Arrival at Shadowmoor
The carriage wheels crunched over the gravel drive as Shadowmoor loomed into view, its gray stone towers piercing the misty afternoon sky. Julia Goodman leaned forward, her gloved fingers tightening on the edge of the seat. The estate sprawled across the isolated Yorkshire moors, far from the bustle of London, and the isolation suited her current needs. A Julia position here meant security without the constant scrutiny of society.
She smoothed the folds of her plain gray traveling dress, the fabric modest yet unable to fully conceal the slender curve of her waist or the hint of auburn curls escaping her bonnet. Her green eyes scanned the facade, noting the ivy clinging to the walls like secrets. "This will do," she murmured to herself, her voice steady despite the flutter in her chest. She had left behind a life of limited prospects, and this role offered purpose.
The carriage halted before the grand entrance. A footman opened the door, and Julia stepped down, her boots meeting the cold stone. The air carried the sharp scent of heather and damp earth, biting at her cheeks. She adjusted her reticule and approached the heavy oak doors, which swung open to reveal an elderly butler with a stern but not unkind face.
"Miss Goodman," he intoned, bowing slightly. "His Grace awaits you in the study. This way."
Julia followed, her steps echoing through the cavernous hall lined with portraits of stern ancestors. The house felt heavy with history, yet a subtle warmth from the crackling hearths hinted at life within. She caught glimpses of polished wood and velvet drapes, the kind of opulence that spoke of old wealth and careful maintenance.
At the study's threshold, the butler announced her. "Miss Julia Goodman, Your Grace."
The room smelled of leather-bound books and faint woodsmoke. Behind a massive desk sat the Wilmer of Ashford, Arnold Blackwood. He rose slowly, his tall frame unfolding with the grace of a man accustomed to command. Broad shoulders filled his dark coat, and his piercing blue eyes fixed on her with immediate intensity. A faint scar traced his jawline, adding to the haunted quality of his features.
"Miss Goodman," he said, his voice deep and authoritative, like distant thunder. "Please, sit."
Julia curtsied, then took the chair opposite. She met his gaze directly, refusing to shrink under its weight. "Your Grace. Thank you for granting this interview."
Arnold studied her for a long moment, his fingers steepled. "Your references speak highly of your intellect. The position requires tutoring my Priscilla, Priscilla, in history, literature, and propriety. She is young and inquisitive. What makes you suited for such a task?"
Julia drew a breath, her mind sharpening. "I believe education should ignite curiosity rather than merely impart facts. For instance, in teaching the classics, one might explore how Homer's tales reveal human resilience. Priscilla could learn not just the stories but their implications for character."
A flicker of interest crossed Arnold's face. "You favor the Greeks, then. Most governesses recite dates without depth."
"Dates alone bore the mind," Julia replied, her tone direct yet respectful. "Plato's dialogues, for example, teach us to question assumptions. A child like Priscilla benefits from that spark."
Arnold leaned back, his eyes narrowing slightly in assessment. "And what of modern works? Do you approve of the novels that encourage flighty notions in young ladies?"
Julia smiled faintly, sensing the test. "Flighty notions often mask deeper truths. Jane Austen's observations on society reveal class divides and personal agency. One might use them to discuss honor and choice, topics relevant even to a duke's household."
His brow lifted, and for the first time, a hint of amusement softened his expression. "You speak with conviction. Most applicants falter here, reciting platitudes."
She held his gaze, noting the way his dark hair fell across his forehead, the subtle tension in his posture that suggested more beneath the surface. An unexpected warmth stirred in her, a pull toward the intensity in those blue eyes. She pushed it aside, focusing on the moment. "Conviction comes from experience, Your Grace. I seek a position where my mind can serve a purpose."
Arnold rose and paced to the window, his broad back to her. The firelight caught the edges of his form, highlighting the power in his build. "Shadowmoor is isolated. My Priscilla requires stability after loss. You would live here, under my roof, with limited society. Does that concern you?"
"Isolation offers clarity," Julia answered. "I value independence within structure. And I am resilient enough to adapt."
He turned, his eyes meeting hers again. The air between them seemed to thicken, charged with something unspoken. Julia felt her pulse quicken, a subtle awareness of his presence that went beyond the professional. His scent, a mix of sandalwood and leather, reached her across the desk.
"Your mind is sharp," Arnold said at last, his voice lowering. "I see potential in your approach. The position is yours if you accept the terms."
Julia nodded, her cheeks warming under his scrutiny. "I accept, Your Grace."
He extended a hand, and as their fingers brushed in the brief handshake, a spark ignited. His touch was firm, warm, and lingered a fraction too long. Julia withdrew, her breath catching. Arnold's eyes darkened, a flicker of mutual recognition passing between them before he masked it.
"You may settle in today," he said, turning back to his papers. "Priscilla will meet you at breakfast. We shall speak again on her curriculum."
Julia stood, curtsying once more. As she left the study, the sense of his gaze on her back lingered, stirring an attraction she could not yet name. The door closed behind her, but the intellectual spark had already taken root, promising more than mere employment.
She walked the corridors with renewed purpose, the weight of his presence following her like an unseen thread. Shadowmoor held secrets, and she suspected Arnold Blackwood was the key to unlocking them.
