The Skeptical Arrival
Danielle Rosales pulled her rental car into the gravel drive and cut the engine. The retreat rose before her like something out of a travel magazine, all stone and dark wood nestled against a backdrop of tall pines. She sat for a moment with her hands on the wheel, taking in the quiet. No traffic noise. No urgent emails pinging her phone. Just the soft rustle of wind through the trees and the distant call of a bird. She had come here out of professional curiosity, nothing more. As a corporate therapist, she needed fresh tools for anxiety clients, and the brochure had promised innovative techniques. Hypnosis still struck her as fringe at best, but she was willing to observe.
She stepped out, smoothing the front of her tailored blouse. Her dark auburn hair remained pinned in its usual tight bun, and the crisp mountain air felt cool against her fair skin. A small rolling suitcase trailed behind her as she approached the heavy front doors. Inside, the lobby opened into a space that immediately slowed her steps. Deep velvet armchairs in shades of burgundy and midnight blue clustered around low tables. Soft lighting glowed from wall sconces, and the scent of cedar and something faintly sweet hung in the air. The atmosphere was serene, almost too perfect, and Danielle felt the familiar urge to analyze it rather than simply enjoy it.
She crossed to the check-in desk, where a woman in a simple uniform offered a warm smile. "Welcome to Wang Retreat. Name, please?"
"Danielle Rosales. I have a reservation for the weekend program."
The woman tapped at a tablet. "Of course, Dr. Rosales. You're just in time for orientation. If you'll sign here, I'll get your key."
Danielle was reaching for the pen when a new voice cut through the quiet. "Dr. Rosales. It's a pleasure to have you here."
She looked up. The man who had spoken stood just behind the desk, tall and lean, with broad shoulders that filled out a dark sweater. Dark wavy hair framed a face marked by calm features and piercing hazel eyes. He moved with measured ease, extending a hand. His grip was firm but not aggressive, and his voice carried a deep, resonant quality that seemed to settle in the space between them.
"Dr. Zachariah Wang," he said. "I lead the sessions. Your work in corporate anxiety management caught my attention on the application."
Danielle released his hand, noting the way his gaze held hers without wavering. There was authority there, quiet and unforced. "Thank you. I'm here to see what your methods might offer my clients. Hypnosis is outside my usual scope, but I'm open to evidence."
Zachariah's mouth curved in a small, knowing smile. "Skepticism is welcome. It keeps the work honest. Your room is ready on the second floor. The introductory group session begins in twenty minutes in the main hall. I hope you'll join us."
She accepted the key card and murmured her thanks, then turned toward the staircase. As she climbed, she replayed the brief exchange. His voice lingered in her mind, smooth and deliberate. She shook the thought away. Professional curiosity only. Nothing more.
The main hall matched the lobby's elegance. Rows of velvet chairs faced a low platform where a single chair waited. A handful of other attendees, mostly professionals like herself, took seats. Danielle chose one near the back, crossing her legs and folding her hands in her lap. She scanned the room, noting exits and the arrangement of furnishings, cataloging details the way she did in every new environment.
Zachariah entered from a side door. He moved to the platform without hurry, his presence filling the space. "Good afternoon. For those new to the process, this introductory session offers a taste of what we do here. No pressure. Simply listen and notice what arises."
He invited everyone to settle. Danielle kept her posture straight, eyes open. She had no intention of participating beyond observation.
Zachariah's voice began, low and rhythmic. "Find a comfortable position. Let your shoulders drop. Notice the weight of your body against the chair."
Danielle listened, mentally noting the progressive relaxation script. Standard enough. Yet there was something in the cadence, the careful pauses, that made her shoulders feel heavier than usual. She shifted slightly, refusing to yield.
"Breathe in slowly. Hold for a moment. Release. With each breath, the room around you grows softer at the edges."
Her eyes blinked once, then again. The velvet beneath her fingers felt warmer. She told herself it was the warmth of the room, nothing else. Still, her thoughts slowed, drifting from the analytical list she had been composing. Zachariah's voice wrapped around the space, steady and unhurried.
"Notice how easy it is to let go of the need to control every detail. Just for these few minutes."
Danielle’s breath caught. The suggestion brushed against her usual defenses. She straightened, forcing her focus back to the words rather than the sensation they produced. Around her, other participants had closed their eyes. She kept hers open, watching Zachariah. His gaze moved across the group and settled on her for a brief moment. The intensity of it sent a faint flush across her cheeks before she looked away.
The session continued with gentle suggestions of calm and focus. Danielle felt an unexpected loosening in her chest, a release of tension she had not realized she carried. It was subtle, nothing dramatic, yet it lingered. When Zachariah guided them back to full awareness, she blinked and found her hands unclenched in her lap.
She rose with the others, gathering her composure. The session had ended, yet a trace of that relaxation remained, warm and unfamiliar. Danielle told herself it was simply the effect of the serene surroundings. Nothing to examine too closely. She had signed up for the weekend to gather information, and that was what she would do.
As she moved toward the door, Zachariah’s voice reached her once more from across the room. "Dr. Rosales. I look forward to hearing your thoughts after the next session."
She nodded, professional and precise. "Of course."
Outside the hall, the retreat’s quiet settled around her again. Danielle walked toward the staircase, the memory of his resonant tone following her. She had felt something shift, however small. The realization brought both curiosity and a flicker of unease. She pushed it down. This was research, nothing personal. Yet as she climbed the stairs, her fingers brushed the velvet railing, and the softness seemed more noticeable than before.
