fingers found her, already slick and ready. He parted her folds with deliberate slowness, tracing the length of her before circling her clit with maddening patience. She moaned against his lips, her hips tilting toward his hand.

"I want to taste you," he said, pulling back.

He moved down her body, settling between her thighs. He looked up at her, his eyes dark in the dim light.

"Tell me what you want."

"I want you to make me fall apart," she breathed. "And then I want to do the same to you."

He smiled, a slow, genuine smile that made her heart stutter. Then he lowered his head.

His mouth was warm and skilled. He took his time, exploring her with his tongue and lips. He started with long, slow strokes, tasting every inch of her, learning what made her breath hitch and what made her gasp. She tangled her fingers in his hair, her hips rolling against his face. He held her steady, his hands gripping her thighs, spreading her open for his mouth.

He found a rhythm, his tongue circling her clit with increasing pressure before dipping lower, pushing inside her. She whimpered, her back arching off the blanket. He responded by sucking gently, drawing her swollen flesh into his mouth while his tongue worked in relentless circles.

The pleasure built slowly, deliberately. He seemed to know exactly when to speed up and when to slow down. He brought her to the edge and held her there, letting her tremble on the brink. She could feel the tension coiling tight inside her, her thighs shaking against his shoulders.

"Josh," she gasped. "Please."

He increased the pressure, his tongue moving faster, and she shattered. She cried out, her back arching, her fingers gripping the blanket. The orgasm washed through her in waves, deep and consuming. Her inner walls clenched around nothing, pulsing with the aftershocks. He didn't stop until she was completely spent, her body limp and trembling beneath him.

He crawled back up her body, kissing his way along her stomach, her chest, her throat. She tasted herself on his lips when he kissed her.

"That was incredible," she whispered.

"I'm not done with you yet."

She rolled them over, straddling him. She looked down at him, at his flushed skin and heavy lidded eyes. She reached between them and wrapped her hand around him, feeling his length, his heat. He was hard and thick in her palm, and she stroked him slowly, feeling him pulse against her fingers.

"Now it's my turn," she said.

She positioned him at her entrance and lowered herself onto him slowly, inch by inch. They both groaned at the sensation as her body stretched to accommodate him. When he was fully inside her, she paused, letting them adjust to the feeling of being connected so completely. She could feel him deep inside, filling her, the warmth of him radiating through her core.

She began to move, a slow, rocking rhythm. He watched her, his hands on her hips, his eyes never leaving her face. She leaned forward, her hair falling around them like a curtain.

"Look at me," she said. "I want to see your face."

He kept his eyes on hers as she rode him. The pace was slow, intimate. Each movement was a shared breath, a shared heartbeat. She could feel every inch of him as she moved, the friction building a slow heat between them.

"I don't want this to end," she said, her voice breaking.

He sat up, pulling her into his arms. The new angle pushed him deeper and she gasped, her nails digging into his shoulders. He held her close, his face buried in her neck.

"Then let's make it last," he whispered.

He laid her back down, never leaving her. He moved over her, his weight supported on his forearms. He looked down at her, his expression open and raw.

"I'm falling in love with you," he said.

The words hit her like a wave. She wrapped her legs around him, pulling him deeper. "I'm falling in love with you too."

He kissed her as he began to move, slow and deep. Each thrust was a declaration. Each moan was a confession. They moved together in perfect rhythm, their bodies speaking a language that needed no words. She could feel him withdrawing almost completely before sliding back in, the full length of him filling her over and over.

He reached between them, his fingers finding her clit. He circled her in time with his thrusts, building the pleasure again. She was sensitive from her first orgasm, but the sensation was different now. Fuller. Deeper. The combination of his fingers and his cock inside her was overwhelming.

"Come with me," he breathed against her ear. "Let go together."

She felt the tension building, coiling low in her belly. She looked into his eyes and saw the same desperate need reflected back at her.

"Yes," she gasped. "Yes, please."

He thrust deeper, his fingers working faster. She felt herself cresting, the wave rising. She clung to him, her nails digging into his back.

"Now," she cried. "Now, Josh."

He drove into her one last time and she shattered, her orgasm ripping through her. Her walls clenched around him, pulsing and demanding. He followed a moment later, his body shuddering against hers, his groan swallowed by her mouth. She felt him spill inside her, hot and thick, the sensation extending her own pleasure until she couldn't tell where hers ended and his began.

They held each other as the waves receded, their bodies still joined, their hearts still racing. He lowered himself onto her, his weight a comfort, his face pressed into her neck.

Neither of them spoke for a long time.

Eventually, he shifted, rolling onto his side and pulling her with him. They lay facing each other, their legs tangled, their hands intertwined.

"That was different," she said softly.

"Different how?"

"It felt like more than just sex. It felt like we were saying something to each other."

He nodded slowly. "We were."

She traced the lines of his face with her fingers. "What happens now?"

"I don't know," he admitted. "But I know I don't want to lose this. I don't want to lose you."

"Even with everything?"

"Even with everything."

She closed her eyes and let herself believe him. Just for this moment. Just for this afternoon.

When she opened her eyes, he was watching her with an expression so tender it hurt.

"I have to go soon," she said reluctantly. "Nicole texted me asking about the rehearsal schedule."

He nodded. "I know."

But neither of them moved. They stayed tangled together, the candlelight fading as the afternoon slipped away.

Finally, she sat up. The blanket fell away, and the cool air touched her skin. She gathered her clothes, dressing slowly, feeling his eyes on her the entire time.

When she was dressed, she turned back to him. He was still on the blanket, watching her.

"Thank you," she said. "For today. For being honest with me."

"Thank you for trusting me."

She walked to the door and paused. She looked back at him, at this man who had turned her life upside down.

"I'll see you tomorrow," she said.

"I'll be counting the hours."

She left the studio, stepping back into the real world. The sun was lower in the sky. The air was cooler. She walked to her car, her body still humming with the memory of his touch.

She knew she should feel guilty. She knew she should feel ashamed. But all she felt was alive.

And that was the most dangerous feeling of all.

The Night Before

Sara's hands trembled as she turned the key in the lock. The house was dark except for a single lamp in the foyer, casting long shadows across the marble floor. She could smell the flowers from the arrangements Nicole had spent all afternoon perfecting. Roses and peonies mingled with something white and fragrant that she couldn't name. Tomorrow, those same arrangements would fill the backyard for the anniversary party. Tomorrow, she would dance with Josh in front of everyone. Tonight, she needed to feel his hands on her one more time before the charade began.

She texted him from the foyer: I'm here.

His reply came seconds later: Study. Back corner. Come quiet.

She knew the layout of this house better than her own apartment now. Every creaking floorboard, each shadow that concealed movement, all of it mapped in her memory. She slipped off her heels and padded barefoot across the cold tile, her heart hammering against her ribs. The risk was astronomical. Evie was asleep upstairs. Nicole was in her childhood bedroom, probably dreaming of surprise anniversary dances and happy families. Sara pushed open the study door and found him waiting in the dark.

Josh stood by the window, moonlight tracing the hard lines of his jaw. He wore a simple white button-down, sleeves rolled to his elbows, the top three buttons undone. He looked tired. Hungry. The study smelled like old books and his cologne, underscored by something electric that passed between them whenever they were alone.

"You came," he said, his voice low.

"Did you think I wouldn't?"

He crossed the room in three long strides and pulled her into his arms. His mouth found hers before she could speak again, and the kiss was different from all the others. It was desperate. A man trying to memorize the shape of her lips. She felt his need in the grip of his hands on her hips, in the uneven rush of his breath against her cheek.

"Tomorrow," she breathed against his mouth.

"Not yet." His hands slid down her back, gripping her curves. "I'm not ready to share you with a room full of people."

She pulled back just enough to look at him. In the dim light, his eyes were dark and serious. She had never seen him look so uncertain. The lines around his mouth seemed deeper tonight.

"Josh. What is it?"

He shook his head. "I don't know how to do this. Pretend you're just the dance instructor. Watch you across the room and not touch you."

"You've been doing it for weeks."

"Tonight is different." His hands found her waist, pulling her closer. "Tomorrow is the end of one thing and the beginning of something else. I need to know what that means for us."

Sara felt the weight of his words settle in her chest. She had been avoiding this conversation, letting the physical consume everything. But now, with the party hours away, the future pressed against them like a third presence in the room. She could hear the clock ticking on the mantel, counting down the seconds until everything changed.

"I don't want it to end," she said quietly.

"Then it doesn't."

She looked up at him. "You can't just decide that."

"I can." His voice was steel. "I've been thinking about this for weeks. Every time I touch you, every time I watch you leave this house, I think about what it would be like to have you without the fear of being caught."

"Josh, you have a wife. You have a daughter who is my best friend."

"I know what I have." He cupped her face in his hands. "I also know what I want. And I want you. After tomorrow, I want to figure out how to make this work."

"Make what work exactly?"

"Us. Whatever we are. I don't want to share you with a secret. I want to wake up next to you."

Sara's breath caught. This was more than she had expected. More than she had allowed herself to hope for. But the reality of it crashed down on her like cold water.

"What about Nicole?"

"I'll figure it out."

"She'll hate me."

"She won't know the truth right away. We can be careful."

Sara shook her head. "You're talking about leaving your wife. That's not careful. That's a bomb."

Josh pulled her closer, his forehead against hers. "I know. But I can't go back to the way things were before you. I can't pretend in that bed with her tonight."

The confession made Sara's stomach flip. She wanted to believe him. She wanted to be brave enough to say yes to whatever he was offering. But the memory of Nicole's excited voice on the phone yesterday, talking about the party, about how happy her parents were, made her chest ache with guilt.

"After tomorrow," she said slowly. "We talk about this after tomorrow. Right now, I just need you."

He kissed her again, and this time there was no restraint. His hands moved under her shirt, finding skin, finding heat. She arched into him, her own fingers working the buttons of his shirt until it fell open. Her palms pressed flat against his chest, feeling the steady thrum of his heart. She wanted to memorize this feeling, the catch of his breath when she touched him.

"I want to remember this," he murmured against her neck. "Every detail."

She pulled him down to the Persian rug, the same one she had stood on during her first lesson. It felt like years ago. She felt like a different woman now, one who knew the weight of his body, the sound of his breath catching, the way he said her name when he was close. The wool was soft beneath her back, the scent of dust and age rising around them.

He undressed her slowly, reverently, even as his hands shook with barely contained hunger. Her dress pooled around her hips. Her bra followed. He took his time with her breasts, his mouth hot and worshipful, making her gasp and grip the rug beneath her. The cool air hit her skin where his mouth left wet trails. He circled one nipple with his tongue, then drew it into his mouth, sucking gently at first, then harder, flicking the sensitive peak until she whimpered. He gave the same attention to the other, his hand kneading the breast his mouth had abandoned, rolling the nipple between his thumb and forefinger.

"Josh, please."

"Not yet." He kissed down her stomach, her hips, the inside of her thighs. "I want to taste every part of you before tomorrow makes you a performance."

She trembled as his tongue found her center. He was thorough, relentless, building her up with slow circles and firm pressure until she was arching off the floor, her fingers twisted in his hair, trying not to cry out. He spread her open with his fingers, his tongue circling her clit with maddening patience before dipping lower, thrusting inside her. She bit down on her lip, her hips rocking against his mouth. He groaned against her wet flesh, the vibration sending sparks through her core, and then his mouth returned to her clit, sucking gently while two fingers curled inside her, finding that spot that made her vision blur.

"Quiet," he reminded her, his breath hot against her slick skin. "Nicole's upstairs."

The mention of her best friend's name sent a thrill through Sara that was equal parts guilt and arousal. She bit her lip hard enough to taste blood as Josh pushed her over the edge, her body shaking silently beneath him. The orgasm rolled through her in waves, each pulse of pleasure making her grip his hair tighter, her thighs clamping around his head as she rode out the crest. He didn't stop, his tongue working her through every aftershock until she was trembling and oversensitive, pulling him away with desperate hands.

He crawled up her body, his weight settling between her thighs. His erection pressed against her wetness, and she could feel how much he wanted her, how hard he was holding back. The head of him nudged against her opening, teasing, waiting. She reached down and wrapped her hand around him, stroking slowly, feeling the velvety heat of him, the pulse of blood beneath the skin. He groaned against her neck, his hips bucking into her grip.

"Tell me what you want," he said, his voice rough.

"I want you to fuck me like it's the last time."

He paused. "It's not the last time."

"Then fuck me like you mean it."

He entered her in one smooth thrust, and she gasped, her nails digging into his shoulders. He was thick and hot inside her, filling her completely. She felt every inch of him as he pushed deeper, stretching her, claiming her. He stayed there for a moment, buried to the hilt, his forehead pressed against hers, both of them breathing hard. Then he began to move, pulling almost all the way out before sinking back in with a slow, deliberate stroke that made her toes curl.

She wrapped her legs around him, pulling him deeper. The rug scratched against her back, but she didn't care. All she could feel was him, the weight of him, the heat of him, the way he whispered her name like a prayer. His sweat dripped onto her skin. His breath was hot against her neck. He picked up the pace, each thrust driving deeper, harder, the sound of their bodies meeting filling the quiet study. She lifted her hips to meet him, taking him as deep as she could, feeling the impact all the way to her core.

"I love this," she breathed. "I love the way you feel inside me."

He groaned, his rhythm faltering for just a moment before he caught himself. "Sara."

"Don't stop."

He didn't. He drove into her with a raw, primal need that made her feel claimed, owned, wanted in a way she had never experienced before. She met him thrust for thrust, her body moving with his, their sweat mingling in the dark. The wet, rhythmic sound of their fucking was punctuated by his low groans and her stifled gasps. He shifted his weight, changing the angle, and the head of his cock dragged against that spot inside her with every stroke. Stars burst behind her eyelids.

"Right there," she whispered. "God, right there."

He braced himself on one arm, the other hand gripping her hip to hold her steady as he drove into her harder. The new angle let him go deeper, and she felt the pressure building again, a second wave threatening to break. She clenched around him, and he hissed through his teeth, his jaw tight with the effort of holding back.

"Come for me again," he said, his voice strained. "I want to feel you."

She did. The orgasm crashed through her harder than the first, her body clenching around him in pulsing waves, her back arching off the rug. She bit her lip so hard she tasted copper, a strangled cry caught in her throat. The walls of her pussy gripped him tight, milking him, and she felt him lose control.

He followed moments later, a shuddering groan pressed into her neck, his body tensing and releasing. She felt him throb inside her, the hot rush of him filling her, his hips jerking with each pulse. She held him through it, her hands stroking his back, her lips pressing soft kisses to his temple. His weight was comforting, grounding her in the aftermath. He stayed inside her, softening slowly, neither of them willing to break the connection just yet.

They lay there for a long moment, tangled together on the rug. The clock on the mantel ticked steadily. Somewhere upstairs, a floorboard creaked, and they both froze.

Sara's heart pounded. "Was that Nicole?"

Josh listened. "Just the house settling."

They waited in silence until the house was still again. Then Josh pulled her closer, his arm wrapped around her, his hand splayed across her stomach. She could feel his heart still racing against her back.

"After tomorrow," he said quietly. "We meet at the studio. Same time. Same place."

"And then what?"

"Then we talk. Really talk. About what comes next."

Sara turned in his arms to face him. The moonlight caught the silver in his hair, made his eyes look almost black. "What if I can't do this? What if I can't look at Nicole tomorrow and pretend I'm not sleeping with her father?"

"You can." He kissed her forehead. "You've been doing it for weeks. One more night. Then everything changes."

She wanted to believe him. She wanted to believe that after tomorrow, the secrets would unravel and she could have him without the guilt. But she knew better. The guilt would always be there. The question was whether he was worth it.

He was.

She kissed him one last time, soft and lingering. "I should go before someone wakes up."

"Stay a little longer."

"I can't."

"Five minutes."

She smiled despite herself. "You're impossible."

"I'm in love with you."

The words hung in the air between them, unexpected and terrifying. Sara's breath caught. She looked at him, searching his face for any sign that he was joking.

He wasn't.

"Josh..."

"You don't have to say it back." He brushed a strand of hair from her face. "I just wanted you to know. Before tomorrow. I wanted you to know that this isn't just about the sex for me. It hasn't been for a long time."

Sara felt tears prick her eyes. She blinked them back. "I don't know what I feel. Everything is so complicated."

"I know."

"But I know I don't want to lose this. I don't want to lose you."

He pulled her close, and they lay together in the dark, the weight of his confession settling around them. Outside, the first hints of dawn were beginning to lighten the sky through the curtained windows. A bird started singing somewhere in the garden.

Tomorrow, she would dance with him in front of everyone. She would smile at Evie. She would hug Nicole and pretend everything was normal. She would touch Josh's hand in the dance and feel the electricity, and no one would know.

But tonight, she was his. And he was hers.

And after tomorrow, they would figure out what that meant.

She dressed in silence, her body still humming from his touch. Her dress slid over her hips, her hair fell back into place. At the door, she turned back. He was still on the rug, watching her with those dark, intense eyes, his shirt open, his chest bare, looking more vulnerable than she had ever seen him.

"Same time tomorrow?" she asked.

"Same time. Same place."

She nodded and slipped out into the hall, her bare feet silent on the cold floor. The house was still dark, still sleeping. She made it to the front door and stepped out into the cool morning air.

The sun was rising over the Torrence house, painting the sky in shades of pink and gold. Sara took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Her body ached in the best way. Her mind raced with possibilities.

Tomorrow, everything changed.

But tonight, she had him.

And that was enough. For now.

Curtain Call

The Torrence house had transformed overnight. White flowers spilled from crystal vases on every surface. Candles flickered along the mantel. String music drifted through the open patio doors where guests mingled on the terrace. I stood near the bar in a deep burgundy dress that fell just above my knees, my hair pinned up with a few loose strands, and tried to remember how to breathe.

Nicole found me within seconds of my arrival, her eyes bright with champagne and excitement. She wrapped her arms around me in a quick hug that smelled like her floral perfume and the nervous energy she'd been radiating all week.

"You look incredible," she said, pulling back to study me. "That dress is perfect. Mom and Dad are going to lose their minds when they see the dance."

I smiled and squeezed her hand. "They're going to love it. You put so much work into this."

"We put work into it," she corrected, and the warmth in her voice made my stomach twist. "I just planned the party. You made the magic happen."

Guilt sat heavy in my chest, a familiar weight now, but I kept my smile steady. "Where are they?"

"Mom's by the piano. Dad's getting a drink. I'll announce the dance soon. Is that enough time for you to warm up?"

"Plenty."

She squeezed my hand again and disappeared into the crowd. I took a slow breath and let my eyes drift across the room.

Evie stood near the piano in a silver dress that matched the gray in her hair, talking to an older couple. She looked elegant and composed, the perfect hostess. I watched her laugh at something and felt the familiar ache of guilt twist deeper.

Then I saw him.

Josh stood at the bar in a dark suit, his broad back to me as he spoke to the bartender. The cut of the jacket emphasized his shoulders. The silver in his hair caught the candlelight. He turned slightly, and our eyes met across the room.

For a moment, everything else disappeared. The music faded. The laughter blurred. The clinking of glasses became distant static. He held my gaze, then looked away, his expression unchanged.

But I saw the muscle in his jaw tighten. I saw his hand flex around his glass.

And I felt the warmth spread through my chest, sliding down my spine, settling low in my stomach.

Soon we would dance in front of everyone. And no one would know what those hands had done to me.

I moved to the side of the room near the designated dance floor, a polished section of hardwood where the furniture had been cleared. I stretched my legs and arms, keeping my movements casual, but my heart pounded against my ribs. The last time I'd been in this house, Josh had pressed me against the studio mirror with his hand over my mouth while Evie was three rooms away.

I shook the memory loose. Focus. Performance first. Everything else after.

Nicole's voice cut through the chatter. "Excuse me, everyone! Can I have your attention please?"

The room settled. Glasses were lowered. Conversations died down.

"As most of you know, I've been planning something special for Mom and Dad's anniversary." She smiled at them across the room. "I wanted to give them a gift that came from the heart. So I hired the best dance instructor I know to work with Dad on a surprise routine. They've been practicing for weeks."

Scattered applause. Evie's hand went to her mouth. Josh set down his glass and started walking toward the dance floor.

My pulse hammered. This was it.

He reached me at the edge of the floor and extended his hand. The gesture was formal, gallant. But his eyes held mine, and I saw the heat flickering beneath the calm surface.

"Ready, Ms. Parker?" he asked, loud enough for the room to hear.

I placed my hand in his. "Ready, Mr. Torrence."

His fingers closed around mine, warm and familiar. He led me to the center of the floor. The guests formed a loose circle around us. I heard Nicole say something about the music, and then the first notes of our song filled the room.

A slow waltz. Simple. Elegant. But the arrangement had a subtle syncopation, a pulse beneath the surface that mirrored the rhythm of my racing heart.

Josh's hand settled on my waist. His other hand held mine. I placed my free hand on his shoulder and felt the warmth of his body through the layers of fabric.

We began to move.

And the world narrowed to just us.

The steps were ingrained, drilled into muscle memory over weeks of rehearsal. But dancing with him now, in front of his wife and daughter and friends, felt completely different. Every touch was amplified. Every glance felt like a confession.

His hand pressed gently against my lower back, guiding me through a turn. I spun and came back to him, closer than before. My dress whispered against his trousers.

"You look beautiful tonight," he murmured, his lips barely moving.

I kept my smile professional, my eyes on his collarbone. "You shouldn't say that here."

"I know." His hand tightened on my waist. "But I've been thinking about you all day."

The music swelled, and we moved through the steps. Forward, side, close. Back, side, close. The pattern was simple, but the way he held me made it feel like sin.

I risked a glance up at him. His eyes were dark, focused, intense. He looked at me the way he looked at me in the studio. Like nothing else existed.

"When this is over," he said, his voice low enough that only I could hear, "I need to see you."

"Josh." His name was a warning and a promise all at once.

"Just for a minute. Just to breathe the same air without everyone watching."

We turned again, and I caught a glimpse of Evie watching from the side. She was smiling, dabbing at her eyes. Nicole stood beside her, phone out, recording everything.

The guilt was a knife in my ribs. But the desire was stronger.

"Where?" I whispered.

"The studio. After the party dies down. I'll find a way."

I nodded, barely visible. Then we were moving again, and I let myself fall into the dance.

His hand slid to the curve of my hip. My fingers traced the back of his neck. The moves were choreographed, but the touches lingered a beat too long, pressed a fraction too deep. Anyone watching would see a beautiful performance. I felt the truth of it burning through me.

He dipped me low, his hand cradling my back, his face inches from mine. My hair brushed the floor. The room spun. For a moment, it was just us suspended in time.

"I don't want this to end," he said, so quiet I almost missed it.

Then he pulled me up, and we were spinning again, and the song was building toward its close.

The final notes hung in the air as we held our last pose, my hand in his, his arm around my waist, our bodies close but proper. The silence stretched.

Then the room exploded in applause.

I blinked, coming back to myself. Guests were clapping, smiling. Nicole was cheering. Evie was wiping her eyes and laughing.

Josh released me slowly, his fingers trailing across my palm as he let go.

"Beautiful," Evie said, crossing to us. She kissed Josh's cheek, then took my hands. "Sara, that was absolutely beautiful. I can't believe you two pulled this off."

"It was all him," I said, my voice steady despite the storm inside me. "He's a natural."

Evie beamed at her husband. "I'm so proud of you, sweetheart."

Josh smiled at her, warm and genuine. "I had a good teacher."

His eyes flicked to mine for a fraction of a second. Long enough for me to see the truth behind the mask.

Then Nicole swept me away for champagne and photos, and I let myself be pulled into the celebration.

For the next hour, I mingled. I accepted compliments. I posed for pictures with Nicole and her family. I watched Evie rest her hand on Josh's arm and felt the familiar twist of jealousy and shame.

But I also watched him.

The way his eyes found mine across the room. The way he angled his body toward me even when he was talking to someone else. The way his thumb traced the rim of his glass while he watched me laugh with Nicole.

I knew that gesture. I'd seen it before he kissed me. Before he touched me. Before he took me apart in the studio.

My body remembered everything.

As the evening wound on, the crowd began to thin. Older guests said their goodbyes. Nicole was busy seeing off friends. Evie was deep in conversation with her sister near the piano.

I slipped away toward the back hallway, my heels silent on the hardwood. The studio door was unlocked. I stepped inside and closed it behind me.

The room was dark, lit only by moonlight streaming through the windows. The mirror gleamed. The barre stood empty. I could still smell him in here. Sawdust and cedar. The clean scent of his skin.

I leaned against the wall and waited.

Time stretched. I heard footsteps in the hallway. The door opened, and he was there, backlit by the dim hall light.

Then the door closed, and we were alone.

He didn't speak. He crossed the room in long strides and took my face in his hands. His mouth found mine, and the kiss was different from every other one. Slower. Deeper. Like he was memorizing the shape of my lips.

I melted into him, my hands sliding up his chest to grip his lapels. The fabric of his suit was smooth and warm. I pulled him closer, and he made a sound low in his throat that I felt vibrate through my whole body.

"I've been wanting to do that all night," he said against my mouth.

"Me too."

His hands moved down my sides, tracing the curve of my waist, the flare of my hips. He found the hem of my dress and slid his hands underneath, palms warm on my bare thighs.

"We don't have long," he said. "Nicole's distracted. Evie's saying goodbye to her sister. But they'll notice I'm gone."

"Then don't waste time."

He kissed me again, harder, and I felt the control I'd held all night start to slip. My hands tangled in his hair. His fingers pressed into my skin, pulling me flush against him. I could feel the hard lines of his body through his suit, the rigid length of his arousal pressing against my hip.

"God, Sara," he breathed, his mouth moving to my jaw, my neck, the sensitive spot below my ear. "Do you know what it was like, dancing with you in front of everyone? Touching you and not being able to really touch you?"

"Tell me," I whispered, my head falling back against the wall.

"Every time I put my hand on your waist, I wanted to slide it lower. Every time you looked up at me, I wanted to kiss you right there in front of all of them." His teeth grazed my earlobe, and a shiver ran through me. "I've been hard since the first note of that song."

His hands slid higher up my thighs, pushing my dress with them. The cool air hit my skin, but his palms were hot, burning against me. He found the edge of my underwear and traced along it with one finger, back and forth, maddeningly slow.

"Josh," I breathed, and my hips tilted toward him without my permission.

"I love the way you say my name." His finger dipped beneath the fabric, just barely, tracing the crease of my thigh. "Like you're begging and warning me at the same time."

"I am begging."

He groaned against my neck, and his finger slid lower, finding me slick and ready. I gasped when he touched me, my fingers tightening in his hair. He stroked me slowly, deliberately, circling the place that made my knees buckle and then pulling away to trace lower.

"You're so wet," he murmured. "You've been like this all night?"

"Since I saw you at the bar." My voice came out thin, breathless. "Since you looked at me and I knew what was coming later."

He rewarded me with another stroke, firmer this time, and I bit my lip to keep from crying out. The party was still going on down the hall. People were laughing, talking, celebrating. And here in the dark, Josh Torrence had his hand between my legs, and I was unraveling.

"I need to be inside you," he said, his voice rough.

"Then be inside me."

He pulled his hand away, and I heard the soft sound of his zipper. Then his hands were on my hips, turning me, pressing me against the wall face-first. The cool plaster met my flushed skin, and I braced myself with both hands.

He pushed my dress up over my hips. His hands gripped my waist, and I felt him step close, the heat of him pressing against my back. He hooked his fingers into my underwear and pulled them down, just enough, just far enough.

"Look at you," he said, his voice thick. He traced his hand over the curve of my hip, down the back of my thigh. "You're perfect. Every inch of you."

I felt him position himself, the broad head of his cock sliding against my entrance, teasing. I pushed back toward him, desperate, and he gripped my hip hard enough to hold me still.

"Patience," he said, but his voice was strained, barely controlled.

"We don't have time for patience."

He laughed, low and dark, and then he pushed into me.

The stretch of him stole my breath. He filled me slowly, inch by inch, until I could feel him everywhere. I pressed my forehead against the wall and tried to remember how to breathe, tried to hold back the sound building in my throat.

"You feel incredible," he said against my ear, his chest pressed to my back, his hands holding my hips. "So tight. So perfect."

"Move," I whispered. "Please."

He pulled back, almost all the way out, and then thrust deep. I clamped my hand over my mouth to muffle the cry. He set a rhythm that was slow and deliberate, each thrust pressing me harder against the wall. The friction built with every stroke, the heat pooling low in my belly.

His hand slid from my hip to my front, finding me again, his fingers working in time with his thrusts. I was trembling, my legs shaking, my body tightening around him.

"Come for me," he said, his voice barely a whisper. "I want to feel you."

It crashed through me like a wave. I shattered around him, my body clenching and pulsing, my hand pressed so hard against my mouth I tasted blood. He followed moments later, his rhythm faltering, his grip bruising on my hips as he buried himself deep and let go with a groan he buried in my shoulder.

We stayed there, pressed together, breathing hard. The moonlight painted the room in silver. Our reflection watched us from the mirror across the studio, tangled and disheveled and unmistakable.

Then he pulled back, and I felt the loss of him like a physical ache. He adjusted my dress with careful hands, smoothing the fabric over my hips, his touch almost tender now.

I turned to face him. His hair was mussed where my fingers had been. His jaw was flushed. He looked wrecked, and I loved it.

"I meant what I said during the dance," he said, his voice still rough. "I don't want this to end."

I searched his face. "What are you saying?"

"I don't know exactly. But I know I'm not ready to let you go."

The words hung between us, heavy with possibility. I felt the weight of them in my chest, my throat, the trembling of my hands against him.

"What about Evie?" I asked. "What about Nicole?"

He was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "I don't have answers yet. But I know I want to find them with you."

I closed my eyes and leaned my forehead against his. The guilt was still there, sharp and real. But so was the hope. So was the desire that still hummed through my blood.

"I can't promise anything," I whispered. "I can't be the one who breaks up your family."

"You're not." His hand cupped my cheek. "I'm the one who chose this. I'm the one who keeps choosing it."

He kissed me again, soft and lingering. Then he stepped back, his hands finding mine.

"I'll figure it out," he said. "Just give me time."

I squeezed his fingers. "Time I have."

He smiled then, a real smile, the kind that crinkled the corners of his eyes. "Then we'll see where this goes."

He released my hands, turned, and walked out of the studio. The door clicked shut behind him.

I stayed there for a long moment, my back against the wall, my heart hammering, my lips still tingling from his kiss. The moonlight painted the room in silver and shadow. The mirror showed me a woman I barely recognized anymore.

But I liked her. I liked who I was becoming when I was with him.

I smoothed my dress, checked my reflection one more time, and walked back into the party.

Nicole found me near the bar. "Where did you go?" she asked, linking her arm through mine.

"Just needed a minute," I said. "The dance took a lot out of me."

She beamed. "It was perfect. You and Dad looked amazing together."

I smiled and didn't let the guilt show. "He's a great partner."

"I'm so glad I did this," she said, leaning her head on my shoulder. "Having you here made everything better."

I wrapped my arm around her and held her close, my best friend, the woman who trusted me more than anyone.

"Me too," I said.

And I meant it. Even with everything else, I meant it.

The party wound down. Guests trickled out. Evie and Nicole said their goodbyes at the door. I helped clear glasses and gather coats, moving through the motions like a ghost.

When I finally stepped out into the cool night air, my car keys in my hand, I saw him standing on the front porch, silhouetted against the warm light from the house.

He was watching me.

I paused at the bottom of the steps. The street was quiet. The house was alive behind him, but the moment belonged to us.

"Goodnight, Mr. Torrence," I said, my voice soft in the darkness.

"Goodnight, Ms. Parker." His voice was low and steady. "Thank you for the dance."

I smiled, a real smile, and let it reach my eyes. "Anytime."

I got into my car and drove away, watching him in the rearview mirror until the house disappeared from sight.

The future stretched out ahead of me, uncertain and electric. I didn't know what would happen next. I didn't know if he would really leave his wife or if we would keep meeting in shadows.

But I knew one thing for certain.

I would dance with him again.
