The Discovery

Meghan Mentez eased her car into the driveway just after two in the afternoon, the engine ticking as it cooled. She had cut her errands short after the salon appointment ran long, her shoulder-length brown hair still smelling faintly of the conditioning treatment. The house looked quiet from the outside, Derek's truck parked in its usual spot. She grabbed her purse and let herself in through the side door, expecting to find him in the den or maybe out back mowing.

Instead, his voice drifted from the kitchen, low and hushed. She paused in the hallway, one hand still on the door handle.

"Yeah, Tara, I know it's risky," Derek said, a soft laugh threading through the words. "But you can't keep sending those pictures when I'm at work. I'm trying to focus here."

Meghan's breath caught. Tara Miller, the neighbor two doors down. The fitness instructor with the long dark ponytail and those piercing green eyes that always lingered a second too long when she waved from her porch. Meghan stayed perfectly still, the soft carpet muffling any sound.

Derek's voice dropped even lower. "That last one... the sports bra? Christ. You know what that does to me."

Heat flooded Meghan's cheeks. She should step forward, announce herself, end the call with a bright hello. Instead she edged backward into the shadow of the coat closet, heart hammering against her ribs.

"I can't stop thinking about it either," Derek continued. "About you. About what it would be like if..." He trailed off, and Meghan heard the faint creak of a chair as he shifted. "Listen, I have to go. She's due back soon. Text me later, okay?"

The call ended. Silence stretched for a moment, then the soft tap of fingers on a screen. Meghan risked a glance around the corner. Derek sat at the kitchen island, phone in hand, a small smile playing at the corner of his mouth. His short dark hair was mussed from running his fingers through it, and his kind brown eyes were fixed on whatever he was typing.

She slipped into the hallway bathroom instead of the kitchen, closing the door without latching it. From there she could still hear the occasional chuckle, the low hum of approval as he read responses. Her hands trembled as she set her purse on the counter. Shock sat heavy in her chest, but something else stirred beneath it, something warm and insistent that made her thighs press together.

She waited until she heard his footsteps move toward the garage, probably to grab a beer from the fridge out there. Only then did she emerge. The phone lay on the island where he had left it, screen dark. Curiosity burned hotter than the shame. She tapped it awake. No passcode. Of course not. They had always trusted each other.

The messages with Tara filled the screen. Flirty. Explicit in places. A photo of Tara in tight yoga pants, the caption reading "Wish these were your hands instead." Derek's reply: "Fuck, Tara. You're killing me." Another exchange about a hypothetical meeting at her place while Meghan was at book club. Meghan's stomach twisted, but the pulse between her legs throbbed in time with it. She set the phone down exactly as she had found it and retreated to the living room, sinking onto the couch before her knees gave out.

The afternoon passed in a haze. Derek returned from the garage and greeted her with the usual kiss on the cheek, his hand lingering at her waist. "You're home early," he said, voice perfectly normal. "Everything okay?"

"Fine," she managed, forcing a smile. "Just tired."

They ate dinner at the table like always, small talk about his day at the office and her plans for the garden. But every time he looked at her, Meghan wondered if he was picturing Tara instead. The thought should have hurt more. Instead it sent a slow, liquid heat curling through her belly. She excused herself early, claiming a headache, and went upstairs.

By the time the bedroom light clicked off and Derek's breathing evened out beside her, Meghan's body felt like a live wire. She waited a full twenty minutes, listening to the steady rhythm of his sleep, before sliding carefully from the bed. The guest bathroom down the hall offered privacy. She locked the door behind her and leaned against the sink, staring at her reflection in the low light.

Her hand slipped beneath the hem of her nightgown almost without permission. She was already wet, slick and hot against her fingers. The memory of Derek's voice on the phone replayed in her mind, but this time she let the fantasy unfold. Tara on her knees. Derek's hands in that long dark hair. The sounds Tara would make. The way Derek's face would look when he came inside her, younger, tighter, bolder than his wife.

Meghan bit her lip to stay quiet. Her fingers circled her clit with quick, desperate strokes. She imagined watching from the closet, imagined the wet sounds of their bodies, imagined Derek telling Tara how much tighter she felt. The orgasm hit hard and sudden, her thighs shaking, a soft whimper escaping despite her best effort. She braced both hands on the counter afterward, breathing through the aftershocks, guilt and arousal tangled so tightly she could not separate them.

When she crept back to bed, Derek did not stir. Meghan lay awake for a long time, one hand resting on her still-sensitive mound, replaying every stolen word and wondering what she would do with the knowledge now burning inside her.
