The Offer at the Border
The howls began precisely as Thea Pemberton anticipated.
She had timed her walk to the border with care, tracking the sunset and the first stirrings of the moon. The Finch pack lands stretched before her, dense pine forest broken by the occasional clearing. On the other side of the invisible line, her own pack's territory lay abandoned. She had left it behind. Everything behind.
The howls rose again, deeper now. Mating season howls. The sound vibrated through her bones and settled low in her belly, a resonance she refused to acknowledge. Not yet. Not until she was across.
Thea lifted the white cloth she had tied to a stripped branch. A flag of truce. A flag of surrender. Three weeks she had spent planning this, negotiating with herself over every possible outcome. Death, perhaps. Rejection, certainly. Enslavement, if things went poorly. And the one she was betting on: acceptance.
She stepped over the border.
The moment her foot touched Finch soil, the howls changed. They sharpened, became questioning. They had scented her. Not as a threat, not yet. But as something foreign, something that did not belong on their land during the most volatile time of their year.
Thea kept walking.
The forest floor was soft with fallen needles. She wore simple clothes, a gray dress that hung to her knees, no shoes. She wanted to appear unarmed, vulnerable, exactly what a peace offering should look like. Her auburn hair hung loose around her shoulders, catching the last light of the dying sun. She knew how she looked. That too was deliberate.
The first wolf came out of the trees.
He was huge, dark furred, with eyes that caught the twilight and glowed amber. He did not attack. He circled, sniffing the air around her, and then sat back on his haunches and let out a single sharp bark.
More wolves emerged. A handful at first, then a dozen, then more than she could count in the deepening gloom. They formed a corridor, a living path leading deeper into the territory. Thea's heart hammered against her ribs, but she kept her face calm. This was expected. This was prepared for.
She walked the corridor of wolves.
Their eyes tracked her. Their noses flared, drawing in her scent. She had masked herself as best she could, using herbs she learned from the old women of her pack. Sage and rosemary, crushed and rubbed into her skin. It would not fool them forever. It only had to fool them long enough.
The trees opened into a clearing. A longhouse stood at the center, its wooden walls dark with age and smoke. Torches burned on either side of the entrance, casting flickering shadows across the gathered pack. They were all in human form now, faces hard with suspicion. Adults and elders, young ones peering around their parents' legs.
And at the center of them all stood Alpha Zachary Finch.
She had seen him before, from a distance, during the skirmishes that had defined the last three years of border war. He was taller than she remembered, broader through the shoulders, with dark hair that fell across a scarred brow. His amber eyes locked onto her the moment she entered the clearing, and she felt the weight of his attention like a physical force.
Thea stopped ten feet from him. She lowered the white flag and let it fall to the ground.
"Alpha Finch." Her voice came out steady. She had practiced that too. "I'm Thea Pemberton of the Grey Hollow pack. I come to you under truce, offering myself as a living peace offering to end the war between our packs."
A murmur ran through the gathered wolves. Zachary's expression did not change.
"Your Alpha sent you?" His voice was rough, scraped raw by years of command.
"No." Thea met his eyes. "My Alpha doesn't know I'm here. I came of my own will. I offer my body and any pups I may bear to your pack, in exchange for a permanent peace between our territories."
The murmur grew louder. Someone laughed, a sharp ugly sound. Zachary raised one hand and the noise stopped.
"You offer yourself," he said slowly, as if testing the words. "A single woman. For peace."
"I'm a true Thea."
The silence that followed was absolute. Thea felt the weight of it pressing down on her, the sudden intensity of every eye in the clearing fixed on her body. She had said the words she swore to herself she would say. Now she could only wait.
Zachary stepped closer. He moved like a predator, each step measured and deliberate. When he reached her, he stopped, close enough that she could smell him. Pine and smoke and something underneath that made her pulse quicken despite her control.
"A true Thea," he repeated. "We haven't had one in two generations. You expect me to believe that your pack would let you walk away?"
"I didn't ask their permission." Thea held her ground. "I'm here. You can scent me yourself if you doubt me."
His eyes narrowed. He leaned in, and she felt his breath on her throat as he inhaled. The touch of his nose against her skin sent a shiver through her, a response she couldn't fully suppress. He drew back, his expression unreadable.
"Your scent is masked."
"Of course it is." She allowed a hint of sharpness to enter her voice. "Mating season has begun. I'd be a fool to walk into a rival pack with my scent fully open."
A flicker of something crossed his face. Approval, perhaps. Or wariness. She couldn't tell.
"You'd offer yourself as a brood mare for my pack," he said. "For peace."
"I'd offer myself as an Thea for your pack. The pups will come if they come. The peace will be immediate." She paused, choosing her next words carefully. "I have no loyalty to Grey Hollow. They treated me as a resource to be hoarded, never used. I'd rather be a resource that ends a war than one that sits idle while men die."
Zachary studied her for a long moment. The howls from the forest had grown closer, more urgent. The mating season was pressing in on them, a biological clock that would not stop ticking.
"Come inside," he said finally. "We'll discuss your offer."
He turned and walked toward the longhouse. The gathered pack parted to let him through, and Thea followed, feeling their eyes on her back. She had crossed the border. She had made her offer. Now she had to survive the night.
The longhouse was warm, lit by a central fire pit that cast dancing shadows across the walls. Pack members filed in behind her, filling the space with their bodies and their watchful silence. Zachary took his place at the head of the room, settling onto a raised platform covered in furs.
Thea stopped at the edge of the fire's light. She did not sit. She waited.
"You claim to be a true Thea," Zachary said. "But you walk into my territory during mating season, masked and prepared, speaking of politics and peace. That isn't the behavior of an Thea in heat."
"I'm not in heat yet." Thea kept her voice level. "My cycle hasn't fully awakened. I came before it did, so we could speak before instinct took over."
"And when it does awaken?"
"Then you'll have a true Thea in your pack, at the height of mating season, after two generations without one." She let the implication hang in the air. "I suggest you prepare your unmated males."
A man stepped forward from the crowd. He was broad shouldered, with short black hair and a hard face that looked like it had never learned to smile. "This is a trick. She's a spy, sent to disrupt our season."
"Emmett." Zachary's voice carried a warning. "She came under truce."
"Truce means nothing when her scent starts driving our wolves mad." Emmett's eyes fixed on Thea with open hostility. "If she's truly an Thea, she'll trigger a frenzy. We'll lose control of our own pack."
"I'm counting on it." Thea said the words quietly, but they carried in the silence.
The room erupted. Voices rose in anger and fear, questions and accusations flying past her. Thea stood still, letting the storm wash over her. This was expected. This was what she had prepared for.
Zachary rose to his feet, and the noise died.
"You're counting on it," he repeated. "Explain."
Thea met his eyes. "Your pack has been fighting a border war for three years. You've lost men, resources, territory. My pack has lost the same. Neither side can win. Neither side will surrender. But a true Thea, in full season, will do what no treaty can. It'll unite your pack around a single purpose. Burn away old grudges and create new bonds. Make you strong enough that Grey Hollow will never dare attack again."
"And what do you get from this?"
"Safety." She let the word hang. "A place in a pack that values me. The knowledge that I ended a war without more bloodshed."
Zachary was silent for a long moment. The fire crackled between them, sending sparks spiraling toward the smoke hole in the roof.
"I accept your offer."
The words fell like stones into still water. Emmett made a sound of protest, but Zachary raised his hand and silenced him.
"You'll stay in my pack," Zachary continued. "Under my protection and my authority. When your heat comes, you'll submit to the rites of our pack. And if you bear pups, they'll be Finch pups, raised in Finch territory. In exchange, I'll call off all raids against Grey Hollow. I'll establish a permanent truce, to be renewed each year at the gathering of Alphas."
Thea felt something loosen in her chest. Relief, or fear, or both. She couldn't tell anymore.
"Thank you, Alpha."
"Don't thank me yet." Zachary's voice dropped, becoming something darker. "You've walked into a pack on the edge of frenzy. Your scent is masked now, but when it blooms, it'll trigger things you can't control. Are you prepared for that?"
Thea thought of the howls she heard at the border. The wolves who had formed a corridor for her, their eyes glowing in the dark. The heat she had suppressed for years, waiting for the right moment to release it.
"I'm prepared."
Zachary nodded slowly. "Then sit by the fire. Eat what we give you. Rest while you can. We begin the real negotiations now."
He gestured to a place near the fire, and Thea moved to sit. The pack watched her, their suspicion warring with curiosity. She felt their gazes like weights on her skin.
As she settled onto the furs, she felt it. A flicker, deep in her belly. The first stirring of something she had kept locked away for so long. Her scent, even masked, was beginning to press against the herbs she had used. It would not hold much longer.
She looked across the fire at Zachary. He was watching her, his amber eyes unreadable. But she saw the way his nostrils flared, the way his hands tightened on his knees.
He had scented something.
The night was young. The season was just beginning. And Thea Pemberton, true Thea of no pack, was exactly where she needed to be.
