Arrival and Invitation

Zora Pace pulled into the circular drive of the Byrne Wellness Retreat and killed the engine. The building rose before her like something out of a magazine spread, all pale stone and tall glass that caught the late-afternoon light. She checked her watch, then her reflection in the rearview mirror. Shoulder-length auburn hair still looked professional enough after the drive, though a few strands had escaped the clip she usually wore at her own spa. Green eyes stared back at her, tired but focused. This was research, nothing more. A chance to see what the competition was offering with their new hypnosis-enhanced packages.

She stepped out, smoothing the front of her simple blouse and tailored pants. The air smelled faintly of lavender and something warmer, like sandalwood. Her own spa back home was solid, reliable, but lately the bookings had felt flat. Clients wanted more than deep tissue these days. They wanted experiences. Zora told herself she was here to learn, not to compete. Edmund had kissed her goodbye that morning with his usual easy smile and told her to enjoy the break. She had promised to call tonight.

The front doors opened before she reached them. A tall woman in flowing silk stood framed in the entrance, dark hair falling in a sleek line past her shoulders. Olive skin glowed against the soft cream of her blouse. Piercing hazel eyes met Zora’s directly.

“Zora Pace,” the woman said, voice smooth and low. “I’m Helen Byrne. I’ve been looking forward to meeting you.”

Zora extended her hand. Helen’s grip was warm, confident, and lingered just a second longer than necessary. “Thank you for agreeing to the visit. I appreciate the professional courtesy.”

“Of course. Rivals can still learn from one another, don’t you think?” Helen smiled, the expression both welcoming and knowing. She gestured inside. “Come. Let me show you around before we talk business.”

The lobby opened into a space designed for immediate calm. Soft recessed lighting bathed everything in gold. Plush seating clustered around low tables holding bowls of smooth river stones and small dishes of oil. Zora inhaled without meaning to. The scent was richer here, layered with vanilla and something citrusy that made her shoulders drop a fraction.

“Your setup is impressive,” Zora said as they walked. “The online photos don’t do it justice.”

Helen walked beside her, close enough that their arms nearly brushed. “We’ve invested heavily in atmosphere. Clients come here to let go. Everything from the lighting to the oils is chosen to encourage surrender.” She paused at a doorway and glanced at Zora. “You must know how exhausting it is, carrying other people’s tension all day. Your own body pays the price.”

Zora gave a small laugh. “Occupational hazard. I try to keep up with yoga, but the schedule rarely allows it.”

“Then perhaps today we can give you a taste of what we offer our guests.” Helen’s tone remained light, yet something in it invited agreement. “A complimentary session. My treat. Consider it part of the networking.”

Zora hesitated. She had planned to observe, maybe sit in on a demonstration, then drive home. Still, the idea of an hour off her feet sounded dangerously appealing. “I wouldn’t want to impose.”

“You’re not imposing. I’m offering.” Helen’s hazel eyes held hers. “You came here to understand our methods. The best way is to experience them.”

The logic was sound. Zora nodded once. “All right. Thank you.”

Helen led her down a quiet corridor. The walls were painted a soft sage, and the floor absorbed sound so completely that their footsteps seemed to vanish. At the end of the hall she opened a door and stepped aside.

The treatment room was smaller than Zora expected, intimate. A wide massage table dominated the center, draped in crisp white linens. Low lamps cast pools of amber light rather than harsh overhead glare. Shelves along one wall held glass bottles of oil in varying shades of gold and amber. The air here was warmer, thick with the scent of warmed frankincense and sweet almond.

“Make yourself comfortable,” Helen said. “You can leave your clothes on or change into the robe on the hook. Either way, I’ll begin with a simple induction once you’re settled.”

Zora chose the robe, more out of habit than modesty. She stepped behind the screen in the corner and changed quickly, folding her blouse and pants neatly. When she emerged, Helen had dimmed the lamps further. The only illumination came from a single candle flickering on a side table and the soft glow of a salt lamp near the head of the massage table.

“Lie face up for now,” Helen instructed, voice already dropping into a slower rhythm. “Arms at your sides. Let your body settle into the table.”

Zora climbed onto the table. The linens were cool against her skin through the thin robe. She exhaled and tried to quiet the professional part of her mind that wanted to catalog every detail for later notes.

Helen moved to the head of the table. Her hands rested lightly on Zora’s shoulders, thumbs finding the tight spots just below the collarbones. “Close your eyes,” she murmured. “You’ve been carrying so much. Today, you don’t have to carry anything at all.”

Zora obeyed. The warmth of Helen’s palms seeped through the robe. The scent of the oils grew stronger as Helen uncapped a bottle and warmed a few drops between her hands. The first touch, when it came, was slick and deliberate, gliding from Zora’s temples down along her jaw.

“That’s it,” Helen said, the words almost a caress. “Notice how the light touches your eyelids. How the warmth spreads. Nothing to do. Nowhere to be. Just this room, this moment, and the sound of my voice.”

Zora’s breathing slowed without effort. She felt the day’s tension begin to loosen, one small knot at a time. Helen’s voice continued, steady and low, guiding her attention to the weight of her limbs, the softness of the table, the gentle press of skilled fingers.

The first induction had begun.
