The Interview
Daryl Cortland stood at the expanse of tinted glass that formed one wall of his top-floor office, hands clasped behind his back. The city stretched beneath him in orderly grids of steel and concrete, a landscape he had shaped through calculated risks and unrelenting control. His latest venture demanded the same precision. The new headquarters for Cortland Investments required an architect who understood not just form and function, but the subtle language of power. Beth Coolridge's portfolio had impressed him on paper. Now he would see if the woman matched her work.
His desk was a slab of black walnut, nearly empty except for a single leather portfolio and a slim tablet. Nothing unnecessary. Nothing that surrendered control. At forty-two, Daryl had perfected the art of revealing only what served him. His dark hair was cut sharp, his angular features set in an expression of cool assessment. The broad span of his shoulders filled his tailored charcoal suit as he turned at the soft chime of the intercom.
"Mr. Cortland, Beth Coolridge has arrived."
"Send her in," he replied, his voice low and measured. He remained standing, aware of how the position emphasized his height and the controlled power in his frame.
The door opened. She stepped inside with the crisp confidence of a woman accustomed to boardrooms, yet he caught the micro-expression that flickered across her face as their eyes met. Slender and polished, she carried a leather case under one arm. Auburn hair twisted into an elegant chignon exposed the delicate column of her neck. Her green eyes held intelligence sharpened by years of proving herself in a male-dominated field. The tailored cream blouse and narrow navy skirt skimmed a body that was lithe yet unmistakably feminine. Professional armor, he noted. But armor always had seams.
"Miss Coolridge," he said, extending his hand across the desk. "Daryl Cortland."
Her palm met his. Warm. Smooth. He closed his fingers around hers with deliberate firmness and held the contact two seconds beyond convention. Her pulse jumped against his skin. When she withdrew, the faintest color had risen along her cheekbones.
"Thank you for making time in your schedule, Mr. Cortland," she said. Her tone was crisp, professional. "Your project brief was fascinating. I've prepared several conceptual directions that align with your parameters for sustainability and corporate presence."
He gestured to the chair positioned directly before his desk. "Sit. And it is Daryl. I find titles create distance, and I prefer to eliminate unnecessary barriers." He watched her settle, noting how she crossed her legs at the ankle rather than the knee. A small tell of deference. Interesting.
Daryl took his own seat, leaning forward slightly. His piercing gray eyes locked onto hers without apology. Most people looked away after a few seconds. She held his gaze, but he saw the effort it required. Her fingers tightened on the edge of her portfolio.
"Begin," he instructed. "Not the rehearsed presentation. Tell me what the building should feel like for the people inside it. Be exact."
Beth opened her case and spread preliminary sketches across the dark wood. As she spoke, her voice gained strength. She described light-filled atriums that encouraged movement, executive floors designed with intentional hierarchy, materials chosen for both acoustics and tactile sensation. Her mind was sharp. Her wit surfaced when she anticipated his objections and met them with concise counters.
Yet beneath the competence, subtle cracks appeared. Each time his gaze remained steady on her face, her breath would catch for half a second. When he leaned closer to indicate a flaw in one elevation, she shifted in her chair. Not discomfort. Something else. He recognized the signs because he had spent years learning them. The slight parting of her lips. The way her pupils had dilated despite the bright office lighting. The unconscious press of her thighs together when he lowered his voice to emphasize a requirement.
"This tower must dominate the skyline without arrogance," he stated, rising from his chair and circling the desk. He stopped beside her, close enough that the heat of his body brushed her shoulder. "It must command respect the moment someone steps into the lobby. Can you design something that makes a person want to yield to its vision, Beth?"
She looked up at him. The prolonged eye contact stretched between them. Her green eyes flickered, dropping to his mouth for a fraction of a second before returning to his gaze. "I can," she answered. Her voice had grown softer, almost breathy at the edges. "But dominance without purpose becomes hollow. The best spaces make people feel secure enough to surrender their defenses. That's where true productivity begins."
The word surrender hung in the air. Daryl felt a surge of dark satisfaction. She had no idea she had just handed him a key. He could see the confusion flicker across her features as her own statement registered. Her polished composure was fraying. Exactly as he had hoped.
He placed one hand on the back of her chair, not touching her but near enough that she must feel enclosed by his presence. "Continue. Show me how you would solve the circulation problem on the twentieth floor."
For the next forty minutes they dissected her concepts. Daryl asked pointed questions that went beyond architecture. He inquired about her process, her willingness to iterate under strict guidance, her ability to place someone else's vision above her own ego. Each answer revealed another layer. She was brilliant. Driven. And beneath the quick wit lay a deep current of something needy that she fought to keep hidden.
His own thoughts remained disciplined, but he could not deny the pull. This woman would look exquisite on her knees, auburn hair loosened, green eyes lifted in complete submission. The image formed with such clarity that he felt his cock stir against the confines of his trousers. He banked the reaction. Control first. Always.
Beth gestured toward a revised floor plan, and her sleeve brushed his forearm. The contact sent a visible shiver through her. She tried to mask it by clearing her throat, but he had already catalogued the response. Her nipples had tightened against the silk of her blouse. The pulse at the base of her throat beat visibly faster. She was aroused. Unsettled by her own reaction to him. The knowledge sent a thrill of predatory satisfaction through his veins.
"Your ideas have merit," he said at last, returning to his chair. He steepled his fingers and studied her. "More than merit. They show promise. However, if we proceed, I demand absolute attention to detail. My expectations are exacting. You will find me uncompromising."
She met his eyes again. The professional mask had slipped further. "I don't shy away from high standards, Daryl. In fact, I thrive under them."
The subtle challenge in her tone delighted him. She was not naturally meek. That would make her eventual surrender all the sweeter. He allowed a rare, faint smile to touch his lips. "We shall see."
Beth began gathering her materials. Her movements were precise, yet he detected the hurried quality beneath them. She wanted to escape the intensity of the room. Escape him. The realization only sharpened his interest.
He stood once more and walked her to the door. At the threshold he placed his hand lightly at the small of her back. Not possessive. Not yet. Just enough pressure to guide her forward while reminding her of his size, his strength, his presence. The contact lasted only a moment, but her sharp intake of breath told him everything.
"Thank you for your time," she said, turning to face him. Her cheeks were flushed. The green of her eyes had darkened. "I'll refine these concepts based on our discussion and send them by Friday."
Daryl held her gaze without blinking. "I look forward to it, Beth. This meeting has been... illuminating."
She nodded once, then stepped into the corridor. He watched her walk away. Her posture remained straight, shoulders squared in determination, but her steps carried a new awareness. As if every nerve ending remained tuned to the man behind her. The elevator doors closed, and she disappeared from view.
Daryl returned to his desk and sat slowly. The office felt different now, charged with the ghost of her scent, something clean and faintly floral. He exhaled, allowing himself a moment of unfiltered thought. She had felt it. The magnetic pull. The quiet command in his voice had reached beneath her carefully constructed exterior and found the submissive core she likely refused to name even to herself.
His fingers drummed once against the walnut surface. He had built his fortune by recognizing hidden value before others did. Beth Coolridge possessed something rare. Intelligence paired with a deep, unspoken craving to yield. The combination called to every dominant instinct he possessed.
Yet he remained cautious. His internal barriers existed for a reason. Intimacy invited vulnerability, and vulnerability invited pain. Still, the image of her flushed and trembling beneath his instructions refused to fade. He wanted to peel back every layer of her control. To watch her fight it, then finally surrender.
Daryl reached for his tablet and opened a secure contact. "Run a deeper background on Beth Coolridge. Personal as well as professional. Discreetly. I want everything."
He set the device aside and turned back toward the windows. The city waited below, orderly and contained. Soon, if his instincts proved correct, Beth would enter his domain more completely. The interview had been only the beginning. The real negotiation would come once he confirmed what he already suspected.
She had left his office unsettled. Aroused. He had seen it in every unconscious signal her body had broadcast. The knowledge settled into his chest like a promise. Six months. A contract. A complete dismantling of the walls she hid behind. The thought sent heat licking through his veins.
For the first time in years, Daryl Cortland felt the stirrings of something deeper than mere strategic interest. He would proceed carefully. Methodically. But he would proceed.
Beth Coolridge was already his. She simply did not know it yet.
