The Audit
Evelyn Lopez stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows of their penthouse, the city lights below fracturing into diamond shards through her wineglass. The dark waves of her hair spilled over one shoulder, brushing the silk of her blouse. At thirty-five she still turned heads without effort, her body curved and generous in all the ways that had first drawn Rafael to her. Yet tonight the elegance felt like armor, something she tightened around herself as the knot in her stomach refused to loosen.
The soft click of the front door made her turn. Rafael stepped inside, his slim shoulders rigid beneath the tailored suit. His slicked-back hair caught the low light, but the usual confidence was gone. Sweat beaded at his temples.
“They sent the letter,” he said without greeting. “External audit starts Monday. Chief auditor is Victor Kane. He’s… not the kind who looks the other way.”
Evelyn set her glass on the marble console with deliberate care. “How bad?”
Rafael loosened his tie as if it were a noose. “Bad enough that I canceled the trip to Miami. The narco accounts are buried deep, but Kane has a reputation. He finds everything.”
She felt the first cold lick of fear slide down her spine. For years she had told herself the money was just money. Rafael’s private bank catered to certain clients. Violent clients. She had attended the galas, worn the diamonds, and never asked for details. Now the details were coming for them.
“We should have gotten out years ago,” she said, voice low but edged. “Every time I warned you about those deposits from Cartagena, you said it was handled. You said the lawyers were airtight.”
He crossed to the wet bar and poured himself two fingers of scotch. His hands shook. “It was handled. Until it wasn’t. These people don’t let you walk away, Evelyn. You know that. One wrong word to the wrong auditor and we don’t lose just the penthouse. We lose everything. Maybe our lives.”
She watched him toss back the drink. The argument was an old one, worn smooth at the edges, yet tonight it felt razor sharp. Her wide hips shifted as she leaned against the window frame, arms folded beneath her full breasts. “So what do we do? Pay him off? Offer him a seat on the board?”
Rafael’s laugh was bitter. “Men like Kane don’t want money. He already has plenty. What he wants is control.”
The intercom buzzed before she could answer. Rafael stiffened, then crossed to the panel. “Yes?”
“Mr. Kane is downstairs. He says dinner was arranged for eight. His car is waiting.”
Evelyn’s pulse spiked. “He’s here? Now?”
Rafael would not meet her eyes. “I thought… maybe if we spoke to him in person, showed him we’re reasonable. I didn’t realize he would come himself.”
She wanted to refuse, to barricade the door and pretend none of this existed. Instead she smoothed her hands down the front of her navy sheath dress, the fabric clinging to every generous curve. “Then we speak to him. And we remember who we are.”
Twenty minutes later they sat across from Victor Kane at a corner table in the city’s most exclusive rooftop restaurant. The salt-and-pepper hair at his temples caught the candlelight. His broad shoulders filled the charcoal suit with quiet authority. Piercing gray eyes studied them both as if they were already assets on a balance sheet.
“Mr. and Mrs. Lopez,” he said, voice smooth and low. “Thank you for joining me on such short notice.”
Evelyn kept her posture straight, chin lifted. Up close he was taller than she expected, easily six-three, and the way he looked at her made the fine hairs on her arms rise. Not lust exactly. Something colder. More certain.
Rafael cleared his throat. “Mr. Kane, we understand the audit is going to be thorough. We’re prepared to cooperate fully. Perhaps there are… areas of mutual interest we could discuss.”
Victor’s smile did not reach his eyes. He lifted a hand and the waiter appeared with a bottle of wine so expensive Evelyn recognized the label from their own cellar. Once their glasses were filled, Victor leaned back and regarded them both.
“Let me be clear so there is no misunderstanding. I know about the Cartagena accounts. I know about the shell companies in Panama. I know the precise percentage your bank takes for cleaning money that buys guns, women, and political assassinations. My report, if filed as written, will put your husband in federal prison for the rest of his life. You, Mrs. Lopez, might avoid charges, but the reputational damage would be… permanent.”
Evelyn felt the blood leave her face. Under the table Rafael’s hand found her knee and squeezed too hard. Victor took a slow sip of wine, then set the glass down with finality.
“However,” he continued, “I am a pragmatic man. I understand the pressures of certain business relationships. And I find that I have developed an interest in something other than prosecution.”
His gaze slid to Evelyn and stayed there. She felt the weight of it like a physical touch along her throat, her breasts, the flare of her hips. Her full lips parted, but no sound emerged.
Rafael’s voice cracked. “What exactly are you proposing?”
Victor reached across the table and laid his hand over Evelyn’s where it rested beside her water glass. His palm was warm, dry, and far too confident. The touch sent an unwelcome spark up her arm. She tried to pull away. His fingers tightened just enough to warn her.
“One night,” Victor said calmly. “Your wife’s complete and willing presence in a hotel suite I choose. No limits. No negotiation. In exchange I will approve the audit, sign off on every account, and your little empire remains untouched. Refuse, and I file the report before breakfast.”
Evelyn’s breath stalled. The restaurant noise faded to a dull roar. All she could feel was the heat of his hand covering hers, the way his thumb traced a slow circle against her knuckles. Shame flooded her cheeks. Worse, something darker stirred low in her belly, a treacherous flutter she refused to name.
“You can’t be serious,” she whispered. Her voice sounded foreign, too breathy.
“I am entirely serious, Mrs. Lopez.” Victor’s gray eyes held hers without mercy. “You are a beautiful woman. Poised. Elegant. I have watched you on my surveillance for three weeks. The way you move, the way your body fills your clothes. I have decided I want to see how that elegance looks when it comes apart.”
Rafael made a strangled sound. “Please. There must be another way. Money. We can—”
“There is no other way.” Victor released Evelyn’s hand but only so he could trail his fingers along her wrist, up the bare skin of her forearm. The caress was deliberate, possessive. “You will prepare the suite exactly to my specifications, Mr. Lopez. The Presidential at the Continental. Tomorrow night at seven. Silk sheets the color of midnight. A bottle of 1996 Krug. The black La Perla set I sent to your office this afternoon. She will wear it under the red dress I also sent. Nothing else.”
Evelyn’s mind reeled. He had already chosen lingerie for her. He had sent it to her husband’s office. The arrogance of it should have enraged her. Instead her nipples tightened traitorously against the lace of her bra.
She hated her body for the reaction. Hated the slick of heat gathering between her thighs even as her mind screamed that this was blackmail, that she was a respected banker’s wife, that she loved her husband.
Victor leaned closer. His voice dropped to a register that vibrated through her bones. “Say the words, Evelyn. I need to hear you agree.”
Her lips trembled. Rafael stared at the tablecloth as if it might swallow him. The silence stretched until she thought she might shatter.
“I… agree,” she managed. The words tasted like ash and something dangerously sweet. “Under duress. But I agree. One night.”
Victor’s smile was slow, satisfied. His fingers gave her wrist one last lingering stroke before he withdrew. “Good girl.”
The praise landed low in her stomach like a stone dropped into still water. She pressed her thighs together beneath the table and despised the fresh rush of warmth.
He slid a heavy cream business card across the linen. Her name was written on it in precise black ink, along with a room number and a single instruction: *Wear your hair down.*
“Go home, Evelyn. Rest. You will need your strength. Your husband and I have details to arrange.”
She wanted to argue, to demand they leave together. Instead she rose on unsteady legs. The dress suddenly felt too tight across her generous breasts, the fabric brushing sensitive nipples with every breath. Victor stood as well, towering over her. For one terrifying, electric moment she thought he might kiss her right there.
He did not. He simply brushed a strand of dark hair behind her ear, the gesture strangely intimate. “Do not disappoint me tomorrow. The consequences would be… severe.”
Evelyn nodded once, unable to speak. She walked away from the table on legs that felt detached from her body. Rafael did not follow. She caught a last glimpse of her husband hunched forward, listening as Victor spoke in low, commanding tones. Preparing the suite. Preparing her.
The car ride home passed in a haze. When she stepped back into the penthouse the silence pressed against her like a living thing. She kicked off her heels and padded barefoot to the bedroom, the cool marble soothing her overheated skin.
On the bed lay a large white box tied with a blood-red ribbon. She knew what it contained before she opened it. The red dress was exquisite, dangerously low-cut, designed to display the deep valley between her breasts. Beneath it rested the black La Perla lingerie, so delicate it looked as though it might dissolve at a touch. She lifted the bra. The cups were sheer. Her nipples would be clearly visible.
Evelyn sank onto the edge of the mattress. Her hands trembled as she held the tiny scrap of lace. She should throw it across the room. She should call the authorities. She should do anything except what she did next.
She pressed the cool silk against her cheek and closed her eyes. The memory of Victor’s fingers on her wrist returned, stronger now. The calm certainty in his voice. The way he had looked at her as if he already owned her. Her breath hitched.
Shame burned through her, hot and liquid. Yet beneath it, undeniable, her body was responding. Her generous breasts felt heavy, aching. Between her thighs she was slick, embarrassingly so. She slid one hand down her stomach, hesitating at the hem of her dress.
“No,” she whispered to the empty room. But her fingers kept moving, bunching the fabric, slipping beneath the lace of her own panties. The first brush against her swollen clit tore a soft gasp from her throat.
She pictured Victor’s broad shoulders, the salt-and-pepper hair, those piercing gray eyes that saw every secret she tried to hide. Her fingers moved faster. The shame only sharpened the pleasure. She was a married woman. A respected woman. And tomorrow night she would spread her legs for a man who had blackmailed her while her husband waited somewhere nearby like a whipped dog.
The orgasm caught her by surprise, sudden and vicious. She cried out, hips jerking against her own hand as waves of unwanted pleasure crashed through her. When it passed she collapsed back onto the bed, chest heaving, tears pricking at the corners of her expressive brown eyes.
The business card lay on the nightstand beside her. She picked it up and stared at the bold handwriting. *Wear your hair down.*
Evelyn traced the letters with a fingertip still wet from her own arousal. Tomorrow night she would obey. The knowledge settled over her like a dark, velvet cloak.
She did not know whether the shiver that ran through her was terror or anticipation. Perhaps both. And that terrified her most of all.
Downstairs, she heard the front door open. Rafael had returned. She could picture him already moving through the apartment, making calls, arranging the suite exactly as Victor had demanded. Her husband, once her protector, now reduced to preparing the bed where another man would claim her.
Evelyn closed her eyes and let the conflicted heat bloom again between her thighs. The audit’s shadow had fallen across their lives, and nothing would ever be the same.
