Lens on Desire
The key turned in the lock with a satisfying click, and Chloe pushed open the front door of the Nolan house. The familiar scent of lemon polish wrapped around her first, followed by the subtle sweetness of vanilla candles Taylor always kept burning. She dropped her duffel bag by the stairs and took a long breath.
Three weeks of house-sitting. Three weeks of space to breathe, to shoot, to figure out what came next after graduation.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket. Taylor's face lit up the screen, all blonde hair and bright blue eyes, her smile wide even through the pixelated connection.
"You made it! Oh my god, Chlo, thank you again for doing this. I was so stressed about the plants and the mail and Dad being lonely in that big house by himself."
Chloe laughed, kicking off her sneakers. "It's nothing. Seriously. I get a free house and you get peace of mind. Win-win."
"Are you sure? You're not going to throw any wild parties or anything?"
"Tay, I'm going to be taking photos of your garden and reading. Wild parties are not on the agenda."
Taylor's laugh was bright and easy. "Okay, okay. I trust you. Dad said he'd check in on you, make sure everything's running okay. He's next door if you need anything. Seriously, anything. He's useless with feelings but great with leaky faucets."
Chloe's stomach did a small flip. She pushed it down. "Got it. Tell him I'll wave from the window."
"Will do. I gotta run, but text me later, okay? Love you!"
"Love you too."
The call ended. Chloe stood in the quiet of the house, the evening light slanting through the living room windows. She walked through the rooms, trailing her fingers over the furniture, the framed photos of Taylor and her mom, the shelves of books.
She stopped at the hallway mirror and looked at herself. Green eyes, wavy brown hair pulled back in a messy ponytail, a faded band t-shirt. She looked young. She felt young.
She also felt restless.
Her camera bag sat on the kitchen counter. She unzipped it slowly, pulling out her Canon, the weight of it familiar and grounding. She checked the battery, the memory card, adjusted the lens. The ritual calmed her.
She was setting up a shot of the living room's large window when a knock came at the door.
Chloe's heart jumped. She set the camera down and walked to the door, pulling it open.
Garrett Nolan stood on the porch.
He was taller than she remembered, broader in the shoulders. His salt-and-pepper hair was tousled, and he wore a faded gray t-shirt that stretched across his chest. His hands were calloused, resting on his hips. He smelled like sawdust and something clean, like soap and sun.
"Hey, Chloe. Taylor said you'd be here by now." His voice was deep, a little rough around the edges. "Just wanted to make sure you got in okay."
"Hi, Mr. Nolan. Yeah, I just got here. Everything's great."
He frowned slightly. "Garrett. Please. Mr. Nolan makes me feel like I'm about to get a performance review."
She smiled, relaxing a little. "Garrett. Sorry. Old habits."
"Don't apologize." He glanced past her into the house. "You need help with anything? Thermostat's finicky. Garbage goes out on Tuesdays. The hot water heater takes a minute to kick in."
"I think I can handle it. But thanks."
He nodded, but he didn't leave. His eyes drifted to the camera on the counter. "You're a photographer, right? Taylor mentioned you were working on something."
"Trying to. I'm doing a series on light and shadow in domestic spaces. It's for a portfolio piece."
"That sounds..." He paused, searching for the word. "Interesting. I don't know much about that stuff."
"Most people don't. It's just me being pretentious with a very expensive piece of equipment."
He laughed, a low, warm sound. "I doubt that. You want to show me what you're working on?"
The question caught her off guard. She blinked. "Right now?"
"Unless you're busy. I don't want to interrupt."
She shook her head. "No, no. I was just testing some settings. Come in."
He stepped inside, and the house suddenly felt smaller. He filled the space differently than she did, his presence solid and grounding. She grabbed her camera and turned it on.
"I was trying to capture the way the light falls through that window in the late afternoon," she said, pointing. "It's got this golden quality. Really warm."
Garrett walked over to the window, standing in the beam of light. It caught the silver in his hair, the lines on his face. He looked good. Better than good. He looked like a subject.
"Can I take a test shot?" The words left her mouth before she thought about them.
He raised an eyebrow. "Of me?"
"Just to check the exposure. You're standing in the perfect spot. It won't take a second."
He shrugged. "Sure. Why not."
She raised the camera, looking through the viewfinder. He was slightly awkward, his hands shoved in his pockets, his shoulders tight. She lowered the camera.
"Relax. You look like you're at a DMV photo shoot. Just stand naturally."
He let out a breath, rolling his shoulders back. "I don't know how to pose."
"You don't need to pose. Just... be. Look out the window. Think about something that makes you happy."
He turned his head, his profile sharp against the light. She snapped a few shots. The composition was beautiful. The light caught the definition in his jaw, the strong line of his neck.
"Good. That's good. Can you take off your shirt?"
The words hung in the air. She felt her face heat.
"I mean, the flannel. You're wearing a flannel over your t-shirt. The pattern is distracting for the test shots. I just need solid colors to check the light."
He looked at her, his eyes unreadable. Then he pulled the flannel off, dropping it on the couch. He stood there in his gray t-shirt, his arms crossed.
"Better?"
"Much. Thanks."
She took more shots. The light moved, shifting across his chest, highlighting the muscles in his arms. He was fit for his age. Really fit. She could see the definition through the thin cotton.
"Can you turn toward the light a little more? Yeah, like that."
He followed her directions, patient and quiet. She focused on the way the light pooled in the hollow of his throat, the way his hands hung at his sides, the veins in his forearms.
"Okay, one more thing. The t-shirt is casting a shadow. Can you take it off? Just for the test shots. I need to see how the light hits bare skin."
Her heart was pounding. She kept the camera up, hiding her face behind it.
He was quiet for a long moment. Then he reached down, grabbed the hem of his shirt, and pulled it over his head.
Chloe forgot to breathe.
He was tan. His chest was broad, covered in a light dusting of salt-and-pepper hair that tapered down his stomach. His shoulders were wide, his arms defined. He looked like he worked hard, like he used his body every day.
"Like this?" His voice was lower now, rougher.
"Perfect." The word came out breathy. She cleared her throat. "Perfect. Don't move."
She snapped shot after shot. The light was fading, turning deeper, richer. Golden hour. Her favorite time of day.
She moved around him, crouching, angling the lens. He stood still, his eyes following her. There was something in his gaze now, something that hadn't been there before.
She lowered the camera.
Their eyes met.
The room went silent. The air thickened. She could feel the heat coming off his skin from across the room. Her fingers tingled, gripping the camera too tight.
He didn't look away. Neither did she.
The light shifted, casting long shadows across the floor. A car passed outside. A bird called. The world kept moving.
But in that moment, nothing existed except the space between them, charged and electric, waiting for something to break it.
Chloe's breath caught in her throat. She saw the way his eyes traced her face, the way his jaw tightened. She saw the want there, raw and unguarded.
She should look away. She should laugh it off, make a joke, break the tension.
She didn't.
She held his gaze, letting him see her. Letting him see that she saw him too.
The moment stretched, thin and fragile, until he finally spoke.
"Chloe."
Her name on his lips sounded different. Heavier.
"Yeah?"
He took a step toward her. Then another. He stopped a foot away, close enough that she could smell the sawdust and soap, could see the flecks of gray in his stubble.
"Those test shots. You think they came out okay?"
She swallowed. "I think they came out perfect."
He nodded slowly, his eyes never leaving hers. "Good."
The word hung between them, loaded with everything they weren't saying. She felt the pull of him, magnetic and dangerous. She wanted to close the distance. She wanted to see what would happen if she did.
But she didn't.
She held her ground, her heart hammering, her skin alive with awareness.
"I should let you get back to work," he said, his voice rough. "Let me know if you need anything. Anything at all."
"I will."
He grabbed his shirt from the floor, pulling it back on. He didn't look at her as he walked to the door. He paused with his hand on the handle.
"Goodnight, Chloe."
"Goodnight, Garrett."
He left. The door clicked shut behind him.
Chloe stood in the fading light, her camera heavy in her hands. She looked down at the screen, scrolling through the shots.
He was beautiful. Every single frame, he was beautiful.
She set the camera down and pressed her palms to her face, her breath shaky.
This was a bad idea. This was the worst possible idea.
But she couldn't stop the smile that spread across her lips, or the way her skin still tingled where his eyes had touched her.
Three weeks. She had three weeks.
She was already counting down the days.

Three weeks. She had three weeks.
She was already counting down the days.
Darkroom Sparks
The darkroom smelled like chemicals and anticipation. Chloe breathed in the sharp tang of developer solution, her fingers steady as she guided the print through the trays. The red safelight cast everything in a crimson glow, making the small space feel like a secret world separate from the rest of the house.
She had been working for a while, and the image was finally emerging. Garrett Nolan, shirtless, standing in his backyard during golden hour. The muscles of his shoulders and chest caught the light in ways that made her breath catch every time she looked at the print. It was a good shot. A great shot. The kind of photograph that made people stop and stare.
But it wasn't just the technical quality that made her heart race. It was him. The way he looked at the camera, at her, with those eyes that seemed to see right through every defense she had.
The door creaked open behind her. "How's it going in here?"
Garrett's voice, low and warm, sent a shiver down her spine. She didn't turn around, keeping her eyes on the print as it developed in the tray. "Almost there. The light was perfect yesterday. These are going to be incredible."
He stepped closer, and she felt the heat of his body before she saw him. He stopped beside her, close enough that she could smell sawdust and soap on his skin. "Can I see?"
"Not yet. Give it a few more seconds."
They stood in silence, watching the image sharpen. Chloe's hands trembled slightly, and she pressed them flat against the counter to steady herself. The darkroom was small, maybe six feet by eight, and with both of them in here, the space felt impossibly intimate.
"Okay," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Now."
She lifted the print with tongs and transferred it to the stop bath, then the fixer. Garrett leaned in, his shoulder brushing hers as he studied the image.
"Damn, Chloe." His voice was rough. "That's..."
"Good?" She finally looked at him, and the expression on his face made her stomach flip. He wasn't looking at the photo anymore. He was looking at her.
"Incredible," he finished. "You've got a real gift."
"I had a good subject."
The words hung in the air between them, heavy with meaning. Chloe's heart hammered against her ribs as she reached for another negative, needing something to do with her hands. "I've got a few more to develop. You don't have to stay if you're busy."
"I'm not busy." He moved to the other side of the counter, watching her work. "I like watching you. You're so focused. Intense."
She laughed softly, sliding a new sheet of paper into the developer. "It's just developing. Anyone can do it."
"No. Anyone can follow the steps. You've got something else. An eye for what matters."
Chloe's cheeks heated under the red light. She focused on the new print, watching the image emerge. This one was different. A close-up of his hands, calloused and strong, holding a piece of wood from the deck he was building. She had captured the veins in his forearms, the way his fingers curled around the lumber with practiced ease.
"You make my hands look interesting," he said, a hint of surprise in his voice.
"They are interesting. They've built things. Fixed things. They've got stories." She glanced at him. "I like photographing people's hands. You can tell a lot about someone from their hands."
"What do mine tell you?"
The question was soft, almost vulnerable. Chloe turned to face him fully, the print forgotten for a moment. "That you're strong. That you work hard. That you're careful when you need to be." She paused, her voice dropping. "That you know how to touch things the right way."
The air thickened between them. Garrett's eyes darkened, and he took a step closer. "Chloe..."
"I'm just being honest." She held his gaze, surprised by her own boldness. "You asked."
"I did." He reached out, his fingers brushing a strand of hair from her face. The touch was featherlight, but it sent electricity racing across her skin. "You're not what I expected."
"What did you expect?"
"Someone younger. More careless." His hand lingered near her cheek, not quite touching. "You're not careless. You see things. Really see them."
"I see you." The words came out before she could stop them.
Garrett's breath caught. His hand cupped her jaw, thumb tracing the line of her cheekbone. "This is dangerous."
"I know."
"Taylor is my daughter."
"I know."
"I'm forty-nine years old."
"I know that too." Chloe leaned into his touch, her eyes fluttering closed. "I don't care."
"You should." But even as he said it, his other hand found her waist, pulling her closer. "You should run far away from this. From me."
"I don't want to run." She opened her eyes, meeting his gaze. "I want to stay."
Something broke in him then. His control, his restraint, all the careful walls he had built. He kissed her.
It wasn't gentle. It was hungry, desperate, the kind of kiss that had been building for days. His mouth claimed hers, and Chloe melted into him, her hands fisting in his shirt. He pressed her back against the counter, his body hard against hers, and she gasped into his mouth.
"Tell me to stop," he breathed against her lips. "Tell me this is wrong."
"It's wrong." She pulled him closer. "Don't stop."
His hands slid down her sides, gripping her hips, lifting her onto the counter. The chemicals sloshed in their trays, but neither of them cared. Chloe wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him between her thighs, and he groaned against her neck.
"You have no idea," he muttered, his mouth trailing down her throat, "how long I've wanted to do this."
"Since the photoshoot?"
"Since you walked into my backyard." He nipped at her collarbone, and she arched into him. "Since you looked at me like I was something worth seeing."
"You are." Chloe's hands found their way under his shirt, splaying across the warm skin of his back. "You're beautiful, Garrett."
He pulled back, his eyes wild in the red light. "I'm old enough to be your father."
"I don't care." She held his gaze, letting him see the truth in her eyes. "I want this. I want you."
He kissed her again, softer this time, but no less intense. His hands explored her body with a reverence that made her heart ache. He traced the curve of her hip, the dip of her waist, the swell of her breast through her shirt.
"Can I..." His voice trailed off, his forehead resting against hers. "I need to touch you. Really touch you."
Chloe's breath hitched. "Yes."
His hand slid under her shirt, calloused fingers grazing her stomach. She shivered at the contact, at the contrast between his rough skin and her softness. He moved higher, his thumb brushing the underside of her breast, and she whimpered.
"Like that?"
"Yes."
He cupped her breast, his thumb circling her nipple through her bra. Chloe's head fell back, her hands gripping the edge of the counter. The sensation was electric, every nerve ending alive and screaming for more.
"Garrett..."
"I've got you." He unhooked her bra with practiced ease, and then his hand was on her skin, warm and sure. He rolled her nipple between his fingers, and she cried out, the sound swallowed by the small darkroom.
"You're so responsive," he murmured, his mouth finding hers again. "So beautiful."
Chloe's hands fumbled with his belt, her fingers clumsy with desire. He helped her, undoing the buckle, the button, the zipper. His jeans fell open, and she felt him hard against her thigh.
"I want to touch you," she said, her voice low and rough. "Let me."
He guided her hand to him, and she wrapped her fingers around his length. He was thick and hot in her hand, and she stroked him slowly, learning the shape of him. Garrett groaned, his forehead dropping to her shoulder.
"Jesus, Chloe."
"Like this?" She tightened her grip, and he bucked into her hand.
"Yes. Just like that."
His hand slid down her body, past her waistband, into her panties. She was wet, ready, and he groaned when he felt her. "You're soaked."
"For you."
He circled her clit with his thumb, and Chloe's vision went white. She gasped, her grip on him faltering as pleasure shot through her. He didn't stop, his fingers working her with a precision that spoke of experience and attention.
"Come for me," he whispered against her ear. "I want to feel you come."
She was close, so close, but she wanted him with her. She matched his rhythm, stroking him in time with his fingers on her. Their breath mingled, harsh and desperate, as they moved together in the red light.
"Garrett, I'm..."
"I know. Me too."
He kissed her, deep and consuming, and the orgasm crashed over her like a wave. She cried out against his mouth, her body shuddering as she came undone. He followed a moment later, his release hot on her hand, his groan lost in her hair.
They stayed like that, tangled together, breathing hard. The photos hung on the line above them, drying, witnesses to what had just happened. Chloe's heart pounded against her ribs, and she could feel his beating just as fast.
"That was..." She laughed, shaky and amazed. "That was incredible."
Garrett pulled back, his eyes soft in the dim light. He cupped her face, his thumb tracing her swollen lips. "You're incredible."
"I'm just a girl who takes pictures."
"You're so much more than that." He kissed her forehead, her nose, her lips. "I don't know what this is, but I know I don't want it to stop."
"Neither do I."
He helped her clean up, their hands brushing as they worked. The silence was comfortable, filled with the weight of what had just happened. When the last print was hanging to dry, Garrett turned to her.
"Same time tomorrow?"
Chloe smiled, her heart full. "Same time tomorrow."
He kissed her once more, soft and sweet, before slipping out of the darkroom. Chloe leaned against the counter, her legs weak, her body humming with pleasure. She looked at the photos drying above her, at the image of Garrett's hands, his chest, his eyes.
She had captured something real today. Something dangerous. Something she never wanted to let go.
Poolside Exposure
The afternoon sun beat down on the backyard as Chloe stood at the edge of the pool, her toes curling against the warm concrete. She had chosen her swimsuit carefully, a deep emerald bikini that matched her eyes and left little to the imagination. The triangles of fabric barely contained her breasts, and the bottoms rode high on her hips, revealing the lean muscle of her thighs.
Her mind kept drifting back to the darkroom. Garrett's hands on her skin. His groan vibrating against her mouth. The way he'd unraveled her while photos hung drying around them. It had been reckless. Intoxicating. She wanted more.
The sliding door opened and she turned to see Garrett stepping out, a towel draped over his shoulder. He wore dark swim trunks that hung low on his hips, and his chest was bare and tanned, sculpted from years of physical work. Chloe's breath caught in her throat.
"You actually went in already?" he asked, his voice rough with amusement.
"Just testing the temperature." She gestured at the water. "It's perfect."
He dropped the towel on a lounge chair and walked toward her, his eyes traveling over her body with obvious appreciation. "That suit is something else."
"You like it?" She turned slowly, giving him a full view.
"I like what's in it." He stepped past her and dove into the pool with a smooth motion, surfacing near the middle and shaking water from his hair. "Come on in. Water's fine."
Chloe dove in after him, the cool water enveloping her body and washing away the heat of the afternoon. She surfaced near him, close enough to see the droplets clinging to his eyelashes.
"This feels good," she said, treading water.
"Better than the darkroom?"
"Different." She moved closer, her legs brushing against his under the water. "That was intense. This is..." She searched for the word. "Peaceful."
Garrett reached out and pulled her against him, her legs wrapping around his waist instinctively. His hands settled on her hips, fingers pressing into the thin fabric of her bikini bottoms.
"I couldn't stop thinking about you last night," he admitted, his voice low. "Couldn't sleep."
"Me neither." She ran her fingers through his wet hair, pushing it back from his forehead. "I kept replaying everything."
"Which part?"
"All of it. How you looked at me. The things your hands did." She leaned in and kissed him, soft and slow, tasting chlorine and salt on his lips.
He kissed her back, his tongue sliding against hers as his hands roamed her body under the water. The buoyancy made everything feel lighter, easier, as if they were floating in their own private world.
"We should be careful," he murmured against her mouth.
"I know." She kissed him again, deeper this time. "But I don't want to be."
His hands slid up her back, unhooking her bikini top with practiced ease. The fabric floated away, and she pressed her bare chest against his, the sensation of skin on skin electric in the cool water. Her nipples hardened against the cool water and the heat of his chest, and she felt him inhale sharply at the contact.
"Chloe..." His voice was a warning, but his hands were already moving lower, cupping her ass and pulling her tighter against him. She could feel his arousal pressing against her through the thin fabric of his trunks, hard and insistent.
"I want this," she whispered. "I want you."
He carried her to the shallow end, where the water only came to his chest. She could stand now, but she didn't want to. She wanted to stay wrapped around him, feeling every inch of his body against hers. The water lapped at her ribcage as he walked, each step creating friction between them that made her gasp.
Garrett lowered his head and kissed her neck, trailing his lips down to her collarbone, then lower, to the swell of her breasts. She arched into him, moaning softly as his tongue circled her nipple. He took the peak into his mouth, sucking gently, and Chloe's fingers dug into his shoulders. He moved to the other breast, giving it the same attention, his tongue swirling and teasing until she was trembling against him.
"Garrett..."
"Shh." He looked up at her, his eyes dark with desire. "Let me take care of you."
He lifted her onto the edge of the pool, the concrete warm against her skin. She sat with her legs dangling in the water, and he positioned himself between them, his hands gripping her thighs.
"You're so beautiful," he said, his voice rough. "I've been thinking about this all day."
He kissed the inside of her thigh, slow and deliberate, working his way higher. Chloe's breath came in short gasps, her fingers gripping the edge of the pool as his mouth moved closer to where she wanted him most. He took his time, pressing soft kisses along her sensitive skin, his breath warm against her. When he reached the fabric of her bikini bottoms, he hooked his fingers under the edges and pulled them off slowly, leaving her bare and exposed before him.
"God, you're gorgeous," he breathed, looking at her with hunger in his eyes. He kissed her inner thigh again, so close that she could feel his breath on her most sensitive skin.
When his tongue finally touched her, she gasped, her head falling back. He was slow and methodical, exploring her like he had all the time in the world. He started with broad strokes, tasting her, before focusing his attention on the sensitive bundle of nerves at her center. The sun warmed her face while Garrett's mouth worked magic between her legs.
"Oh god," she breathed.
He looked up at her, his eyes meeting hers as his tongue circled her clit. The sight of him there, so focused on her pleasure, sent a wave of heat through her body. He held her gaze as he worked, his tongue moving in slow circles that made her thighs tremble.
"You taste incredible," he murmured against her skin, the vibration of his voice adding another layer of sensation.
He slid two fingers inside her, curling them just right, and Chloe cried out, her hips bucking against his hand. He didn't stop, his mouth and fingers working in perfect rhythm, pushing her higher and higher. He alternated between slow circles and quick flicks, reading her body's responses, adjusting to give her exactly what she needed.
"I'm close," she gasped. "Don't stop."
He doubled his efforts, his tongue flicking faster, his fingers pumping deeper. He found that spot inside her that made her see stars, and he pressed against it rhythmically while his tongue worked her clit. The orgasm crashed over her like a wave, her body shuddering as she cried out his name. Her inner walls clenched around his fingers, and he kept going, drawing out every last tremor until she collapsed against the concrete, panting.
He stood up, water streaming from his body, and pulled her into his arms. "You okay?"
"More than okay." She kissed him, tasting herself on his lips. "That was..."
"Just the beginning."
She slid back into the water, her legs shaky. Now it was her turn. She pushed him back until he was sitting on the edge of the pool, his legs in the water, and she positioned herself between them.
"My turn," she said, her voice teasing.
She pulled down his swim trunks, freeing his erection. He was hard and thick, and she wrapped her hand around him, stroking slowly as she looked up at him. She watched his face as she moved her hand, feeling him pulse in her grip.
"You don't have to," he said, but his voice was strained.
"I want to."
She leaned in and took him in her mouth, the water lapping at her chin. He groaned, his hand tangling in her wet hair. She moved slowly at first, exploring the taste and texture of him, running her tongue along the length of him before taking him deeper. She found a rhythm, bobbing her head while her hand worked the base, her tongue swirling around the tip each time she pulled back.
"Fuck, Chloe." His hips bucked involuntarily. "That's so good."
She looked up at him as she worked, watching his face contort with pleasure. The power of it was intoxicating. She was the one making him feel this way. She was the one driving him crazy. She increased her pace, taking him deeper, feeling him hit the back of her throat. She relaxed her jaw and swallowed around him, and he let out a strangled groan.
His grip on her hair tightened. "I'm gonna come."
She didn't stop. She wanted to taste him, to feel him lose control because of her. She moved faster, her hand and mouth working together, feeling him grow even harder in her mouth. He came with a guttural groan, his body tensing as he spilled into her mouth. She swallowed, looking up at him with a satisfied smile as she licked her lips.
He pulled her up and kissed her, deep and hungry. "You're incredible."
"I know." She grinned, wrapping her arms around his neck.
They floated together in the pool, the water cooling their heated skin. Chloe rested her head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat slow.
"This is crazy," she said softly.
"I know." He pressed a kiss to the top of his head. "But I can't stop."
"Me neither." She looked up at him. "What does that make us?"
He was quiet for a moment. "I don't know. But I know I want to keep seeing you."
"Even with everything?"
"Even with everything." He cupped her face in his hands. "I've never felt this way before, Chloe. Not with anyone."
She believed him. She could see it in his eyes, feel it in the way he held her. It was terrifying and thrilling all at once.
"I should probably get out," she said reluctantly. "Before someone notices I've been gone too long."
"Probably." He kissed her one last time. "Tonight?"
"Tonight." She climbed out of the pool, water streaming from her body. She grabbed her towel and looked back at him. "I'll be waiting."
She walked back to the house, her body humming with pleasure. As she stepped inside, her phone buzzed. A video call from Taylor.
She answered, trying to keep her voice steady. "Hey, Tay."
"Hey! What were you doing? You look flushed."
Chloe laughed, hoping it sounded natural. "Just went for a swim. The pool is amazing."
"Right? I miss it so much. How's everything going? Any trouble with the house?"
"Nope. Everything's fine." She glanced out the window, where Garrett was still in the pool. "Your dad's been really helpful, actually."
"Good. He's always like that. Anyway, I gotta go. Talk later?"
"Sure. Bye, Tay."
She hung up and let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding. The guilt was there, a dull ache in her chest. But so was the thrill. And right now, the thrill was winning.
She looked out the window again, watching Garrett climb out of the pool. He looked up and caught her eye, a small smile playing on his lips.
Tonight, she thought. She could barely wait.
Contractor's Claim
The pool water still dripped from my skin as Garrett lifted me into his arms. My legs wrapped around his waist instinctively, and I clung to his neck as he carried me through the sliding glass door. The cool air of the house hit my wet skin, making me shiver, pressing closer to the heat of his body.
"Where are we going?" I asked, my voice breathless.
"Guest room," he said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "I've been patient enough."
His bare feet left wet prints on the hardwood floor as he walked. I could feel his heart pounding against my chest, steady and strong. His hands gripped my thighs, fingers pressing into the soft flesh with possessive pressure.
"You think I don't know what you've been doing?" he continued, his voice low. "Those looks you give me. The way you position yourself in every shot. You've been teasing me since the moment you walked through that door."
"Maybe," I whispered, tracing the line of his jaw with my fingertips. "Maybe I wanted you to notice."
"I noticed." He pushed open the guest room door with his shoulder. "I've noticed everything."
The room was dim, lit only by the fading golden light filtering through the curtains. The bed loomed large and white, pristine sheets waiting. Garrett laid me down on the mattress with surprising gentleness, considering the intensity in his eyes.
He stood at the edge of the bed, looking down at me. Water still clung to his skin, catching the light. His chest rose and fell with heavy breaths, muscles tensed. I watched him, this man who had been my neighbor, my best friend's father, and now something I couldn't name.
"You're so beautiful," he said, and the words sounded almost pained. "Do you know what you do to me?"
"Show me."
He climbed onto the bed, his body covering mine. The weight of him pressed me into the mattress, a grounding force. His mouth found my neck, teeth grazing the sensitive skin where my pulse fluttered. I gasped, my fingers threading through his damp hair.
"I've been thinking about this all day," he murmured against my throat. "Watching you in that pool. The way the water moved around you." His hand slid down my side, gripping my hip. "I wanted to be the one making you moan."
"You were," I breathed. "You are."
His mouth claimed mine, hungry and demanding. There was nothing tentative about this kiss. It was a statement, a claim. His tongue swept into my mouth as his hand moved between my legs, fingers finding me ready, slick with more than pool water.
"You're wet for me," he said, pulling back just enough to meet my eyes. "Isn't that right?"
"Yes." The word came out as a whimper.
"Say it."
"I'm wet for you, Garrett."
His eyes darkened. "That's my girl."
He kissed his way down my body, slow and deliberate. His lips traced the curve of my collarbone, then lower, following the path of water droplets that still clung to my skin. When he reached the swell of my breasts, he paused, looking up at me with a question in his eyes.
I answered by arching into him, offering myself. His mouth closed over my nipple, hot and wet, and I cried out at the sensation. His tongue circled the tight peak before his teeth grazed it, sending sparks of pleasure straight to my core.
"Garrett," I gasped, my hands fisting in the sheets beneath me.
He groaned against my skin, the vibration adding another layer of sensation. His hand found my other breast, rolling the nipple between his fingers, pinching just hard enough to make me squirm. He alternated between them, mouth and hands, driving me to the edge of sanity with the attention he paid to every inch of my chest.
"I need to taste you," he said, his voice rough as he kissed lower, across my stomach, his tongue dipping into my navel. "I've been thinking about it all day. How you'd feel on my tongue."
His hands parted my thighs, wide and exposing. I felt vulnerable, open to his gaze in the fading light. He settled between my legs, his breath hot against my inner thigh as he pressed kisses there, teasing, taking his time.
"Please," I whispered, not even sure what I was asking for.
"Please what?" He looked up at me, his eyes dark and hungry.
"Please don't make me wait."
He smiled, a wicked expression, and then his mouth was on me. His tongue swept through my folds, and I nearly came off the bed. He held me down with one hand on my hip, the other spreading me open for his exploration.
He found my clit with unerring precision, circling it with his tongue before sucking gently. The sensation was overwhelming, a bolt of lightning that made my vision blur. My hands flew to his hair, gripping, pulling, needing something to anchor me.
"You taste incredible," he murmured against me, the words vibrating through my most sensitive flesh. "Sweet and wet and mine."
"Yours," I agreed, the word dissolving into a moan as he pushed a finger inside me. The dual sensation of his mouth on my clit and his finger curling inside me was almost too much. I could feel the orgasm building, coiling tight in my belly.
"Not yet," he said, pulling back just as I neared the edge. "I want to be inside you when you come."
"Garrett, please," I begged, my voice breaking.
He climbed back up my body, kissing me deeply. I could taste myself on his tongue, musky and intimate. The evidence of my arousal on his lips was intoxicating, making me want him even more.
He positioned himself between my thighs. The head of his cock pressed against my entrance, teasing. I arched into him, desperate for more, but he held still.
"Not yet," he said, his voice strained. "I want to feel you first."
His hand moved between us, fingers circling my clit with expert precision. My hips bucked against his touch, a moan escaping my lips. He watched my face, studying every reaction, cataloging every sound.
"You like that?"
"Yes."
"Tell me what you want."
"I want you inside me." The words tumbled out, raw and honest. "I want to feel you."
He positioned himself again, and this time he pushed forward slowly. The stretch was exquisite, a fullness that made my eyes roll back. Inch by inch, he filled me, the sensation overwhelming. I could feel every ridge, every vein as he sank deeper. He paused when he was fully sheathed, giving me time to adjust.
"Look at me," he commanded.
I forced my eyes open. His face was inches from mine, jaw tight, pupils blown wide with desire.
"You're mine," he said. "Right now, in this moment, you're mine. Say it."
"I'm yours."
He began to move, a slow, deep rhythm that hit places I didn't know existed. Each thrust was deliberate, measured. He would pull almost completely out before sliding back in, the friction exquisite against my inner walls. He was in complete control, and I surrendered to it completely.
"You feel incredible," he growled, his pace increasing. "So tight around me. So perfect."
I wrapped my legs around his waist, pulling him deeper. His hand found mine, fingers interlacing, pinning my arm above my head. The gesture was possessive, intimate. He thrust harder, the angle changing, hitting something inside me that made me see stars.
"Right there," I gasped. "Don't stop."
He didn't. He maintained the angle, driving into me with purpose. The sounds of our bodies meeting filled the room, slick and obscene and perfect. I could feel another orgasm building, stronger than the first, threatening to overwhelm me.
"I've wanted this since I saw you in that driveway," he said, his breath hot against my ear. "Since you stepped out of your car with that camera around your neck."
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"Because you're my daughter's best friend. Because I'm supposed to be responsible." He laughed, a bitter sound. "Look how well that worked out."
His thrusts grew harder, faster. The bed creaked beneath us, a rhythmic counterpoint to our mingled breaths. I could feel the tension building, coiling low in my belly.
"I'm close," I gasped.
"Not yet." He slowed, pulling almost all the way out before pushing back in with agonizing slowness. "I want this to last."
"Please, Garrett."
"Please what?"
"Please let me come."
He smiled, a dark, satisfied expression. "That's better."
He began moving again, but this time his rhythm was different. Harder. Deeper. Each thrust drove the breath from my lungs. His hand slipped between us, fingers working my clit in tight circles that matched his pace. The dual sensation was overwhelming. I was drowning in it, in him.
"Come for me," he said. "Now."
The command broke something inside me. I shattered, waves of pleasure crashing through my body in relentless surges. I cried out his name, my back arching off the bed as the orgasm ripped through me. My inner walls clenched around him, pulsing, and I felt him lose his rhythm.
"Fuck, Chloe," he groaned, his voice ragged. "I can't..."
He buried himself deep inside me one final time, his body going rigid. I felt him come, the warmth of his release flooding me as he pulsed inside me. His groan was raw, primal, and I watched his face as he found his release, the pleasure etched into every line.
We lay there afterward, tangled together, breathing hard. His weight was a comfort, his warmth seeping into my cooling skin. I could feel his heart racing, matching my own. He was still inside me, softening, and neither of us made any move to change that.
He rolled off me, pulling me against his side. His arm wrapped around my waist, holding me close. For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
"We need to talk about this," he finally said, his voice quiet.
"I know."
"What happened at the pool, what just happened... it can't leave this room."
I turned to face him, searching his eyes. "You think I don't know that?"
"I'm serious, Chloe." His hand came up to cup my cheek, thumb tracing my cheekbone. "If Taylor finds out..."
"She won't." The words came out sharper than I intended. "I'm not stupid. I know what's at stake."
"Do you?" He held my gaze. "Because I don't think you fully understand. If this gets out, I lose my daughter. Everything I've built with her disappears."
"Then we make sure it doesn't get out."
He was quiet for a moment, studying my face. "Are you okay with that? With keeping this a secret?"
"Are you?"
"I asked you first."
I considered the question. Was I okay with it? The guilt was already there, gnawing at the edges of my consciousness. But so was the desire, the need. I had never felt anything like what I felt with him.
"I don't know if okay is the right word," I admitted. "But I know I'm not ready to stop."
His expression softened. "Neither am I."
He pulled me closer, kissing my forehead. I nestled into his chest, listening to his heartbeat. It was steady now, calm. I wished I could say the same about my own.
"We need ground rules," he said after a while.
"Ground rules?"
"To keep this safe. For both of us."
I propped myself up on one elbow, looking at him. "Like what?"
"No messages that could be traced. If you want to take pictures of me, we use your camera and keep the memory cards locked away."
"That's smart."
"And we never talk about this when anyone else might hear. Not anywhere. Not ever."
"I can do that."
"And if either of us wants to stop, we stop. No questions asked."
I nodded, though the thought of stopping made my chest tighten. "Agreed."
He smiled, a real smile this time. "Good."
I lay back down, my head finding its place on his shoulder. His hand traced lazy patterns on my back, sending shivers across my skin. The room was growing darker as the sun finished its descent.
"I should probably go back to my own bed," I said, without moving.
"Probably."
Neither of us made any effort to get up.
"Five more minutes," he said. "Then I'll walk you to your door."
I smiled against his skin. "Okay."
The minutes stretched, and I felt myself drifting. His warmth, his scent, the steady rhythm of his breathing. It was easy to pretend, in this moment, that things were simple. That we were just two people who had found each other.
But I knew the truth. There was nothing simple about this. We were playing with fire, and someone was bound to get burned.
I just hoped it wouldn't be me.
Or him.
Or Taylor.
Garrett's hand stilled on my back. "Chloe?"
"Mm?"
"I don't regret this." His voice was barely above a whisper. "Whatever happens from here, I need you to know that."
I lifted my head to look at him. In the dim light, his eyes were unreadable, but his expression was open, vulnerable.
"Neither do I," I said.
And I meant it.
He kissed me then, soft and sweet. A promise, maybe. Or a goodbye to the version of ourselves that existed before this moment. When he pulled back, his eyes were bright.
"I should let you get some sleep."
"Yeah." I sat up, the sheet pooling around my waist. "I guess you should."
He sat up too, his hand finding mine in the darkness. "Tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow."
"I have to work on the Mitchells' deck in the morning. But I'll be back by the afternoon."
"I'll be here."
He smiled, and it transformed his face. Made him look younger, lighter. I wanted to capture that expression, to freeze it in time.
"I'll walk you to your door," he said, rising from the bed.
He found my swimsuit on the floor and handed it to me. I pulled it on, feeling the damp fabric cling to my skin. He pulled on his shorts, and we stood there, two people in the aftermath of something neither of us fully understood.
He took my hand, leading me through the dark house to the front door. The street was quiet, the only light coming from the porch lamps of neighboring houses.
"Goodnight, Chloe."
"Goodnight, Garrett."
He kissed me once more, quick and fierce, before stepping back. I crossed the lawn to Taylor's house, my bare feet cold on the grass. At the door, I turned back. He was still standing on his porch, watching me.
I raised my hand in a small wave. He returned it.
Then I slipped inside, closing the door behind me. I leaned against it, my heart pounding. The house was dark, silent. I was alone.
But I didn't feel alone. I felt him everywhere. On my skin, in the ache between my legs that reminded me of every thrust.
I walked to my room, my body still humming with the memory of his touch. I lay down in the guest bed, the sheets cool against my heated skin. The pillow still smelled like him.
I closed my eyes, and I let myself remember. Every touch. Every whispered command.
I was in over my head. I knew that.
But for the first time in my life, I didn't want to swim back to shore.
Candid Risks
The morning sun streamed through the kitchen windows as Chloe poured herself a second cup of coffee. Her body still ached from the night before, a pleasant soreness that reminded her of Garrett's touch and the way he'd whispered her name when he claimed her in the guest room.
She caught her reflection in the window and barely recognized the woman staring back. There was a new confidence in her posture, a knowing glint in her green eyes that hadn't been there two weeks ago. Her lips curved into a slow smile as she replayed the memory of his hands gripping her hips, his breath hot against her neck as he told her exactly how much he wanted her.
The back door creaked open, and Chloe's pulse quickened. Garrett stepped inside, still wearing his work boots and a tight gray t-shirt that stretched across his broad shoulders. He'd been out checking the fence line, a chore he'd mentioned at breakfast, but the way his eyes found hers immediately told her he'd been thinking about the same things she had.
"Morning," she said, her voice softer than she intended.
"Morning, beautiful." He crossed the kitchen and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her against his chest. His lips found her neck, and she tilted her head to give him better access. "I've been thinking."
"About what?"
He pulled back, his blue eyes dark with intention. "I want you to photograph me today. But this time, I'm directing."
Chloe's breath caught. The shift in his tone, the possessive edge in his words, sent a thrill through her. "What did you have in mind?"
"Something risky." He gestured toward the living room where the curtains were still open. "I want the windows open. I want to feel the breeze. I want to know someone could see us."
Her heart hammered against her ribs. "Garrett, someone might actually see us."
"That's the point." His hands slid down to her hips, pulling her closer. "I want to watch you get turned on knowing we might get caught. I want to see how brave you really are."
The challenge in his voice ignited something primal in her. She'd spent so long being careful, being the good friend who followed all the rules. But here with him, she wanted to be reckless. She wanted to prove she could match his daring.
"Okay," she whispered. "Let me get my camera."
She retrieved her Nikon from the guest room, her fingers trembling slightly as she adjusted the settings. When she returned to the living room, Garrett had already positioned himself near the large picture window. The morning light poured in, casting long shadows across the hardwood floor.
"Stand there," he said, pointing to a spot near the couch. "I want to see how you look in this light."
Chloe obeyed, her bare feet cold against the floor. She wore only a thin cotton sundress, and she felt exposed under his gaze. But instead of discomfort, she felt powerful. Desired.
"Lift your dress," Garrett commanded, his voice dropping to a gravelly murmur. "Just to your thighs."
She complied, her fingers gripping the hem of the dress as she pulled it up. The cool air kissed her skin, and she watched his eyes trace the line of her legs.
"Higher," he said.
She pulled the dress up to her waist, revealing the lace of her panties. Her breathing quickened as she watched him approach, his footsteps heavy on the floor.
"Now take my picture," he said, stopping inches from her. "Capture this moment. The moment before I take what I want."
Chloe raised the camera, her viewfinder framing his face. The morning light caught the silver in his hair, the lines around his eyes. He was beautiful in a way that made her chest ache. She pressed the shutter, the click echoing in the quiet room.
"Again," he said, stepping closer. "Closer this time."
She adjusted the lens, capturing the stubble on his jaw, the intensity in his gaze. Another click.
"Now touch me," he said, barely above a whisper. "Keep the camera up, but touch me."
Her hand trembled as she reached out, her fingers brushing against his chest. His heart pounded beneath her palm, a steady rhythm that matched her own. She kept the camera pressed to her eye, capturing how his muscles tensed under her touch.
"Good girl," he murmured. "Now kneel."
She lowered herself to her knees, the hardwood pressing against her shins. The camera still in her hands, she looked up at him through the viewfinder. He towered over her, his hands fisting at his sides.
"Take my picture while I watch you," he said. "While I imagine all the things I'm going to do to you."
Chloe's fingers worked the camera, capturing the bulge in his jeans, the rise and fall of his chest with each breath. The risk of someone seeing them through the open window made every click of the shutter feel dangerous, forbidden.
"Stand up," he said, his tone rough. "I want to see you."
She rose, her legs unsteady. He reached for her, his hands finding the hem of her dress and pulling it over her head in one fluid motion. She stood before him in only her panties, the camera still clutched in her hands.
"Now photograph me while I touch you," he said.
He stepped behind her, his chest pressed against her back. His hands slid down her arms, guiding the camera up until it pointed at the window. Through the viewfinder, she could see the reflection of the two of them, his body curving around hers.
"Click," he whispered against her ear.
She pressed the shutter.
His hands moved to her breasts, cupping them through the thin lace of her bra. She gasped, the camera shaking in her hands.
"Keep shooting," he commanded. "Don't stop."
She clicked again, capturing his fingers digging into her skin, her nipples peaking under his touch. The camera became an extension of her, a way to document every moment of his possession.
His mouth found her neck, his teeth grazing her skin. She moaned, the sound loud in the quiet room.
"Quiet," he warned. "The neighbors might hear."
The thought sent a thrill through her. She bit her lip, stifling the sounds as his hands roamed her body. He unhooked her bra, letting it fall to the floor. The cool air hit her nipples, and she arched into his touch.
"Now turn around," he said. "I want to see your face when I take you."
She turned, her eyes meeting his. He took the camera from her hands and set it on the coffee table. Then he lifted her, her legs wrapping around his waist as he carried her to the kitchen.
"Garrett, the windows," she gasped.
"I know." He set her on the counter, her bare skin pressing against the cold granite. "I want the whole world to know you're mine."
He knelt before her, his hands sliding up her thighs. He hooked his fingers in the waistband of her panties and pulled them down, exposing her to the morning light.
"Look at you," he breathed. "So wet for me."
She watched him lower his head, his mouth finding her center. She cried out, her hands gripping the edge of the counter as his tongue worked her. The risk of someone seeing them through the open window made every sensation more intense, more dangerous.
His tongue traced slow circles around her clit, teasing her with the promise of more. She tangled her fingers in his hair, pulling him closer as waves of pleasure rippled through her. The cool granite beneath her contrasted with the heat building between her thighs, and she couldn't help but spread her legs wider, giving him better access.
"You taste incredible," he murmured against her, the vibration of his voice sending shivers up her spine. His tongue dipped lower, pushing inside her before sliding back up to her clit. He sucked gently, and she bit down on her lip to keep from screaming.
"Please," she begged. "Garrett, please."
He pulled back, his chin glistening. "Please what?"
"Please fuck me."
A hungry smile crossed his face. He stood, unbuckling his belt with practiced ease. His jeans dropped to his ankles, and she saw how hard he was, how much he wanted her. He stepped closer, his hands holding her hips.
"Look at me," he said. "I want to see your eyes when I'm inside you."
She met his gaze as he pushed into her, filling her completely. The stretch was exquisite, a perfect pressure that made her gasp. He held still for a moment, letting her adjust, letting the sensation wash over her.
He began to move, slow at first, pulling almost completely out before sliding back in. Each thrust drew a whimper from her lips. She wrapped her legs tighter around his waist, pulling him deeper.
"Take my picture," he said, his voice strained. "I want to see what this looks like."
She reached for the camera on the coffee table, her fingers fumbling with the settings. She raised it, capturing how he looked above her, his jaw tight, his eyes dark with lust. She clicked, the sound mixing with her ragged breaths.
"Again," he said, beginning to move faster.
She clicked again, capturing his muscles flexing with each thrust. The camera shook in her hands as he drove into her, each stroke sending waves of pleasure through her body.
"Keep shooting," he commanded. "I want to see this forever."
She did as he said, documenting every angle, every moment of their connection. The risk of being caught, the open windows, the possibility of a neighbor walking by, it all added to the intensity.
His pace increased, his breathing ragged. "You feel so good," he groaned. "So tight around me."
She lowered the camera, needing to touch him. Her hands found his chest, feeling the sweat gather on his skin. She pulled him down to her, kissing him deeply, tasting herself on his tongue.
"Harder," she whispered against his lips. "I need you harder."
He obliged, gripping her hips tighter as he slammed into her. The counter rattled, and she didn't care about the noise anymore. All she could feel was him, inside her, around her, consuming her.
"I'm close," he warned. "I want to feel you come around me."
Chloe's body responded to his command, her muscles tightening as pleasure built. She reached between them, her fingers finding her clit, rubbing in tight circles as he continued to thrust. The dual sensation pushed her closer to the edge.
"That's it," he encouraged, watching her touch herself. "Come for me. Let go."
She raised the camera one last time, capturing the moment her orgasm crashed over her. The image showed her face contorted in pleasure, his body tense above her, the morning light bathing them both. She cried out, the sound muffled by her hand as she remembered the open windows.
Her inner walls clenched around him, pulling him deeper as the waves of her climax rippled through her. Garrett followed, his body shuddering as he spilled inside her. He leaned forward, his forehead pressing against hers as they both caught their breath.
"That was incredible," she whispered.
He kissed her, soft and tender. "You're incredible."
She set the camera down, her arms wrapping around his neck. "I can't believe we did that with the windows open."
"I can't believe you actually photographed it." He chuckled, pulling back to look at her. "Can I see?"
She picked up the camera, scrolling through the images. The shots were raw, intimate, beautiful. They captured the passion and risk of their connection.
"These are amazing," she said.
"Keep them," he said. "A reminder of how brave you are."
She smiled, leaning into his touch. But in the back of her mind, a small voice whispered about Taylor. About the lies. About the risk of everything falling apart.
She pushed the thought away, focusing instead on the warmth of Garrett's body against hers, the camera still in her hands, the evidence of their forbidden love captured in pixels.
They had been lucky today. But luck had a way of running out.
For now, though, she was his. And that was all that mattered.
Interrupted Messages
The afternoon light filtered through the living room blinds, casting golden stripes across the hardwood floor. Chloe had her camera raised, capturing Garrett as he leaned against the doorframe with that lazy confidence she had come to crave. His t-shirt stretched across his shoulders, and she could see the outline of his chest beneath the thin fabric.
"You're staring," he said, his voice low and amused.
"I'm composing," she shot back, lowering the camera. "There's a difference."
He crossed the room in three long strides, his calloused hand wrapping around her wrist. "Is that what we're calling it now?"
Her breath hitched as he pulled her closer, the camera pressing between them. "Garrett, I'm still working."
"Work later." His mouth found her neck, and she tilted her head, giving him access. "I've been watching you all morning. That little frown you get when you're focused. The way you bite your lip."
"You're distracting me." But her voice came out breathy, and she let the camera strap slip from her shoulder, setting it carefully on the coffee table.
His hands slid under her shirt, thumbs tracing circles on her hip bones. "That's the idea."
She melted into him, her fingers tangling in his salt-and-pepper hair. They stumbled backward toward the couch, and she felt the cushions give way beneath her as he lowered her down. His weight settled over her, solid and familiar now, and she arched up to meet him.
Her phone buzzed on the side table.
"Ignore it," Garrett murmured against her collarbone.
The buzzing stopped. Then started again. Persistent. Insistent.
Chloe's eyes flickered to the screen. Taylor's name glowed back at her.
"It's her," she whispered, her body tensing beneath him.
Garrett pulled back, his jaw tight. "Don't answer."
"I have to. She'll get suspicious if I don't." Chloe's heart hammered as she reached for the phone. "Just... stay quiet. Please."
He didn't move off her. Instead, he shifted his weight, his body still pressed against hers, his face hovering inches away. His eyes held a challenge, a dark thrill that made her stomach flip.
She swiped to answer, forcing her voice into something casual. "Hey, Tay. What's up?"
"Finally! I was starting to think you were ignoring me." Taylor's voice came through bright and clear, and Chloe could see her friend's face on the screen, her blonde hair pulled back in a messy bun. "What are you doing?"
"Nothing. Just... editing photos." The lie came easily, but her voice sounded thin.
Garrett's hand slid down her stomach, fingers dipping beneath the waistband of her shorts. Chloe's breath caught, and she pressed her lips together hard.
"You okay? You sound weird." Taylor's brow furrowed on the screen.
"Yeah, just tired. Long day." Chloe's words came out clipped. Garrett's fingers were moving now, slow and deliberate, finding the damp heat between her legs. She gripped the phone tighter, her knuckles white.
"Well, don't work too hard. Have you seen my dad around? I keep trying to call him, but he's not picking up."
Garrett's fingers stilled for just a second, and Chloe saw the flash of guilt cross his face before he resumed his rhythm. She had to answer. Had to keep her voice steady.
"He's been... working on the deck a lot. Probably left his phone in the truck."
"Ugh, typical. He's so bad about that." Taylor laughed, and the sound was so familiar, so trusting, that Chloe felt a sharp pang of guilt in her chest. "Anyway, I just wanted to check in. Make sure you're not going crazy alone in that big house."
"I'm fine. Really." Chloe's voice cracked slightly as Garrett's fingers pressed deeper, finding the spot that made her see stars. She bit the inside of her cheek, hard.
"Are you sure? You sound... out of breath."
"I was just... moving some furniture. Heavy stuff." The lie tasted bitter, but she couldn't stop now.
Garrett shifted, lowering his head to her neck, his mouth hot against her skin. He was going to make this impossible. She knew it. She wanted it.
"Okay, well, don't hurt yourself. I'll let you go. Love you, Chlo."
"Love you too, Tay."
She ended the call and dropped the phone onto the cushion beside her, her body trembling. "That was so close."
"She didn't suspect anything." Garrett's voice was rough, his lips trailing down her throat.
"You made it so hard to think."
"Good." He pulled her shorts down, his eyes dark with hunger. "Now where were we?"
But the phone lit up again. A text message.
Chloe glanced at the screen. "She's asking if I want her to send a care package from abroad."
"Tell her yes. Then put the phone away."
Chloe typed a quick reply, her fingers clumsy. Before she could set the phone down, another message came through. "She's asking about the garden. If the roses are blooming."
Garrett groaned, his forehead dropping to her shoulder. "She's not going to stop, is she?"
"I can't just ignore her. She'll know something's wrong." Chloe's mind raced, caught between the thrill of his hands on her and the guilt of the lies piling up. "Just... give me a minute."
She typed back a response about the roses. Another followed about the mail. A third about the neighbor's dog. Each message felt like a betrayal, but she couldn't stop. Taylor's curiosity was a flood, and Chloe was drowning in it.
Garrett's patience frayed. He took the phone from her hand, setting it face-down on the table. "Enough."
"Garrett, she'll—"
"She'll survive." His mouth claimed hers, silencing her protests. His hands found her hips, pulling her closer, and she felt the hard length of him pressing against her thigh.
The phone buzzed again. And again.
"Ignore it," he commanded, his voice a low growl.
But Chloe couldn't. The buzzing was a constant reminder of what they were doing, who they were betraying. It made her pulse pound. Her skin flushed hot. The danger made her desire burn brighter.
She reached for the phone, her hand shaking. "I'll just... tell her I'm going to bed."
Garrett watched her, his eyes hooded. He didn't stop her, but he didn't move away either. His hand found her breast, thumb circling her nipple through the fabric of her shirt.
Chloe typed the message with one hand, her breath coming in short gasps. "Going to bed. Talk tomorrow."
Taylor's reply came instantly. "Okay! Sleep well. Love you!"
Chloe set the phone down, her body humming with tension. "She's done. For now."
"Good." Garrett pulled her shirt over her head, his mouth finding her breast. "Because I'm not done with you."
His tongue traced a slow circle around her nipple, and she gasped, her back arching off the cushions. He took his time, alternating between gentle flicks and firm pressure, his other hand kneading the soft flesh of her other breast. She buried her fingers in his hair, pulling him closer, needing more.
"You like that," he murmured against her skin, his breath hot and damp.
"You know I do."
He kissed a trail down her ribs, across her stomach, his stubble scraping lightly against her sensitive skin. When he reached the waistband of her panties, he paused, looking up at her with those dark, hungry eyes. She lifted her hips, and he slid the fabric down her legs, tossing it aside.
He parted her thighs with his shoulders, and she felt his breath against her most sensitive flesh. The first stroke of his tongue made her cry out, and he pressed his hand over her mouth, his eyes warning her to be quiet. She nodded, biting down on his palm.
He worked her slowly, his tongue tracing deliberate patterns, finding every nerve ending that made her shake. She writhed beneath him, her hips lifting to meet his mouth, her moans muffled against his hand. The tension coiled tight in her belly, building toward something she couldn't contain.
Just before she fell over the edge, he pulled back. She whimpered at the loss, but he was already moving, shedding his clothes with efficient movements. She watched him, her chest heaving, her body aching for him.
He settled over her again, and she felt the hard length of him pressing against her entrance. He paused there, teasing, his eyes locked on hers. "Tell me what you want."
"You. I want you inside me."
He groaned and pushed forward, filling her in one slow thrust. She gasped, her nails digging into his shoulders. He held still for a moment, letting her adjust, his forehead pressed against hers.
"You feel so good," he breathed, his voice rough.
He began to move, slow and controlled, each thrust measured to avoid noise. His hand stayed over her mouth, a silent command to stay quiet. She was hyperaware of every sound: the creak of the couch springs, the soft rhythm of their bodies, her own muffled whimpers.
He shifted his angle, hitting deeper, and she saw stars behind her eyelids. His thumb found her clit, circling in time with his thrusts, and she bit down on his palm to keep from screaming.
"That's it," he whispered, his breath hot against her ear. "Come for me. Quietly."
The orgasm hit her in waves, silent and shattering. Her body arched against his, every muscle clenching around him. She felt him pulse inside her, his own release following moments later, his breath ragged against her neck, his grip tight on her hip.
They lay tangled together, breathing hard, the silence of the house pressing in around them. Chloe's phone lit up one last time. A goodnight message from Taylor.
She didn't look at it. She couldn't.
"This is getting dangerous," she whispered, her voice hollow.
Garrett's arm tightened around her. "I know."
"She's going to find out. She has to."
"Then we'll deal with it when she does."
Chloe turned to look at him, searching his face for doubt, for regret. She found none. Just that same fierce desire that mirrored her own.
"I don't want to stop," she admitted, the words tasting like confession.
"Then we don't." He kissed her forehead, a gesture so tender it made her chest ache. "We just get better at hiding."
She nodded, but the weight of the lies settled on her like a blanket, heavy and suffocating. She thought of Taylor's trusting smile, her easy laughter. She thought of the way Garrett looked at her, like she was the only thing in the world worth seeing.
She was trapped between them, and she didn't know how to escape.
But as Garrett pulled her closer, his body warm and solid against hers, she realized she didn't want to escape. Not yet. Not when the thrill of being caught was so intoxicating, so addictive.
Tomorrow, she would feel the guilt again. Tomorrow, she would lie again. But tonight, she would let herself fall.
And pray that when she hit the ground, it wouldn't destroy everything she cared about.
Exposed Hearts
The darkroom smelled of fixer and old secrets. I stood over the developing trays, watching a photograph slowly emerge from the blank paper. Garrett's face materialized in the chemical bath, caught in a moment of unguarded vulnerability from our first photoshoot. The silver stubble. The laugh lines. The slight smile that crinkled the corners of his mouth.
I hadn't been able to sleep. Taylor's video call earlier had left me restless, the lies sitting heavy in my chest. She'd asked about her dad, about the house, about everything except what I was actually doing with her father.
"Couldn't sleep either."
I spun around. Garrett stood in the doorway, silhouetted by the dim glow from the hallway. He wore only sweatpants, his chest bare, the silver hair across his pectorals catching the red wash of the safelight.
"Sorry," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "I didn't mean to wake you."
"You didn't." He stepped closer, the floorboards creaking beneath his weight. "I felt you leave the bed."
The admission hung between us. He'd noticed my absence. He'd woken up because I wasn't there.
"I was thinking," I said, turning back to the developing tray. "About all of this. About us."
"Good thoughts or bad?"
I watched the photograph darken, Garrett's eyes becoming clearer, more defined. "Both, I think."
He came to stand beside me, his shoulder brushing mine. The warmth of his skin seeped into my arm, and my body responded automatically, leaning into him.
"Tell me," he said.
I swallowed hard. "I think about Taylor. About what she'd say if she knew. About what kind of friend that makes me."
"Chloe..."
"And then I think about you." I finally looked at him, meeting those hazel eyes that had haunted me since the first day. "About how I can't stop. How I don't want to stop, even though I know I should."
His hand found mine, calloused fingers intertwining with my slender ones. "I know the feeling."
"Do you?" My voice cracked. "Do you lie awake at night wondering if you're a terrible person? If you're destroying your relationship with your daughter for something that can't last?"
Garrett was silent for a long moment. The photograph in the tray was fully developed now, his face staring up at us from the chemical bath.
"Yes," he said finally, his voice rough. "Every night. Every morning. Every time I look at you and feel this pull that I can't explain."
"Then why?" I turned to face him fully, my hand still in his. "Why are we doing this?"
"Because I can't stop." He stepped closer, his free hand coming up to cup my face. "Because you make me feel alive in a way I haven't felt in years. Because when I'm with you, I forget about the age gap and the guilt and everything else that should matter."
"That's not an answer," I whispered.
"It's the only one I have." His thumb traced my cheekbone. "I'm obsessed with you, Chloe. I think about you constantly. The way you move, the way you laugh, the way you look at me through that camera like you're seeing something no one else can."
Tears pricked at my eyes. "I am seeing something no one else can. I'm seeing you, Garrett. The real you."
"Then you're the only one."
He kissed me then, soft and slow, nothing like the urgent, desperate kisses of our previous encounters. This was a question, a confession, a plea all wrapped into one.
I melted into him, my hands sliding up his chest, feeling the steady thrum of his heartbeat beneath my palms. The darkroom felt smaller, more intimate, the chemical smell mixing with his scent of soap and something darker, muskier.
"I'm scared," I admitted against his lips.
"Of what?"
"Of losing you. Of this ending. Of waking up one day and realizing it was all a fantasy."
He pulled back, his eyes searching mine. "What if it's not a fantasy? What if it's real?"
"How can it be real?" The words tumbled out. "You're forty-nine. I'm twenty-two. You're Taylor's father. We're living in your house while she's gone, and every time she calls, I have to lie to her face."
"I know." His voice was pained. "I know all of that. But I also know that I've never felt this way about anyone. Not in my marriage, not in the years since. You're not just a fling to me, Chloe. You're not just a young woman I'm using to feel young again."
"What am I, then?"
He took a breath, his hands moving to my waist, pulling me closer. "You're the person who made me feel like I still had something to offer. You're the woman who looks at me like I'm worth seeing. You're the only thing that makes sense right now, even when nothing about this makes sense at all."
I kissed him again, harder this time, pouring all my confusion and desire and fear into the press of my lips against his. He responded in kind, his hands sliding down to grip my hips, pulling me against him.
The developing tray sat forgotten as he walked me backward until my spine hit the counter. He lifted me onto it, the cool surface a shock against my thighs through the thin fabric of my sleep shorts.
"I want to be with you," he said, his voice low and intense. "Not just for sex. I want to wake up next to you. I want to make you breakfast. I want to hear about your photography dreams."
"Garrett..."
"I know it's complicated. I know it's probably impossible. But I can't pretend anymore that this is just physical for me."
I reached up, tangling my fingers in his silver hair. "It's not just physical for me either."
"Then what do we do?"
"I don't know." I pulled him closer, wrapping my legs around his waist. "But I don't want to stop."
He kissed me again, deeper this time, his tongue sliding against mine. His hands found the hem of my tank top, pulling it up and over my head. The darkroom's red light cast everything in a warm, intimate glow, making his skin look golden, his eyes dark with want.
"I want to make love to you," he said, the words deliberate, weighted. "Not just fuck you. I want to take my time and show you what you mean to me."
My breath caught. "Okay."
He lifted me off the counter, carrying me to the old couch in the corner of the darkroom. It was worn, covered in dust from years of neglect, but right now it felt like the most romantic place in the world.
He laid me down, his body covering mine, and kissed me slowly, deliberately. His hands traced patterns on my skin, memorizing every curve, every dip. When he reached my shorts, he pulled them down with agonizing slowness, his lips following the path of fabric.
I shivered as his mouth found my inner thigh, pressing soft kisses against the sensitive skin. His breath was warm, his stubble rough, and I arched into him, craving more.
"Patience," he murmured against my skin. "I want to savor this."
He parted my legs, his fingers finding me wet and ready. He groaned, the sound vibrating through me. "You're so beautiful, Chloe. So perfect."
He lowered his head, and when his tongue touched me, I gasped. It was slow, teasing, nothing like the urgent oral in the pool. This was worship. This was devotion. He learned my body with his mouth, finding every spot that made me moan, lingering there until I was trembling.
"Garrett," I breathed, my fingers in his hair. "Please."
"Please what?"
"Please don't stop."
He didn't. He brought me to the edge with his tongue, then pulled back, leaving me teetering on the brink. I whimpered, a sound of pure frustration, and he laughed softly against my skin.
"Not yet," he said. "I want to feel you come around me."
He moved up my body, his cock pressing against my entrance, and looked into my eyes. "Look at me, Chloe. I want to see you."
I met his gaze as he pushed inside me, slow and steady, filling me completely. The intensity of it, the way he held my eyes, made it feel like more than just sex. It felt like a promise.
He moved with a rhythm that was tender and deep, each thrust sending waves of pleasure through me. His forehead pressed against mine, his breath mingling with my gasps.
"I love being inside you," he whispered. "I love the way you feel. I love the sounds you make."
"Garrett..."
"I love you, Chloe."
The words hung in the air, heavy and terrifying and beautiful. I felt tears slide down my cheeks, and he kissed them away.
"You don't have to say it back," he said. "I just needed you to know."
I pulled him closer, wrapping my arms around his neck, my legs around his waist. "I'm falling in love with you too," I whispered. "And it scares me to death."
He kissed me then, deep and passionate, and his hips found a new rhythm, faster, harder, building toward something inevitable. I met him thrust for thrust, my body singing with the intensity of it.
When I came, it was with a cry that I couldn't contain, my body arching against his. He followed moments later, his groan muffled against my neck, his release hot and deep.
We stayed like that, tangled together on the old couch, breathing hard. The darkroom was silent except for our ragged breaths.
"I meant it," he said finally, his voice rough. "Every word."
"I know." I traced patterns on his back, feeling the muscles shift beneath his skin. "I meant what I said too."
He pulled out slowly, carefully, and gathered me in his arms. We lay there, naked and vulnerable, the photographs of our first meeting still developing in the trays nearby.
"I don't know what happens when Taylor comes back," I said.
"Neither do I." He kissed my forehead. "But I know I don't want this to end."
"Me neither."
We stayed in the darkroom until the safelight flickered, signaling the start of the automatic timer. Garrett carried me back to the guest room, laying me down on the bed and climbing in beside me.
He made love to me again as the sun started to rise, slower this time, gentler, a quiet affirmation of everything we'd confessed. And when we finally fell asleep, tangled in each other's arms, I felt something I hadn't felt in a long time.
Hope.
And terror.
But mostly hope.
Final Frame
The morning light filtered through the guest room curtains, casting pale gold stripes across the rumpled sheets. Chloe sat on the edge of the bed, her phone in her hand, Taylor's text message glowing on the screen. "Landing this afternoon. Can't wait to see you!!" She had read it half a dozen times already, each repetition driving the reality deeper into her chest. Today was the end. Or at least, the end of this. The end of waking up knowing Garrett was just next door. The end of stolen hours and secret touches. The end of pretending this was just a fling that would burn out on its own.
She hadn't burned out. She was still burning.
Her camera bag sat on the dresser, half packed. She had meant to put her equipment away last night, but she had been too distracted, too busy memorizing the feel of Garrett's hands on her skin during their last long night together. Now the bag gaped open, lenses and filters scattered across the surface like evidence of a crime she couldn't bring herself to clean up.
A soft knock on the front door made her pulse jump. She knew that knock. Three quick raps, then a pause, like he was giving her time to say no. She never said no.
Chloe padded barefoot through the living room, her sleep shorts riding high on her thighs, her tank top loose and thin. She pulled the door open and there he was, standing on the porch in his worn jeans and a fitted gray henley, his salt-and-pepper hair still damp from a shower. He looked at her with those dark eyes that had seen every inch of her, and something in his expression shifted, softened, saddened.
"Hey," he said, his voice low.
"Hey yourself." She stepped back, letting him in. "You're early."
"Couldn't stay away." He closed the door behind him and pulled her into his arms without hesitation, his mouth finding hers in a kiss that tasted like coffee and regret. She melted into him, her fingers curling into the fabric of his shirt, holding on like he might disappear if she let go.
When he finally broke the kiss, he rested his forehead against hers. "Taylor texted me too. Said she'll be home late this afternoon."
"I know." Chloe's voice came out smaller than she intended. "I've been counting the hours."
"Me too." He cupped her face in his calloused hands, his thumbs tracing her cheekbones. "But not the same way you're thinking. I've been counting how many I have left with you."
Her chest tightened. "Garrett..."
"I know this has to end. I know she's coming back and we have to go back to being neighbors and nothing else." His jaw clenched. "But I'm not ready. I don't think I'll ever be ready."
Chloe pulled back, looking up at him. The morning light caught the gray in his temples, the lines around his eyes that she had traced with her fingertips a hundred times. She had photographed him from every angle, in every light, in every state of vulnerability and strength. But she didn't have enough pictures. She would never have enough.
"I want to take more photos," she said, the words coming out before she could stop them. "Today. Right now. I want to capture you in a way I can keep."
His eyebrows lifted. "You already have hundreds."
"Not like this." She took his hand and led him toward the stairs. "Not in the place where you actually live. Not in your bed."
He followed without resistance, his boots heavy on the steps behind her. The master bedroom was at the end of the hall, the door half open. She had been in here before, of course, when Taylor had given her the tour of the house on the first day. But she had never been in here with him. Never lain on the king-sized bed where he slept every night, where he had probably lain awake thinking of her while his wife slept beside him.
The room was neat, masculine, with dark wood furniture and deep blue bedding. A pair of reading glasses sat on the nightstand next to a worn paperback. His space. His sanctuary. And she was about to make it theirs.
Chloe turned to face him, her hands going to the hem of her tank top. "I want you to undress me. Slowly. Like we have all the time in the world."
Garrett's breath caught. "Chloe, if I start undressing you, I'm not going to be able to stop."
"I don't want you to stop." She stepped closer, her fingers finding the buttons of his henley. "I want you to fuck me in your bed. I want to take pictures of you, every part of you. I want to remember this forever."
His hands covered hers, stilling her movements. "You're going to break my heart, you know that?"
"Only if you let me." She looked up at him, her green eyes fierce. "And I don't think you're going to let me go that easily."
He kissed her then, hard and desperate, his tongue sliding against hers as his hands found the hem of her tank top and pulled it over her head. She stood before him in nothing but her sleep shorts, her breasts bare, her nipples already peaked from the cool air and the heat of his gaze.
"Beautiful," he murmured against her mouth. "Every time, I think you can't get more beautiful, and then you do."
She unbuttoned his henley with trembling fingers, pushing it off his shoulders, revealing the broad chest she had photographed so many times. But this was different. This was his bedroom, his space, his life. She ran her palms over his pectorals, down his stomach, feeling the muscles twitch beneath her touch. The hair on his chest was darker than the silver at his temples, coarser than she expected, and she traced her fingers through it, watching the way his breath hitched when she found his nipple.
"Get the camera," he said, his voice rough. "I want you to have this. All of it."
Chloe retrieved her camera from the guest room, her heart pounding. When she returned, Garrett had stripped down to his boxer briefs, sitting on the edge of the bed with his legs spread, his arms braced behind him. He looked like a sculpture, all hard lines and shadows, the morning light painting silver across his skin.
She raised the camera, the viewfinder framing him perfectly. The shutter snapped, sharp in the quiet room. She moved closer, circling him, capturing the tension in his shoulders, the hunger in his eyes, the way his hands gripped the bedding like he was holding himself back.
"Lie back," she said, her voice softer now. "I want to see you stretched out."
He complied, settling against the pillows, his body long and lean against the blue sheets. She climbed onto the bed beside him, still shooting, capturing the way the light fell across his chest, the way his stomach rose and fell with each breath, the way his cock strained against the cotton of his boxer briefs.
She lowered the camera, meeting his gaze. "I'm going to remember this forever. Every line of you. Every shadow."
"Then come here," he said, reaching for her. "Let me give you something worth remembering."
She set the camera aside and crawled into his arms, her body fitting against his like it was made for him. He rolled her onto her back, his weight pressing her into the mattress, his mouth tracing a path down her throat. He lingered at the hollow where her pulse beat frantically, his tongue tasting the salt of her skin, his teeth grazing the sensitive tendon. Then lower, his lips dragging across her collarbone, pausing to nip at the ridge of bone before continuing down to the swell of her breast.
She gasped when his mouth finally closed around her nipple, his tongue flicking in tight circles, his teeth grazing just enough to send sparks through her veins. He sucked gently at first, then harder, pulling the peak into his mouth while his hand found her other breast, rolling the nipple between his thumb and forefinger, pinching just hard enough to make her whimper.
"Garrett..." She threaded her fingers through his hair, holding him there. "Don't stop. Please."
He didn't. He worshipped her body with his mouth, his hands, his words. He told her she was beautiful, that she was driving him insane, that he had never felt anything like this. She believed him. In this room, in this moment, she believed everything.
His mouth traveled lower, pressing kisses across her ribs, her stomach, the sharp jut of her hipbone. He hooked his fingers into the waistband of her shorts and drew them down her legs in one slow motion, the fabric sliding over her thighs, her calves, dropping to the floor. She lay before him in nothing but her skin, the cool air of the bedroom raising goosebumps across her arms and legs.
He settled between her thighs, his shoulders pushing her legs wider. His breath was hot against her center, and she felt herself clench in anticipation. He pressed a kiss to the inside of her thigh, then another, working his way closer with maddening patience. When his tongue finally slid through her folds, she cried out, her hips bucking against his face.
He held her down, his hands firm on her hips, his rhythm relentless. His tongue found her clit and circled it in slow, deliberate strokes, building the pressure inside her like a coil winding tighter and tighter. He slipped a finger inside her, then two, curling them upward to find the spot that made her see stars. She was writhing beneath him, her hands fisted in the sheets, her head thrown back against the pillows, unable to keep still.
"Oh god, right there," she gasped, her voice breaking. "Don't stop, don't stop."
He didn't. He sucked her clit into his mouth, flicking his tongue against it while his fingers worked inside her, and she came with a sob, her body arching off the bed, her inner walls clenching around his hand. The orgasm crashed through her in waves, each one more intense than the last, until she lay trembling and breathless beneath him.
He crawled up her body, his cock hard against her thigh, leaving a wet trail across her skin. "I need to be inside you," he said, his voice wrecked. "I need to feel you one more time."
"Yes," she breathed. "Please."
He reached for the nightstand, but she stopped him. "No condom. I want to feel all of you. I'm on the pill. I'm clean. I trust you."
His eyes darkened. "You sure?"
"I've never been more sure of anything."
He positioned himself at her entrance, his eyes locked on hers. "Tell me if you want me to stop."
"I don't want you to stop."
He pushed inside her slowly, inch by inch, letting her feel every moment of the invasion. She gasped at the fullness, the heat, the way he stretched her. He filled her completely, and when he was buried to the hilt, he paused, his forehead pressed to hers, both of them breathing hard.
"Look at me," he said. "I want to see your eyes when I make you come."
She obeyed, her gaze locked on his as he began to move. Long, deep strokes that reached places she didn't know she had. He fucked her slowly at first, building a rhythm that felt like a conversation, like a goodbye, like a promise. She could feel every ridge of him inside her, the heat of him, the pulse of his heartbeat buried deep in her core. She wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him deeper, and he groaned, his composure cracking.
"Chloe..." Her name was a prayer on his lips. "I don't want this to end."
"Then don't let it." She reached up, cupping his face. "Find me. After this. When things settle down. Don't let me go."
He didn't answer with words. He answered with his body, driving into her harder, faster, his rhythm growing desperate. She met him thrust for thrust, her nails raking down his back, her moans filling the room. The bed creaked beneath them, the headboard knocking against the wall, but neither of them cared. Let the neighbors hear. Let the world know. In this moment, they were the only two people who existed.
He shifted his angle, hitching her leg higher on his hip, and the new position let him slide even deeper. She cried out at the sensation, at the way he hit something inside her that made her whole body jerk. He did it again, and again, each thrust punctuated by the wet sound of their bodies meeting, the slap of skin on skin, the ragged gasps that neither of them could control.
"You feel so good," he groaned against her neck, his breath hot and uneven. "So fucking good. I've never felt anything like you."
"More," she begged, her fingers digging into his shoulders. "Give me more."
He did. He pulled almost all the way out, then slammed back into her, the force of it pushing her up the bed. She grabbed the headboard to brace herself, and he took the invitation, pounding into her with a ferocity that left her breathless. She could feel another orgasm building, the pressure coiling low in her belly, spreading outward like fire.
"I'm close," she gasped, her inner walls fluttering around him. "Garrett, I'm so close."
"Come for me," he growled, his hand sliding between their bodies to find her clit. He pressed two fingers against it, rubbing in tight circles, and she shattered. Her orgasm ripped through her like a wave, her body convulsing around him, her back arching off the bed. She screamed his name, her voice hoarse and raw, and she felt him follow a moment later. His hips stuttered, his rhythm breaking, and he buried himself deep as he spilled inside her, his groan muffled against her shoulder. She felt the pulse of him, the heat of his release flooding her, and it triggered another wave, smaller but no less intense.
They lay there, tangled together, both of them trembling, both of them trying to catch their breath. He was still inside her, softening slowly, and neither of them wanted to move. The room smelled like sex and sweat and something else, something that might have been love or might have been desperation.
After a long moment, he lifted his head, his eyes soft. "I meant what I said. I'm not letting you go."
"Good," she whispered. "Because I'm not letting you go either."
She reached for the camera, her arm stretching across the rumpled sheets. He watched her, a slow smile spreading across his face. "You're really going to take pictures now?"
"I told you. I want to remember everything." She raised the camera, capturing him still inside her, his body gleaming with sweat, his expression a mix of satisfaction and longing. The shutter snapped once, then again as she caught the way the light fell across his back, the way his hand rested on her hip, the way their bodies were still joined. A third frame captured the tenderness in his eyes, the vulnerability he rarely showed anyone.
He rolled off her, pulling her with him so she was draped across his chest. She kept shooting, capturing the lines of his face, the gray in his stubble, the way his chest rose and fell. She captured the way he looked at her, like she was something precious, something he was afraid to lose.
"Take one of us together," he said, reaching for the camera. "Set the timer."
She propped the camera on the nightstand, set the timer, and scrambled back into his arms. The countdown beeped, and she pressed her lips to his, her hand splayed across his chest. The shutter clicked, capturing them in a kiss that said everything words couldn't.
When the camera fell silent, they lay together, the afternoon light shifting across the bed. They talked about nothing and everything. About the first time she saw him, about the way he looked in the darkroom, about the pool and the kitchen and every stolen moment in between. They laughed. They cried a little. They held each other like they were the only anchors in a storm.
Later, Chloe's phone buzzed. Taylor's text: "Just landed! See you soon!!"
The spell broke.
Chloe sat up, her hair tangled, her skin flushed. "I have to go. I have to be at the house when she gets there."
Garrett nodded, his jaw tight. "I know."
She dressed quickly, her movements mechanical, her heart heavy. He pulled on his jeans and followed her downstairs. At the door, she turned to face him one last time.
"This isn't goodbye," she said, her voice firm. "This is just... a pause."
He pulled her into his arms, kissing her forehead, her cheek, her lips. "I'll find you. When the time is right, I'll find you."
"Promise?"
"I promise."
She slipped out the door, her camera bag slung over her shoulder, her body still humming with the memory of his touch. She didn't look back. She couldn't. If she looked back, she would run back inside and never leave.
In the guest house, she packed her things with trembling hands. She checked her reflection in the mirror, smoothing her hair, pinching her cheeks to bring back some color. She looked like herself. She looked like nothing had happened. But everything had happened, and the evidence was burned into her skin, her memory, her heart.
When Taylor's car pulled into the driveway, Chloe was waiting on the porch, a smile fixed on her face. Taylor bounded out of the car, her arms wide, her laughter bright. "Chloe! Oh my god, I missed you so much!"
Chloe hugged her best friend, burying her face in Taylor's shoulder. "I missed you too, Tay. More than you know."
And somewhere in her camera bag, nestled between the lenses and the memory cards, were the photos. The final frames. The proof that for one perfect, forbidden moment, she had been his. And he had been hers.
The story wasn't over. It was just waiting for the next chapter to begin.
