Block Party Sparks
Emily Sears adjusted the hem of her modest sundress as she stepped out onto the sidewalk. The neighborhood block party was already in full swing down the street, with music drifting from speakers and the smell of grilled burgers hanging in the warm evening air. Mark was supposed to be here with her, but his last-minute business trip had pulled him away again. She had almost stayed home, but the quiet house felt too empty after three days alone. A little social time with the neighbors could not hurt.
She walked slowly toward the cluster of folding tables and lawn chairs set up in the cul-de-sac. Most of the faces were familiar, yet she kept her greetings polite and brief. Conservative by habit, she wore her shoulder-length blonde hair pinned back neatly and her dress cut just below the knee. It was safe. Comfortable. The kind of outfit that did not draw attention.
Half an hour later she stood near the dessert table, nursing a plastic cup of lemonade, when a deep voice cut through the chatter behind her.
"You must be the one they call Emily."
She turned and looked up, way up, into the face of a man she had not seen before. Tall, broad-shouldered, with dark stubble along a strong jaw and a confident smile that reached his eyes. He wore a fitted black T-shirt that stretched across his chest and faded jeans that sat low on his hips.
"I am," she said, offering a small smile. "And you are?"
"Frederic. Just moved in two doors down. Contractor. Figured I should show my face at the neighborhood shindig." He extended a hand, and when she took it his grip was warm and firm, lingering a second longer than necessary.
"Nice to meet you, Frederic. Welcome to the street." Emily withdrew her hand, suddenly aware of how her pulse had quickened.
He leaned one hip against the table, studying her openly. "Your husband could not make it tonight?"
"Mark is traveling for work. He is an accountant." She took a sip of lemonade to steady herself. "These parties are usually his thing."
"Shame. Leaves you to fend for yourself." Frederic's gaze flicked down and back up, slow enough that she felt it. "Though you look like you handle yourself just fine."
Heat crept into her cheeks. She laughed lightly, the sound a little breathier than she intended. "I manage."
The conversation flowed easier than she expected. Frederic asked about the neighborhood, the best local spots, and she found herself answering more freely than usual. He listened with an intensity that made her feel seen. When she mentioned she used to run track in college, his eyebrows lifted.
"That explains the legs," he said, voice low. "And the rest of the package. You have got a body most women in this neighborhood would kill for. Curves in all the right places. Very easy on the eyes, Emily."
She blinked, caught off guard by the directness. No one had spoken to her like that in years. Not Mark. Not anyone. The compliment landed hot and unexpected, sending a small thrill straight through her middle. She shifted her weight, suddenly conscious of how the sundress clung to her hips and the way her breasts filled the modest neckline.
"That is very forward of you," she said, trying for disapproval but hearing the faint tremor in her own voice.
Frederic grinned, unapologetic. "I call it like I see it. You are fit, but soft where it counts. Bet you turn heads without even trying."
Emily opened her mouth, then closed it. She should excuse herself. She should walk away. Instead she stayed rooted, listening as he continued, each word landing with casual confidence that made her stomach tighten in a way she had not felt in a long time.
They talked for another twenty minutes. He told her about the wild backyard parties he planned to throw once he finished fixing up his place. She found herself laughing at his stories, leaning in slightly when he described the music and the late-night crowds. Every time his eyes drifted over her figure, she felt a fresh spark of awareness, equal parts flattery and something darker she did not want to name.
When the sun finally dipped low and people began packing up, Emily glanced at her watch. "I should head home. It is getting late."
Frederic nodded, that same easy smile in place. "Good meeting you, Emily. Do not be a stranger. My door is always open if you ever need anything."
She murmured a polite goodbye and turned away, feeling his gaze follow her down the street. The walk back to her house felt longer than usual. Her skin tingled where the evening breeze touched it, and the memory of his voice replayed in her head.
Inside the quiet house she kicked off her shoes and leaned against the closed front door. The silence pressed in. Mark would not be home until the weekend. She wandered into the kitchen, poured a glass of water, and stared out the window at Frederic's darkened yard two doors down.
The compliments circled back. "Curves in all the right places." "Easy on the eyes." She pressed a cool palm to her flushed cheek. It was nothing. Just neighborly talk. Yet the way he had looked at her, bold and appreciative, had stirred something long dormant. A small, guilty warmth pooled low in her belly.
She climbed the stairs to the bedroom, changed into her nightgown, and slid under the covers. Sleep did not come quickly. Instead she lay there replaying the conversation, wondering what it would feel like to hear that voice again, closer, saying even bolder things. Curiosity flickered, bright and insistent, and for the first time in years Emily Sears fell asleep with the image of another man's eyes on her body.
