The New Arrival
Remington Shelton stood at the kitchen sink, rinsing the last of the breakfast dishes while her mind drifted to the quiet ache that had settled between her thighs again. Remington had kissed her forehead that morning before rushing off to the office, the same distracted peck he had given her for months. Their son, Mathew, played quietly with blocks in the next room, but the house felt too still, too predictable. She loved her family, loved the stability of their upscale suburban life, yet the spark that once ignited every touch with her husband had faded into routine. She was thirty-four, still attractive with her soft curves and warm hazel eyes, but she felt invisible in her own marriage.
The recommendation came from her friend Svetlana over coffee the week before. "Loretta Jackson is perfect," Svetlana had said, scrolling through her phone for the number. "Twenty-two, college student, responsible, and great with kids. She needs part-time work and comes highly recommended by the family she nannied for last year." Remington had hesitated at first, reluctant to bring another person into their home, but the mounting pressure of balancing her part-time consulting work with Mathew's schedule pushed her to call. She arranged the interview for that afternoon.
Loretta arrived precisely on time, ringing the doorbell with a confident smile. Remington opened the door to find a petite young woman with long dark hair cascading over her shoulders and striking green eyes that seemed to take everything in at once. Loretta wore form-fitting jeans and a simple blouse that hugged her curvaceous figure without trying too hard. "Mrs. Shelton? I'm Loretta. It's so nice to meet you," she said, extending a hand with a warm, assured grip.
"Remington, please," she replied, stepping aside. "Come in. Mathew is napping, so we can talk freely." They settled in the living room, Remington on the sofa and Loretta perched on the armchair with perfect posture. The interview flowed smoothly. Loretta spoke about her studies in early childhood education, her experience handling toddlers, and her flexible schedule around classes. Remington found herself relaxing, impressed by the younger woman's poise and genuine enthusiasm. "I love creating structure without making it feel rigid," Loretta said, her voice light and engaging. "Kids respond better when they feel respected."
By the end of the conversation, Remington was convinced. She offered the part-time position on the spot, suggesting three afternoons a week plus occasional evenings. Loretta accepted with a bright laugh, her green eyes sparkling. "I think this will be a great fit. Thank you for trusting me with your home." Remington smiled back, though a small flutter of uncertainty stirred in her chest. There was something magnetic about Loretta's presence, an energy that filled the space differently than she expected.
Remington arrived home earlier than usual, loosening his tie as he stepped through the door. Remington introduced them in the foyer. "Remington, this is Loretta, our new nanny. She starts next week." He extended his hand, his charming smile flashing. "Welcome aboard. Remington's been stressed about finding the right person." Loretta's gaze lingered on him for a beat longer than necessary, her fingers brushing his palm as they shook hands. "It's a pleasure, Mr. Shelton. Your wife has such a lovely home. I can already see why she wants to keep things running smoothly."
Remington suggested a quick house tour to familiarize Loretta with the layout. They moved through the downstairs first, Remington pointing out the playroom and kitchen while Remington trailed behind, checking messages on his phone. In the dining room, Loretta paused near the large window overlooking the backyard. "This light is beautiful," she said, turning toward Remington. "You must enjoy family dinners here. It feels so... intimate." Her hand rested lightly on his forearm as she spoke, a casual touch that sent a subtle current through the air. Remington chuckled, his graying temples catching the afternoon sun. "We try. Work keeps me busy, though."
They climbed the stairs next. Remington led the way, but Loretta fell into step beside Remington, her voice dropping to a teasing lilt. "I bet you keep this place spotless, Mr. Shelton. Or does Remington do all the heavy lifting?" He glanced at her, amused. "She handles most of it. I'm useless with laundry." Loretta laughed softly, her shoulder brushing his as they reached the landing. "Well, maybe I can help lighten her load. You seem like the type who appreciates a woman who knows how to take charge."
Remington felt the words land like a faint spark against her skin. She watched as Loretta's eyes flicked over Remington with open appreciation, taking in his fit frame and easy confidence. It was subtle, nothing overt, yet the flirtation hung there, playful and unapologetic. A knot tightened in Remington's stomach, a mix of unease and something warmer, something she couldn't quite name. She had expected professionalism, not this quiet electricity. Her cheeks warmed as she opened the guest room door. "This is where you'll have space if you ever need to stay late," she said, her voice steady but her thoughts racing.
Loretta stepped inside, nodding approvingly before turning back to Remington. "Your wife has excellent taste. Everything feels so welcoming." She smiled at him again, her lips curving in a way that suggested she knew exactly the effect she was having. Remington returned the smile, his posture relaxing in a way Remington hadn't seen in months. "We do our best," he replied. Remington's hand tightened on the doorframe. The unease grew, prickling along her nerves, but beneath it stirred an unexpected flicker of heat, a reluctant awareness of Loretta's bold presence and how it seemed to draw Remington in without effort.
They finished the tour in the master bedroom, where Loretta lingered by the bed, commenting on the soft linens. "This room feels private. Perfect for unwinding after a long day." Her gaze met Remington's again, and Remington caught the brief spark of interest in his eyes. She cleared her throat. "We'll finalize the schedule next week. Thank you for coming by." Loretta nodded, her expression shifting back to polite efficiency. "Looking forward to it. You both seem like wonderful parents."
After Loretta left, Remington stood in the kitchen, pouring two glasses of water while Remington loosened his collar. "She seems capable," he said, his tone casual. Remington nodded, forcing a smile. "Yes. Very... confident." Inside, the spark lingered, twisting into a confusing blend of jealousy and curiosity. She wondered what it would feel like to watch that confidence unfold in their home, and why the thought sent a quiet thrill through her that she wasn't ready to examine.
