The Raid

The moonlight painted the Caribbean coast in shades of silver and shadow as it filtered through the salt stained windows of the Driftwood Tavern. Waves whispered against the nearby docks, a constant lullaby beneath the raucous laughter inside. Clara Bellamy wiped down the scarred wooden counter with a damp rag, her callused hands moving in steady circles. At twenty two years old, she carried the marks of her life in every line of her slender body. Sun kissed skin spoke of days hanging laundry in the harsh island light. Chestnut hair was pulled back into a practical knot at the nape of her neck, though stray wisps clung to her damp forehead. Her hazel eyes held a quiet watchfulness as she scanned the room.

She was a sailor's daughter turned tavern worker after fever took her mother. Practical to her core, Clara kept her head down, poured the rum, dodged the groping hands, and saved every coin she could. Yet beneath her timid exterior lay a secret spark of adventure kindled by her father's tales of distant ports and wild seas. Tonight the tavern held its usual crowd of sailors and merchants, their voices loud with drink. The air hung thick with tobacco smoke, spilled ale, and the sharp tang of roasted fish from the kitchen.

Clara filled another tankard for old Tom in the corner. He grinned at her with yellowed teeth. "You're a good lass, Clara. Steady as they come."

She offered a small smile in return. "Steady keeps the roof over my head, Tom. Now drink slow. You've had enough to float a sloop already."

A distant crack split the night. At first Clara mistook it for thunder, but then came the shouts. Heavy boots pounded outside. The tavern door burst inward with violent force, slamming against the wall hard enough to crack the frame. Armed men flooded through the opening, pistols raised and cutlasses glinting in the lantern light. Their faces were hardened by sun and violence, clothes a mismatch of stolen finery and roughspun.

"On the floor, all of you," roared the first man through the door. "This is a raid by the crew of the Revenge. Move and you die."

Panic erupted like gunpowder. Tables overturned. A merchant lunged for his dagger and received a pistol ball for his trouble. Women screamed. Men cursed and scrambled for cover. Clara dropped behind the bar, heart slamming against her ribs like a loose cannon on a rolling deck. Her breath came short and fast. Pirates. Real ones. Not the ghosts of stories but flesh and blood men who killed without hesitation. She pressed her back to the rough wood and tried to make herself small.

From her hiding spot she heard them tearing through the tavern. Bottles smashed. Coins clinked into sacks. A woman begged for mercy and received only laughter. Clara's fingers closed around the neck of an empty rum bottle. It was a poor weapon but better than nothing. Her practical mind raced. If she stayed hidden perhaps they would overlook her. Take the valuables and leave.

That hope died when a bearded pirate with cruel eyes vaulted the bar. His gaze locked on her. A greasy smile split his face. "Well now. What have we here? A pretty little tavern mouse." His hand shot out and seized her upper arm, hauling her upright. His grip bit deep into her flesh. "Captain will want to see this one. She might fetch a decent ransom or serve another purpose."

Clara's fear ignited into something sharper. She thought of her father standing against storms at sea and swung the bottle with all her strength. It connected with the side of the pirate's skull. The impact jarred her arm but the man staggered, cursing. His hold loosened just enough. She wrenched free and backed against the shelves, chest heaving.

"Unhand me, you filthy bastard," she snarled, her working class accent thickening with anger. "Touch me again and I'll crack your skull proper next time."

The pirate's face twisted with rage. He raised his cutlass, moonlight from the window catching its edge. Clara stared at death and refused to look away. Her legs shook but her chin stayed high. If this was the end she would meet it with the same defiance that had kept her alive in the tavern all these years.

"Hold that blade, McGee." The voice cut through the chaos like a whip crack. It was a woman's voice, rich and commanding, laced with the blunt cadence of a sailor who feared nothing. Every pirate in the tavern seemed to pause at the sound. The bearded man lowered his weapon immediately, though his eyes still burned with fury.

Clara watched as the crew parted. A tall figure strode through their midst with the easy grace of someone born to command. Fiery red hair caught the moonlight and seemed to burn with its own inner fire. The woman stood at least five inches taller than Clara, her athletic build evident in the way her loose white shirt stretched across strong shoulders and the swell of her breasts. Breeches hugged powerful thighs, tucked into scuffed boots. A pistol rested in her wide belt beside a cutlass that had clearly seen use. Piercing green eyes locked onto Clara with an intensity that stole the breath from her lungs.

This was Anne Bonny. The Pirate Queen. The woman whose name made merchants check their cargoes twice and sent lesser captains running for safe harbor. She moved like a predator, all contained power and predatory grace. Clara could not look away. Something about the captain's sun weathered skin, the confident tilt of her jaw, and the way her green eyes seemed to strip away every defense left Clara's mouth dry.

Anne stopped mere feet away. Her gaze traveled slowly over Clara's form, taking in the modest curves of her breasts beneath the simple dress, the slender waist, the callused hands still gripping the bottle. A slow smile curved the captain's lips. It was not a gentle expression. It held amusement, appreciation, and a spark of something darker that made heat rise unbidden in Clara's cheeks.

"Well now," Anne drawled, her voice carrying that seductive command even in the midst of violence. "What have we here? A slip of a girl who dares strike one of my men. Most bitches would be on their knees begging for mercy by now. But not you." She stepped closer. The scent of salt, leather, and something warm and spicy drifted from her skin. "You've got fire in those hazel eyes, girl. It caught my attention right quick."

Clara's heart hammered so hard she feared it might burst. She was terrified, yes. But that secret adventurous part of her recognized power when she saw it. Anne Bonny radiated it like the sun. Still, Clara refused to cower. "My name is Clara Bellamy," she said, voice only trembling a little. "And I won't beg. Take your loot and go. Leave me be."

Anne's laugh was low and throaty, sending an unwelcome shiver racing down Clara's spine. The captain glanced at the lean dark haired man who had appeared at her side. Calico Jack Rackham watched the exchange with observant eyes and an easy smile that did not reach his calculating gaze.

"Hear that, Jack?" Anne said. "She gives orders like she owns the place. I like her."

Jack rubbed his chin. "She's got spirit, Captain. But we've got mouths to feed and a ship to provision. Ransom her with the others. Her father was a sailor. Someone might pay for her return."

Anne's green eyes never left Clara's face. She reached out and caught Clara's chin between strong fingers, tilting her head up. The touch was firm, possessive, and sent a jolt through Clara's body. Anne's skin was rough from years at sea yet the contact felt strangely electric. Clara could feel the captain's breath against her cheek, warm and steady.

"No ransom," Anne declared, voice dropping into a register that made Clara's stomach tighten. "This one stays with us. I'll not waste such defiance on some fat merchant's coin. She'll serve aboard the Revenge. As my cabin girl. My personal attendant."

The words landed like cannon shot. Clara's mind reeled. Personal attendant. The implication hung heavy between them. She had heard what happened to women captured by pirates. Yet Anne had spared her life when she could have ordered her throat cut without a second thought. The captain's fingers lingered on her chin a moment longer than necessary, thumb brushing once across Clara's lower lip in a gesture that felt both threatening and intimate.

"I won't do it," Clara whispered fiercely, though she did not pull away. "I'm no man's whore. Or woman's either. Kill me if you must but I won't serve you."

Anne's smile widened, revealing strong white teeth. Her green eyes darkened with clear interest. "Oh you'll serve, Clara Bellamy. And I suspect that secret adventurous heart of yours will learn to crave it. Defy me again and I'll put you over my knee right here in this tavern. But obey..." She leaned in until her lips nearly brushed Clara's ear. "Obey and you'll find pleasures you've never dreamed of."

Clara's face burned. The captain's words painted vivid images that confused her terror with an unfamiliar warmth low in her belly. She remained silent, trapped by that commanding gaze.

Anne released her chin and stepped back. "Jack, see the rest are secured for proper ransom. This one belongs to me. Take her to the ship. Gently, mind. Damage her and you'll answer to me."

Rough hands seized Clara again, but this time with more care. She was marched out of the tavern into the cool night air. Her bare feet stumbled over cobblestones as they headed for the docks. Behind her she heard Anne issuing orders in that same authoritative tone. The sound of it sent strange ripples through Clara's body despite her fear.

The Revenge waited at the end of the dock like a sleek predator. Her masts reached toward the moonlit sky. Sails furled tight against the yards. Cannon ports stood closed but menacing. The crew moved with practiced efficiency, loading crates of stolen goods and barrels of rum. Clara was half dragged, half carried up the gangplank. The deck rocked gently beneath her feet, alive with the motion of the sea.

They steered her toward the stern cabin. The door opened to reveal a surprisingly spacious room lit by a single lantern. Maps covered a heavy desk. Weapons hung neatly on one wall. A wide bunk dominated the far side, covered in clean linens that seemed at odds with the pirate life. The air smelled of wood polish, ink, and the faint wild spice that clung to Anne Bonny's skin.

Clara was pushed inside but not roughly. The pirates left her there, bolting the door from outside. She stood in the center of the cabin, arms wrapped around herself, trying to steady her breathing. Through the small window she could see the tavern lights growing smaller as the ship prepared to depart. Her old life was vanishing with every creak of the hull.

The lock clicked again. Anne stepped inside alone, filling the cabin with her commanding presence. She closed the door and regarded Clara with those piercing green eyes. The captain removed her pistol belt and hung it carefully, never taking her gaze from her new captive. In the lantern light her athletic body looked even more imposing. The loose shirt had slipped further open during the raid, revealing the smooth plane of her collarbone and the upper curves of her breasts. Strong arms flexed as she crossed them over her chest.

"You're trembling, girl," Anne observed, voice softer now but no less commanding. "That's natural. But I meant what I said. Your life is spared because I chose it. You'll not be passed around the crew. You'll be mine alone. My cabin girl. You'll learn to keep this space clean, to bring me my meals, to attend me in all things."

Clara lifted her chin, clinging to the last threads of defiance even as exhaustion pulled at her. "And if I refuse your... attendance?"

Anne moved closer until only a foot separated them. She towered over Clara's more delicate frame. One strong hand reached out to tuck a stray chestnut lock behind Clara's ear. The gesture was almost tender, yet the power behind it was unmistakable. "Then you'll learn the taste of the lash, though I'd rather not mark that pretty skin. I think you'll come to enjoy serving me, Clara. That fire in you calls to something in me. We'll see just how bright it burns."

Clara's breath caught. The captain's proximity made her acutely aware of every detail. The warmth radiating from Anne's sun weathered body. The way her red hair fell in wild waves over one shoulder. The confident set of her mouth that promised both danger and dark pleasure. Fear still coiled tight in Clara's chest, but beneath it stirred the first unwelcome flickers of forbidden curiosity.

Anne seemed to read something in her expression. She smiled again, that predatory curve of lips that made Clara's pulse race. "The ship sails with the tide. Rest while you can. Tomorrow your new life begins. And Clara?" She paused at the door, looking back with unmistakable possession burning in her green eyes. "Welcome aboard the Revenge. You're mine now."

The door closed. The lock slid home. Clara sank onto the edge of the bunk, the reality of her capture settling over her like a heavy sail. The ship groaned as it caught the wind. Waves slapped against the hull. She was adrift now, taken by the most infamous woman in the Caribbean. Anne Bonny had spared her life on a whim, drawn by a moment of defiance in a moonlit tavern raid.

Clara touched her chin where the captain's fingers had gripped her. The skin still tingled. She did not understand the strange heat that lingered in her blood, but she knew one thing with bone deep certainty. Nothing would ever be the same. The Pirate Queen's captive had been claimed, and the slow unraveling of her resistance had only just begun.
