The Booster Meeting

Lindsay Slampt pulled her sensible sedan into the long circular driveway and killed the engine. The Byrd mansion loomed ahead, all glass and stone and money, nothing like the modest split-level she shared with Preston. She smoothed her modest navy blouse and knee-length skirt one last time, checked that her wedding ring sat straight, and told herself this was strictly business. PTA business. Nothing more.

Steve Byrd opened the heavy front door before she could knock. He filled the frame, tall and broad-shouldered in a crisp button-down that probably cost more than her monthly grocery budget. Early forties, salt at the temples, the kind of man who looked like he expected the world to rearrange itself for him.

"Mrs. Slampt," he said, voice low and warm. "Right on time. Come in."

She stepped inside, immediately aware of how plain she looked against the marble floors and soaring ceilings. "Thank you for meeting me here, Mr. Byrd. I know it's after hours."

"Steve, please. And it's my pleasure. The house is quieter after the staff leaves." He gestured toward a sunken living room where a bottle of wine already waited on the coffee table. "I thought we could talk comfortably. Red all right?"

Lindsay hesitated. One glass wouldn't hurt. She needed the booster's money for the spring gala, after all. "Just a small one. Thank you."

He poured generously anyway, handing her the glass before settling into the leather chair opposite. His eyes traveled over her once, not crude, but appreciative. "You look different out of the school office. Softer. That blouse suits you."

Heat touched her cheeks. She crossed her legs and took a sip. "We should probably discuss the donation first. The PTA could really use the extra funds for the new playground equipment and the silent auction."

Steve leaned forward, elbows on his knees. "We'll get to that. Tell me about you first. How long have you been running the PTA?"

The conversation started professional enough. She explained the budget shortfalls, the volunteer shortages, the way parents always promised more than they delivered. Steve listened, asked sharp questions, and refilled her glass without asking. Somewhere between the second and third sip the air shifted.

"You know what I noticed the first time I saw you at that school board meeting?" he asked, voice dropping. "The way you move. Most women your age have already let themselves go. Not you. You've got real curves under those conservative clothes. Full hips. A waist a man wants to put his hands around. And those breasts. They deserve better than that buttoned-up blouse."

Lindsay's fingers tightened on the stem of her glass. "Mr. Byrd—Steve—that's not appropriate."

"It's honest." He smiled, slow and unapologetic. "Your husband is a lucky man. Does he tell you that?"

She thought of Preston, sweet and distracted, barely glancing up from his phone most nights. "We should stick to the donation."

Steve rose and crossed to her side of the couch, sitting close enough that she caught the clean scent of his cologne. "Fifty thousand for the playground. Another twenty for the auction. No strings. Except one."

Her pulse kicked. "What kind of strings?"

"I want to see you relax for once. You're wound so tight I can feel it from across the room." His hand settled lightly on her knee, warm through the fabric of her skirt. "Let me help."

Lindsay didn't pull away immediately. The wine hummed in her blood. His thumb stroked once, slow, and heat bloomed low in her belly, unexpected and unwelcome. "I can't. I'm married. This isn't why I came here."

"I know exactly why you came." His hand slid higher, fingers brushing the inside of her thigh just above the knee. The contact sent a sharp jolt through her. "But you're still here."

She swallowed. "We shouldn't."

"Tell me to stop and I will." His voice stayed calm, commanding. The hand on her thigh didn't move, but the weight of it felt heavier than it should. "Or tell me what you really want."

Lindsay opened her mouth. Closed it. Her mind flashed to Preston at home, probably microwaving leftovers, trusting her completely. Guilt twisted, but so did something hotter, something starved. She shifted, and Steve's fingers inched another inch higher.

"I don't know what I'm doing," she whispered.

"You're letting yourself feel something for once." He leaned in. His free hand came up to cup her jaw, thumb brushing her lower lip. "Breathe, Lindsay."

The kiss happened before she could decide. Steve's mouth covered hers, firm and unhurried, tasting of expensive wine and certainty. She made a small sound, half protest, half surrender, and his tongue slid against hers. The hand on her thigh squeezed once, possessive. Her body answered before her brain caught up, nipples tightening against the modest bra, thighs pressing together around his fingers.

When he pulled back she was breathing hard. Her lips felt swollen. Shame crashed in immediately, hot and sickening.

"I have to go." She stood too fast, nearly stumbling. The room tilted from the wine and the kiss and the way her body still hummed.

Steve didn't chase her. He simply watched, calm and satisfied. "The checks will be at the next PTA meeting. And Lindsay? You'll be back."

She didn't answer. She grabbed her purse and walked out on unsteady legs, the taste of him still on her tongue, the ghost of his hand on her thigh burning through every layer of fabric. The drive home felt endless. Every mile she told herself it was a mistake, one mistake, never again. But the ache between her legs disagreed, and the guilt only made the ache sharper.

By the time she pulled into her own driveway, her hands were shaking. Preston would be waiting inside, kind and oblivious. Lindsay closed her eyes, pressed her thighs together, and wondered how long she could pretend nothing had changed.
