The New Neighbor
Sophia Shade knelt in the soft earth of her front garden, her gloved hands tugging at a stubborn weed that had taken root among the marigolds. The afternoon sun warmed her back through her simple cotton blouse, and the familiar rhythm of suburban life settled around her like a well-worn blanket. At thirty-four, she had grown accustomed to these quiet afternoons, the kind that filled the spaces between her husband’s long workdays and the occasional dinner with neighbors who never stayed long. Her shoulder-length brown hair was pulled back in a loose ponytail, and her modest jeans and blouse kept everything covered, just as she preferred.
A moving truck rumbled to a stop next door, its brakes hissing. Sophia glanced up, curious but not overly so. New neighbors were rare on this street, and she wondered idly who might be taking the old Miller place. She returned to her weeding, but the sound of a woman’s voice, low and smooth, drew her attention again.
“Careful with that box, it has the books I actually care about,” the voice said, laced with a hint of amusement. Sophia looked over to see a tall woman with long black hair directing the movers. She wore elegant dark clothing that hugged her toned frame, a deep green blouse tucked into tailored slacks. Her piercing green eyes caught the light as she turned, and for a moment they seemed to settle on Sophia.
Sophia felt a flush rise to her cheeks and quickly looked down at the soil. She had not meant to stare. When she peeked again, the woman was walking toward her, a small smile playing on her lips.
“Hello there,” the newcomer said, her voice velvety and unhurried. “I’m Karla Barn. It looks like we’re going to be neighbors.”
Sophia stood, brushing dirt from her knees, and offered a polite smile. “Sophia Shade. Welcome to the street. It’s nice to meet you.” Her words came out a little stiff, the way they always did with strangers, but Karla’s presence felt strangely easy to stand near.
Karla extended a hand, her grip firm but warm. “Sophia. Lovely garden you have. I’ve always admired people who can make things grow.” She glanced back at the moving truck, then returned her attention fully to Sophia. “I’m a hypnotherapist by trade. Just moved in to set up a private practice. The city was getting a bit loud for my tastes.”
“A hypnotherapist?” Sophia repeated, intrigued despite herself. She had read an article once about hypnosis for stress, but she had never met anyone who practiced it. “That sounds interesting. I hope the move goes smoothly for you.”
Karla tilted her head, studying Sophia with those green eyes. “You seem like someone who carries a lot quietly. If you ever have trouble sleeping, I offer a free introductory session to new neighbors. No pressure, of course. Just a way to get to know each other.”
Sophia blinked, caught off guard. Insomnia had been her quiet companion for months, the kind that left her staring at the ceiling while Shade slept soundly beside her. She hesitated, then nodded. “That’s kind of you. I do have a little trouble with sleep sometimes. Maybe I’ll take you up on that.”
“Wonderful,” Karla said, her smile deepening with quiet satisfaction. “Come by tomorrow afternoon if you like. My door will be open.”
The next day, Sophia found herself on Karla’s porch, her heart beating a touch faster than usual. She had told Shade she was going for a walk, and he had barely looked up from his laptop. Now, standing there in her modest blouse and skirt, she wondered if this was a mistake. But the door opened before she could second-guess herself further.
Karla greeted her in another elegant outfit, this one a dark blouse that accentuated her athletic build. “Sophia. I’m glad you came. Please, come inside.”
The living room had been transformed already, with soft lighting and a comfortable chair positioned near a low table. Karla gestured for Sophia to sit. “Let’s start simple. Tell me what keeps you awake.”
Sophia perched on the edge of the chair, hands folded in her lap. “It’s just stress, I think. Nothing serious. The house, the routine. I lie there and my mind won’t quiet.”
Karla nodded, settling into the chair across from her. “That’s common. Hypnosis can help with that. Would you like me to show you how it works? I have a pendant I use sometimes. It’s just a focus point, nothing more.”
Sophia hesitated, then gave a small nod. “All right. I suppose it can’t hurt to try.”
Karla reached into a drawer and produced a silver pendant on a delicate chain. It caught the light as she held it up, swaying gently. “Just watch the pendant, Sophia. Let your eyes follow it. Breathe in slowly, and out. There’s no need to do anything at all except watch and listen to my voice.”
Sophia’s gaze fixed on the pendant. It moved in a slow, steady arc, and Karla’s voice wrapped around her, low and rhythmic. “That’s it. Notice how your shoulders are already loosening. Your breathing is becoming easier. Every time the pendant swings, you feel a little more relaxed, a little more at ease.”
The words seemed to settle into Sophia’s mind like warm water. Her eyelids grew heavy, but she kept watching. The room around her softened at the edges.
“Deeper now,” Karla continued, her tone laced with that knowing amusement. “Let everything else fade. You’re safe here. Your mind is opening, accepting these feelings of calm. When I count down from five, you’ll sink even further, and it will feel wonderful.”
Sophia barely registered the numbers. Five. Four. Her thoughts drifted. Three. The pendant gleamed. Two. Her body felt heavy and light at once. One.
She slipped into a deep trance, the world narrowing to Karla’s voice and the gentle sway of silver. Time stretched, soft and endless. She heard suggestions about rest, about letting go of tension, about feeling more at ease in her own skin. They sank in without resistance, and a faint warmth spread through her chest.
When Karla’s voice guided her back, Sophia blinked slowly, the room coming into focus again. She felt strangely refreshed, as though she had slept for hours.
“How do you feel?” Karla asked, the pendant now resting in her palm.
Sophia smiled, a little dazed. “Better. Much better. I didn’t expect it to work so quickly.”
Karla’s eyes sparkled with quiet satisfaction. “That’s the beginning. Come back anytime. We can build on this.”
Sophia stood, smoothing her skirt, unaware of the subtle shift already taking root. “Thank you, Karla. I think I will.”
As she walked home, the afternoon light seemed a little brighter, and the idea of another session lingered pleasantly in her mind. Shade would be home soon, and life would continue as usual. But for the first time in a long while, Sophia felt a spark of something new, something she could not yet name.
