Lemonade and Lingering Eyes
Bethany Graves smoothed the front of her modest blue skirt as she stood in the kitchen, checking the pitcher of lemonade one last time. The afternoon light filtered through the lace curtains, casting soft patterns across the counter where she had arranged two glasses. The house felt unusually quiet with the children at their Wednesday Bible study group at church, a small window of calm in her carefully ordered day. Thomas had mentioned the contractor would arrive around two, something about estimates for the kitchen renovation they had been discussing for months. She told herself this was just another household task, nothing more.
The doorbell rang, its chime echoing through the entryway. Bethany adjusted the pins holding her long auburn hair back from her face and walked to the front door, her steps measured and proper. She opened it to find a tall man standing on the porch, his broad shoulders filling out a simple work shirt, sun-tanned skin suggesting long hours outdoors. He carried a clipboard in one strong, calloused hand.
"Mrs. Graves?" he asked, his voice low and steady, a small smile curving his lips. "I'm Derek Vance. Here for the renovation consult."
Bethany offered a polite smile, the kind she reserved for church visitors and deliverymen. "Yes, please come in, Mr. Vance. My husband mentioned you'd be stopping by. I've just made some fresh lemonade if you'd like a glass while we talk."
Derek stepped inside, his presence seeming to fill the modest foyer. "Call me Derek. And lemonade sounds perfect on a day like this. Thank you."
She led him through to the kitchen, her skirt brushing lightly against her legs with each step. The fabric was conservative, reaching just past her knees, paired with a simple white blouse buttoned to the collar. Nothing revealing, nothing that would draw attention. Yet as she poured the lemonade, she felt his eyes on her for a moment longer than necessary, though she dismissed it as her own imagination.
"Your home is lovely," Derek said, accepting the glass. His fingers brushed hers briefly as he took it, rough against her softer skin. "Thomas mentioned the kitchen needs updating. Something about more space for the family meals."
Bethany nodded, settling into the chair across from him at the small table. "Yes, with the children growing, it would be nice to have room for everyone. We try to keep things simple here, grounded in faith and routine. Homeschooling takes up much of the day, but the kitchen is the heart of it all."
They discussed the renovation details for several minutes, Derek asking practical questions about layout and needs while jotting notes on his clipboard. His easy confidence put her at ease, his questions thoughtful rather than rushed. Bethany found herself relaxing into the conversation, describing the daily rhythms of their household with quiet pride.
"You run quite the ship," Derek remarked, leaning back slightly. His gaze met hers directly, warm and appreciative. "Must be a lot on your shoulders, keeping everything so orderly. And if I may say, you carry it well. That figure of yours suggests you don't sit still much."
The words landed softly, almost casual, but something in them made Bethany's cheeks warm. She shifted in her seat, her hand tightening around her glass. It was a compliment, polite enough on the surface, yet it lingered in a way that felt unfamiliar. No one outside her marriage had ever commented on her figure before, not like that. She offered a small laugh, polite and deflecting. "Well, chasing after little ones and managing lessons does keep a body moving. Thank you for noticing the effort."
Inside, though, a faint flicker stirred. An awareness she couldn't quite name. Derek's compliment had been subtle, wrapped in conversation about the work ahead, but it sent an odd warmth through her chest, down to a place she rarely acknowledged. She pushed the sensation aside, focusing on the lemonade, on the practical details of cabinets and countertops. This was nothing more than light conversation with a contractor. Her life was steady, faithful, built on years of devotion to Thomas and the children.
Yet as Derek continued speaking about timelines and materials, his voice carrying that easy confidence, Bethany felt the warmth linger a moment longer than it should have. She sipped her lemonade, the cool sweetness doing little to quiet the first, tentative awareness blooming beneath her modest blouse.
The conversation stretched on, polite and unhurried, with Derek's occasional smile and steady presence filling the kitchen. Bethany answered his questions about the family's schedule, careful to keep everything professional. Still, when their eyes met again across the table, she noticed the way his gaze held hers just a beat too long, and that unfamiliar warmth returned, subtle but insistent.
She told herself it was nothing. Just the start of a simple home project. But as Derek stood to leave, promising to return with more detailed plans, Bethany felt the flicker settle deeper, a quiet spark she had no name for yet.
