The First Glance
Simone Ninnes woke at six thirty every morning, the alarm slicing through the quiet like it always did. She rolled out of bed, stretched her arms overhead, and caught her reflection in the dresser mirror. Shoulder length auburn hair tousled from sleep, sharp green eyes still heavy. Her body felt tight from last night's yoga, the way it always did. Athletic lines under the thin cotton of her nightshirt. She pulled on a robe and padded downstairs to start the coffee.
Omar was already in the kitchen, scrolling through his phone at the table. He looked up with that same mild smile he had worn for the last three years of their marriage. "Morning," he said. His dark hair showed more gray at the temples now. He wore the same gray suit he rotated through the workweek. Nothing about him ever changed much.
"Morning," she answered, pouring two mugs. She handed him one and sat across from him. The silence settled between them like it always did. They talked about schedules and bills and what to order for dinner. Nothing deeper. Nothing that made her pulse pick up. She stirred her coffee and wondered when exactly the spark had gone out. When had she stopped reaching for him at night? When had he stopped reaching back?
She dressed in a fitted navy blouse and pencil skirt, the fabric hugging her hips just right. Professional. Controlled. She checked her makeup twice before heading out. Another day at the marketing firm where she coordinated campaigns that other people got credit for. Another evening of coming home to the same quiet house.
That afternoon the company invited spouses to the quarterly mixer at the downtown hotel. Omar had mentioned it the night before in that offhand way he had. "They want everyone there. Calvin's making a big announcement." She had agreed without enthusiasm. It was something to do. A change of scenery.
She arrived with Omar just after five. The ballroom hummed with low conversation and the clink of glasses. She kept a polite smile on her face as they moved through the crowd. Omar introduced her to a few colleagues she already knew from previous events. She nodded and made the right small talk. Her eyes drifted across the room anyway.
Then she saw him.
Calvin Markets stood near the bar, tall and athletic in a tailored charcoal suit that fit like it had been cut for him alone. Twenty nine years old and already running the division Omar reported to. His piercing blue eyes scanned the room with easy command. People leaned in when he spoke. He laughed once, low and confident, and the small group around him laughed with him. Simone felt something tighten in her chest. Professional jealousy, she told herself. That was all it was. Omar had been passed over for the same role last year. Calvin had taken it without breaking stride.
Omar touched her elbow. "That's him," he said quietly. "Calvin got the promotion last week. Regional lead. Everyone's talking about it."
Simone kept her expression neutral. "Good for him." The words tasted flat. She watched Calvin gesture with one hand while he spoke to an older executive. The movement was smooth, decisive. He owned the space around him without trying. Omar stood beside her, shoulders slightly rounded, waiting for the conversation to include him. The contrast landed somewhere low in her stomach.
She sipped her wine and let her gaze follow Calvin as he moved toward another cluster of people. A woman in a fitted red dress stepped into his path. Trina Linares. Simone recognized her from the few times Omar had mentioned Calvin's assistant. Twenty seven, curvaceous, dark wavy hair falling past her shoulders. Bold makeup. The kind of presence that drew eyes without effort.
Trina smiled up at Calvin, one hand resting lightly on his forearm as she spoke. Her lips moved close to his ear. Whatever she said made him tilt his head and answer in that same smooth voice. His hand brushed the small of her back for a brief second. Nothing overt. Just enough. Trina's laugh carried across the space between them, low and teasing. She leaned in again, her body angled toward his like a magnet finding true north.
Simone's fingers tightened around her glass. The jealousy she expected arrived on schedule. Calvin's effortless rise. Omar's quiet acceptance of it. The way Trina moved through the room as if she already knew exactly what she wanted and how to get it. But underneath the resentment something else flickered. A small, hot spark of curiosity. What would it feel like to stand that close to that kind of power? To watch someone else claim it while you stayed perfectly still?
Omar was still talking beside her. "Trina's sharp. She keeps Calvin organized. He says she's the reason half his deals close." Simone made a noncommittal sound. Her eyes stayed on the pair near the bar. Trina's fingers lingered on Calvin's sleeve a moment longer than necessary. Calvin's mouth curved in a private smile meant only for her. The air between them felt charged even from across the room.
Simone shifted her weight. The pencil skirt brushed her thighs. She imagined for one brief second what it would be like if Omar were the one standing there instead. If Trina's hand rested on his arm while Calvin watched from the sidelines. The thought surprised her. It carried heat she had not expected. She pushed it down and finished her wine.
Omar glanced at her. "You okay? You look distracted."
"Just thinking about work," she said. The lie came easily. She set her empty glass on a nearby tray and smoothed her blouse. Across the room Calvin turned, his blue eyes sweeping past her without pausing. Trina stayed at his side, her posture relaxed and proprietary at once. The flicker inside Simone pulsed again, stronger this time. She did not name it yet. She only felt it. A quiet, insistent pull toward something she had never allowed herself to want.
The mixer continued around them. Voices rose and fell. Omar kept speaking about quarterly targets and Calvin's new responsibilities. Simone listened with half an ear. Her mind kept returning to the way Calvin had moved through the crowd. Commanding. Unapologetic. The way Trina had answered that presence with her own bold invitation. The spark refused to fade. It settled low and warm, waiting for her to decide what to do with it.
She touched Omar's arm. "Let's head home soon," she said. Her voice stayed measured, the way it always did. Inside, the first threads of a new thought began to weave themselves together. She did not speak them aloud. Not yet. But the glance she had stolen across the ballroom had already changed something small and permanent in the quiet space between her and her husband.
